This review is not about taste but about honesty and efficiency. Kelly's Saugus. waited 13 minutes in Drive thru with no cars ahead for someone to take my money. Roast beef sandwich was sitting on counter getting cold. I asked for a new one that was hot since cold beef is unhealthy. Was told it was switched out. It wasn't. Sandwich was cold. Gone so downhill. Ordered the Surf and Turf for about $34. Asked for medium rare, shaved roast beef. It was cooked more than well done, and the mini lobster roll had a layer of lobster meat. If you squeezed the roll, you could have sealed it up completely. I asked for all rings instead of rings and fries, and the portion of rings was what it would have been if the fries were next to them. They used to fill the lobster roll and replace the fries with more rings. I'm being generous with my 3 stars because I'm a nice guy, and the service was very good. Kelly's Roast Beef in Revere just isn't what it used to be. The chili was watered down, the fried haddock sandwich was soggy, and the only thing that was halfway decent was the cheeseburger. I waited about 50 minutes for my chicken tenders in an almost empty restaurant, and nobody -- not even the manager -- said a word about it. I travel back to Boston monthly and would typically go 1-2 times each trip. After reading reviews hearing friends and family complaints and driving by 4x this week never seeing more than 3 people at counter I decided I'm not going to risk it. I love this place but order ahead or the wait for your food can be pretty long, and its hard to find parking. Food is always the same, good food, I know what to expect. Its a to go place, unless you wanna eat in the few chairs they have outside or the beach. I always go occasionally if im home and passing by. Went to Kelly's Roast beef in Medford and I ordered our usual 2 large roast beef sandwiches rare/shaved a small onion ring and the fried shrimp that I love(loved).I went through the drive-thru so didn't look at my order till I got home.right away I noticed different containers not the nice plastic ones anymore but the recycled cardboard ok no biggie they're going green. But when I opened the fried shrimp I was kinda shocked,I see these small tail on shrimp with like a panko breadcrumb and I was like what the f$&@ are these, there not the large butterfly shrimp that I've ordered for the past 40 yrs(I'm 61) I've been eating food from Kelly's since I was a kid and my parents took me to the original one on Revere beach but I didn't start ordering the shrimp,Clams and lobster rolls till I got older and paid for them myself. Needless to say I'm very disappointed because even the onion rings seemed different. So that makes me wonder what else has been changed. To the new owners your making a mistake because people notice and your going to lose business Kelly's is a Massachusetts icon known for good food and we veteran customers will pay a few bucks more to get the quality that it always was.I'll try it again in a month or two and if I'm disappointed again I never thought I'd say this but I will be done with Kelly's and that really saddens me. read more

I was standing in line with a few other customers and all I heard was grumbling about quality and price. I foolishly ignored them. I have been going to Kellys Revere Beach for over 50 years. Not sure if I have the right words to explain what was going on here. First off I noticed the prices are not posted anymore and you have to ask for a menu. My usual was always a fish and shrimp combo for around the mid $20's. It is now called a seafood platter for $33.50. It was a plate of horror. The fish was just a block of pre frozen block of off smelling, not sure what it used to be. The shrimp was not any better. I wanted a second opinion so I offered some to my dog. Never going again, used to go constantly but haven't been on the North Shore during the winter, went to the Danvers location today, ordered a medium fry to share with my dogs, was told now they had only small and large, so ordered the 9.95 large and a sandwich to go. They don't prepare it to go, shove it out on a tray. The large fry is smaller than the medium fry used to be when they sold a medium size fry order and the fries are some crunchy coated mess rather than what they used to serve. Twenty three bucks for a sandwich and fry and the food stunk. People at the next table were telling the server they'd never come back, very few people inside at noon lunch hour, evidently this must be common and word has gotten around. read more

