Naturally, the second time they brought the same rolls we kindly said we had already got those. Heard wonderful things about this Kei sushi in Carson city, we drove down from Incline to try this place, made reservations for (4) all you can eat at 7:00pm, advised of a allergy to sesame seeds, was advised they could accommodate, 2- rolls were made with sesame seeds, rolls were remade, however the manager advise we must eat these mistakes or we would be charged additional 8.00 per roll and any rice uneaten would be additional 8.00. My wife tried to advise the manager of the allergy once again, and the manager over spoke and spoke louder to cover her question. I would not recommend this location to anyone looking for quality of food or quality of service staff. One star out of 5. Huge rolls and huge presentation. I've been here multiple times and this review is a few weeks old, but having gotten amazing sushi and service every time I have been, I feel a 5 star review is deserved. The miso rocks and comes out super hot with out too much seaweed. The rolls were large with plenty of sauce in the side, fresh fish and a lovely tempura. It's not to hard and over fried, while still being crunchy and fluffy golden brown crust. They also have unique ingredients and wrapped basil into the out side of the rice, which was a nice change of things to the typical sushi roll. The eel sauce is teriyaki sauce but still good none the less and the wasabi is horse radish, but I am pretty sure no where in the area has real wasabi. The ice cream at the end was rich and noted one green tea with out tasting like grass. My friend loves their chicken teriyaki and said the sauce wasn't too thick or cloyingly sweet. read more

Hard for me to find a sushi place I like since I don't eat fish! I know I know, but my family is OBSESSED with sushi and I want to be able to enjoy it with them, so I look for veggie options. Kei sushi was incredible. Not only are they polite and helpful on the phone but the food is done on time and is made almost to a T. I did take off one star because I noticed a few things that could have been done differently. #1 They compleltey mixed my veggie roll, sandwiched in the same box, in between two rolls with fish. :( I was pretty bummed about that. And then my other two veggie rolls were in the same box, making it hard to tell which was which. Also all of my rolls were supposed to come with mild sauce. There was no sauce on top and only a drip of sauce inside one of the rolls. Finally, I noticed that the rolls all had a different amount. We had some rolls with 8 pieces, some with 10 and some with 9. Didn't seem fair! Lol overall, can't wait to go back. read more

This would probably be a four star review if it wasn't for their hidden fees. That's right, hidden fees at a restaurant! Let me explain. My wife and I have been to Kei a few times and always thought it was pretty good, especially sushi chef Matt, he is great! So we went last night and had another enjoyable time. The waitress brings out our initial check and I give her my credit card. When she comes back with the credit card transaction receipts I notice something added to the check that wasn't there before: a "Non Cash Adjustment". Basically, they owner has decided to charge his customers for the credit card transaction fees that he pays. In my opinion, the cost of doing business. I don't know any other restaurant that does this, and I was never made aware of the fact that this would occur nor was I given the chance to pay in cash. The fee that is being charged is 3.75% of your total bill which, by a simple internet search, far exceeds the industry standard of 1.5-2.9%. So either the owner is getting a crap deal with his fees(which he is passing on to the customer) or he is nickel-and-diming the customer even further. I spoke to the staff and they said that they have been receiving a lot of complaints about the fee. In one employee's words, "I'll add you to the list." (of people who have complained). It was just a huge put off after an enjoyable evening and while it's only 3 or 4 bucks, it just seems underhanded and sneaky as I'm sure many people probably won't even notice the charge. We will reconsider another trip to Kei. read more

