If you're looking for casual dining but with a bit more than a casual atmosphere, Katz's is the way to go. Open 24/7, it's a great place to meet up with friends, take a date, or have a drink. The menu is large (literally) and has many options to choose from. When it comes to food, it can be a hit or miss. Most of the menu taste great, but if you're unfamiliar or unsure, be sure to ask your server's opinion on a menu item. My personal favorites are the pastas and cheesecake. Best cheesecake ever. Drinks are great and plenty and the bartenders are pretty knowledgeable. There are few beers on tap, and I wish they offered just a few dessert wines. No, there's no happy hour; I know, I'm disappointed too. Overall, Katz's is one of my personal favorites and I would definitely recommend for any occasion. read more

We walked in to eat here for my birthday. They were kind of busy. There were 3 (I'm assuming) managers sitting at a table by the door. They said to have a seat and someone would be right with us. 10 minutes later were still sitting there with no menus, no drinks, nothing. So we get up to go somewhere else. Let me start off by saying Michell greeted me at the front door and I instantly became overwhelmed with the feeling of excitement. Along with the grade A+ welcoming I received I was instantly impressed with the selection of cakes and cheesecakes. The menu options were nothing short of spectacular. Upon ordering I began the notion of presenting them with a silent opportunity. Either my review will be really good and my mind will be blown with flavors and spices or I will be sadly dissatisfied. I ordered the Ruben and a Philly cheesesteak. The Ruben was spectacular!! The corn beef was so flavorful I had to sit it down just to admire it. There was a slight vinegar flavor in the sauce that could be dialed down a slight bit but the rye bread added a stability that could hold a elephant. Sweet potato fries are fried to perfection and the house slaw it the perfect way to tie it all together. It also comes with a dill pickle I would recommend saving that for last and pairing every bite with the slaw. The Philly cheesesteak was one for the books honestly it should be called a New York cheesesteak because the flavors of every borrow were inside each bite. I'm highly recommending Katz for anyone who lives in Houston or Just visiting. Definitely a Historic landmark at this point and from this day forward I declare April 23rd national Katz Day!! read more

Went here Saturday night with my dude. Had the skinny (not in cals tho :) ) Ruben and classic Ruben for my guy- our world is better. Forgot to check in but we plan another putting this Saturday to try something else. Sandwiches are big- even the skinny size I ended up taking half home. So, Texas-sized portions for sure. The sides on the menu are extra unless otherwise noted in the margins above the sections. We got regular fries and sweet potato fries. I wish the fries were a bit crunchier but they tasted great either way - that's just a preference. Didn't have room for dessert, unfortunately. read more

Went in to eat dinner with friend and had a horrible experience with being harassed by a man at another table. Asked for manager and they basically said it was our fault and that he was just "drunk". Being drunk is not a excuse for any behavior. Told us he would not be kicked out and we could either move or leave. Wow this place is awesome!!! Such a cute atmosphere! And there's reserved parking just for the restaurant across the street and behind the building. Wow! The menu is a little overwhelming but so creative! I love trying new things and I got the egg cream for a drink which is a slightly carbonated chocolate milk. I also had the monte Kristo for a sandwich! Let me tell you!..... to DIE FOR!!! With the raspberry chipotle sauce on the side!!!! Omg and the melted cheese! Wow so delish! I also tried the potato knish as a side instead of French fries. It was also so good with a crispy outside and a mashed potato inside! Everything was served super hot! Oh! And for an appetizer I started with stuffed cabbage (holishkes) which is a Hungarian dish. It had a nice sweet tomato flavor filled with meat and rice! So good! And lastly I had a Jewish dessert called noodle kugel (Loksken) which is a warm almost like cake but with noodles and raisins in the bottom with a sweet vanilla flavor. I really liked their pancakes. I have wanted to try their desserts, but I get too full from my entree to order. LOL! I really like this place. I have visited many times through the years. Staff is always friendly, service is always great and the food is just what I expect. However, my first bad experience was a few months ago when I stopped in alone and was told to sit at the bar by the hostess. When I pulled a stool to sit, one of the servers confronted me rather rudely and loudly that I couldnt sit there yet until 15 minutes later. Shocked that I was treated so rudely I clarified with her that I was instructed to sit there and would gladly sit wherever they wanted to sit me. It didnt sit well with me that I was treated poorly however the waitstaff more than made up for it. Ofcourse luckily I didnt get the same lady that made a scene of me pulling out a stool. That experience wont stop me from visiting again. I hope to see improvement in manners going forward. read more