I'm so disappointed that I'm posting this everywhere. They have lost their way and my friends and family as customers. Friday night in Saugus. I've been coming to Kelly's since the 90s and it's been a regular stop whenever I'm going to Logan or a game in Boston. In that time I've brought numerous customers, family members and friends here to enjoy what I considered the best roast beef sandwich and fries in the country. Well that was then and the fact is now they have lost their way pushing quality aside for profit. It took me 3 visits to write this review thinking it was just a bad visit but today convinced me otherwise. I stopped with two other friends who I've brought in the past, our shared experience of how far they have fallen matched up. Starting with fries. They were once plump, large, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The appeared fresh cut and many had the potato skin to show their freshness and were delicious. Kelly's has moved to coated fries similar to burger kings that have no resemblance to quality and certainly no flavor. They for lack of a better term suck. All three of us ate just a few and left the rest. Strike one Next what put them on the map, the roast beef sandwich. Well even that has gone through some changes and not in the good way. The meat no longer has that unique Kelly's flavor and was relatively bland while appearing under roasted when compared to past visits. The sauce no longer had the familiar tang the three of us remember but instead tasted more like it was being extended with fillers. The buns once toasted came raw which allowed the sauce to quickly make them soggy. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich just not a Kelley's quality product. After three tries I'm throwing in the towel and going to look elsewhere for a great roast beef sandwich. It was a good run but a familiar outcome when a business forgets how it got there as it expands. Hope they figure it out before the other regulars move on. read more

I like the food here. I was very impressed with the variety of options of seafood, chicken and beef. I went with the obvious choice (roast beef) and onion rings and fries. The bread on the roast beef sandwich is very well toasted. It's was soooo good. The roast beef is real meat. The barbecue sauce is like Arby's but way better. The fries and onion rings are quite good. The restaurant has been a big part of the community for decades. It's not super fancy, but the food is good and the service was friendly. You can order at the drive through if you wanted to. Definitely worth a try. I think I would like to come back and try a couple of other menu options at some point. read more

What a tremendous disappointment. We ordered a scallop plate with onion rings. It was so greasy. It was like it was taken from the fryer and put in a plastic to go box. No attempt to shake off the excess or put it on a paper plate to rid off the excess like most seafood restaurants do. Still, the price is a little high, but the quality is definitely there and may take a little long for your order, but they cook each order individual also now they have different kinds of milkshakes that are pretty interesting. Went to Kelly's Roast Beef May 31,2025. FYI, a private equity firm bought them January 2025. The lobster roll was expensive and not good. Small salty pieces of lobster that didn't taste great. I came here a lot as a kid, and still come here as often as I can as a 22 year old who lives in Florida! My family loves Kelly's Roast Beef. It is seriously such a timeless place. You can't go wrong with whatever you order, being a picky eater, I get the classic turkey club and am always left extremely satisfied. This Kelly's is a great place to get food, especially over the summer, where you can sit at the beach or at the outdoor picnic tables that have an ocean view. Been here many times! Food is delicious and fresh! Staff is usually friendly! Service is a little slow however during the busy months.

I remember the Good Old Days of Kelley's (as recently as last year) when clams were fresh, onion rings were not onion 'strings', and the plate was not supplemented with lots of cheap potato fries. Those days are now gone, along with any fresh taste. I know frozen food, and I believe their clams come out of a frozen can nowadays. Small and dry, that's what you get. Take it or leave it, and I'll leave it. I've been a customer since 1956 as a kid, and won't be going back again. This is what we get when a 'management company' takes control. Did you notice they don't post 'clam plate' on their billboard menu? Did you notice they don't post prices on their billboard menu? Did you notice there are no lines waiting to order or pickup their order, and that on a clear Sunday afternoon? Over $40 for a clam plate and drink, for about $8 worth of food. My beautiful wife and I were in the Boston area for a long weekend from Texas. I saw a post about Kelly's roast beef sandwiches and had to make a special trip to try for myself. We drove 45 minutes out of the way to give it a shot. Didn't matter that there wasn't indoor seating since there were park benches at the beach. So I ordered a Large Roast Beef "Three Way". Which includes James River BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and a slice of Land O'Lakes White cheese. Didn't take long for them to make it. We sat down and opened up the bag and I was in awe at how great it looked. Then I sunk my teeth into the first bite. That Roast Beef was very fresh and was the biggest factor in the quality and taste. Then they sauce kicked in and WOW! Make sure you have plenty of napkins. When you have a sandwich that is this messy...you know it's gonna be good. Even the bun was nicely toasted and not too thick. We will come back fro sure when we return! read more

