It was ok... but I've also had great Ramen in Los Angeles. So I may be biased! So the concept and ambiance of the restaurant are pretty cool. The front wall opens like a garage. Though, on a very hot day with hot ramen (though they also do sushi) the front should be shut. As for the Ramen. Some stuff worked and some didn't. The egg was delicious, soft boiled perfectly with jammy yolks and had great soy sauce flavor. The noodles were not over cooked and the meat was tender and flavorful. However, both mine and my husbands broth (I had the black garlic he had the pork) were not so great. Almost a metallic taste to them. Also, almost no vegetables in the Ramen. I was pretty disappointed. Mine only had green onions in it. The tempura was also kinda soggy. Some piece were crispy but on the broccoli and sweet potato, they were soggy. The server was great. They were very attentive. We did not complain about the food because we were hot and just wanted to hurry up instead of waiting longer. Also, they need to fix some of their tables that are very wobbly! read more

Ramen lukewarm, service slow, and ambiance was cute, but too dark where we were seated. The garlic miso ramen ($18) didn't have a rich flavor and honestly tasted watered down. The eggs were perfectly cooked and I loved the corn. The black garlic ramen ($19) had a strong garlic flavor without being overwhelming. The pork wasn't overly fatty. Both ramens came out lukewarm and took nearly 40min after ordering for them to be served (30 min after the calamari was served) which felt like a long time especially at 5pm on a Sunday with only a few tables seated. Would recommend the calamari, it tasted fresh, but was a very small serving for $8. The ambiance is cute, but very dark, so it was difficult to see what I was eating. I hadn't been to Kawa since before they temporarily closed due to an unexpected fire in the apartments above, but I'm so glad I finally went back. I tried The Amazing Roll, and it was truly amazing! I love when a roll leans on the fresher side, and this one nailed it--cold and delicious lobster salad on top, tempura shrimp and avocado inside, and a spicy kimchi sauce to bring it all together. I also had the tonkotsu ramen. The pork was great, but I wish the egg was a little jammier, and the portion felt a bit small for the price. I grew up around a lot of great ramen spots, so I'll admit my expectations are high. It's a solid option for a ramen fix, but not the best I've ever had. Our server was outstanding--quick, attentive, and had such a contagious positive energy. Inside it is also very cute with lots of natural wood and it definitely has a modern feel. Overall, a great experience! I'll definitely be back for The Amazing Roll because it lives up to its name. read more

I quite like the lighting and indoor decoration in here also, and the atmosphere is very hip and lively. It is typically busy when I have gone for dinner here. Kawa is a go-to for me when I'm in the mood for ramen and don't want to go far from where I live on East side. Tonkotsu always hits the spot. Their edamame hasn't been consistent in how its made--I realized I've become an edamame critic because I know the texture and taste I prefer, but this time it was buttery goodness with tasty salt flakes. Tako yaki is always my fav appetizer too. The Karage dinner was pretty good--meat was super juicy on the inside and it was beautifully fried and crispy on the outside. The Hellfire wasn't as hot as my friend preferred it and has had it from here before, just noticed more of the heat of the oil than the overall dish. Service is always great! I appreciate that they have outdoor seating too, definitely my preference during warmer months. read more

So good, so good! Normally I don't eat outside because I don't want to fight the bugs, the wind, and I especially don't like parklettes because then you're dealing with peds and their dogs or cars blasting up and down the street. But the stars aligned and we had a lovely quiet afternoon that was perfect for sitting outside. Our server was lovely. She was fantastic. We hardly had to wait at any point and she was super efficient as well as friendly. We did four rolls (pictured) the T-Rex, Godzilla, Rainbow, and Ninja roll. Usually I'd throw a California roll in just because my husband doesn't always love sushi the way I do. He dug all of these rolls. I thought the Rainbow roll was a bit fishy, but he loved it. It's hard to pick one roll because the Ninja, T-Rex, and Godzilla were simply divine. The Godzilla has some heat to it which was nice since it's really rich roll. We also had Goyza and Edamame. It was all just so good. What a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go back and try the ramen. read more

