Having been to their original location in Capitol Hill many years ago, it was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon the sister company as we were strolling around in Belltown. Really cute interior with cozy wooden booths reminiscent of street vendors in Southeast Asia. Nasi Lemak comes in generous portion and for the protein you can choose either chicken curry or beef rendang. (5/5) We also tried Rusuk Kedai which is ribs marinated with sweetened soy sauce with a little kick to it. (4/5) Roti jala comes with chicken curry dipping and is large enough for sharing with 3-4 people. (4/5) Teh Tarik is good but a bit too milky and can be stronger. (3/5) Kedai Sling is a version of Singapore Sling, refreshing on a warm summer day. A bit too sweet for my liking and can use a bit more punch. (3.5/5) Food came out quickly, friendly staff, but you may need to flag them down for attention. Overall a really nice place to have an authentic Malaysian meal and would stop by again if I'm in the area. read more

This place has been on my list for a while, but the original location always had such a long line that I never managed to get in. Recently spotted the new Belltown location while I was in the area and finally got my chance. The restaurant was inviting and quite large in space compared to the Og location in caphill. Fair warning: I went pretty close to closing time, so take my service experience with a grain of salt. It was fine -- nothing remarkable, but nothing off-putting either. On to the food, which is really what matters here. I got the nasi lemak and the mushroom pan mee, and both were excellent. Really flavorful with a lot going on texturally. The pan mee noodles on their own are fairly plain, but paired with the mushrooms they came alive -- the mushrooms in particular were a standout, really earthy and satisfying. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area and craving Malaysian food. Glad this location exists so I no longer have an excuse to skip it! read more

I visited on a Friday around 7:30 PM and expected a long wait, but we were seated fairly quickly. Parking was challenging, though, and I had to park a few blocks away. I ordered the chili pan mee, which was good and met expectations. The service was decent; staff checked in once during the meal to make sure everything was fine. Note that an 18% gratuity is already included, so additional tipping is not necessary. Overall, it was a decent experience. We stayed in Belltown for a couple of days and walked past this place a few times before finally deciding to give it a go. Man... this place absolutely delivered lol. We ordered the Nasi Lemak with beef rendang, Laksa Lemak, and the Sayap Ayam Pedas (chicken wings). The nasi lemak was so good and I really liked all the side dishes it came with. The beef rendang was perfect. Super flavorful and tender. That dish was a straight up banger. The Laksa Lemak was also amazing. That deep rich coconut curry broth was crazy flavorful. Definitely one of those dishes where you keep saying "one more bite" and next thing you know the bowl is gone lol. The chicken wings also did not miss. I'm so used to sauced wings or dry rub wings, but these had this sesame topping that just exploded with flavor when you ate it with the chicken. Super unique and addicting. Also gotta shout out Bo and Nat. My fiancée told them it was my birthday and they hooked it up with some ice cream and sang me a song lol. A little confused about some of the negative reviews. I am not super well versed in Malaysian food by any means but I have had it before and the food here tasted fine. While there was a literal flood in front of the restaurant the night we walked in (literally had to circumnavigate couple crosswalks and streets), the food to me was worth it. I got the curry laksa which was perfectly spiced and ample in serving size. Not too spicy though,until you mix in the balacan.. so you control your spice level. The prices here were quite high, there is little to no parking nearby, and the young woman working there the day I ordered food for pickup seemed aloof, indifferent if there were customers that day or not. I've had numerous colleagues rave about frequenting Kedai Makan when they lived in Seattle. Curiosity got the best of us, as my best friend and I wanted to experience eating Malaysian food for the first time! The inside is spacious and has beautiful Malaysian decor. There is an outdoor covered patio, plus a wooden booth, table seating, and a bar inside. We were one of the only customers, who were checked on and never felt rushed. The worker was so kind and friendly, we appreciated his hospitality! Being our first time having Malaysian food, we chose to order popular items. I had the Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry while my best friend had the Nasi Lemak with Tofu and Chickpea Curry. I also got an order of Roti Jala with Chickpea Curry. Oh my gosh the roti was so good, it was a new texture for me! It was light and thin like a crepe with netting holes. The curry is divine, savory, and coconut--the chickpeas were firm and plentiful but the roti couldn't support it well. The Nasi Lemak was full of new flavors--savory, rich, salty, sweet, and spicy. Loved the coconut rice and flavorful chicken curry. Everything is uniquely different but balances out. I now completely understand why Kedai Makan is highly sought out! Their Belltown spot is their newer location on 1st Ave. and a short way away from Pike Place. As much as I wanted to love this place (malaysian food is hard to come by in LA), food was salty and service did not meet expectations. The entrees were unique tho, and I will say albeit our experience, this place is worth a try as you may have a more tolerable palette. Interior design is nice. On a Saturday evening just before 9PM, there was no wait, and less than half the tables were seated. When we entered, we stood awkwardly by the "wait to be seated" sign for a few minutes before being acknowledged. After getting seated, it took awhile for us to flag someone down for our orders. I think the corner booth seating and the darker lighting probably didn't help either. Luckily we were able to find free street parking on the next block over, but we did have to drive around for a few minutes first. There was parking in the open area directly adjacent to the restaurant, but there were some sketchy peeps. Second time at this restaurant and both times were great! Our waitress, Vo, was nice and attentive. We were seated right away and she checked on us regularly. She was also made sure to double check that our meals were dairy free by bringing out a chart and showing us what our options were, which made us feel confident that our orders wouldn't have any of our allergens. We walked in on a week night and we're seated immediately unlike our experience at thei original location. We got Roti Jala w/ chickpea curry, Nasi Lemak w/ chicken curry, and Sayap Ayam Pedas. As someone who absolutely loves Asian and South Asian food, Kedai Makan had been on my list for a while - especially with all the rave reviews it gets. So when my husband and I planned a birthday trip to Seattle, he made a reservation for my special dinner here. Given the occasion, I dressed up for the night - big mistake. This is not a dressy place by any stretch. It's a very casual, no-frills setup. The interiors are extremely basic, with a modest bar area and simple furniture. There are 4-5 elevated cubicle-like seating areas (think machan-style) alongside regular tables, and apparently some additional seating upstairs, which wasn't full either. Definitely nothing to write home about in terms of ambience. We had a 7:30 PM reservation and were surprised to be told around 8:30-8:45 that they were getting ready to close. My husband had mentioned in the reservation notes that it was my birthday, and while we weren't expecting balloons and a cake, a simple gesture - maybe a small dessert or even an early acknowledgement - would've gone a long way. What we got instead was a very lukewarm "happy birthday" from our server, and that too only after it came up in conversation. The woman who took our order seemed rushed and brusque throughout, and when they came over to tell us they were closing, we were disappointed to see them seat a large group outside just 10 minutes later at 8:55. Now to the saving grace: the food. Everything we ordered was absolutely phenomenal - authentic, rich, and bursting with flavor. If you're on the hunt for genuinely great Malaysian food in Seattle, Kedai Makan delivers on the culinary front. Overall, I'd give this place 3 stars - entirely for the food. Come here for the flavors, not the service or the setting. And if it's a special occasion, maybe save this one for another time. read more

