I have to say I was disappointed by the fish & chips I got at Kellys. The fish wasn't soft and buttery as I expected, and the onion rings came in batter so thick you had to chew through them. So it has been12years since I''ve been to Kelly's, and I am glad to say it is still as good today. I got the famous clam roll. WONDERFUL. The fries were great and the onion rings were crunchy just the way a good selfrespecting onion ring should be. The star of course is the whole belly clam. There are not enough words.NO SAND, the batter stands up but it does not overpower the flavor of the clam. They serve it on a toasted hot dog bun,which is unnecessary, but you need a roll when your selling a clam roll. The bun is toasted in butter and tastes great when your done with the clams. I'm not sure how it's possible to mix up "Shrimp Plate" & "Roast beef sandwich with a lobster roll" -- but they did it. And then didn't have the common decency to look me in my face to apologize, and instead just said "your done". Management is trash. I always make it a point to visit Kelly s whenever I am in town. Today was no different, beautiful day off we go only to be disappointed. Roast beef was more than mooing , fries were cold and soggy, roll over toasted and stale. My son ordered a clam plate and got calamari instead! He never complains but it was awful! I don't understand what is going on, this is the off season! Just a handful of people ordering. I'm another long-time local, and I have to agree, Kelly's is not what it used to be. Once they franchised, the quality dropped. It's still a nice place to grab some fries to throw at the seagulls, and it can't be beat for a late-night pit stop, but it's not the place that used to be famous world wide. read more

One star! The food was cold because we had to wait for the frape. Onion rings were crap! Clams were decent, at least they are full clams. The roast beef was tasteless with out any condiments, I had to add ketchup to make it edible. The lobster roll was okay. Really the only good thing was the coffee frape. We paid $38 for crappy food. Fraud Alert!!! A new kind of pink slime? I've been going to Kelly's since I was 3 yrs old. They always have excellent roast beef sandwiches. Lately, I have been getting their lobster roll. I noticed that there are a few big pieces of claw meat on top and throughout. But about a1/3 of the "lobster" is some skinny pink things that are the color of lobster, but not lobster. I grew up eating here, and I was superseded when my boyfriend said the food here was horrible. I have lived in Revere for months and he would never want to go. Till one day I managed to persuade him. Was in town visiting colleges with my son. It was recommended that we try the calamari. My son ordered the calamari. I am not a fan of fried foods but had to try the scallops. Instead of fries I asked for a side salad. When we got back to our hotel to discover my salad was missing. I called the restaurant and they were very apologetic and said I can return to pick up my salad. I was hesitant and started eating. My scallops were so delicious but I needed my salad. When I got back to the restaurant to pick up my salad, they were so apologetic and had my entire order waiting for me. Outstanding customer service! Kelly's to me will always be the place where I used to hang out when I was too young to do a whole lot. I remember driving there when all my girlfriends and I got our license. It seemed SO far away back than. It seemed so risky to make the drive. But in reality we were really only trekking from Waltham to Revere. Sure we hung out there, drove by there, would buy a fountain soda there, would stand near the lines of people if their were cute boys or would chill on the beach (NEVER IN THE WATER, HELLO!?)..........but alas we never really ate anything from Kelly's. You know. What girl wants to be singled out of a crowd with a ton of boys around eating one of their huge Roast Beefs???? Not me. Not any of them. Not than. No way. Boy were we stupid. So fast forward "X" number of years (ahem) and we every once in a while, will make the drive to Kellys....still only 20 minutes (I live in Cambridge)....... Still a ton of teenagers around and groups of kids just sitting around and being, well kids. There is also a lot of older people walking around I noticed. They are geared up in their jogging suits hitting the pavement.....Be careful of the seagulls, they will do all but grab the sandwich out of your mouth. Walking down the main drag you will see a few ladies aka Magda from "There's Something about Mary" in their yards on lawn chair with the big sun reflector held under the chin ...hey they want to maximize their tan! There is also a TON of little kids around. Running around. Even worst in the summer....but seriously, I feel they are everywhere.......crying, falling, throwing fries at each other ......pulling at their kids harness! Running through the crowds in the water walking shoes and floaties and stopping short screaming for their parents because "They have to go!"...Huh...... You will also probably get hit on by a guy that wears sunglasses no matter day or night and has on the Whitest sneakers you will ever see, and will say "How uuuuuuu doin?" No lie...happens every time LOL.... All that aside, the RoasBeef Sandwich is alway a hit...never a miss.....The bread is the best part.buttered and lightly toasted to perfection.........their clam chowda is awesome......not too saltly, not too clammy, not too creamy..(Did I say that?)..just right.....And the lobster roll.......TO DIE FOR......I usually don't like anything based in MAYO, but this lobster roll is so yummy, so buttery, so perfect....it is worth the 20 minute drive to sit with the boy crazy teens, the track suit wearing elderly, the little kids trying to wiggle out of their harnesses, getting hit with a death ray from a "Magda" like lady's sun reflector while she is getting her tan, on the monster seagulls and the millions of "Joey's" hittin on the non locals........... Yes, there is one right down the street from me with booths and a long line the size of the Tobin bridge but it isn't the same....Nope. It is not the same as the Kelly's at Revere Beach. Oh if you are bringing fiddo: make note of when they can and can not be on the beach, there is food everywhere on the ground, the cars dont always stop when you cross the main drag and the crowds of people that you sometime have to maneuver through just may be too much for them. The hubby and I went to grab some lunch before the sand castle action and sat on the beach wall with numerous other diners to enjoy our meals. I was casually sitting on a bench with a sandwich in my hand talking with my husband when all of a sudden there's a gust of flapping, feathery wind in my face and I come eye to eye with a seagull whose beak is less than an inch from my hand, trying to pull the roast beef from between my fingers. Of course I screamed in surprise and much chaos ensued under the pagoda. (Mostly, the other diners just laughed) My husband, realizing that he had to take the upper hand, flailed his arms and yelled at the bird until it flew off. And luckily, the gull didn't fly off with my lunch. Just goes to show what kind of risk you take when you eat at Kelly's. But it's still tasty. read more

