The quality of the glasses don't last past 10 months and the eye contacts are very irritable. I have gotten glasses often from them and they always end up wearing down. The contacts I spent 300 dollars on never worked out well. I had high hopes for this optometrist. She's local and took my mom's insurance...I thought. Unfortunately, if you asked a question she felt you were questioning her personally, her character, and her practice. I had to keep reminding her that I was just asking questions to better support my 80 year old mom and to better explain the costs she was sharing. I don't know whether it was the time and effort needed. She replied more than once she should leave and find someone else. It was not a good experience for my poor momma. This is the first time that I've ever taken the time to write a negative review. I am just stating my experience over the phone with her while my mom was there. My mom unfortunately felt demeaned and disrespected. I'm only sharing my experience with supporting an older parent and I would urge folks to be catious. Maybe she's great with younger folks. I have been with Dr Lao since end of 2016/early 2017. My family has very strong medical history of glaucoma and I picked Dr Lao specifically because of her expertise in this area. I am very particular about this, and I given I had just moved to the country, I knew what I was looking for. From the first visit until today (2024), I can stand by Dr Lao's professionalism and experience as my eye doctor. She is by far the best eye doctor I've had who works with integrity and ethics. She does not use patient-doctor relationship for her business benefit nor for once attempt to convince me to spend more than I should. I have since recommended friends and even bring my mother (who was visiting) to get glaucoma tests, eye test, prescription, etc. Everyone that I recommended has since stayed on with Dr Lao with no issue. Granted, you wont get any fancy branded frames here. Practical, quality, and precision. I wear prescription glasses and contact lens most of my life. So i know when a doctor has experience to get it right the first time. Pretty disappointed to see other reviews on Google. Thought I'll share my experience. Also worth mentioning, all the staff who works/worked with Dr Lao are amazing -- you can't work for a bad boss. read more

Great experience from start to finish getting my boys eyes checked and ordering them the cutest glasses. My twins loved it

Kind, knowledgeable, Covid-safe, and trans-friendly. I have been going to Dr. Lao for about 3 years and have always had a good experience. She is kind and approachable. I always feel that she is sincere when she asks if I have concerns and listens carefully if I do. She has been consistently safety conscious during Covid: always masked and has a HEPA filter running. She patiently spends extra time with me when I'm having trouble picking my new frames, plus adjusting them when I come in to pick them up. Because of this I find she is usually running about 15 minutes behind, but I don't mind because it's worth the extra level of consideration. The trans-friendly part: Cannot stress enough how good they were about this. Recently I came out as trans but have yet to change my legal name. Last year, I'd noticed they'd added a preferred name option during check in. Before this visit, I called ahead to ask them to add my preferred name. I also asked them to add notes about my pronouns changing (since there wasn't a pronoun field). The receptionist immediately understood what I was asking and completed my request like it was no big deal - not as common as you might think. The receptionist was respectful both over the phone and when I came in in person, immediately finding my appointment by my preferred name (no having to do the dance of, "well, I might be under this name..."). Dr. Lao consistently addressed me by my new name during the entire visit. When she printed out my prescription and saw their program had printed my legal name at the top of the page in the same size font as my preferred name, she actually apologized to me! This might not sound like a big deal if you aren't trans but this was HUGE for me. A whole level above the care and consideration I usually get from doctors' offices. I am so glad I can continue to see her and feel comfortable doing so because she is a great optometrist. read more

