I've been coming to this place for literally YEARS, and my meal there today gave me, literally, the worst food and worst service I've ever experienced at Katz. I ordered the Broadway Breakfast with boiled potato (it came plain, with no butter or onion/chive condiment, as I was told it would be served BECAUSE THE GUYS WHO DO THE CHOPPING WEREN'T THERE YET?? allegedly), poached egg (overcooked and mostly hard), stale bagel, and fatty pastrami. Plus the virgin Holy Mary I ordered (& which I've also ordered for years) was watered down & came WITHOUT the olives & other veg accoutrements I've always gotten with it AND a desiccated piece of celery--they didn't even bother to cut off the dried up tip to disguise the fact that it was so old. All this for an increased price. Now, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't gripe about the price IF they'd managed to keep the quality the same. But no.... Then there was the service. Our food & beverages came late (with the problems noted above). The server didn't bother to check on us or refill our coffees till we flagged her down to ask her and then got real attentive when it came closer to the time to pay our bill. The manager or asst manager in charge (??) was asked to bring butter for the dry potato and ran all around the restaurant till we gestured to remind him of our request....and, by that time, the potato was both half cold & half eaten (and he sent a second server to deliver it at that). Late night and not much open. Katz is open 24/7. French dip was delicious. Monte cristo was eaten without a complaint. At first hubby said the raspberry jam was very spicy that he could not breath. Turned out he inhaled the powder sugar. After that it was yum yum yum!!! Onion rings were hot and crispy but not much to an order. Server was attentive. My biggest complaint was the restroom was upstairs. When you have bad knees you avoid the steps. Luckily they have and elevator but I felt guilty using it. I remember saving my money up and getting me a corned beef (trimmed fat), swiss cheese, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing (their own secret sauce:) ON an onion roll, yassss honaaaaay, not rye but onion roll!!! I so wanted that when went here but I didn't get it! For real, it was really good though, they even made me one on French bread and it was tasty, can't do rye :(! I love this place for the simple fact that they're open 24 hours. I came here after watching a basketball game and it needed some late night food, and I ordered the chicken Philly cheesesteak. The cheesesteak itself was just OK, I needed some ranch or something on it. The portions were very generous, especially the sandwiches, they were huge! This is our second time coming here. The first time, we were seated promptly but the service was slow and the food was mediocre. We decided to try it again because the ambiance is cute and it's open late. Tonight I put my name on the list and we're told it's a 10-15 minute wait. We wait in the lobby right by the hostess stand. They call us even though we're standing right there and I didn't have my phone out since I figured the host and hostess would just tell us in person rather than call. I check my phone and literally one minute had passed since they called. I went to the hostess stand and they told me I didn't answer and gave the table to someone else. For some reason, I had never tried Katz's for late dining before - not that I do late dining/breakfast that much anymore these days. It was fun to give it a try. Plus: Great location, plentiful parking, nice environment (I'm not a huge fan of the IHOP look and feel) and very pleasant staff. Liked the upstairs and comfy yet modern environment. Just OK: I didn't love the food. We got the nosh basket that I thought would be a little bigger and have more variety. There was just one sauce that I didn't really care for. It was a little expensive for what it was. I had the frittata as my entrée and it was pretty good, but I only ate a little and I didn't like it enough to take the rest home (and I like to take things home). The eggs and bagel were the best parts. The menu was huge so perhaps I made some poor choices? So so: Service was nice but very slow. We had to ask about things several times. I get it your busy, but as a gig driver I am representing a customer that paid good money for your food and also paid for delivery. The experience has gotten so much better. I think of fun times in my 20s and my best friend Paul when I come here for various different reasons. RIP Paul . Anyway I've only been here like one other time. Too expensive for my taste but I've been searching for deals lately and they have 50% off all alcohol for a few hours per day. The other location near the galleria was good. They have a nicer, new building. We wanted to sit at the bar but it's not very big and was taken up by a few other people, the other half had left over trash not removed for a few minutes. Anyway I ordered the "Holy cerveza" which was $9 and she got the Manhattan which was $12. The only difference I thought between the $2 extra michelada, the one I ordered and the other one is a garnish