They put me on hold for 15 minutes, so I hang up and call back and let them know "I think you forgot about me." To their response, "sorry sir...could you please hold again?" Absolutely horrendous food. They should be ashamed to call themselves Katz's -- no way they deserve to share the name of the famous deli in NYC. Matzo ball soup tasted like Cup o'Noodles, pastrami was inedible (beyond fatty and had no flavor), a piece of pepper in the omelette had a label still attached to it, and the side of bacon never came. Came for lunch on a Tuesday. Matzo ball soup was excellent. Reuben sandwich was cold and took forever to appear. Hubby didn't like the egg salad sandwich as well as some other delis. This place just isn't as good as it once was. The service is WAY too leisurely for a week day lunch. read more

My friend and I came in post-concert and did not expect the authentic deli environment for a 24 hour place but it was such a nice surprise. The chips they give you for a dip are toasted sliced bagels. How dope. Both the drinks we tried were perfect (a cosmo and green drink), the interior is killer, and the food was high quality. The server treated us with respect even though we were underdressed for the general crowd. He provided really excellent service and I was happy with the whole experience. read more

A lost opportunity to impress on so many levels. It's hard to mess up deli food, but I love Kenny & Ziggy's so much more. We were seated quickly and our server appeared immediately to take drink orders without giving us a moment to look at the menu or take a breath, really. I ordered a cup of chicken matzo ball soup, which arrived with our meals. We had to ask for napkins and silverware. And drink refills. Long waits all around for checks. The food was not bad. My grilled pastrami sandwich was adequate but didn't blow me away like ones I've had at K&Z. The experience felt like I was in a pricey restaurant pretending to be a New York deli. They open 24x7 What it's really good in Houston if you want to diner late The sandwiches "try" to imitate New York style, but not, a long way to go. The menu is very original, it looks like a newspaper. We ordered French onion soup and Reuben sandwiches ( NY signature), and we didn't like it. Price was fair, including beer, wine and coffee. Has everyone in Houston been to Katz's? No. Well okay then, almost everyone in Houston has been to Katz's -- it never Kloses. Usually my trips to Katz's involve the need for drunk food. After a long night of drinking, nothing hits the spot quite like sucking down cheesecake through a straw. The best thing about them, other than the obvious YOU'RE DRINKING CHEESECAKE, is that they are HUGE! Literally an entire piece of NY Cheesecake and scoops of Blue Bell ice cream in a blender. A friend and I decided to split one once, and when it arrived our other friend (who was sadly not in on the cheesecake shake-y goodness) thought there had been a mistake, and that we had gotten 2 Full cheesecake shakes. We had not: they're just that big. But something that good don't come cheap. A cheesecake shake'll run you $8.99. Their other desserts are also colossal and fantastic! They always bring extra forks 'cause it's hard to finish one alone. The rest of the menu is what you expect from an NY Deli themed restaurant. Giant sandwiches, soup, hot dogs, and breakfast stuff. My knowledge only extends to the sammies, soup, and dessert, but I've never been disappointed by the food here. Service is usually quick, and it never seems to be "really crowded" like no matter what time you show up there are lots of people, but no one is waiting for a table, or shoved in the corner. I was at the nail salon today which was airing the Travel Channel show Food Wars. Today's episode was pastrami on rye in NYC - Katz's vs. 2nd Avenue Deli. After 30 minutes of looking at succulent pastrami being sliced, shown close-up and in detail, and hearing people talk about how great it is, I got hungry for...guess what? Pastrami on rye. The problem was I don't live in NYC. The other problem was I had an LSU football game to watch (die-hard fan here) at 2:30 PM, and it was 2:05 PM so I didn't have a lot of time. Kenny and Ziggy's is the better deli, but I thought why not give Katz's of Houston a shot after hearing about the original which has been in business for over 100 years. Surely some secrets have been passed along to the various franchises right? WRONG. Very wrong. The sandwich was edible, but that's about it. It left me wanting another sandwich, but I was knee-deep in football. Oy vey Katz's. You left me verklempt, wondering where your chutzpah is. I've been to the real Katz's in Austin, and the really real Katz's on Houston Street in the Lower East Side/East Village. So when I rolled into Katz here and saw the hanging salami, the subway benches, the classic NYC pub ceiling tiles...it was like a glimpse into the way people not from NY think that NYC is.. Parking - they have their own lot, but it's often packed. Ambiance - Faux York, not mad at it, but it's a bit cartoony Clientele - Drunk folks when I went Food - Pastrami on Rye - comes in 3 sizes, which is a new thing to me. I'm used to paying through the eye balls for an overstuffed sandwich. (been to David's house of brisket in BK, 2nd Avenue Deli which is actually on 3rd avenue, Stage Deli and Carnegie Deli). I went with the middle. The pastrami was fine, as was the rye bread. It came with 1 packet of Mustard. - the french fries - underfried steak fries. This may be a legit style somewhere, but had I known that it wasn't the battered skinny fries like the one in Austin, I would have just gotten the sandwich. Service - With a spot full of drunks and other attention seeking customers, the staff responds in kind. I'm sure they're pleasant enough, but I really didn't want to chillax and I just wanted to get my food to go. Can you see the problem already? The owners of Katz's decided that rather than the 4-5 hostesses being able to take your order, the harried bartender should take your order. Booze is a profit center in most restaurants, so I cram to understand why you'd have your MVP wasting her time on people who don't want to eat there. So the 3 guys in front of me waited...and waited...and finally the bartender got to them. I followed up. Orders were put in. .....10 minutes later..Order #1 came out, a fairly large looking bag. 5 minutes later Order #2 came out a smaller bag. ...She made prolly 4-5 drinks while I was waiting. There were also a couple of plain-clothes manager types behind the bar, doing Jehovah knows what. I know I made eye contact with her...but i'd say 10 minutes of the food sitting in bags to her back, before she called out some names. Guess who had the bigger first bad that had been getting cold for ~ 20 minutes? At first I was kinda salty at the bar tender until I analyzed the situation. Whoever designed their work flow set the place up to fail. I see this all the time, employees only doing what they need to do, and no one ever taking any sort of initiative. I guess they're lucky to have such a profitable business that they can afford to be some lack luster. read more