My apologies for having to give 3 stars because Dr Lao is one of the kindest optometrists. But her admin assistant is one of the rudest admins I've ever dealt with. It's true that Dr. Lao is honest and helpful throughout your appointments. But you should be concerned with the admin. 3 issues I ran into: The first time around, her admin set me up for an appointment on a Thursday, she was all mumbly on the phone and I had to double confirm with her during that call. Only to find that Dr Lao was not in till the day afterwards. I had to call out of work early for her admin's mistake, it was incredibly annoying! Her admin wasn't even all that apologetic, she gives off a vibe as if it wasn't her problem. The second and third issue happened all at once. I normally pay everything all up front and always check with the front desk to see if anything was owed. Apparently I previously owed for the time I had to pick up my glasses. Dr Lao, the admin, and I talked it out and I ended up paying. When asked "Did you get an invoice?" I said out of honesty "I'm not even sure if I ever get invoices." (I wasn't angry saying that or anything, I just didn't know). But what bothered me is that the admin had the nerve to laugh at me about that with the response of "Yeah, we wouldn't not give you an invoice." Then she just turns around to acknowledge her paperwork like I didn't exist. It was all incredibly rude! I get mistakes happen, but don't make the error of you not charging me FOR A YEAR be the reason you can laugh at me about it and be a jerk. I tried calling Dr Lao just now in hopes of offering discreet feedback, but the admin picked up. I asked, "Is Dr Lao still in?" Her admin said "yes" and I thought in my head okay cool. Then I ask, "may I please speak with her?" And the admin gives off another rude tone and says "She's with another patient." I'm not psychic, she should have mentioned that almost immediately when I asked if she was in. Dr Lao did nothing wrong, but an admin is at the front lines of every doctor's work. I have to leave a 3 star review due to this because I just can't deal with her admin anymore, but if Dr Lao reaches out to me, I would happily change it for her. TL:DR Dr Lao is helpful and kind but her admin will lack respect for you or be completely unorganized, which could result in you paying a bill that should have been settled years or months ago. read more

After years of dealing with Dr. Holbert's mall offices and then trying Kaiser, we decided to try Dr. Lao because we wanted a more personal approach. My wife and I trusted her to go through all the assessments and followed her recommendations. The resulting prescriptions, as well as the quality of the lenses, were far superior to our previous experiences. She is also kind, funny, and very informative about vision issues, providing significantly more time to us than we had ever experienced with other providers. Dr. Lao runs a one doctor operation but has all of the necessary equipment and resources the bigger places have. Went to see Dr. Lao for my first ever optometry appointment. The process was quick and painless - turns out I am slightly nearsighted. Dr. Lao helped me pick out glasses that fit my small-framed face and I received them in about a week and a half. Vistied Dr. Lao Office on 11/18 for a 10:15 am appointment time. Arrived 15 min early and was greeted and made aware that the Doctor was running a little behind. 50 min after my schedule time I was seen. Dr. Lao did apologies for the wait and I appreciated her saying so. I found her to be very warm and caring. My visit was for contact and eyeglass prescription. My coverage is limited so I had a out of pocket charge for the contact prescription witch was no problem for me. What was a problem was the doctor didn't provide a complete examination and I paid full price for the exam. I Returned a week later for a follow-up to see if the contact were going to workout for me. My appointment time was 10:45 am. I arrived 5 min before and was seen 15 min after my schedule time. During my visit I inquired about glasses, I picked a pair that did not have a price attached and she could not recall the price so she called the buyer. After her call she notified me that I had picked an expensive pair of glasses, the cost would be $330. I said that's more than my budget would allow. What she didn't know was I was near enough to hear the conversation with the buyer and I also on my prior visit had asked her assistant/receptionist. The cost of the glass was $130. I'm not sure why she exaggerated the price but leaving I felt like my buisness was not wanted nor going to be missed. Thanksgiving was two days away and she didn't even wish me a happy one, I wished her one though and expanded the wish towards the Holidays in general in return Dr. Lao's reply felt forced and empty. This is a small practice where Dr. Lao will attend to you the whole time instead of having an army of staff to do the tests. The bills are also significantly lower than what i've gotten at other practices for the same service. read more

I would highly recommend Dr. Kelly Lao. She offers a very thorough exam and she spends a lot of time with her patients answering questions. She does the pre-testings and screening herself and is a very knowledgeable doctor. I was referred to her by a couple of friends. I did not feel rushed with Dr. Lao. I went to Dr. Lao for my annual eye exam and to see if I might be a candidate for contact lenses. I have an acute astigmatism and had tried hard lenses but could not adjust to them, so I was quite nervous about it. Dr. Lao gave my eyes a thorough exam and explained in detail the advances in contacts for folks like myself. Her friendly, relaxed and professional manner set me at ease and in a couple of weeks, I had the trial pair. They were perfect but since I am middle aged my near vision was not quite corrected. She did a couple of tests and suggested that I get a slight "add" to my non-dominant eye. I agreed and when I got the lenses and put them in I could see great. My distant and mid vistion is 20-20, and with the slight add, I only need readers for reading paper back books and sometimes the newspaper if the print is smaller. I would recommend Dr. Lao to anyone, whether you want contacts or not. Shs is simply the best. Thanks! read more