This place has been on my list and I'm so happy we selected it before a movie at the Oriental! We went on a Monday evening so it wasn't wildly busy and there was tons of available street parking. We were seated immediately and drinks taken (just sodas--nothing wild). The food was outstanding--so beautiful and fresh. I got two rolls, my buddy got soup, sashimi, and avocado salad. My rolls were perfect and my pal said the avocado salad was his favorite anywhere. I can't wait to come back and try the gyoza and ramen. Holy cow! This place is Awesome. I was told we were going here for my kids birthday lunch. I blew it off as just a lunch, I was wrong. The place is casual and unassuming, but who cares? The service was friendly and attentive, so that is great. As a family we had the pork dumplings (name?), I think it was Gyoza, And they were delish. As a main I had the black Garlic Ramen and it was delish. The broth was indescribable and the pork and noodles were the bests. My wife had the veggie tempura and loved it. Making a reservation for seven was easy. My party was greeted promptly and shown to a booth near the windows. Our server was friendly, prompt, and thoughtful. Two of my guests seem to very much enjoy their dishes, including a very attractive Ramen bowl. The vegetable tempura, while hot and crispy, was relatively flavorless. So good! Didn't know what to expect. We just looked for a place somewhere in Milwaukee while we were in town. I had the spicy Ramen and it was so good. Three spicy levels and it was the right level spiciness. I asked for an extra wavy noodle and they delivered. It was great to have extra noodles which I like to do. We got rice for the kids. I got some hot saki and it was exactly what I was looking for to go with my ramen. We sat outside and it was a nice, peaceful area (even though we were next to the street). The chicken katsu entree was pretty good but I didn't love the sauce it came with, it was kind of citrus-y. I loved how thin the chicken katsu was and that it was white meat. I went before a movie on a Friday night and the service was slow as expected but they were extremely friendly and apologetic. I posted a photo of my half eaten ramen due to being too hungry and it filled me up! If you go while it's busy get a starter because that came out extremely quickly. I got the spicy tonkotsu ramen. First thing I noticed was that the serving size was smaller than most places I've had ramen at. It was stuffed with all the toppings so I couldn't get to any of the broth until clearing out some of the solids first. Broth was good. The noodles had to have been made in house because they were 5/5. Pork belly was okay, not that flavorful or juicy. Solid place if you're craving sushi. The service was good and our server was super nice and attentive. Ordered the beef tartare to start and the sushi deluxe. Beef tartare was good and the dressing/sauce that it came with was delicious. I love the mix of citrus and sweetness of the sauce. Caution for the jalapenos as it can get a little spicy. The sushi deluxe came with a side of salad and miso soup. It was not bad for Milwaukee. I walked in around 6pm and was able to be seated for two on a Friday. I started off with the Salmon Delight $9. You get 4 bite size pieces of spicy crab that is covered with salmon and assorted tobiko. This was flavorful and saucy. We split 4 rolls - Philadelphia $8, Spicy Tuna $8, Rising Sun $15, and Wasabi Toro Roll $18. I was very disappointed in the Philadelphia and Spicy Tuna roll. The philly had very little smoked salmon and felt like I was eating majority cream cheese and cucumber. I did enjoy the thinly cut cucumber though. The spicy tuna roll was very dry and lacked flavor. I know these are popular rolls but I would pass on these. The Rising Sun was my favorite roll of the night. It had great texture and flavor. All thanks to the tempura flakes and fatty salmon. The Wasabi Toro roll had buttery fatty texture. It was a simple roll and think I would prefer this as sushi. I enjoyed it but would probably skip this the next time. Overall, I really enjoyed the Salmon Delight and the Rising Sun. I am curious to try some of the other special rolls and will have to stop by again. First things first. The Ramen and Vegetable tempura are amazing. If you want excellent Ramen, get it here. However, our dine in experience was not good. Friday night 5pm. Not busy when we got there but got very busy as we ate. We were asked multiple times -once by someone not our server - if we wanted a box. One time we were asked as she reached for and touched one of the bowls. Didn't even really wait for an answer. There was also a constant surveillance of the dining room looking for people that were about to finish. It was very clear they needed people to eat and get out. Very uncomfortable. After we had enough of that we asked for a box. The server brought us the check and we paid. Then realized we didn't get the box. Found the server, asked what happened and they replied "oh, did you want that? Sorry." No attempt to make it right, just an inexperienced, no clue sort of reaction. Not acceptable. Not even close. Find somewhere else to dine in. read more

The rave about Kawa is true! I was not surprised to see the restaurant filled with customers only about an hour before close because the food was phenomenal! We started off with the Barbecued Squid and Dynamite Shrimp. Both blew me away (even more than the ramen which is why we came). The squid was so tender and the sweet and salty soy marinade made it so much better. The dynamite shrimp had the perfect kick, not too spicy, although the name is misleading. It was almost tempura fried so it was light and crispy and the creamy sauce just added to the dish. We split the Garlic Miso Ramen and it was just enough for the both of us, including our appetizers. The noodles were chewy and thin, which I love, and the broth was so flavorful! I love a good miso garlic flavor so I knew I would love it. The toppings complimented the noodles and soup so well. Bamboo shoots, corn, soft boiled egg, fried pork, fish cakes and seaweed- wow. Would get this again or even the sushi because that looked amazing as well. The only thing I would say is the menu looks a little messy and is a bit confusing to read- but an easy adjustment and definitely didn't affect the experience we had!