The phrase "hands down" is used a lot these days ... but Kei Sushi is HANDS DOWN in the top 3 sushi spots I've had in northern Nevada Man, they had some rolls I had never had before. My fiancée, her sister and I went there on a Friday at around 2pm and we were immediately seated at the bar. My girl started ordering and I started chewing down. I wish I could tell y'all the names of the rolls, but I'm just an eater - not an orderer the salmon was fresh, mussels were on point, service was great ... honestly loved it. This review is not so much about the sushi, as about some unexpected things that happened when we went there. The sushi was good. Rolls didn't have too much rice, fish was fresh. The issues were: 1. If you pay by credit card, a "Non-Cash Transaction Amount" is tacked on to the bill - there was nothing mentioned by either staff or that we saw written in the menu saying credit card fees were passed on to the customer. 2. There is no customer receipt of the credit card bill provided. Just one sheet you sign on. I supposed remembering the amount is up to the customer. 3. Sashimi can only be ordered as plates (6, 9 or 12 pieces). You cannot get just two pieces of hamachi sashimi, even when sitting at the sushi bar. I'm not sure we'll be back. It was a drive to the other end of town. Given they've won "Best of Carson" I suppose our hopes were too high. read more

I was very dissatisfied and perplexed. We paid for all you can eat. Which should mean you pay a flat rate & eat what you can & if you do not finish you do not get to take. But not at this place. you pay for "all you can eat" and it doesn't mean all you can eat. It means, if you don't finish and leave 6 pieces 4 on 1 roll & 2 on another. You still have to pay an extra 10 dollars. I will NEVER go back to this place or recommend this place. This is the ONLY sushi place in northern NV I have been to that has done this. Poor customer service, arrived today for a 11:15 reservation that my daughter made last evening. My daughter and I drove in separately to have a daughter father lunch. To our disappointment they did not have our reservation and did not offer accommodations for us. The young man just said sorry, apparently the hostess from the night before does not care about customer service. As a person trying to make sure small businesses stay in business and provide money to waiters and waitresses in these trying times, I am very disappointed with this establishment. I generally don't say what is on my mind, but I could tell my daughter was very upset. Of course I was able to get a reservation and have lunch at Sassafras. I would highly recommend Sassafras and I will never dine at Kei Sushi again. This is our fav sushi place as of yet and you can't beat all you can for $19.95...lunch only though. We chose it because of Yelp & friends reviews and my by, mum and I were all very happy. We got some regular rolls but they also had some super fun ones so we got a couple of dessert rolls. The place is very clean, the ambiance was fun & service was decent. Living in Reno area I think we have coined and should own the AYCE for Sushi. Should be something like France gets with their wines. I like adding Kei Sushi to the list of really good spot, and great sushi options to choose from. Even on the lunch menu. We stopped in for a work lunch, and we go to sit quick and eat till we were full. The chef was quick and we got out of there in a decent time. Unfortunately had to return to work with Sushi Coma. When I work in Carson and need a good hardy lunch, this is alway one of the places on the list. Check them out, and try some fo their exotic rolls as they make their own ideas that other Sushi places don't have. read more

We love Kei! The rolls are always amazing with everything being super fresh and very flavorful. Their baked mussels are to die for and the Tom roll is hands down always our favorite. Over the years we've tired a little of everything and have yet to eat something we haven't liked. During this pandemic they have offered some really well priced combos and we were so excited to be able to order some take out from them. We look forward to when this all is over and being able to come and sit in at the bar again. read more

Kei was fantastic when the origional owners had it. The Sushi quality is still good but that is all that remains. The Customer service experience is all but gone. You are a number not a customer and the owner is not shy about letting this be known. The servers and staff are just as bad. It is a privilege for YOU as a customer to be at Kei. I went to Kei two times in recent months. Both times I had the skinny kid as a server. Both times the kid took orders he did not get them right or left sushi the chef made sitting on the counter top for 8-10 min with half the capacity. There is no excuse. I highly recommend going to another Sushi place if quality and service are important to you. read more