Everytime I come into Boston, I think about coming here because its a local favorite that people tell me about. Everytime I come here, I wonder why I decided to give this place another shot. The place is convenient with ample parking and the interior space has a lot of seating including comfortable bench seating. The bathrooms are clean and excellently maintained. The problem is the food, the food is mediocre at BEST and is actually kind of bad. Not bad in the sense that itll make you sick, its just that you can get significantly better food elsewhere for the same price. I ordered the Surf and Turf with mixed onion rings and fries and also the fried scallops and calms so that I could try as much as possible on the menu. 1. Roast Beef - theyll ask you how you want it and the classic is the roast beef with cheese and bbq sauce. The bread is soft, the roast beef tastes better than other chain roast beef sandwiches however the cheese is never melted and stays hard and the sandwich has no taste. The meat has NO seasoning, not even salt! Somehow even the BBQ sauce on it has no salt. I mean if you're on a heart healthy diet, the no salt maybe for you but its not great. Its a shame because unlike other reviews, I think that this roast beef has good texture but it just has no flavor whatsoever. 2. Lobster Roll - just don't bother. This was the worst lobster roll in Boston for me. This tastes like a lobster roll youd pick up in a supermarket. They give you a fair amount of meat in it but Im not sure its all lobster meat. The meat is also underseasoned and I tasted more celery than anything else because of the lack of seasoning. 3. Fried Scallops - surprisingly large scallops fried in a batter. The batter was not well done and the water in the scallop made the breading fall off the scallop. The scallops were all underseasoned and like the rest of the food was not salted. I will say that the scallops themselves were alright and were big but the breading failed and it had no salt. 4. Fried Clams - the breading used on the clams were different than the scallops and it did not fall off. the breading was thinner and was really bonded to the calms. The clams however were very small and tasted like any frozen clams you might buy. However like all the rest of the fried food, it had no salt and tasted like mild clam and oil. 5. French Fries - well fried, no seasoning, I cannot recommend. 6. Onion Rings - well fried, with batter similar to the ones on the scallops but the batter did not fail and stayed on the onion ring. the onion rings are not chunky pieces of onion and was minced onion made into a ring and then breaded. Similar to the other fried foods, there was no salt and was was not great. Note that there was salt on the side counter on top of the garbage cans however when you do no salt throughout the cooking process, you cannot just add salt at the end without changing the texture and flavor, making the food worse. If you are interested in trying out a Boston classic, maybe just buy the roast beef, and taking a bite and going elsewhere. I cannot recommend a meal here. read more

I asked them to shave the roast beef as it comes as slices now. I ordered the sandwich and a drink for 16.00. The roast beef was half shaved and WELL DONE. Im only eating it because it was so pricey. We have been going to Kelly's for close to 40 yrs. and we have never ever been disappointed. The last three take out visits have been extremely disappointing. In the first, we received cheeseburgers instead of roast beef. Our fault for not checking before we left We tried eating the burgers but they were so thin and tasteless we threw them out. We thought it was an off night. Second take out visit, the Greek salad looked half eaten & chowder and roast beef didn't taste the same. Third and last take out visit, the chowder indeed is a different recipe and the salad is 1/2 the size with a ridiculous price for a lot of lettuce some cucumber and green peppers sprinkled in. This is not a sit down restaurant but rather a place where you order at the window and wait for your meal. Nice place to stop for some delicious food while visiting Revere Beach. They of course are famous for their roast beef sandwiches however when I went there I had a craving for seafood so I went with the fried shrimp. The shrimp was very good and it really hit the spot. Came here during the week for lunch one day before the summer ended. The service was slow to place the order but the wait for the food was not too long. The initial person I ordered from didn't know too much about the menu, but there was an African American older male & female who explained the menu in a little more depth. Please be AWARE if you eat outside that the birds are absolutely ruthless! They will steal your food with no regard whatsoever Calamari 5/10 Great batter & perfectly fried but completely lacked flavor. Clam (they didn't have clam strips) & shrimp combo plate 5/10 Again, good batter and fried but there is no seasoning on any of the food. No amount of salt, pepper tartar sauce, nor hot sauce can save the flavor. It's just very bland. Bacon cheese fries 7/10 These were good but I had to get more cheese as the fries underneath were completely dry.