So the other day -- on that really nice SUMMERY SUNDAY, I had a hankering for a roast beef sandwich. I probably have not had a good roast beef sandwich since the late 80s/early 90s. My fiance was watching some broad on a travel show and she was @ Kelly's in Revere. I took one look and said, "I need that. I neeeed that!" So, to Kelly's we went. We walked up to the outside counter and 15 minutes later we were chowing down on fried whole bellied clams, onion rings, and of course, the most perfect roast beast I've ever had. I used to live right up the street and it is the best place on earth to go at 2am after drinking all night for tons of awesome munchies. Now that I am older I still make the trip here or route one to get what are my favorites: Large Roast Beef w/ lettuce, tomatoe and barbecue sauce, Hot dog with the toasted buttered bun (god it's good) Tuna done the same way The best fried clams with the belly's in the area I love the chowder too but it's the kind that is thin not thick like Legal's with tons of clams and potatoes in it. I used to live nearby but have moved to LA for 9 yrs now and I have not been able to find a roast beef samich like Kellys. The meat melts in your mouth. I get it with pickles and BBQ sauce. BEST BEST lobster roll I've ever had! Now I am from southern California so that might not be saying much but let me tell you, I still dream about this lobster roll. I can't wait for my next visit to Boston where I will jump off the plane and head straight to Kellys! The roll itself is so buttery and delicious, it's full of huge chunks of tender lobster-literally exploding with lobster. The lady in front of me in line(obviously a regular) let me in on a little secret...order the Lobster roll with an extra roll(just the bread, they gave me this for about 50 cents extra) and you can actually make 2 sandwiches for the price of one, there is so much lobster packed on one roll there is more then enough to fill two rolls. Everytime I think about Kellys i get excited!!! Their seafood is the most amazing thing on earth! I am big on seafood and I haven't been disappointed at all whenever I go there. Although I haven't been in awhile my mouth starts to water just thinking about the tarter sauce and fried shrimp, clam, and scallops!!!! nothing reminds me of Boston summers more than hanging out at the beach with a plate of fried shrimp from Kelly's while fighting with the seagulls. What can be said about Kelly's that hasn't been said already? It's one of the best, no doubt. But is it the best? I don't know. I just don't know. When I ate there today I had a goddamn sea gull in my lap ready to lunge at me. Who the hell wants that? But the beef was terrific, and the best slightly crisped bun I've ever had. The beef is cut absolutely perfect. But there's something missing. Succulence. It's not succulent like Nick's or 286 or Nikos. It, quite simply, lacks the taste that the others have. For years people have told me how great Kelly's was and I never thought so and I never got any real good food there. Everything tastes like fish, even the chicken and fries. If they were in the business of selling grease this would be the place. I think because it's been on Rever Beach for so long people just think it's great or maybe they never tasted real food. If you like fried food dripping with grease that all tastes the same this is your place. I would never get the roast beef there again! Great! There's food and my dad and me went to the sand castle fest and had food here while there ...pull pork French fry to be exact. Not quite as good as my dads secret recipe but wow it's great tasty! French fries were so delicious I wish my dad and me went here much more often. We also went swimming.. I've lived around the block from this place for years and used to come here a lot more frequently as the roast beef is solid and the tartar sauce they serve with the seafood is on a whole other level. Prices used to be above average a few years ago but with the increase in prices every year and lower quality, I can't justify coming here anymore. Place always has great customer service. Very clean and obviously well managed. Rarely have a line even during busy times. Food is fresh and pretty good. A little bit expensive, but worth it once in a while. Also kids chicken platter is pretty good deal, plenty for an adult. read more

Cheese fries and chicken finger plate is what I usually get from here which isn't too bad. Other than that, I have not tried anything. However, when I've purchased fries and chicken fingers from here the fries were always cold. read more
