We were with this company for years and were signed up for their maintenance program with no issues until November of 2024. One of the newer technicians said we had a leak in our evaporator coil on one of our units. Even showed me a video of it. I had a bad feeling about this particular technician and how he behaved. Very un-Kellam. I'm glad I decided to cancel our maintenance contract. It is still cooling with no issues whatsoever. I'm glad I didn't fall for the pressure tactic. Very sad. Contacted Kellam Mechanical for a wiring problem with my air handler and furnace. Set an appointment for the next day. I was contacted by the technician, John Holdcroft, and gave him a brief synopsis of the problem. He showed up for an inspection and a quote for repairs. He was extremely professional and showed me the problem and what he needed to do to fix the problem. He had the necessary parts on his truck and did the repairs. The repairs were completed quickly and the area was cleaned up. The value was as I expected. If all of the technicians at Kellam Mechanical are as professional and expert as John there should be no where else in Virginia Beach to go for electrical repairs. read more

As a "Preferred Partner" I scheduled the free HVAC inspection/ evaluation after replacing a major component for the HVAC unit this past summer. After rearranging my schedule, the morning of service I was sent a text explaining to me I would need to reschedule because they had important customer issues that needed to be addressed. I called and rescheduled for later that same week. They gifted me one additional year of the " preferred partner" program for my inconvenience. That Friday, day of rescheduled service I rearranged my scheduled once again to accommodate the service techs. After waiting from 8am until12 noon, with no call or text I called their office well after the time window. When I explained the issue to the lady in the office her reply was " Awwww!" Now several weeks have passed and I haven't heard a word about my issue. Lesson learned, find a company that I can rely on upholding their service contracts. Job to be done: routine HVAC maintenance. I just received a SECOND cancellation from this company for a routine HVAC maintenance check. I originally called to schedule this in early May and was given an appointment for the third week of June. This was the first red flag. It usually took only a couple of weeks to get an appointment with this company. The day before I was scheduled I received a call to reschedule because there were so many emergency calls to be taken care of. I was reschleduled for today, July 9, 2025. I just received a text letting me know I needed to reschedule AGAIN. I just called and spoke to someone who has now given me an appointment for August 1st. The person was very, helpful and understanding but that does not relieve my concerns about this company. She also had my annual maintenance contract refunded and I will be given the contract at no cost. This doesn't help if they don't have anyone to respond to calls. From reading reviews and talking with her it is very obvious that, since this company was sold, it has gone completely down hill. Technicians have quit and they do not have enough techs to do meet the demand. I have reluctantly accepted the new appointment but it is pretty clear I am going to be finding a new HVAC and heating company. Got up to ac running but by late morning not so much. Called before Noon was told one customer ahead of you. It has now been over 5 hours--no response. called again was told we will pass it to the tech team. Should have called more than one HVAC company and gone with whoever got here first. We have been with this company a long time, purchased our present system from them FIVE years ago--the entire thing and have a "service contract"--which doesn't mean you still don't pay for service calls--today were told a $100 minimum. look I get that it is that time of year but seriously if you can't come let us know and we will call another company Getting pretty stuffy for us old folks one with allergies and one with asthma. read more

I have this company many years but noticed that their services quickly went down the drain! Communication is awful and a lot of good technicians moved on or work for another company. Every technician I talked to were only wit's Kellam either 3 months or 6 months. Some just finished training. A technician named Gilberto acted more like a used car salesman rather than a technician. Did not do a comprehensive maintenance but rather focused on selling me a high priced fix for an issue. Left a message to the manager a week ago but not received a return call. Never got any call back all day. At 5:16 I called back, still no help. at 6:08 I canceled with them. Too unreliable for me. We have used Kellam for almost 15 years for a variety of services. Annually, they service our Generac generator and we have trusted them implicitly. This time, however, their service man changed the battery and, in doing so, apparently damaged the generator. The status light was green when he got there and when he came up to tell us it no longer would switch on automatically, the status light was red. He said he had checked on Google and couldn't figure out how to get it back operating properly and handed us a bill for $650.00. Kellam's answer to my call for help was to send me an estimate for $1750.00 for the repair. I won't use them again and suggest you don't either. read more

