Kei was fantastic when the origional owners had it. The Sushi quality is still good but that is all that remains. The Customer service experience is all but gone. You are a number not a customer and the owner is not shy about letting this be known. The servers and staff are just as bad. It is a privilege for YOU as a customer to be at Kei. I went to Kei two times in recent months. Both times I had the skinny kid as a server. Both times the kid took orders he did not get them right or left sushi the chef made sitting on the counter top for 8-10 min with half the capacity. There is no excuse. I highly recommend going to another Sushi place if quality and service are important to you. read more

This refurbished space in an unassuming Dairy Queen/CVS strip mall offers some of the best sushi in the area. I came for the first time on Cinco De Mayo, after hearing great word of mouth , and found a tastefully done modern decor and friendly chef's. As per what you'd expect of a AYCE place, Kei has some unique and flavorful rolls, like the macho-macho, which I highly recommend if you like spicy food. Not only is there Siracha Sauce but they dice up jalapenos to accompany the tempura battered shrimp! AYCE lunch is $16.99 and comes with miso soup. I haven't explored the menu apart from the sushi but they do offer some traditional Japanese dishes for those not interested in sushi. The only knock I had on the visit was that some of the rolls fell apart. It might have something to do with the rice not being sticky enough?? But it's a minor complaint as the fish tasted exceptional and the chef's were excellent at turning around our orders efficiently and with a smile. This is definitely my new favorite sushi joint in Carson, beating out International's Cafe by a horse-length. read more

I have eaten sushi all over the country and this is one of my favorite places...and it is right here in Carson City, NV!! Atmosphere: a little more hip than your usual CC establishment Wait staff: all very friendly and i have learned over the years they are all family,so they are vested in your experience Chefs: all very good and often times will recommend some specialty items that are off menu if you feeling like experimenting. Sashimi: they do offer this, but it is hard to find on their menu. I like how they offer it in multi piece options and they give you the choice of how many pieces of what fish you want. In comparing this to other places, this is nice to order what you like. For me, (Sake = Salmon), (toro=fatty part of tuna), (hamachi = Yellowtail), (ahi=yellowfin)...some soy+wasabi and a bowl of Miso and i'm golden! Sushi: now for the real stuff and what we all love and enjoy... first off there is a latin flare to this sushi establishment, rightfully so. What I mean by that is they infuse their culture in the style of sushi. It isn't just raw fish + rice + seaweed wrappers (about my skill level of what i can make at home!) You will notice the following which you may or may not like if you are not a fan of these ingrediants: cilantro, jalapeno's, lime, lemon, mint, ocassionally nuts (great white) and other spices Note if you are a traditionalist, all of the Nigiri is pretty much as you would expect it (rice+hint of wasabi (on some)+fish) Below are some of my favorites.... the ones with "*" are recommended. Took order right away and didn't have to wait long for food. Ordered salmon and tuna sushi. Quality of tuna was marginal. Salmon was good. Rolls were made with good quality ingredients! Price was great. We ordered the raw roll of the Double Rainbow, Iris (chefs pick) ad Red Dragon Roll. Kei sushi is, in my humble opinion, the best sushi in Carson city. You can tell the chefs what you like and don't like, or if you have any food allergies. My sister in law is allergic to gluten, not only did the chef tell us that he could prepare any roll gluten free, but also told her of ingredients that they didn't have a gluten free substitute, and asked if she wanted them on the roll. We all walked out of Kei feeling very full and very satisfied, not only with our meal, but also the friendly service. I highly recommend Lei sushi! read more

The staff is great, especially Carlos and Dahlia, they are so good at making sure you have everything you need, explaining new items, recommendations and all the while doing that for 10 other customers as well! The food is by no means worth four stars. It's worth two. The all you can eat sushi is nothing but rice. It didn't even taste good. I honestly thought I was going to get sick from eating the food. My wife ordered a bento box, but she couldn't even eat it. The service was lacking. I'd definitely never go back to this place. read more

