It cost $8 ($9.01 total, including tax and a 4% customer service fee, which I assume is either a credit card fee or the health mandate fee?) I love the grab and go concept of this neighborhood spot that's close to lots of offices in FiDi. I stopped in and got a chicken karaage bowl. It was very salty and shouldn't be advertised as karaage because the meat wasn't crisp, and had sauce on it. It was alright. I probably wouldn't get this again, but for the price it worked well. I wish there was a sign that said seasonal and it was clearer to tell what is being served to order vs grab and go. Clean and well organized shop food selection, container to place your food, and sauces/utensils. Special Roll: 4/5 The fish on top was good, the tempura shrimp inside was a little lacking in certain spots of the roll. Served with mango on the side great for the price. I don't even know where to begin, Jenny's team wakes up before the crack of dawn to prepare prodigious amounts of rice, sautéd cabbage, prepping endless cuts of protein and diligently preparing all the cooked goods into simple packaging. The food itself is just amazing. Hands down, best grab n go in downtown Fidi. Extremely affordable. I...couldn't really believe it, the prices haven't changed. I know cuz..I ate here 100+ times. The quantity is slightly down on the protein side, I get it, inflation is insane yet Jenny holds the line. Personal favorites include the savory gyudon, bright sashimi salad, and for a snack - why not a spam musubi for later? The beef bowl has good flavor and with the rice is quite Asian comfort food. You can get the salad with the sesame vinaigrette on it's own but go with the sashimi upgrade. Mealpal options here included a teriyaki salmon bowl but perhaps a little too skinny a slice. I love Gyudon. I search high and low for good Gyudon for lunch. When i think Japanese food I don't think sushi - I think Japanese Curry, Sukiyaki, Saba Shioyaki and Gyudon. Tenmatsu has great Gyudon! Paper thin, perfectly cooked sukiyaki beef with great sauce and onions. Great great great Japanese Curry! The perfect curry sauce and pieces of beef you can cut with a spoon. The bento boxes are HUGE. The place is probably 6x6 (maybe 9x9) it's tiny but don't let the small size fool you the food here is legit and very reasonable - Gydon $9 Japanese Beef Curry $9. Tenmatsu get's crowded and finding the food in a crowd in a tiny space can be challenging. The prices are fair for the financial district area. You have your basic rolls like the California roll for $7. Then, you have your specialty rolls like dragon, rainbow, and etc. for $10-$15. They also offer chirashi bowls, a whole section for hot donburi bowls, a hand roll section, "sides" including seaweed salad, and even a made to order noodle section (sobas and udon). I got the veggie combo $10.50 which was a good amount of food on its own. I also got the ebi hand roll for $2.50. Both were good and hit the spot but neither was extraordinarily unique. Sometimes you're in a rush and just want to grab something pre-made to go. Sure, there are tons of places hawking salads and sandwiches, but that gets boring quickly. This place reminds me of the convenience stores in Tokyo, with really tasty quick lunch options. Spam Musubi: I have mixed feelings about this. One hand, I thought the rice was really innovative since they seemed to mix scallions and spam bits to jazz it up. On the other hand, the spam on top was a bit lackluster since it wasn't glazed and/or crispy, just out of the can. Pork Belly Bento: I really really really liked this bento box. The pork belly was way better than you'd expect at a grab-and-go bento joint. The meat was firm yet tender while the fat on top was silky smooth; all encased in an inviting glaze. The cabbage underneath was a great pairing. Loved the little sausages as a side dish, since pork with pork always works. And the red colored fried tofu squares were an extra bonus protein. I had the tofu bowl and a side of green beans and unfortunately it wasn't all that good. I got the Kinoko Gohan with Chicken from meal pal which I put as a time of 2:15-2:30 but when I got there at around 2:15, the place had already started cleaning up and didn't have anymore of what I had reserved. So that's how I ended up with the tofu and green beans. The tofu was disappointing. It tasted like hot and sour soup mixed with tofu, which while could be good in some instances, didn't taste too good because there was so much rice and cabbage on the bottom. In all the bowl contained too much veggies and plain rice and not enough sauce or tofu. The green beans though were not too bad, they were rather tasty and had a nice dash of peanuts on top combined with a nice sauce. Overall, I would probably pass on choosing this place in the future, though it is possible that their meat items taste a lot better. Sometimes I need a touch of the motherland to get me through a long work day, or at least that's what I try to convince myself to justify the carb overload that I know can't be good for me from a donburi bowl. What happens is I think about that scene in Ozu's "Tokyo Story" where poor widowed Noriko is sitting in her tenement studio, and since she doesn't have a real kitchen, she has to order donburi bowls that get delivered to her by messenger to entertain her aged in-laws. That scene actually predates Grubhub and Seamless by over sixty years. Anyway, a hearty donburi bowl to someone like me who was raised by a transplanted Japanese mother is just like a plate of biscuits and gravy to Jamie W. Comfort food that stays in your subconscious and eventually needs to be fed to your belly. I worked in the area for about 4 years now and honestly had never noticed this place until I got on Mealpal and this was one of the options. Selected the salmon rice bowl for lunch and came at 12:30 to pick up. I got to the counter and the chef had just walked out of the kitchen to put the bowls down so my bowl was piping hot. There was a piece of salmon with a bunch of cooked cabbage and a couple pieces of tofu skin on top of Japanese rice (my favorite). They have extra teriyaki sauce and tonkatsu sauce on a tray which I found super awesome and convenient especially since I love to slather my rice in teriyaki sauce. Taste wise, the salmon was slightly overcooked but honestly, I drenched it in so much teriyaki sauce it didn't really matter. The rice was a little stuck together, but not hard. Hot boxes include chicken or fish with rice, tempura, shu mai, tofu in different combinations. Cold boxes include sushi and sashimi in various combinations. It also has some Japanese curry over rice and donburi bowls. Over a period of time I've tried a bunch of both their hot and cold options. The hot bento boxes are loaded and difficult to finish in one sitting even for a hearty eater like myself. Taste-wise also they are on point. Sushi and sashimi has always been fresh. Sashimi is not the melt in your mouth variety but it's good enough for the price. Prices for most items are in the $13-$15 range which is very reasonable for the area and quality of food. I love getting this dish, the salmon is tasty and doesn't have the fishy smell or taste, the teriyaki sauce glistens on the fish and adds a light sweet taste, the veggies are steamed and seasoned well, the pickled daikon gives a nice crunch, and they give a decent amount of rice and food. Picked up lunch with coworkers after our morning meeting today-- verdict is that the fish is definitely fresh (yay!) and sashimi cuts are above average in size (another yay!), but is short of 4 stars in a couple ways: 1) doesn't taste strongly of the respective fish's flavor, and 2) is not buttery / doesn't dissolve in your mouth like super premium fish. All things considered, still a solid spot for lunch in FiDi. I got the sashimi and a spam musubi. Sashimi came with 2 slices each of: 1) salmon-- not bad, but not the buttery umami-ness that is other restaurants' salmon sashimi, 2) yellowtail-- not super fresh, but not bad either, slightly lemony, 3) tuna-- not bad, meat kind of lingers in your mouth and doesn't dissolve, 4) red snapper-- not too much taste on its own, doesn't dissolve. Spam musbi-- rice is slightly hard (pre-made, I guess), but combo of egg, green onion pieces, and bits of spam make this a nice, snackable treat.
