Super casual katsu restaurant, good spot for a quick bite in FiDi! You order at the kiosk (there are other options along with katsu sets), and they bring the food out. Super casual seating. Good quick spot! Loved the Mac salad

Chicken Katsu Curry Rice (front), Takoyaki (left), and Chicken Katsu Don (rear). Complementary miso soup to right.

"Inexpensive Japanese in downtown San Francisco financial district" My son and I stopped here for dinner randomly on a Friday night just before 6pm. He just visited Japan a few months ago and had a hankering for some chicken katsu. It's a small, narrow establishment, not far from the See's Candy store, but well-lit. One orders on a set of tablets at the front of the restaurant and then sits down. I ordered the chicken katsu don, which has the chicken katsu above vegetables, rice, and egg. My son wanted the chicken katsu curry rice, and also was eager for the Takoyaki (which has octopus). There was a complementary water station in the back (which we didn't notice before ordering bottles). I was impressed the entrees were all under $20 before tax and tip-- great for downtown SF. We didn't anticipate complementary miso soup, but we got it, and it was tasty. The takooyaki arrived next-- maybe 6 pieces and quite good. When you pop it in your mouth and bite, you get a burst of milk-like flavor in you mouth. I frankly couldn't taste the octopus, but that's OK... it was still yummy. I really liked my chicken katsu don-- I wanted some veggies, and the cabbage underneath was good, as was the seasoning. The chicken itself was excellent. My son said it wasn't quite as good as in Japan but agreed it was still good. The portion size was big-- I wasn't quite able to finish all the rice in mine. Service was fine-- I don't remember them checking on us after we got food, but we really didn't need anything since we'd already paid, water was available, etc. The restaurant itself was clean, too. I did stop at the washroom upstairs, and it had nice wooden floors, a large plant, etc., and clean overall. Overall, a solid choice at an amazing price for the area, so I'm happy to give 5 stars.

Truthfully, I didn't know what I was in for in visiting Katsuya. Apparently I wasn't alone. Arriving for a work lunch during lunch hours, one thing we did know, as a group of 5, is that we immediately needed to grab a seat while we figured it out. From there, I definitely felt like I was in some sort of clue based, escape room style, "figure-it-out" gameshow. Once settled, my group struggled to find a menu apart from one on the wall above the order kiosk (which was difficult to view from our table). We also had a time deciphering that not one but two restaurants occupied the space, each with their own menu. Woohoo, clue unlocked! Apparently we missed out on complimentary miso, but after ordering, and a short wait, we were rewarded with sandwiches! Although these sandwiches were beautiful and fragrant, the vibe at the table was sheer surprise! These meals are huge, and in addition to your sandwich, they arrive with multiple sides. All things said and done, they offer an impressive meal at a competitive price. Just make sure to read the Yelp reviews first so you're in the know!

Coming here was really simple. There was no line. Food came out fast. They almost gave someone else my food. The server gave me the wrong order initially. I wish both kiosks served both businesses menus.

We enjoyed the Chicken Karaage, the Chicken Katsu bento, and a side of rice for lunch.

My hubs and I were visiting SF for a long weekend and after visiting the very popular Farmers Market at the Embarcadero on Saturday, we wanted a place away from the crowds to eat lunch and decompress. Katsuya in the Financial District was the perfect place for this. On weekdays, this place is probably packed, but on a Saturday, it was only half full. Music was playing but not too loud. It was cool inside. Ahhh, great place to take a load off. We ordered at the kiosk. There are two--one for Katsuya and one for another restaurant that makes Korean food. We ordered the chicken katsu bento, the karaage chicken, and a side of rice. One of the staff came and cleaned off our table before we sat down. We got some ice water from the free standing dispenser. Our food came pretty quickly. Everything was cooked just right. We especially liked how savory and crunchy the chicken karaage was. The only thing we didn't eat was the shredded cabbage that came with the bento. It looked innocent but it was mixed with a light horseradish dressing and was too spicy for us. I'm taking off one star because the stairs to the bathrooms upstairs were slippery and yet the banister was broken with a sign saying to not touch it. This was kinda challenging to navigate. But other than that, Katsuya was a great place for lunch, the staff were friendly and efficient, and we'd definitely come here again next time we're in the area.

