This isn't a place you come to on a first date, it isn't a place where I would bring my kid, and it's not a "first choice" destination. What it is, however, is a simple, relatively clean locals bar with friendly service and decent food. My flight arrived about 3 hours before my colleague's, so with time to kill, I took to Yelp to guide me somewhere closeby where I can kill time as opposed to sitting in Boston Logan. In an area surrounded by ethnic restaurants and bars, on an unassuming corner, sits KSP. The bar area, albeit somewhat small and cramped, is fully stocked and surprisingly comfortable. I initially grabbed a high-top in the bar area, but moved to the bar as soon as I noticed a seat open up. I was greeted immediately by the bartender with a glass of ice water and a menu. After perusing and knowing I didn't want to eat a lot (we were going to J P's in Westborough for their lobster rolls on our way to Worcester), I knew I definitely didn't want anything fried. Although it wasn't cheat day, the calzone caught my eye. I went for the spinach, add chicken. The bartender asked if I wanted "gahlic" too, and being a sucker for the Boston accent AND anything garlic, I gave an affirmative headshake. It only took about 15 minutes before a MASSIVE calzone was placed in front of me, cut into 4 huge pieces, on a pizza tray. After giving it a couple minutes to cool, I dug into my first piece. It was your basic calzone, full of fresh sauteed spinach, garlic, and chunks of grilled chicken. I could only muster one piece before asking for a doggie bag. If I had to kill time near the airport in the future, I don't know if I would necessarily seek this place out. It was good, but nothing memorable. read more

A very solid neighborhood pub with delicious food. Our server was attentive and sweet and the food came out fresh but super quick. We ordered the shrimp scampi pizza and the steak tips with honey BBQ sauce. The meat was cooked perfectly and it was super tender. We've heard good things from our friends about their pizza and it did not disappoint. It had less of a garlicky taste than Santarpio's but I actually liked the crust at Kelley's better. Going out for dinner while dieting usually means my choices are salad or salad. Especially when the word Pub is in the name. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of options here! Not only does Kelly Square offer a great selection of pizza and standard bar food, they also have steak tips to lamb tips to chicken to italian sausage to stuffed peppers and several other items us low carb-ers can enjoy! The first time I visited I had a stuffed pepper and a cup of chili. Both were delicious! The second time I was there I had steak tips and an italian sausage (just give me a plate full of meat). The sausage was excellent but the steak was a little overdone. Still a good flavor though and did the job. My husband has always gotten their pizza and loves it. He doesn't feel the need to try other things when he's perfectly happy with their pizza. Everyone I've encountered at Kelly Square has been extremely friendly and makes you feel like you have been going there for 20 years. And speaking of, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have. I've lived in Eastie my whole life and never knew about this place; I've driven by it but never thought to go in. My friend wanted to grab dinner and suggested we go here and since I like trying new restaurants in Eastie, I told her I was up for it. Since "discovering" this place, I've been here a couple of times because the food was that good. It's your standard pub fare, but everything I've tried has been delicious. I've ordered a lot of simple food like their burgers and pizza and have not been disappointed. The food was so tasty that I sometimes even crave their food. The service has also been pretty good the times that I've been there, the waitresses have been very attentive. We've never had to wait for a seat or wait long for our food and check. This is your neighborhood pub. Period. There is a bar area and that's where you want to sit, in the front of the place. The dining room in the back is ok, but not as much fun. There is a ton of boxing memorbilia on the wall, but now, let's talk the important stuff. THE BEST FRIES AND BURGERS EVER. Steak tips are awesome as well. So is the Buffalo Wrap. The waitresses are feisty in typcial Eastie fashion (I love them). I go here, well, uhm, maybe once every two weeks....it's just a really nice and friendly neighborhood place. I am embarrassed to admit that I went to Kelley Square Pub because of a spot I saw on the Phantom Gourmet. The pub is right down the street from my house, and it was actually recommended to me a long time ago when I was on a hunt for good local onion rings, but it wasn't until I saw the food featured on PG that I actually took the time to try it out. I went here with my girlfriend on