I'm not sure which is rarer for me... having an opportunity to eat Malaysian cuisine or venturing into Downtown Seattle. However, I added both to my list of recent events as I finally had a chance to try Kedai Makan. Two of us came for lunch on a Saturday around 12:30P and there were only a couple tables occupied, so we were immediately seated in one of the booths. The table was well stocked with chopsticks, forks, spoons and napkins stored in a wooden organizer. This restaurant encourages family-style dining (which totally speaks to me), so the extra utensils definitely came in handy as we shared three dishes. + ROTI JALA ($11): We started out with this side of their "net bread" served with a chickpea curry. The appearance of the bread is so impressive with its web-like pattern. It was light and airy with a very slight chew, providing a perfect canvas for dipping in the savory coconut curry. The curry was thin, but between the richness of the coconut milk, warm spices and slight sweetness, it was very flavorful. Whole chickpeas sank to the bottom of the bowl, so a spoon was necessary since they were tough to scoop up with the bread. + NASI LEMAK ($19 + $3 for beef): A substantial plate with Beef Rendang, tea egg, roasted peanuts, cucumber and sambal (chili paste) surrounding a mound of coconut rice. The menu stated this is "Malaysia's National Dish", so I couldn't resist. The beef was so tender, flavored with coconut milk and a variety of spices. Enhance it even more by topping it with a dab of the spicy sambal. I loved the tea egg which was perfectly soft boiled and had a creamy jammy center. The roasted peanuts had a slight heat and umami notes from dried anchovies on top. This was a very filling dish that can easily be shared. + SAYAP AYAM PEDAS ($18): Four huge fried chicken wings flavored with soy sauce, fish sauce and spices came topped with crumbled peanuts, scallions and sesame. They were so juicy and steaming hot, like they came right out of the fryer. The menu described the wings as being spicy, but I would personally describe them as having a balance between salty and sweet with a subtle heat. I wish the skin was crispier, but the wings were tasty overall. Make sure to pile on the crumbled toppings with each bite! The staff was pretty friendly and we received our food pretty quickly. I was impressed by the presentation of the dishes which were served on such lovely patterned plates. Just one thing to keep in mind is the automatic 20% service charge for dining in which takes the place of the tip. In fact, tips are not even accepted here. Even if you do takeout, there is a 10% service charge. For the two of us, our total bill came to about $66 ($33 each), which is not terribly high, but more than I expected to spend on lunch. read more

