The first thing I love is the create your own Sushi roll. I don't like cucumber and so many of them have cucumber. So it was nice to choose my own ingredients. The teriyaki dishes were good as well. BUT, the novelty of this place, the delicious drink options, and the fabulous food choices makes this place 5 stars in my book. KungFu milk tea with "little" sweetness (30%) - still too sweet for my tastebuds, but delicious nonetheless. Ambiance: Spacious black interior that was actually fairly quiet. Seems like a coffee shop alternative for students who sat around studying and hanging out. Staff was friendly although ordering can be a little overwhelming with the menu layout and ordering kiosks which are an alternative if you're mainly ordering non-sushi items. Food: We got a poke bowl with tuna and salmon which was a fail. The rice was mediocre at best, dull and slightly dry. It didn't have the pearly sheen and stickiness of being seasoned with rice vinegar and rapidly cooled. The fish is plain and not marinated, which is great for sushi but not for poke with unseasoned rice. We added avocado, shredded carrots, and a few other toppings but I was sad to see they didn't have salad greens or seaweed salad. They did have kimchi, which you see in Korean-run Japanese restaurants, but no gochujang sauce which is odd as they pair excellently. The sriracha mayo we got instead was actually spicy but the dish lacked any other source of moisture or acid. To make things worse, the server was heavy-headed with the sauce so it felt like we were mainly eating mayo rice by the time the few pieces of fish were gone. The spicy tuna roll and spider roll were hefty rolls and the innards were well-prepared. The only flaw was that the seaweed came out soggy and chewy which was very distracting. The fact that they use a machine to layer their rice on to the seaweed paper also made me sad, considering how the Japanese have such a culture around sushi-making. Finally, we shared a side of udon which had a good texture but was served in a bland semi-sweet brown sauce. It was so bland it felt like eating spaghetti in sugar water; a chore more than a meal. They should have served it in a dashi broth to make it a worthwhile. Overall, every dish had something majorly flawed about it. There is no passion or artistry in the food here and it came nowhere near fulfilling my expectations of a Japanese restaurant. Teriyaki bowls and build-your-own sushi and bubble tea - an excellent combination for the blossoming food scene of University Circle. It's been a long time since I've eaten in University Circle. I'll admit that if Kenko was open when I was working in the area, I'd be going quite often. The "build your own sushi" aspect is pretty novel. First you choose a protein. Then you get a choice of two vegetables. Your chef will then roll your sushi for you and then allow you to choose two sauces and one topping. The sushi doesn't have to be raw - there are cooked proteins, which include shrimp, crab, chicken, beef, and tofu. Enough vegetable options are available for you to build most of your favorite rolls. Toppings include tempura flakes, fried onions, sesame seed, and kimchi. Also, you're not limited to the number of items I mentioned - add even more variety for a very marginal surcharge. I created a salmon asparagus avocado roll with spicy mayo and masago (mini fish eggs)... just because I could. I would rate fish quality slightly above supermarket quality - you're not going to get Jiro's here, but for around $8, the food exceeds expectations. There's a lot of people behind the counter and I also observed some confusion between orders - so I guess efficiency in food prep could be improved. I also sampled the chicken teriyaki. It reminded me of the chicken teriyaki you get in the mall food court, but it was still tasty. The bonus is that you can also buy Kung Fu bubble tea here. This is a meal where if I had the flu after I ate it, I would probably eat it once I got better. It's THAT good. A roll with spicy tuna, crab, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, rolled up, FRIED IN TEMPURA, and then drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce. WOWEEE. It defies what a normal sushi roll is, but for me, this is what knocks it out of the park and gives it a 5 star rating. I've gotten others hooked on the Li'l Delish as well. Anyway...it's basically a chipotle but with sushi. You can get a bowl or roll, and then either pick one of the few rolls they have listed, or make up your own. I've done both, and I've never been disappointed! I don't have pics right now, but I will post some the next time I get one! First of all, the