a Friday night, around 7:30. The place was already pretty packed, but we were able to get a table right away. It didn't take long to figure out why it was so busy. It was Game 7 of the hockey Eastern Conference semifinals, and the place was full of soon-to-be-disappointed Bruins fans. There were a lot of delicious-looking items on the menu (mostly italian dishes), but we already had an idea of what we wanted. One of the deciding factors for visiting the pub was seeing a spinach and garlic pizza on their menu online. When we go out for pizza, spinach and garlic is our default, so seeing it already on a menu is usually a promising sign. So we ordered one of those and onion rings. Our waitress, Lucinda, asked us if we wanted it as a white pizza or with red sauce. I said with the sauce, since that is how we get it at most places. The onion rings were exactly what I want from onion rings. I love generic onion rings that are crunchy and greasy and perfectly designed so that the onion slides out of the breading halfway through eating it so you end up eating a hollow breading cylinder. I don't know why, I just like it, and that's the way the pub will serve them up. Plus, they gave us the perfect amount for sharing. We didn't feel stuffed or like we needed more. The pizza was excellent. We both loved it. The flavors all came out and mixed beautifully. There was only one issue, and that was that they forgot the sauce. We didn't really care, though, because it was so good. Lucinda, however, noticed it from across the room and rushed over to us. "They forgot the sauce! They were supposed to put sauce on it, I'm really sorry!" We told her it was fine, but she offered to just get a jar of sauce that we could dip the pizza into. We agreed, just to try it out. Here's the thing. We couldn't decide what we liked better. We kept eating without the sauce, then with the sauce, then without, then with... It was so good both ways, we couldn't pick one or the other. We also loved the atmosphere of the place. It was clearly a local institution, with plenty of regulars and a really laid-back feel. Plus, it was nice being in a place where everyone clearly really cared about the outcome of the hockey game. There were TVs everywhere, and even though it was awkward to watch where we were sitting, we always knew when to look because we could hear people erupt in cheers or groans. The energy in the room was great, and it made us both sad we'd forgotten our IDs at home. If I could have, I probably would have spent a lot more time there, just drinking at the bar and watching the game. I think I've finally found a good place to go and watch Sox games. I have a feeling it would be a lot of fun with this crowd. It took me a bit to decide what to rate Kelley Square Pub, but honestly, it's everything I would want from a local pub. People seem friendly and energetic, great pub-quality food, decent prices, and enough TVs and mirrors that you never have to turn your head more than a few degrees to know what's going on with the game. If Santarpio's delivered, I may never have tried Kelly's Square Pub's pizza. On lazy nights, I'd often call and the pizza would come fast, hot and tasty. It's not the best pizza on the planet, but pretty good when you want a basic pie and you don't want to wait in line to get it. Shortly before moving from the neighborhood, after faithfully ordering their pizza delivery for years, a friend of mine suggested we actually go there. It never actually occurred to me. We walked in and it looked like a regular bar and grill. Since I wasn't about to order a pizza and have it brought to me, I tried the ribs. The non-pizza food turned out to be really good. I vowed next time I'd try something Italian. I didn't get back to Kelly's again until just recently after hefting a sectional into my new apartment (naturally, since it's Boston, it wouldn't fit up the stairs easily). My moving team and I were so hungry. We weren't dressed for anywhere else, so we opted for Kelly's. Let me tell you...no hunger in the world could make total consumption of what I ordered even remotely possible. First, we had two orders of wings, one buffalo and one Teriyaki. The wings were tasty, but the Teriyaki wings could use some sort of accompanying dipping sauce (the Teriyaki had the consistancy of a dry-rub). We also got a basket of warm parker house rolls. And who doesn't enjoy the basic comfort of a parker house roll melted butter? If you say you don't, I'm sorry, but you're a freak. Everyone at my table would agree with me, so we got a second basket. I was still hungry when a mound of food came to my table consisting of a generous piece of veal parm, three very large eggplant rolatini's (which were some of the best I had) on a massive pile of homemade fusilli. I ate it for dinner that night, and my partner and I had it for dinner the following night. We were wicked full. But let