Visiting Seattle, Kedai Makan was at the top of my list of good food with gluten-free options. Spoiler alert: our experience was quite disappointing! I ordered the Laksa Lemak with tofu. There were way too many noodles, which soaked up all of the curry, not leaving much. They included a small bowl of chili with oil, which was dripping and left an oil stain on my favorite, brand new jeans. The other reviews regarding poor service are correct--the staff dropped off the food and then basically ignored us for the entirety of the meal. This was especially inappropriate because they automatically charge a a 20% tip. I was so excited for this place, seeing all of their vegetarian and gluten-free options. In the same vein, the carelessness of the staff made me nervous about their food safety for dietary needs. Sadly, Kedai Makan's performance significantly missed the expectations. read more

Stopped in for lunch today after seeing this highlighted by Kenji on his IG a while back. It was raining quite heavily and we were one of two tables dining in. My husband and I decided what to order and I went to the bathroom. When I came back, he was finishing ordering and I heard discussions about adding white rice. I didn't think we needed it but I figured why not. The server then asked if we weren't going to add any appetizer as I sat down. I thought she was kind of pushy trying to get us to order more, which was probably the lowest point of the experience. The food was wonderful. The ribs were so tender and literally fell off the bones, and that fried rice with anchovy was so full of flavor. We definitely did not need the extra white rice. We're visiting from out of town so we couldn't even take it home and I felt terrible about the food waste. When the check came, 20% gratuity was already included even though it was just me and my husband and they didn't even refill our carafe of water. Not my favorite. If you ever ate at the original Kedai Makan, this will not be a similar experience. The flavors are very different even though the dishes are named the same. The good news you can make reservations and have parties larger than 6, which you couldn't do at the original. Good luck finding street parking, so if you drive try using Spot Hero to locate a spot. We waited for about 10 minutes before we were acknowledged and got seated in a back booth. There are some outside seats too. They have a QR menu as well as printed ones. They no longer have the day makahni with the roti jala, which was my son's favorite. They now have a chickpea curry which tasted more Indian than Malay. The laksa was really thick and had peanut undertones, not at all what laksa is like. It was almost more like a Kai soi with coconut. And the belechan flavoring that is expected in laksa was conspicuously absent. Kid had a soda which gets one free refill but they didn't refill. The Kaya toast was served with a typical runny egg and good tasting Kaya but there was a literal slab of butter in it. It also looked like it was on potato bread which was unexpected. The nasi goreng was decent enough but even 3 stars was not super spicy. Got the prawn add ups on the nasi goreng and the laksa and the prawns were fresh and well cooked. Lychee martini was good but sweet and the passion old fashioned was pretty awful. Do not recommend. The old "healing" old fashioned from the original was one of my faves so I was pretty sad. They add an 18% service charge, no additional tipping allowed. If you never ate at the original, you will find this is better than most other Malaysian restaurants. I don't remember the name of my friends order but I know it was a Nasi dish. The ambiance is so nice. The size of the restaurant is much bigger than the Capital Hill location. (I went there first, but was at the wrong location). I would say not many people know about the. Belltown location yet because it's not super busy like the other. I'm sure in due time they will find it. I will be back to explore the menu. But I feel like the dish I got might become my favorite. We went to Kedai Makan to meet up with a friend right when they opened at 11 AM. For the first ten minutes or so, the open sign was lit, but the door was locked and there was no one we could see inside. Eventually, one of the servers came out from the back and unlocked the door. Not the best start and when we sat down, we found the overall service to only be okay throughout the meal, even though we were the only ones in the restaurant for a decent portion of time. Luckily for them, I rate based on the food rather than ambiance and service, so let's just go into that now. Roti Jala, Chickpea Curry ($11) - I've only had roti canai before, so this roti jala was certainly a huge departure from what I'm used to. It's almost like an egg crepe, kind of like a jianbing shell, but with lacy holes all over. I guess they pipe lines of batter to create this netting-like texture. The curry is the real winner here - super concentrated savory taste. I felt like the chickpeas were kind of just there - they aren't especially tender and could easily have been left out with no detriment. To be honest, I wasn't sure how to eat this. You can dip the roti in the curry, but most of it dribbles out. If you spoon curry on top, it drips through the holes, creating a mess. But everything tasted good and that's the most important part! (4/5) Nasi Lemak, Chicken Curry ($19) - The rice is the best part of this dish, exhibiting the lemak qualities that make this dish great - fragrant, sweet, coconut fatty and filling, and perfectly cooked. The egg is pretty good, with a yolk that's still a bit jammy, and the white well marinated/stewed with a brown hue on the outside. The chicken has a good curry flavor that complements the chicken flavor of the thigh. Of course, we also have the requisite sambal on the side for heat, and the roasted peanuts and anchovy mixture for texture and flavor. Some sliced cucumber rounds out the dish (4/5) Laksa Lemak, Tofu ($18) - The laksa is a thick, rich and fragrant curry broth with a slight spice but I found it to be a bit too sweet for my tastes. The broth is filled with perfectly cooked chewy noodles, julienned cucumber and bamboo, bean sprouts, and a bunch of egg strips. Lots of ingredients in this bowl - you definitely get your money's worth in ingredients. They give you a spoonful of sambal belacan so you can adjust spicy level and shrimp umami-ness to your liking. Overall it's a good laksa. (4/5) Teh Tarik ($4) - This is a pleasant drink, served hot. The sweetness level is nice, but the tea flavor is a bit too muted in the background. I'm used to more bitter and caffeinated teh tarik, ones that have an almost astringent quality barely tempered by dairy. This one, on the other hand, is a bit lighter in color from the large amount of dairy they add. We spent 1.5 hours leisurely eating and catching up and the entire time, only another two parties decided to eat in. I heard from my friend that this particular building is basically a revolving door of restaurants, with a new one opening in the space every year or two. The food at Kedai Makan is pretty good, so I do hope they survive! Note: There is an automatic 20% gratuity but they make it very clear in the menu, on a sign near the front door, and on the website. Horrible service. The waiters were playing rock, paper, scissors and giving each other back massages while customers kept waiting and trying to get their attention for water, the bill, and other simple asks. They also forgot to bring out our dessert. You're also paying a forced 18% gratuity for this. If the food was good I'd maybe give the bad service a pass, but unfortunately, like other reviews have called out, the food was mediocre and salty. The beef in the nasi lemak was bland, dry, and literally tasted like it was boiled in plain water then left out to dry before being served. The shrimp in the laksa lemak tasted similar. Like it was boiled in water separately then dumped into the soup and served. The broth was salty. I love Indonesian food and really wanted to like this place... but it was a letdown. We've eaten at the Capitol Hill location and loved it. Was surprised to come across this 2nd location in bell town. Sadly, we won't be back. Food - food was decent, we had the laksa Lemak and the roti baja. The roti was exactly the same as the Capitol Hill location. Very tasty. The laksa however was very salty. Service - this is why we won't be back. Service was horrible. We were seated right away but then waited so long before someone took our order, and he just walked up to us, not acknowledging the long wait and said "you ready to order yet?" Then we received our appetizer 10 minutes after our entree. No one ever checked in on us again. After we finished our meal we waited and waited and waited for someone before finally walking up to the bartender and asking her to ring us up. Worst part is they tacked on an extra 20% automatic gratuity. This is fine with me as long as the service is there to justify it. But we paid 20% to essentially be ignored. read more