on top. She forgot the garnish so I said you can just charge me for the regular one no big deal. She got defensive and said she'll have to charge for the one I ordered because one has just hot sauce in it the other michelada mix. I don't know if flat out lying or just misinformed because I just had a few at the other location and it tasted like a full michelada. Anyways I ended up having to take it back because it was flat and barely cold. That's when the problems arose because instead of acting in normal restaurant procedure they started fighting me and got defensive. I've worked in restaurants before and have had people take things back many times. You're supposed to just oblige and do it, no big deal. I noticed in the mess pile at the bar sitting there for like 15 minutes while we were at the table there were 2 open Coronas. They poured those to make my michelada. That's why it was flat. I even had my girl sip it, she said it tasted flat too and she's a huge drinker so I know I wasn't just trippin. Anyways I was going to order some more drinks, maybe an appetizer or two but I just said to myself screw this, the vibes are just wayy off. So just got the check. Felicia tried to rip my girlfriend off charging her a total of $13, she tipped $3 which on a $6 drink is more than fair. She added my drink for $4, which I took back only after having two sips after realizing it was flat. I don't tolerate disrespect so I asked for the $4 back. That was when things got crazy because Felicia started looking at me like she was stupid and couldn't understand simple math a 1st grader would know. Then these other girls started yelling and cussing at us for literally no reason because I demanded my money back, righteously so. The girl made fun of me for wanting the $4 back and I tried to ignore her but she wanted to kill me so I finally said fine you give me the $4 then. If she was really big shit she would've given it to me because to her money ain't a thing right? Nope just another hypocrite. Americans are insane nowadays and too many restaurants especially in Montrose I noticed try to rip people off. I partially blame the owners too for not paying people a fair wage and only paying them in crumbs. The billionaires, elites, restaurant/business owners have everyone fighting over scraps when we should all come together and fight them. Anyway I'm blessed to be able to travel the world so I'm glad I get to get away from Houston for a long time. The food is great! I love, love, love their fried pickles. The location in Austin as well as the Montrose location have an excellent kitchen staff. I hate the customer service. Most recently I waited 15 minutes before our waiter (Jason M.) even visited our table. My partner immediately received the coffee but was not provided any sugar. The table next to us politely offered their coffee. My drink took another 20 minutes to arrive and when it arrived- it was wrong. The pickles arrived, hot and delicious as always, and afterwards Jason threw down two saucers in front of each of us, presumably for the pickles, without a word. He never asked us how the food was or asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks. The sandwiches arrived and the Reuben was scrumptious as ever. When we finally managed to flag Jason M. down after woofing down our sandwiches we asked for the bill and two desserts. My partner's dessert came immediately but mine, the bread pudding, had a wait. I expected as much. But after 10 minutes passed and Jason had passed my table several times without checking on us again, I decided to go to the To-Go counter to see if my pudding was there. It was. A small sliver of bread pudding to go with the excruciating wait. I definitely will not be dining in Katz's again. Maybe DoorDash can get my pickles to me next time. read more

My grandfather was the first person to take me here. It was 2:30 in the morning back when I was in high school. He and my grandmother just came home from a little night out and I was still up. He was hungry and craving KATZ. He order the pastrami sandwich with French fries and it was so big we could share it between us two. By the way so delicious. After, he had order the Lisa's Belgium waffle, which was a life changer. I felt like it was the best dessert I ever tried. We were seated downstairs in the back. I did want to go upstairs, but I didn't see an elevator. This is a kosher restaurant. First of all, I was with children and the acknowledged and accommodated us rather quickly. Not being from the Houston area, this was a big plus for me because children and waiting is a challenge. Our waiter was doing his best keeping up with all of our requests. He did forget about some of our drinks, but he was really nice about it and we appreciated the kindness from him. Our food was good. I think maybe the portions of the appetizers were rather small for the price, but overall, it was a good experience and the kids ate it up. Food was excellent and the desserts even better! My kids approved the cheese curds (not sure but it was an appetizer), chili cheese fries, kids pizza, and the chicken tenders. I had the chicken parm sandwich.