Conveniently located in FiDi and sharing the space with another eatery, Katsuya is a solid option for lunch or dinner. On my last visit I ordered online for pickup on my way home from my class. I arrived a bit early so it wasn't ready yet, but np - since it was near the end of the day there were plenty of seats inside to wait. There were a few people dining in, but even more coming through for takeout and delivery - staff were bustling about too, which is usually a good sign. Prices seem to have gone up over the years (IIRC they used to be in a different location), but the portions are generous. My husband and I typically share a tonkatsu sando meal and it's still plenty for the both of us.

I came here with my friend after work on Monday. There was only one other table at this time since it was 5:30pm after work. This is a small restaurant where you just order on the self-serve kiosk, sit at a table, and the server would bring the food to you, so you don't really interact with any of the staff. The place seems fairly chill and casual. I would imagine it's much more hectic during the lunch hour. My friend and I were confused at first because the two kiosks had different menus before we realized that Katsuya and Seoul Bunsik share this place. I went with the Chicken Katsu from Katsuya, and my friend went with Seoul Bunsik for the Creamy Carbonara. We sat down at a table, and a server brought us soup. I think it was miso soup, and it was pretty good. Our food came out in 15 minutes. The chicken katsu was crispy and flavorful, not dry. The macaroni salad was savory and saucy. I felt like it was a pretty good portion size for one person, and I left feeling satisfied. The total was $19.89 for my meal, so I would say it's not too pricey given the portion size. Before my katsu plate arrived, I had already finished my soup. I completely forgot to get water to drink while eating the katsu plate, but I didn't feel thirsty, so I think that it's good how the meal itself wasn't dry at all. I think this place is great for a meal if you're catching up with someone after work. I'm not sure what it's like during lunch hour, but dine-in might be busy.

A small little restaurant sharing its space with another restaurant, your exposure to the staff will only be when they bring food out and clean up. You'll order and pay at a kiosk in the front, and self-service water and utensils. We ordered a chicken katsu, a pork katsu curry rice, and a chicken karaage. The chicken katsu itself was fine. The sides weren't that great, either. The macaroni salad was a bit too pickle-y, the dressing was a little off to us, and the miso soup was watered down. The pork katsu was fairly crispy, but a little dry. The curry was incredibly watered down. Would not recommend getting this at all, even if you need a curry fix. The chicken karaage was fine. Fairly crispy and juicy, and the accompanying spicy mayo was decent. It did not come with any lemon.

A great option in the fidi area for lunch, come here pretty frequently. Love the lunch plate options they have here. Good portions here and a nice variety of things on the lunch plate. The katsu is crispy and juicy and they offer a variety of soup/sides for the lunch plate. The katsu curry is also super crispy. Got this to go and it had sat for 40 mins before I got to eating it. Even sitting through and have steam build up the texture was still crispy and didn't sog up! Katsu sando is stuffeddd with cheese and meat, def on the heavier side but so tasty.

    Jennifer T.

I tried both their katsu pork sando bento box and katsu pork with rice bento box before. It's similar except the sando one comes with 4 sesame balls that has an orange type of sauce. I don't like that orange sauce or their salad dressing because it's spicy with a kick of wasabi. I usually omit the salad dressing and use the katsu sauce on the salad instead. This place used to be in the International Court. Glad to see them do well and moved to their own space.

This was fine is not forgettable. I'm over the non-interaction ordering system that used to be just at busy airports but has crept its way into so many restaurants. It just doesn't land for me, hard to explain. Especially as a group, it's a bit awkward to take turns with it, know what to order, etc. so I just defaulted to trying what the group ordered, a chicken curry katsu. The chicken was the highlight as it was flavorful, but the rest was OK. It was thick and under-flavored.. I found myself shaking some sort of unlabeled spicy powder all over every bite I took to spice it up, literally and figuratively. Probably a good spot if you're on your own and can grab a spot up at Salesforce Park on a nice day. For us, we squeezed into a table and the atmosphere is very much a "to-go" vibe. Wouldn't make it a point to return, but it wasn't bad.

    Sara B.

Wow, this was so delicious! Portions are huge. The katsu sando itself is massive, and if you go with a box it comes with all sorts of accompaniments like mac salad, bean balls and cole slaw. The chicken is super thin, crispy and flavorful. If you like katsu chicken then you really cannot go wrong. Grabbing seats, ordering at the kiosk and getting our food was all a pretty quick and seamless process. They have a big lunch crowd but people move in and out fast. This is a nice pick for lunch in the area if you want something fast, quality and filling.