So excited for Kedai Makan to be in Belltown. I never got the chance to try it in Cap Hill, so I jumped at the chance to go during their soft opening. The new location is pretty nice and obviously busy, I expect it will only get busier after the grand opening! We started out with the Roti Babi, which was... alright. I knew what it was stuffed with but it didn't taste too special, even when dipped in the sauce. I hear that the Roti Jala is better so I'll definitely go for that next time. We ordered the Chili Pan Mee and the Nasi Lemak (with chicken curry). The pan mee is super spicy and salty, I thought it was alright. It tasted good but was also nothing special. However, the Nasi Lemak... that was amazing. The curry was delightful and their rice is soaked in coconut milk so it's also delicious! I loved the tea egg. I'm allergic to peanuts so they took out the peanuts and made sure all other dishes were non-contaminated as well. Finally, we got the Honeycomb Cake which was also really great! I haven't had it before, the texture was so interesting. We did wait a really long time for our dessert, but our waiter actually comped it because of the wait. Great experience and great service, can't wait for them to expand their menu. read more

Love how South East Asian restaurants are coming in and bringing the entirety of their flavorful dishes in full! No more ducking out flavor by washing it down, and keeping it mild. Bring on those spoonfuls of very different flavors in each dish. The nasi lemak was wonderful mixture of everything. I love combining a little bit of everything into my spoon, and having not only the different flavors, but also the different textures in one mouthful. That sambal terasi will have a surprise pleasant kick for you at the end. Don't shrug off the vegetarian curry. The chick pea curry is a strong contender to dip things, or pour over your excess rice. It's that good. Their dishes are well priced. Good to eat solo, and also plenty to share if going in groups. Three of us shared 2 mains and 2 entrees, and we were so full. Full and happy. Service was quick and friendly. The ambiance was cute, with a mix of culture. Of course always important that the establishment was clean! No sticky self serve chopsticks here! read more