It always starts with a leak - I had a leak coming from my ceiling in the first floor, just a slight drip occasionally. Kellam came out next day first thing in the morning, quickly diagnosed the issue (my dryer vent was clogged, causing condensation) and got right to work fixing it. A few weeks later, they came out for annual AC Maintenance (they offer a great membership service that in addition to other things, gives you two tune ups on your HVAC system a year), and found that my water heater was 23 years old, furnace 17 years old, and my fiberglass duct work was full of holes and mold. They gave me reasonable quotes on all of it and offered financing - I didn't use it, but nice to know they have the option - then gave me time to decide. I went ahead with all of the work, and the guys came out the day after I signed the contract. They replaced all my duct work, the water heater, and furnace in a single day! I was quite impressed with the speed and efficiency. I can feel a difference in my HVAC now - the vents are blowing much harder and the house is cooling down quicker - and my water heats up much faster now. Highly recommended - they are fast, professional, and reasonably priced. The fact that they do it all - HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing - has convinced me that I have found my go-to contractors for work. read more

I was once a loyal Kellam Mechanical customer, but that has ended. We purchased a tankless water heater 2 years ago and were told that if we had the plumbing maintenance agreement, Kellam would come out once a year to check our plumbing, including the water heater. With the water heater, they would check it out and flush the system. We had them come 2 weeks ago (they were 2 hours late) and informed us that it would cost $630 to flush the system! When questioned about this, the tech said that management changed the inclusion of the flushing and a letter was sent last summer to advise the customers. We did not receive any letter regarding this change so we were caught off guard. Then we were advise a part needed replaced (another $458) and the tech would return in 5 days. No one came - no one called. The service is good, but it is costly. They have become unreliable and are no longer the company they were two years ago. I've heard that the company was purchased and the new owners are running it into the ground. read more

Our AC stopped working after the heatwave. We had used Kellam years before a couple times so they were our first thought. Monday we called and they set up an appt for the same day. They cancelled last minute and said bc they had emergencies. Um weren't we calling for an emergency service too?? So we called back and they set us up for an appt for today (Wednesday). They cancelled again last minute this morning. What a terrible business practice. Why on earth would you schedule two appointments that you KNOW you will not make? Just be honest and say no one can come out until next week or whatever. It's hot af outside and if we knew no one was going to show up today we could've had someone else come by. I suspect they bailed on us twice bc we did not sign up for their "maintenance" plan years ago. So we were never going to be a priority. We will never call them again. I called Kellam concerning a drip/leak within the heating portion of my hvac. Two technicians came and diagnosed the problem and charged $115. They said they'd get back to me and/or I should call back in a week. I called a week later. They said my unit was not under warranty and the part was out of stock. I have called back once a week for a month now and they say a manager will call to let me know what's going on. No call yet. Now I have called requesting my diagnosis fee back. What a racket. Not sure if they don't want my business or is that how they make money by diagnosing problems and moving on to preferred jobs. I have since hired another company and they said my unit is under warranty and ordered the part and should be here in a week. Others I've called would diagnose the problem for $69 and $89. Again, Kellam charged me $115 to diagnose and then disappeared. I will never think of using Kellam again! When telling neighbors my problems with Kellam they all say yes they are way too expensive. It has been several years since and I was noticing what I believed to be the system running too often and too long. I had Kellam Mechanical replace all my duct work under my Condo Unit. There were 9 runs and after 30+ years and living off the marsh the vermin and moisture left us no choice but to replace. I went through 5 vendors for pricing. 2 came out and said they techs were too big to do the job. 3 came out and provided quotes. Kellam had by far the best customer service and pricing. My review is based on the initial consultation, which is also what prompted me to have several more consultations with different companies and deduce that Kellam makes me feel like I wasted my money and time. I was going to be spending thousands of dollars, so I really put the time in to make sure I liked the company. The tech arrived to evaluate my issues and help figure out what exactly is wrong with my AC unit. The tech wiped the label of the outdoor unit, gave me what he thought were the issues (verified different from the other companies), and threw one solution my way. For them to further look for a leak inside the home, it was going to be an extra 200+ dollars, and they did not even confirm if the leak was outside (the other companies did). Comparatively, the other companies sat down with me, took their time looking inside and outside with the same initial consultation (all included with initial price), and gave me multiple options, some of which included modern tech and a maintenence plan. Perhaps Kellam would have done great work, but to get to that point would have cost me hundreds more than other companies. I did end up settling with another company that had the basic human interaction that Kellam lacked. I really wouldn't suggest this one since I've gotten really incredible initial experiences and far more options from other companies and am very happy with the one I chose. read more