If you've ever eaten at Wasabi in Minden and liked their sushi, you'll like Kei because the sushi here is made in the same fashion (highly Americanized and non-traditional) as some of the chefs are apparently Wasabi transplants. The stark, clean Japanese lines of the decor is very impressive, and the staff seems very eager and helpful. The sushi bar is very modern and attractive. Unfortunately, their website is not. After viewing their clumsy and crude site, my clients were concerned the restaurant might be just as unprofessional. Thankfully, this was not the case. Kei might want to address upscaling their site at their earliest convenience so people won't be scared away from trying their restaurant. The cost of AYCE dinner is $22 which makes this the most expensive AYCE in Carson. There are a few other Asian menu items along with sushi, such as salads, rice bowls, tempura and teriyaki platters, and seafood tacos. They also have a non-asian food children's menu (what a great idea!) I ate here with clients just a few days after it opened at the suggestion of a colleague. We arrived at the restaurant at 5:00 pm and were promptly seated at the AYCE bar. There was one family eating in the regular dining area, but everyone else was bellied up to the bar. I was a bit dismayed to see there was only one sushi chef serving a completely packed bar. That always indicates a considerable wait. And sure enough, we did have to wait quite a long time between orders. After we were nearly finished with our meal, another chef did come out, and then things moved along more quickly. I wish he'd been available earlier. I hope that only having one chef was a fluke that day; they really should have at least two chefs available during the busy lunch and dinner hours. Even though the chefs were not exceptionally speedy, they were fairly attentive, remembered orders well, and deftly proved they know what they're doing when crafting sushi. It was very beautiful, held together well, and most of it tasted fine. I really love their inspired, non-traditional sauces and ingredients. There were a few iffy rolls for me. Some contained some very old tasting fish. The tobiko was especially fishy and quite limp, which was an especial shame as nearly every roll is covered in it. I think the lack of some freshness is because Kei is brand spanking new and they have not yet had a chance to gather a large client base which helps dramatically with quick ingredient turn over and keeps everything tasting very fresh. So I'll let that pass for now. I will say that the Green Monster Roll is just completely gross and I'll never order it again. I love fresh seaweed and wakame salad but this tasted and smelled like they used something that had washed up on a beach. I could not finish eating it. So skip that roll. Also, their deep fried rolls, while very nice tasting, are drenched in sauces and are thickly battered and thus are terribly cloying and deaden the taste buds rapidly. Don't order too many or your sushi experience will be over quickly. What was spectacular was the seared scallop nigiri. It was fresh and light and cooked perfectly. It was the best scallop I've ever had in a sushi bar. Other stand out items included The Pink Lady, The Macho, The Lava, The Geisha and the Miami. As I said, the new staff was very attentive and eager. Unfortunately, this led to the waitress taking plates before people were finished with their food. This irritating habit can be remedied by asking one simple question, "Are you ready for me to take that plate?" I know I'll be returning to Kei at some point; I look forward to seeing if the freshness of their sushi has improved along with the speed and experience of their staff. I'm sure both will be addressed as this restaurant grows in popularity (which I'm sure it will.) read more