Katsuya has always been the spot in the International Food Court for the longest time, and I wanted to try this location! Geared towards the work lunch crowd, it's fairly fast for getting your order and getting seated (or getting out, if you're doing to-go). There's a set of ordering kiosks and menu right by the entrance. Punch in your order and get seated. Plenty of seats if you're not there during the lunch rush, otherwise it can get packed. Service is fairly non-existent apart from when they bring you your food. For this meal, I went during dinner time (greeted by a mostly empty restaurant and lots of available seats). I got a Chicken Katsu Curry Rice and my friend got a Chicken Katsu Sando. Chicken Katsu Curry Rice is fantastic as always, with crispy hot chicken and a large amount of curry and rice to pair it with. Complimentary miso soup is included. Portions from Katsuya are generous and filling, though flavor/taste isn't as great as other places. Not a spot I would take someone out for dinner, but for dollar for your work lunch, Katsuya is a great spot and hasn't let me down when I'm in Financial District on business.

I got a seasonal special donburi (Gouka Kani Donburi) as they shared they were adding new items to their menu. The crab on top of the rice was SO good and perfectly seasoned to go with the dish. All of the fresh sashimi was very thick, salmon was clean tasting and buttery. I have never tried the sweet shrimp but it may be my new favorite thing. The teacup steamed egg was presented well but for the price nothing really that special. I suspect the price is high because of the caviar & ikura. It's not bad, but it takes a while, it's small and not anything that stood out like the agedashi tofu or the other items. The service was really good. They provided a small dessert for us because we were celebrating an event, that was a nice touch. Overall, id come back but maybe not for an omakase or just nigiri.

It's been a while…read more I actually came here for dinner a couple years ago after taking a long gap after the world changed in 2020. They stopped serving lunch, a rotational place for business lunches and when entertaining visiting friends. I noticed a sign a few weeks ago that they started serving lunch again (started in April, as told by our waiter). I was happy that this is now an option for these lunches again. In studying the menu, the selection hasn't changed much though it is pared down a bit with a few of my favorite appetizers gone (shishito peppers). My go-to in the past was the business set lunch, still available and what I ordered on two business lunches on consecutive Fridays. It comes with choices for a two-course meal, not counting the provide bowl of miso soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=oIkVbbqPY0HWG9y3YbriEA) and a bowl of rice. Here's what I had: a. Yellowtail sashimi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=rSCkN5J6l_tJ419JdnxrUg) with shallots and poached garlic ponzu - This is as I remember and a great start to this meal. b., 1st visit NY strip steak (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=4TTrlrBTj60xo_ejeBNg7A), medium rare, with sauteed Japanese mushrooms - I don't recall whether this was Wagyu or not prior to Covid but, with inflation since that time, it's still a pretty good deal at this price. It was hearty and the mushrooms were a good complement along with the bowl of rice. b., 2nd visit Black cod (4 oz) with mixed green salad - Sorry as the conversation was serious so I forgot to take a photo. I passed on this on my 1st meal but knew it would be my 2nd entree here. It was miso marinated with the meat being tender and flavorful. Again, great with rice. Do pay attention for bones (they are larger) as I got two on my piece. Shared dishes: a. Sweet corn with soy garlic butter (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=Fviru3AbJYA_41PQ8geaTg) - There are four to an order so one diner had an extra cob. The portions are perfect as a pre-meal or accompanying bite for our meals. We had this both lunches. b. Crispy brussel sprouts with mustard and bonito flakes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=yUjFMqXOxfF-UyYN6ltybw) - We had this on our 1st lunch and, again, a nice dish to mix with rice. c. Salmon tataki (4 pc) with brown butter ponzu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=I18uKPl-QG0wVQrUUWAglQ) - A lighter shared dish where the ponzu didn't overpower the salmon. On our first visit, there was one large table near the entrance occupied and scattering of tables with two diners. The following week, the dining room was about 2/3rd full and there were two waiters manning the dining room. Our waiters, two different ones for each lunch, were very professional and cordial. With the neighborhood offices filling up with workers onsite, the return of lunch service makes sense. Looking forward to dining here again.