Kellam was dispatched at short notice to replace a transformer in my HVAC. The system was installed 5 years ago by Kellam, so the warranty covered the part ($25-45) but not the labor. The technician, showed up and I gave him the details. Already knowing it was likely the 24V AC transformer, I flipped the breakers off and on as he tested the transformer with a Fluke. Bad transformer. Within 30 minutes from entering the front door to walking our, he was done. Knew it would be quick as I already knew the transformer was bad and I had already taken the panels off the air handler for the tech. So I had a bit of sticker shock when he came back in from his vehicle with the invoice for the cost of $353.71. Labor of $264.71, Diagnostic of 89.00. The 180 seconds he spent confirming the transformer was bad, diagnostic charge of $89.00 I was OK with. I knew the diagnostic cost ahead of time. However, the cost of labor ($264.71) for maybe 20 minutes work, I was appalled. Essentially I paid $792.00 an hour for this easy service call. The next day I spoke with a nice lady at the Kellam office, and after a brief hold she told me that the fees are accessed by the job task, not the time spent. So, to sum up my experience...Quick response to a down HVAC which was much appreciated. Extremely inflated cost for a simple repair for a warranted system. This would likely cause me not to use their services in the future. Edit - Inspected the work that the technician did...not pleased. The transformer was mounted horizontally, with one of the two supplied screws. The other screw was laying loosely on the bottom of the cabinet next to the transformer. He probably could not reach behind the transformer to the other mounting point and thought, why bother. The way the transformer was mounted, it was laying contacting the wet insulation at the bottom of the cabinet, which would surely destroy it over time...if not create a fire hazard. Transformers typically do not like to to bathe during operation. Drilling an addition hole and mounting the transformer vertically, properly, would have been what the tech should have done. Edit - 9-23-2022 Review edited after Sarah K, Kellam Mechanical (KM) Business Manager posted response. Although it may be KM protocol to give an estimate before work is performed, I absolutely did not get one from the technician (Smitty) before repair, or I would not have been surprised by the cost. Common sense would suggest that...but thank you Sarah for implying that I lied. If I knew the cost I would have ordered the $26 transformer from Amazon, ran my portable AC unit and installed the transformer a day or two later. As I mentioned in my initial review, I called KM office the next day and was told job specific service tasks are a flat rate, not by time on job. I blame myself for not asking for an estimate, I should have known better. However, the rest of the response from KM seems to be a rationalization in support of poor workmanship, and that is unacceptable. The technician knowingly installed a transformer improperly, with one sheet metal screw and directly on a water saturated insulated surface. Yes, the bottom of an air handler does get wet sometimes...if you understand condensation and gravity. Additionally, there was a buildup of water on the bottom of the cabinet due to a dirty A coil, which was very likely the reason the transformer went bad in the first place. As a 20-year Navy electrician (retired), I knew this before I even made the call to Kellam, just had no way to immediately get the part. But the fact that KM business manager rationalized the techs actions is more appalling than the questionable work performed, or the price tag. Nonetheless, most of my remarks about Kellam were not negative. I was impressed with the response time as I wrote in my review. And despite Smitty being a friendly and experienced technician, he did a poor job installing the transformer, and he knows it. And yes, George Vote, KM operations manager did reach out to me to make it right, but I had already cleaned the A coil and remounted the transformer properly, so I had no reason to have anybody come back out. I do appreciate him offering to send out a tech and make things right. I know this is probably not the normal for KM, but every now and then when you don't do things right, own it, don't defend it. read more