me tell you, I so wanted to eat it all on that first night. It was delicious (though their sauce is a bit on the salty side). The moral of the story: Unless you have a crane lift you out of your apartment when you need to go somewhere, come to Kelly's very hungry and don't fill up on appetizers. I can't see how they ever sell a dessert, though they are available. If you can finish your plate at Kelly's, as the old Italian ladies say, "God bless you." Oh, and if you don't have an Eastie parking sticker and you need to find free parking where you won't get a ticket, again best of luck! All and all though, while it's not the best food in the neighborhood and the service isn't wonderful all the time (hence 3 stars), Kelly's is worth a try if you're a local. I like it enough to give it a visit every few months. read more

Waitress was super funny and helpful, buffalo chicken pizza was SO good, as well as the double order of marinated steak tips (literally some of the best steak tips we've ever had). Cheesy garlic bread was only okay, and the side salads are real basic, mostly just underwhelming lettuce. But everyone else was very happy with their food (calzone, meatloaf & mashed potatoes). Super reasonably priced for the big portions you get too. (we took half the pizza home and heated it up later and it was still amazing). 7 people's food, 2 cocktails and 2 beers came to $130. read more

Wandered in here the other day after hearing a lot about it. The exterior of the building is a little sketchy, but walking in changes that attitude. There are photos and memorabilia all over the place, mostly dealing with local people or celebrities that have eaten there. The waitstaff was very nice and we got seated immediately. The food was good, though the portions would be considered small compared to the amount you get at other places. Except for the chocolate cake. That was enormous. The drinks weren't too bad a price, 7.50 for a martini...however, they were not skimpy on the alcohol which was great. In a part of Boston which is way over saturated with a sea of Latin American themed restaurants this place is a gem of an island smack in the middle. They have the best and friendliest wait staff I have come across in a long time. They make you feel at home and part of their family. Every time I walk in it is like being in a Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Boston based, feel good movie. Unlike what you may think from the name, this is NOT an Irish like pub. There is not one item from Ireland on the entire menu, which is a shame because I think everyone loves a good Sheppards Pie especially in the winter. What they do have is an eclectic mix of classic bar food including burgers, sandwiches, BBQ, and pizza. I have tried items across the menu and the one stand out is their pizza. It is amazing! It is the traditional thin crust pizza you find in this region of the United States, the kind you have to fold to keep it from flopping down as you move it to your mouth. My favorite is actually one of the most simple ones, plain cheese or pepperoni and cheese, although they are all very good. Another very good dish to try is their BBQ steak tip sub. Overall, except for the pizza which is great, the food is average. You know what to expect when you order and it always hits the spot. If you are in East Boston and need a break from Latin Food, Kelly's is a nice alternative with great service. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I've been going here since I was a little kid, when the original location was across from central square. They have old school decor on the walls like the fight poster of Tyson and Hollyfield. Classic. The clam chowder is better than legal seafoods and the Steak and frites is mind blowing. Another thing they do well is the house salad dressing - simple but yet so tasty. We were recommended to Kelly's while waiting for a table at Rino's Place. It's a couple blocks down, but definitely worth the short hike!! We decided to walk down to grab a quick pre-dinner drink, and were slightly intimidated when we walked in. It was obviously a very locals-centered, neighborhood bar. Since we weren't eating dinner, we had to sit at the bar (where everyone who was eating was sitting anyway!!) and tried to find a seat. After a couple minutes confusion, a very nice man who was sitting alone at the a table offered to get up to let us (a party of four) sit. We sat down, and instead of having to order at the bar, or have a waitress serve, the bartender came right over to take our drink order. He pretended to be offended when I inadvertently showed doubts to the availability of a large selection of red wines (he had 6-7) and served me a very nice cabernet. He told us to "shout for him if we needed, but no guarantees he'd answer" (haha!) They had a football game AND baseball game on, so the men were happy, while we got to watch the colorful locals-including one gentleman by the name of "Johnny Quarters" who tried to get a lady in a FBI costume (it's Halloween!) to "arrest" him for being a litterbug (he was throwing napkins on the floor!) We had a great time, and the best surprise came when we closed out. A Sam Adams, 2 glasses red wine, and 2 bottles of Bud tallied to $21. Amazing! read more