After eating here with my family tonight, I am doing something I have never done. I am writing a formal complaint letter to the owner, and attaching an invoice. With a party of 7, I understand it may be slightly overwhelming to one server as we had tonight. However, she consistently spoke to us like "I am handling my ish, so don't bother me" . The best? The overpriced bill arrives, only to include a 18% gratuity which we all felt was a little presumptuous. My mother still is waiting for the soup that was supposed to arrive with her meal. She was even charged extra for having less protein, and more veggies- which then were SO spicy she could not even enjoy, and she's not a spice wuss either. When I visit my hometown, all you can eat sushi is on the agenda several times, and this place will never be on my list of dining venues again. The main reason? Allow me: Hot tea offered upon seating: 3 dollars per person, upon receipt of the bill. Miso soup: 2 dollars per person. Tempura appetizers: 3-5 dollars per sm. serving Unagi: Not included in all you can eat, additional 5 dollars for 2 pieces. .................................................. All you can eat dinner cost: 23.95 per person. I told our waitress that their prices were comparatively much more for everything than surrounding places. Her response, verbatim: "Well, it's worth it'". All things considered, it wasn't. Overpriced. Wrong business model in a region where all you can eat is on every street. Poor quality of fish, salmon aside. The rolls are a larger size than other places, and the flavors are average at best. We did enjoy the Fuji roll, and the Macha Macha roll. It seemed that the chefs were getting sick of our orders though, as they began loading HUGE amounts of rice on with our salmon, upside down shrimp orders, and nearly everything else. Too much rice, I can probably get over. Missing a soup, okay, I understand that. But nickle and diming all of us when we are a large group, not too high maintenance, and clearly ordering a pricier menu item, left a bitter and fishy taste in my mouth. Most places offer soup, appetizers, and especially hot tea for free. If they were smart they would realize that the tea, and soup for example, help fill a guest's stomach, thus decreasing their fish expense for someone enjoying all you can eat. I done et too much. Such is the danger of AYCE - you think you need to eat as much as you can without any regard to how sick you might feel hours later. Lunch here runs about $18, and if you add soda (a rather pricey $2.75) and a generous tip, AYCE is best devoured with an empty stomach, fat wallet and no plans to eat for the next 12 hours. My chef was very nice and was attentive enough to notice when we were done and taking a breather between rolls. However, the guests next to me were extremely chatty and warranted a lot of his attention, yet he answered all of their questions with politeness while multi-tasking. We started with the miso soup, which I loved - not too salty and with fresh slices of mushrooms and tofu. I always start with any roll featuring unagi, my favorite. The long rolls were really.... long. If you don't want to overstuff yourself (ha), stick with the smaller rolls so you have room to try different varieties of cooked and uncooked sushi. No room for dessert. Ambiance was modern and very clean. I'm no sushi ninja, but this meal was delightful and exactly what we needed. read more

This is without a doubt my favorite Sushi place in the area, and I've tried just about all of them. First of all, the All You Can Eat prices and menu options are very reasonable. Most places in Reno/Carson are priced similarly, but the All You Can Eat (AYCE) menu can sometimes be small and selective. Kei has a large menu of options to choose from, including appetizers and desserts, which can also be hard to find for AYCE. But apart from the large selection, the food is tremendous. Rolls to Order: ALL OF THEM. No really, they're all pretty wonderful. But of course I do have favorites; the Tom Roll, the Fuji Mountain Roll, and the Great White. I love the collaboration of flavors that the chefs experiment with, especially with the use of lemon and cilantro. Other Things to Note: *The miso soup is fresh and has the perfect amount of saltiness (sometimes places make it too salty in my opinion). *The dessert rolls are creative and yummy. *The Ceviche Tostada is also a family favorite; it's a wonderful fusion of Asian and Mexican. *The Dragon Roll is hot, hot, hot but so, so good if you're a spicy eater. *The Nigiri is made with the perfect portions of rice and fish, and not too much of a mouth-full. I mean, the list of positives goes on and on. My family and I come here once a week, without fail. It is our Friday Cheat Night favorite. We always leave happy and full, and of course anticipating the next Friday. We have tried Kim Lee's Sushi, as well as others in the area, and like I said, we always keep coming back to this one. Simply put, Kei has great sushi! Never a worry about going here, I know I'm going to get a great meal every time. This is my favorite spot in the Reno-Carson area, and I suggest if you like sushi that you do the same. AYCE dinner is $25 which is well worth it for the quality. Sit at the bar if you can. And if your not sure what to get, talk to your chef, they are all really friendly and will help you find something to suit your taste. The only downside is that it's very popular, and therefore VERY busy at times, which makes service a little slow, but in my opinion, it's worth the wait. Found this place looking through yelp. I was going to do take-out order but saw people were sitting down inside, so I decided to dine in. Waitress was friendly and helpful. Took order right away and didn't have to wait long for food. Ordered salmon and tuna sushi. Quality of tuna was marginal. Salmon was good. Ordered edamame and Gyoza to go Portions for both were marginal I'll be looking for a another sushi place read more