I had a routine maintenance appointment for my heating and cooling system last week and the representative Gage was the gentleman that came out for my appointment. Kellam has been doing maintenance for my home for a few years now and have always done a great job but my most recent experience with Gage was Outstanding and I want to give a special shoutout for that. Let me start by saying I was hesitant about letting anyone in my home so this appointment has been put off for a couple of months. Gage called at my appointment time and advised he was running a little behind and offered to keep or reschedule the appointment. I decided to keep it since it's been put off already. When he arrived about 20 mins after we spoke, he rang my doorbell, when I answered he smile introduced himself and open a Rule#1 red floor mat on my porch and put on plastic shoe booties over his shoes than asked if he could enter my home. He had on gloves and a mask. Part of my system is in my closet in my bedroom and asked permission to go up my stairs and into my room. I could go on but you get the drift. He was polite and professional never missing a beat with advising what he was doing next and was out of my home in 20 mins. Kellam you need more technicians like Gage he was Superb! We had a issue that no one wanted to fix early this summer but Kellam Mechanical was willing and easily did. Our duct work had a huge tear in it and more than half of it needed to be replaced. We had several people come out to give us quotes and most, if not all, never called us back. I get it, it's crappy work and it's hott. We then tried to go through our home warranty company. After paying our deposit and having a company come out to stand us up on 95+ days in May, we decided to front the bill and call a well known company that we knew would have little odds of standing up us. That's when i turned to Kellam Mechanical. They came out same day to give us a quote. Chris, our technician, came out and gave us an honest and affordable quote (lets be real, duct work in the summer is not cheap nor is it easy work for these guys to do) that we couldn't refuse. We booked with Chris before he even left and decided to get the service plan as well, since we just bought the house and it's our first summer to maintenance the machine. The following week Chris was able to come out and replace the duct work for us and was even friendly to talk to. It's been about a month since we have replaced the duct work and i've purposely waited this long to write a review to see how well our electricity bill would hold up. We went from $400 to about $200 ( finally a normal bill!!!) in mid summer keeping our AC on 73!! We've never been able to do this even with 80 degree weather outside. So yes, Kellam gets 5 stars in our book and we're also really glad we got our service plan. As far as the service we had done, I'm so sorry that i forgot the gentleman that came but he was also amazing. He got our machine running great and even installed some fancy thing that shuts the machine off if it were to flood or the run off over flowed (I dont speak AC so my technical terms are probably wrong). Anywho, we are VERY happy so far with our services from them and continue to refer them to our family and friends. read more

I would give this company 0 stars if I could. One day before our home inspection in preparation for selling our house, our old water heater began leaking. My wife called Kellam (on a Thursday, not a holiday or weekend) and asked for a quote for replacing the 50 gallon direct vent water heater. They gave her a quote of $2800 to replace the old one with a comparable system. We agreed to that price. However, after arriving at the house they said we needed a special kind of water heater and the price would now be $6200. With just hours left in the work day, the home inspection coming the next day, and no time to ask another company for a quote, she agreed to it. She asked them for an itemized invoice to see the costs of parts and labor and the installation tech said a manager would provide it to us. They are now saying the managers are out of the office and they have a "one price" billing system that doesn't tell you what you're paying for. The bottom line is this company is dishonest and seems to think they can make money by taking advantage of people who don't have a lot of time to get multiple quotes. We didn't get any special product or service on this water heater to justify the 220% markup. They just knew we were stuck and took us the the cleaners. read more

My A/C went out over the Memorial Day weekend. I called Kellam Mechanical, and the very nice answering service lady took my information. Shortly afterward, a tech called. His phone wasn't very good, so I couldn't understand him and had to ask him to repeat himself several times. His annoyance was very noticeable. I asked how much it would be to come look at my A/C. He said the service call is $120, plus overtime, and then because it's a holiday, and ... I have no idea what he said after that. He was annoyed, I was clearly bothering him, and I wasn't about to pay all of that money, even on a holiday JUST for a service call. I thanked him and ended the call. I did eventually find another company whose tech came immediately and was happy to help me. I now have a maintenance agreement with that company. The following business day, I received a call from Kellam Mechanical saying they saw I had called over the weekend and offered to send someone out to look at the unit. So, the tech never even closed out the call. Friends recommended Kellam Mechanical to me. I'm very disappointed. read more

Morgan, once again saved the day! Our AC was not working yesterday evening and was going on and off periodically. Morgan called at 6:00PM and said he was on the way! Not only is he personable and easy to understand, he shows you what is wrong and what to look for. He also is great with kids!