Yum! Someone recommended this place to me since it was one of the places that delivers to our hotel. I'll be ordering from here every chance I get from now on. I ordered the Italian Sweet Sausage.. and yes.. it IS charbroiled to perfection. It's not greasy at all and it has so much flavor. It comes with a salad, and fries or a baked potato. I ordered it with a baked potato and got honey mustard dressing for my salad. The baked potato came with sour cream on the side. Everything was delicious! I forgot to order it with cherry peppers on the side so don't be a dummy like me and remember to ask for them! I also ordered the Stuffed Pepper. I always order way more food than I should when I'm by myself. The stuffed pepper was much bigger than I thought it would be. I loved the rice and the meat inside.. and the sauce was sooooo good with the bread they also give you. I got all this for around $13. What a steal!! The delivery guy was really nice and friendly. Usually delivery guys just come up and ask you to sign or tell you how much you owe but he actually took the time to ask me how I was doing and commented on how I should go outside since it was so beautiful. I was at the airport picking up a friend and was looking for a place close by to eat. Searched Yelp and came across Kelley Square Pub. I was not disappointed. I had the steak tips and italian sausage with steak fries. My friend had a sausage, pepper & onion sandwich. The italian sausage was homemade, the tips juicy and all grilled to perfection. The steak fries were cooked perfectly. Since we were on a roll we ordered desserts - mini cannolis and tiramisu. Cannolis were delish! I'm not a fan of tiramisu because the flavor of the espresso is always so strong. This was not like that, perfection! The piece was so large we took the leftovers home! I work nearby and this is the one place that has delivered time and time again. There isn't a single person who has ordered from here and complained about anything. Pizza, subs, salads, burgers, all the appetizers, ITS ALL GOOD! Usually the people I work with are stuck with ordering Nicks or Great Chef or rolling the dice with Woody's, but Kelley's is a blessing! My favorite meals so far: The Homemade Meatball Sub, which had 6 meatballs in it! That's right 6! All sandwiches come with steak fries, so bonus points for that. The Crab Rangoon are the best Crab Rangoon I've ever had- it's filled with actually Crab! Imagine that! I've had about every appetizer and I don't know if I'll find one that I don't like. Everyone I work with, I tell them if they're going to order food, we should order from Kelley's. Damn! Didn't expect this one. Went to a party in Quincy last night that featured three large pizzas from this place paired with some of the most expensive, rare beers in the world. Talk about a clash of cultures. Anyways, I tried the slices and they were really good. I'd rate it as some of the best thin-crust bar pizza in the city. Very nice dough and the toppings were great. The hot peppers were actually hot and they didn't skimp on any of the ingredients. Haven't had a chance to visit the actual bar yet, but it's on my hit-list now. If you find yourself in East Boston and you aren't betting on a fight in a Maverick Sq liquor store between a dog and a raccoon (this actually happened) then waltz on over to Kelley Square Pub and tell 'em I sent ya. The staff is friendly and conversational and the food is straightforward and well prepared. Judy the bar tender is an absolute delight and makes you feel at home among the local crowd of regulars. I had the buffalo wings and a Sam Adams Octoberfest because the Pabst was sold out. The wings were cooked like I like them and the beer was frosty cold. Last Saturday I asked about the special: grilled chicken tortellini in alfredo sauce. My server said, "It's pretty big, but I think you'll like it." And it was completely full, just under an inch from the top edge. Full to the brim with chunks of chicken and tricolor tortellini and broccoli smothered in alfredo that no doubt contained the equivalent of my entire month of calories within its creamy, steaming, mouthwatering OCEAN of sauce. I know you don't believe me. Just go. If you can finish that Mount St. Helen's VAT of food and still waddle out the door without getting sick on the sidewalk, let me know. I myself felt completely guilty about eating for 20 minutes and not even seeing a dent in the first layer. Then I realized I could supply my friend with dinner for her and her two teenagers.