My wife and I had our anniversary dinner at Roka Akor and overall we had a good experience, but,…read morefor us, it didn't quite feel like the fine dining experience you'd expect for the price point. The service was decent, but nothing special and felt distant. While they wished us happy anniversary, there was no complimentary dessert, glass wine, decoration, etc. Which is okay, some places do and some don't. We ordered a couple of appetizers, a carafe of sake, and a couple of entrees and there was some difficulty and confusion with the order in which the dishes came out, which wasn't a big deal, just as little out of sync with the meal. The appetizers were great, I had the edamame which were perfectly cooked and salted, and my wife loved her rolls and sushi. My steak was beautiful, the presentation was immaculate, and the garnishes were delicious and overall tasted good, but there was something about the combination or maybe the chimichirri sauce that didn't quite hit as there was no high note, just a good baseline steak. I also ordered the sweet corn and that was simply amazing, the flavors were outstanding and utterly delicious. Overall a good dinner, but it didn't really feel like a $300 experience. I probably wouldn't return at that value.

Bon, Nene is a cute small Japanese spot with excellent food at a fair price for the quality. We got…read morethe Gyudon over udon noodles, curry with chicken katsu, and shared the Hokkaido cheesecake. The gyudon was excellent with a lightly sweet and savory flavor, I'd definitely get this again! The Hokkaido cheesecake was light and had what seemed like whipped cream in it which isn't my preference for cheesecake so I would skip this item next time. You put your name and number of people in your party at the list on the door, but the wait goes bye fairly quick. They have indoor and some outdoor seating. We loved their entree items and would definitely come back here!

We ordered a few dishes to share: Mushroom gyoza ($12) - came with 6 potstickers and a dipping sauce. Nothing super special. Hijiki salad ($13) - light and filled with seaweed, as expected. Got a few bites of the tofu puffs, but not much fish cake. Mentaiko spaghetti ($19) - not super creamy and with good flavor. Usually with these types of dishes, I'm concerned that it's too buttery or fishy, but this was spot on! Gyudon ($19) - egg looked like it was cooked beautifully. Katsu curry ($22) - good presentation, seemed to have quite a bit of rice. I didn't try the last two dishes, but I was told they were good. Nothing crazy special though. Personally, I think the noodle dish was the best. We also tried their Hokkaido cheesecake, and that was probably the only disappointing item. It wasn't as light and creamy as the ones I've had in Japan (LeTao will always be the gold standard in my heart). I ate a couple of bites and decided it just wasn't worth the calories. Service was friendly and I appreciate that there's outdoor dining. I saw a few furry friends, but if I didn't have pets, I would likely prefer to sit indoors. Seats seem more comfortable inside.

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. The pacing of the meal allows you to appreciate each course without feeling rushed, and the team's attention to detail creates a rhythm that keeps the meal engaging from start to finish. Kusakabe feels like a place made for special occasions, celebrations, or anyone looking for a more elevated Japanese dining experience. It combines technique, hospitality, and creativity in a way that makes the entire meal feel like an event rather than just a dinner. The balance of traditional and modern elements, along with the warmth of the service, leaves you with the sense of having experienced something complete and thoughtfully composed.

Immediately, the ambiance and service was quite nice. We were seated at the table, but typically I enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the chefs make our food. The service was amazing and they were very attentive. They also offered to take photos and gave us a little gift of hojicha tea since we were celebrating. We got the omakase, which was massive and had 18 courses. They gave us a menu so we knew what to expect for each course, and we ordered some sake. The omakase was delicious and more traditional than other places, each course was so beautiful and delicately made. This is definitely a lot of food, I would recommend the petite omakase in the future as I was stuffed, but it was a great experience if you come hungry! Courses: - Chawan-mushi - super tasty and every bite was delicious and umami forward! - Otsumami - 7 seasonal appetizers presented in a beautiful box, there was a stuffed crab claw in there that was delicious - 4 kinds of sushi - each piece came out one at a time, the first piece was my absolute favorite and blew me away, it was a seared chutoro that immediately melts in your mouth and tastes smokey - Hamachi soup - very tasty and warming soup with hamachi inside, was perfect in between the sushi course - 4 kinds of sushi - A5 Waguyu shabu - this course was extra $10 pp but was so delicious, the wagyu was melt in your mouth and had some grated daikon on top in a ponzu dashi, the toppings help balance the meat so it's overwhelming since it does melt in your mouth, one of my favorite bites! - 4 kind of sushi - they brought out some really great sushis, including more chutoro and an unagi handroll, but I was so stuffed at this point that I felt I couldn't enjoy it as much - miso soup - this soup was so tasty and kind of revived me after all that food, it felt comforting and a great way to end - dessert- I got the hojicha ice cream in a waffle like cookie and it was delicious!