Katz's is an interesting place. A 24/7 deli that never closes, no day, no how and serves up some better than average New York style deli sandwiches and amazingly delicious desserts. By the way, the dessert counter was the very first thing to catch my eye. Katz's is a two level restaurant and most times you are given a preference of where to sit. Some people say there's a difference in upstairs and downstairs, though what the difference is they have never made clear. If you're into people watching then you'll love it here as I was told everyone and everything stops in Katz's at one time or another. Maybe that's why some have a seating preference? People watching does not interest me at all so I can't say. As long as I am given a place to sit and eat, I don't care what level I'm sitting on. The menu here is extensive with many varieties of sandwiches in all styles: deli, open-faced, over-stuffed. Anything you would want in a sandwich, they probably have it here. Sandwiches can be ordered in a Klassic size, which is plentiful, or a New York size, which is monstrous. Some of the deli sandwiches I've tried are the French dip (yeah, kind of standard but a good standard), the open-faced meatball, chicken parmesan and meatloaf. I'll give the sandwiches a decent rating. I found the marinara on the chicken parmesan to be somewhat sweet which is something a marinara should never be. The chicken itself was breaded just right and fried perfectly without greasiness or sogginess. The meatballs were a little on the firm side rather than being a softer texture that I prefer. They weren't dry by any means and had a good flavor. The marinara on the meatball sandwich was better because it didn't have that sweet aftertaste like the chicken parmesan. I was told they use the same marinara (their own) on both sandwiches. I suppose it could depend on who is making the marinara. The French dip was incredibly good. The meat was so tender and juicy. I found no nasty fatty or gristly pieces that are always an instant appetite killer. Instead it was a plentiful quantity of meat on soft, warm bread with a crunch outer crust and excellent melted provolone that brought everything together. The au jus was savory and the perfect complement. So standard or not, this is one of my favorites here. The meatloaf was surprisingly good! I'm picky picky with meatloaf because it's an either "like it or don't like it" kind of food. There are two kinds of meatloaves: good meatloaves and terrible ones. There are no in-between meatloaves. I'm happy Katz's is a good one. The taste is a good blend of meats and seasonings along with sautèed onions and a rich brown gravy. Sandwiches are listed as served on the bread types that Katz's recommends for each specific menu item. You can request a different bread if you do not like what is listed. Most are served on rye or French roll with some on sourdough. The fries are fries. They are good, crisp and hot. I found the onion rings to be just average and are a small portion compared to everything else. One of the best things about Katz's are the desserts. An array of cheesecakes, milkshakes, cakes and cookies will leave even the most voracious sweet teeth (like mine) satisfied. I truly enjoyed the chocolate eruption: beautiful layers of chocolate cream cake with nuts, turtle cheesecake and more chocolate. The huge hot fudge sundae is divine. I love red velvet cake and although I completely enjoyed the red velvet cheesecake here, I found it to be a bit dense with a dryness in texture. The flavor was great and made up for it. The black and white cookies are a sweet sensation and a to-go must for me. Not only are they cool looking but they are so, so yummy! A large sugar cookie frosted on one half with white icing and the other half a black (actually dark fudge) icing. It's perfect to take home and have with coffee or tea or on its own. On my definite to try next list are what is touted as the world's tallest chocolate layer cake, rice pudding and carrot cake. Add the cheesecake shake to that along with the death by chocolate and the caramel fudge cheesecake. Desserts are the best part of the meal. To sum up a lot of rambling, I'll say Katz's is a good place. I wouldn't call it an exact New York deli like I'm used to but I'll say for this area it's as close as you can get. Portions are huge and prices are reasonable for what you get. It's a place I can say I'll come back to and the desserts will be at the forefront of my visit. read more

