We were trying to decide where to eat and walked around and found this little spot. It is small but we were lucky that we got here 20 minutes after they opened so there was no wait. We notice more people started coming in after 6pm. The food took awhile but we didn't mind since we were able to enjoy each dish and it gave us time to decide what to order next. We ordered the real crab roll and spicy roll. Like others say, the rolls were small and there wasn't much fish. The roll was good but wish there was more fish. I recommend passing on the roll if you are looking to fill up unless you order a few rolls but the value isn't there. We also order the nigiri. This is worth the money. The fish are fresh and very savory. We ended up ordering seconds. We didn't know that they had blue fin until I tried to order my second set of nigiri and was told they ran out of one of the tuna that I was trying to order. Glad I was able to order the blue fin. My kids tried it for the first time and wanted to order more. Highly recommend the nigiri if you come here to eat. We ordered appetizers as well. My kids ate all the gyoza before I can try one so I guess it was good. We also got the tuna tataki. My kids and I enjoyed it especially with the red condiment. Not sure what it is. The other condiment that came with it tasted like ginger. My wife order the sake margarita and I had a little sip of her drink. The margarita was on point. It was fruity (strawberry flavor) but not too sweet and not sour either. You can taste the sake but not as much which is a good thing if you like a mix drink where it's perfectly blended. If we didn't have to catch our shuttle back, I would have ordered this after my beer. All and all, it was a good dining experience. The food does take some time to come but it's not too long. My only disappointment was how little fish were in the roll. Other than that, the food was good. We didn't try the hotpot since the cost was extremely high where they charge for per person instead of by order. Definitely give this place a try if you like nigiri and check if they have blue fin if you do try the nigiri. read more

Last year we walked by this small Japanese rest. after we went to Vine and Grill rest. for lunch at the Westin. This year we remembered to give them a visit. There's only about 6 or 7 small tables in this cozy place, we love it. My hubby had the Chirashi don-- thinly sliced assorted sashimi on a bed of rice...quite filling...he likes it. Also added an Unagi(eel) roll. I had the grilled sable fish which is one of their recommendations and it did not disappoint. Also added spinach with miso bean paste. This is the worst Japanese restaurant our entire party has ever been to. 4 out of 5 pieces of our sashimi had large fish bones in them (we could see them sticking out). When we mentioned this to our server, the owner (Mr. Tom Akama) came out and jokingly told us that the bones were supposed to be there, as they are a part of the fish. He acted like we were crazy for even complaining. He even had the nerve to ask us for volunteers to go to the kitchen and help him pick out fish bones. What a total jerk! I have never in my life had bones in my sashimi at any Japanese restaurant. We could let one piece with a bone slide, but 4 pieces is completely unacceptable, especially for any so-called Japanese sushi chef. This could have sent any of us to the hospital. The eggplant dish was terrible, and we all ended up spitting most of it out. In addition, the portions were tiny and the quality was dissappointing. Our entire party left the restaurant outraged and still hungry. Avoid this restaurant at all costs! read more

Ok I'm trying to figure out why this place doesn't have better reviews. It's sooooo great and the employees are amazing. One lady was very comical and made our experience a lot better! We got the chef special and they added this fatty tuna and I swear it was the best tuna I ever ate! Of course I ordered more. Expensive but delightful, I don't regret it one bit! From the soup to the rolls and sashimi it was one of the best I've had. It was so fresh! We walked away full surprisingly and we usually eat a lot more. There was bones in our sashimi. Sure, the fish itself wasnt bad but the sashimi, had bones! The owner, just made a joke about it, claiming it was normal, he refused to even apologize, he said "of course, fish have bones"! That's horrible and dangerous. Anyways, would not recommend DONT GO! My wife and I ate here the other night after we spoke to two customers who said it was the best sushi that they have ever had, anywhere. I was a little hesitate due to the 3.5 stars, but after reading reviews that had nothing to do with the food and the recomendations, my wife and I decided to give it a try. We decided to try the Spring/Fall Special which included a little bit of everything and included a Hot Pot. It was all delicious and the Sushi and Sashimi were outstanding. So, I would rate this 3.5 if I could. Generally it was a good experience. The best thing was Tom (the owner) and how welcoming he was. We went twice. First time was for sashimi and rolls. We got to try a number of unique dishes (at a price). However, it was fresh. And we ordered three rolls that were all tasty but didn't stand out. What did stand out was Tom's cod which was beautifuly cooked and the their special which was tempura eel . So amazing. The next night we ordered the nabe and the cod and eel again. the nabe was okay but I am not sure if it was worth the price tag. And we both felt that the broth was salty and we couldn't finish it because we were so bloated. And we also orderd the sea urchin and it didn't taste fresh. So I wouldn't run back there but there may be more hidden dishes that are amazing. So if you are feeling lucky give this place a go. read more

