I brought my 1/2 ton pickup in for smog. Their prices listed on the wall in the shop are 60.00 for cars and light duty. The gentleman at the counter told me it would be 90.00 for the "work truck". I asked him if 1/2 ton pickups weren't light duty. He said yes but it is a work truck. I have no signs on my truck and I have a rack and a ladder on it. I told him I would be going elsewhere if he was going to charge me 90.00. He continued to tell me it was a work truck. I'm not sure why a "work truck" is any more work for him? I arrived at KC shortly after their 08:30 opening time, with one customer ahead of me. The customer waiting area is bare bones bench seating with magazines available to read. I got to watch the aftermath of a vehicle accident just a few yards away as police had called for a hauler to tow the disabled vehicle away. The smog test went smoothly and I was issued a 'pass' sheet for my records. I went online when I got home and finished my vehicle registration renewal. I'm happy with the service I received at KC Smog Center and will recommend and use them again in the future. The pricing is very reasonable and about the lowest I've seen anywhere during the past three required smog inspections on my old vehicle (OBD-II compliant, no modifications other than catback exhaust). read more

I got a coupon for this place to get a smog check for $30. They do their job, that's for sure. But definitely no customer service. The receptionist is cool, but the mechanic needs to work on his people skill. He spent a lot of time flirting with the receptionist. My car failed because of an ignition timing issue. They do offer free retests though. Took my car to another shop. Guy there told me that my timing was indeed off, but only by a slight margin. That it should have passed smog anyways. He set it regardless, but didn't charge me for it. I guess it was only off slightly to that extent. Where he felt wrong taking money for doing it. Took it back to KC Smog. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and chalked it up to different machines being used or whatever mechanic thingy is done to figure this stuff out. Mechanic dude with no people skill starts drilling me about where I got it fixed if I'm absolutely positive that it was done right. A bit patronizing. I know I don't know jack shit about cars, and I don't pretend to. But dude, relax. The receptionist could tell I was a bit put off by his demeanor so once he stepped away she explained that it was so I could pass with the free re-test instead of failing again and paying for another test to be done. That I understand and appreciate, but how am I supposed to have known that? Mechanic dude with no people skill comes back after about 15-20 minutes. Says I passed. Hooray. Then he just says "$10" Me: What? Him: $10. Me: For... what? Him: The certificate. Oh ok! So I hand him $10. Then he gets defensive while saying the re-test is free but the certificate isn't. Like I was trying to wrangle my way out of paying, when I hadn't said a thing. I was just confused by his random 10$. Use full sentences dude. I can't read your mind. I said that was fine, I just didn't understand what he meant by just saying 10$ and he immediately calms down and all of a sudden develops some semblance of manners by saying thank you to me. Too little too late homie. If you want a cheap smog test only center and don't mind a dude not speaking full sentences at you, come here. But I feel like there's similar deals to probably far friendlier places elsewhere in Sacramento. read more

I went to KC Smog Center today. Other reviews mentioned using a coupon & I found one at http://www.smogtips.com/sacramento.cfm for $29.75 for a smog check. I called to make sure I could use it & also asked if they do a free re-test if the car doesn't pass. They said the coupon was good, and they do offer a free second test. If there's no one at the desk, you can grab one of the clip-boards on the counter and fill out the paperwork (name, address, VIN, odometer, license plate, etc.) My total was $38 for a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. (This includes the certificate & sending the info to the DMV.) No appointments--walk-in only. They accept VISA & Mastercard (No checks). As other reviewers have said, it's a old building so don't expect anything fancy. It's a pretty small office / waiting area, but they have benches, a water-cooler and magazines. Very very low quality service ever since it went under new management. You definetly dont get what you pay for. And the staff knows nothing about what the term 'customer service' means they need to take a class on it. It is a one sided deal with them. Theyre only concerned with getting money out of customers but not providing quality or service in return. We as customers are at loss. I wish I could get a refund for dealing with them and not getting my moneys worth, had to double pay for services due to lack of knowledge and ability to understand. You as a customer will leave here unhappy. This is the first time I tried KC Smog to get my emissions test after paying the astronomical price of $75 two years ago in South Natomas. Never again! The technician at KC did just as well and charged much less. He was extremely friendly and swift. Although there were two cars ahead of mine, I waited a total of 10 minutes and it took about 5 minutes to complete my smog test. I was able to catch up on Hollywood gossip by gazing through their many magazines while waiting and noticed that they have a coffee machine to keep yourself awake. The absolute best part of the transaction was the price: $45! Oh, and the fact that my 2005 Scion XA passed the test. Like other reviews have mentioned, Fruitridge can be a little sketchy but I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe. I will be back in another two years! read more

In April the owner accepted the coupon and charged me $38.00 out the door with the certificate. Then today (August 2014) he told me he is the owner and he would never give me this price for my van and told me a different price. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you want to get tricked into a discounted price and then have the price raised once they get you in the door. I will not be returning to this business in the future. Take your business somewhere were you know you can trust the owner, especially when it comes to a smog or working with your car. Alright, so I will say that there is one good thing about this place, if you have a coupon it's very cheap. However, the smog center itself is extremely run down, the waiting area was hotter than outside (it was 95+ outside). It's run by a bunch of 20-25 year olds in gym shorts and shirts who are more busy cleaning there own cars and letting there friends get smogged in front of you. They quoted me 40 minutes, which was reasonable since there were 2 people ahead of me. However, they let one of their friends who showed up go before me! And I know that he wasn't there before because the two people ahead of me got there right as I did. So I had to wait over an hour in the 95 degree heat. Definitely not worth saving a few bucks, I'll go to someplace more respectful and professional next time. read more

Do not go to this shop - he does not know what he is talking about. If your car is new, and you have not changed anything - even the air cleaner - then maybe. I have a CARB (CA approved) certified air filter which has not been modified - he said it was not legal. The CARB sticker is right there on the fender where it's supposed to be. He claims I modified the part with a grinder and he can see the marks cause he's not stupid. Well stupid is as stupid does. Check the CARB number and look at the pic - no mods. I have an aftermarket gauge. The gauge is just a gauge and does not affect the computer or smog or anything. It is not plugged into the computer as he claims. It only gives information and does not fall under CARB rules. He said it's illegal. The only possible issue he got half right was I have an extension cord plugged into the OBD (computer) port so I can read the check engine light easier. He said nothing can be plugged into computer. Really??? An extension cord??? Besides his poor inspection, his customer service is awful. Not only did he try to close the hood on my arm, he would not listen to one word I said. He is very good at talking at you but good luck trying to have a conversation. $30 and 1/2 hour wasted. read more

My family has been going here for years. Mr. Hernandez is the technician that did everything from getting the paper work done to the test. He's very quiet and right to business. I called to see if I could bring in my car. He said, "No problem." I told the make and year of my car and he quote me a very low price for the smog test.