I have always been a huge fan of Katz's Deli but after a couple of experiences in the past year and a half I have been taking little breaks from it. But after last night's experience, I don't think I will ever be returning to this place. Not that we didn't get the seat we wanted (which apparently was the case later on because of one of the people in our group and I ended up leaving) but because upon arrival there were two hostesses at the hostess stand. One was a very professional older lady. The other was a much younger girl who was sassing around in a drunken stupor (and if she was sober, then she was extremely rude and unprofessional). After being greeted ... or if that was a greeting, then wow ... she went ahead and asked me how many and I told her that it will be a total of 5. She said you will need all five to be seated. I said, that is fine because they are on their way over here right now. However, when she was writing my information down she wrote "3" and I corrected her. Instead of apologizing or anything of that sort she had to grab her marker and crossed out the form and wrote the correct information in another line. It's not what she said or did not say but rather her body language was filled with such negative energy that it set me over the edge and shortly after the rest of the party arrived and our seat was ready, I just could not stay any longer. They're overpriced, oversized menu doesn't bode well with me. I've eaten around their menu a bit wanting something to be really good, but alas--failure. . . It's not bad food, but it is certainly not memorable. It's just food and when I go somewhere I don't want just food--I want memorable and exciting. On a different note--they're cheescake shake is very memorable. It's not like drinking cheescake, it IS drinking cheescake. In fairness, this should be a 3.5. But I never round up, so 3 it is. Have you ever sat back and thought to yourself, "holy crap, how did two sandwiches, some iced tea, and some jalapeno poppers total $43 after tax?!?!". I have, recently too. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not cheap. I've been known to blown 30 bucks at Godiva alone (and that's just for myself...its bad but true). But that total freaked me out and knocked a little of the wind out of my sails after an otherwise mostly awesome meal. Katz's, that spot at the Westheimer bend that never kloses [sic], is pretty fantastic for a number of reasons, above and beyond the never klosing part. For starters, they have a dedicated lot with lots of space, but you have to run across Westheimer just past a relative blind spot for pedestrians. As long as you time it right...this is a really good thing. But if you've been out enjoying the pleasures of the night, keep an eye on your friends, that road is crazy! Inside houses lots and lots of tables and has a second floor full of seating as well. You're greeted right when you walk in and everyone throughout the restaurant, while busy, is very friendly. The food, in my opinion is pretty great as well. Most of the sandwiches are in the gigantic-to-omghuge range, depending on which you prefer. However, despite being 10-15 bucks, you do not get a side with your sandwich...though most would say that you may not even need one. Also, even though the menu is humongous, don't just shoot from the hip and order blindly because 1) you'll overlook awesome things and 2) you'll miss the part where 8 tiny jalapeno poppers is 9 dollars. Seriously, I sound cheap...but 43 bucks! That aside, our food was fantastic, our server was sarcastic but prompt (sort of like a nicer version of what I've always imagined NYC was like), and even though he forgot a few things we ordered, it turned out ok because we were so full at the end that I couldn't have eaten it anyway.