The ambiance was somewhat lacking, but the staff here are a standout and it's great for a quiet dinner near the Whistler gondola. We end up eating here more than once on every single trip to Whistler. We only order nigiri and always find it fresh and delicious. Tom is great and alway accommodating even the couple times we've tried to get in without a reservation. If they have the chutoro, o toro, shimaaji, and tai on the menu definitely don't skip these! To those complaining about not being able to order takeout, there is only one sushi chef, so it's likely they would not be able to keep up with takeout and dine in volume simultaneously. Our waitress was a sweetheart and came with a massive plate piled with fresh cut veggies and sliced beef. As others have noted - Kaze is located inside the Westin Hotel complex. I stopped in one day late afternoon for a snack - an order of spicy tuna rolls and an order of Smoked Salmon. My server was a very friendly and nice lady. As I was the only customer - she came over to chat with me while my order was being made. Both the rolls and the salmon were very fresh tasting and absolutely delicious! Service was good and I did not feel like they were attempting to get me out the door. What a special place! The staff are so nice. The night I was in, we were lucky to be seated next to two separate parties that the chef came out to talk to because they were longtime (I think 10+ years) customers. The chef laughed and sat with them it was cool to see. All the food we ordered was fresh and delicious. The prawn tempura was the best I've ever had! The tempura also included green beans which I love, and onion wedges. I really liked the pickled plum roll, and the dumplings were so tender and delicious. One of my favorite places to go in Whistler! For large parties there are big rooms in the back. I recommend the sukiyaki hot pot and kamikaze roll! My brother and I go on ski trips regularly, and this go around, we were skiing Blackcomb in Whistler BC. Mind you, my brother lives on the continent and GOOD sushi is sometimes hard to come by. We find Kaze and decide to have our dinner there. Our waiteress was very friendly and helpful with the menu. I order a sashim (raw seafood) platter. I ask her to give us everything that is fresh with the exception of salmon. Why she asks? I told her I'd rather have tuna or snapper or anything, just no salmon please..... She says "PLEASE!!! we have very special salmon tonight.... PLEASE try. If you don't like it, I will take it back and bring you something else..." Okay, bring us the "special salmon" then..... OMG!!!!!! Surpassed the taste and texture of the fattiest toro or hamachi..!!!!! I've never had anything so tasteful! So I need to find out what made this salmon so "special" and the answer was: It is wild salmon caught in the upper Pacific; their sushi man goes to get the fish from his purveyor who sells only the BEST of the WEST..... We proceed to order another order of salmon sashimi and everything else is was as good as it could be and the rest.... the rest is history which the taste and texture of this special salmon will forever be remembered by me. I love the food: good miso soup, not salty, just right; the seafood salad was loaded with seafood, yum, the rainbow roll was well executed. I love all the fresh fish (no CA roll filler in these rolls). However, the restaurant wouldn't allow me to place a to go order. I was staying at the Westin and just wanted to take my food to my suite and watch TV in my PJs while eating dinner - that's how I relax after a day of skiing. I don't want to put real pants on to go downstairs for dinner. They were adamant. So the second night I had to go elsewhere to get my sushi dinner. Please reconsider allowing take out because your food is great. read more

Small, local joint, but is incredibly busy so highly recommend making reservations. I came by myself and was told there would be a 15 minute wait. I was starving so I said I'd go elsewhere. I gave 1 star from Asian taste point of view. If you are non-Asian, you may find hot-pot is good enough. However, I feel hot pot tastes very bad very very bad. Water only based soup ? Not pork soup or any flavour ? Exercise me? And you sell this for 80cad for 2 person ? I don't think all Asian guys who already know what true hot pot is would like it. I travelled to Japan, China, Indonesia and HongKong. I never see this kind of water hot pot. As I said, stay away from this hotpot since it tastes bad and costs too much. For all Asian guys. There are couple of things I like, the rest of them is pretty average. 1. Uni - fresh and sweet... but then, I had to say, most Vancouver uni I tried is as good. 2. Seafood hot pot - it's got everything in there... I thought it's pretty unique to have a seafood shabu shabu there. We had the whistler nabe for two, plus the black cod, and one cup of sake and it was 125 with tip, so a bit pricey. The black cod was great but really small portion, the nabe was tasty and the portions were bigger than we thought, fed both of us really well. read more

We finally were able to get a table at Kaze during our stay in Whistler. The restaurant is small and the staff and chef very inviting. Everything we had was good, but the whole experience was just off. For starters, none of the "special" fish were available. What we had was good, but not impressive - a few pieces of sashimi and a roll with toro. The black cod was tasty, but unfortunately full of bones which made it hard to eat. The Nabe options were something unique and we opted for a seafood Udon which was delicious! Would I go back - yep, that's why the 4 Stars (plus the chef and staff were delightful). But, I would make a reservation earlier in the evening and find out what day the fresh fish arrives. read more