Also the manager has gotten VERY rude, she could care less if you are happy or come back! Makes you feel like a huge bother. We stopped by this restaurant on our way back from Virginia City to Lake Tahoe. They had all you can eat lunch for $19.99 and the menu was huge. Very fresh and delicious food. First time at Kei Sushi yesterday, the food was pretty good- but the service wasn't that great. About the food.... Dragon ball appetizer was out instantly, like they were premade and ready to go, we enjoyed them. Edamame was a waste, you get a little side plate with like 10 pods on edamame (for two people might I add) and it was cold because it sat in the window because there weren't enough servers. It also took over 10 minutes to get edamame- for a steamed veggie topped with a little salt, it doesn't take long and should be served piping hot. I ordered the short roll and the grasshopper, fiancé got the Lava roll and the Godzilla. I really enjoyed the grasshopper roll, loved the fried oyster and thought the roll was really tasty. The short roll was just okay, it had so much rice and nori wrap it was just really really chewy. My fiancé loved his lava roll, but we both thought the Godzilla roll was just meh. The fish was overcooked and therefore it was a very dry roll. As for the service.... We got to the restaurant around 6:30 on a Saturday night, the restaurant was pretty busy so we were excited to be seated right away. We had menus within minutes but had to wait around for 10-15 minutes before we were acknowledged again. We ordered drinks with our meals, the dragon balls were on the table before our drinks were so we are eating stuffed jalapeño bites with no drinks to soothe the burn.... After another 10 minutes edamame came out, server refilled drinks - which didn't need refilled (didn't ask, just reached over and took them)...our drinks were still 3/4 full. We didn't speak to another server or get approached until the end of the meal.... About 15-20 minutes later, our rolls came out. No worries there, we ordered rolls that had baked or fried components, it takes longer, and it was busy. Sushi chefs were busting their butts so no complaints on how long the rolls took. Our server finally came back as we were finishing up (20-30 minutes later) to offer more beverages....we didn't need any. Asked if we liked everything, which we did for the most part, and offered more sushi and/or dessert to which we declined (I wish we had known you could order half rolls to try different kinds of rolls, but now we know for next time). We were given our check and then went to go pay. We weren't told if she'd be our cashier or if we go to the front, so we just took our check to the front. We waited around for another 5-10 minutes for someone to come check us out. A man did apologize for our wait, he hadn't seen us at the counter. Would we go back? Yes, the food was pretty good, however, we won't come here when it's busy again- like a Saturday night. We thought by avoiding the main dinner hour of 5-6, it might be calming down, but a party of 7 came in right before us, you could tell that their party was the priority, having two different servers working with them constantly, while the rest of the tables were barely acknowledged by any of the servers. We were also stuck it the corner, which we don't mind- much more private and quiet, but it was like we were forgotten about as the focus was on the larger party. read more

I really enjoy this place for the food. However they are short staffed, which had this poor server running around(literally) trying to handle all the tables. The service is not the best the last couple times, but the food is extremely good. We have had most of their different varieties of sushi. I won't lie, I definitely adore that they do mor variety with dessert rolls than most places. Makes it interesting. Plus their sake selection is something I also enjoy. Finally get to try this place. It's a cute little sushi restaurant and seems like they don't really have much competition being on north side of Carson. The food is pretty good and the price is not too bad. The appetizers were great. Small lemon slice with qual egg shooters is a great idea. I can't ever go without that again anywhere I go. The rice is a bit more than what I'm used to compared to Ayce up in Tahoe. The only thing bother me is no one really come by to check on us. My tea cup kept running low on water. One of the waitresses was being very attentive to what seemed to be regulars. I get it, I do the same with my regulars but they also need to pay attention to new comers. That's how you make your new guests become your regulars as well. Food and service go hand in hand, believe it or not. Overall, not too bad and I would come back. I was glad to see that my favorite sushi place made it through the pandemic and is now thriving. I had dinner last night at the Carson City location and I have to say it's a long way off from what I know and love about Kei. The amount of rice used on nigiri was extreme and the fish was warm. Also, the presentation left a lot to be desired. I didn't recognize any of the chefs so it looks like it's a whole new staff. The service from our waitress was great and the person who took my reservation request was professional. When I go to a sushi place it's for the experience and attention to detail. This time it fell short. I will still give them my business and try the Reno location the next time I'm feeling like sushi. Hopefully that will live up to my expectations that I've come to know from Kei. read more

We ordered take out and they gave us the wrong order. We drove all the way back just to be handed our sushi that had been sitting way too long. Our cooked rolls were cold and very unappetizing. I was shocked they weren't more apologetic and appalled that they let us leave with sushi that had been sitting there because of their mistake. This is my first ever review on yelp.. I feel like this place is worth the time to take to right a review. I have been coming here for 5 plus years.. Always consistent and fresh. I have been to every local place and have Never had a better all you can eat experience. You absolutely cannot beat the value for the quality that you get! It even rivals some high end a LA carte places I have been. This comparison includes California, Hawaii and other East Coast places I have been to. We usually love kei but tonight they were terrible, it took a whole hour to get just our appetizers, then another 20 to get 2 rolls. During that time we noticed tables that came in after us getting served. Or waitress Janyse had a huge attitude whenever we asked her for something. When our rolls came the crystal shrimp in it tasted like it was done in old oil and done for too long, the rolls weren't all the way cut through, and just sloppily put together. When we asked to talk to the manager Raul, we were asked so many questions back and forth between the waitress before he eventually just had her tell us to basically leave and we didn't have to pay, SO unprofessional to not even give us the time or day. She did mention that they were short staffed but that's probably because they added more tables in the place, if they can't accommodate that many people it shouldn't be available. read more