bubble tea menu encompasses just About every flavor and "type" of tea drink you could want. Slushie, hot tea, iced tea, juice infusion, whatever. And there's just about every type of boba add-on you could imagine. They even ask if you want to customize the level of sweetener and the amount of ice....talk about getting the details right. The teriyaki and poke bowls have a myriad of options, from types of meat to sauce flavors to the "base carb" (white rice? Brown rice ? Udon?), veggie types, the works. What you wind up with is a totally made-your-way bowl of deliciousness with as much meat as you could ever want and certainly leftovers if you so choose. I personally enjoy their poke bowls and you can make your own and personalize it too with what sauces (eel and yum yum sauce are my go tos), meats (love the raw fish), and vegetables you want. They give you a pretty good portion too regardless if you choose salmon or chicken, same price so get the really good stuff if you enjoy raw fish! This place has true, authentic, legit boba, from Kung Fu Tea, a bubble tea chain that is popular all along the east coast and has finally come to town. The boba is cooked perfectly, at the right consistency, not too soft and not too chewy or doughy, and the tea is made correctly. The KF milk tea is what you should get - it's plain black milk tea. Milk tea does tend to be sweet - you can ask for decreased sugar. The sushi is fine - it's slightly better than the quality of sushi you would find in a college cafeteria. The best deal is to make your own sushi roll (8 pieces) for $7. You can pick one fish (they only really have salmon, tuna, tempura shrimp), two vegetables, and two sauces (the eel sauce is great). I tell all the current CWRU students about the sad old days when we never had such great food options around campus. Now, many good joints with varying international tastes. But then, even if they were available, I dont think I would have been able to afford to eat there regularly. Not cheap fast food. Kenko's is good - many varieties of Asian bubble, boba, and fruit slush drinks. Complemented by made to order sushi rolls, sushi-burritos, poke (Hawaiian style sushi) bowls, and teriyaki bowls. You can order using the e-pad devices by the door, or... eep, talk to the folks at the counter. I've enjoyed everything I eat and drink here. Most recently, i returned to campus to recruit at the Case Career Fair and stopped in after for a very tasty sushi-rito filled with my fav items. Plus a yummy large Matcha tea with boba. Dine in at $19.37. NOT a lunch I would be able to afford regularly back when I was a student. This place was honestly my go-to last year. In terms of location, as someone who lives relatively close to University Circle/Little Italy, the location is fabulous, and it's one of the only places I've seen that serves poke bowls. All of the rolls, poke bowls, and sushi burritos are totally customizable, which means that you get exactly what you want. My favorite order is a poke bowl with salmon, tuna, cucumber, avocado, tempura flakes, masago, and sauce (usually spicy mayo or yum yum), and all of this on top of a bed of hot rice only costs ~$10. Of course, my meal is usually more expensive because I add on a bubble tea, but that's another great advantage of this establishment. Be prepared, the bubble tea takes much longer to be prepared than the sushi/bowls, but I've never had a bad experience. I'm a bubble tea connoisseur; I've had it in nearly every state and major city on the east coast of the U.S. and Canada. I fortuitously came across this place while staying at the Courtyard that is just next door! I have been to a few Sushi places that allow for some customizability but this place is unique! They have several rolls available but also allow you to create your own. Being vegetarian, this significantly expanded my options! You start with a wrap of your choice and it seemed like most people go with the classic seaweed wrap but you can also upgrade to a soy wrap for a small price. You can then choose between white and brown rice. There are several seafood/other protein options including tofu. Next come the vegetables and once again, they had several options. You can fit up to 4 vegetables per roll (or one protein and 3 vegetables) and I had mine with carrots, cucumber, avocado, and asparagus. This provided the perfect balance of flavor and texture in my opinion. Moving on, you can choose from several toppings including tempura, fried onions, sweet corn, mango, and more. Finally, you can choose a sauce to top over the rolls or to have on the side. My go-to is always spicy mayo and it did not disappoint! The setup is like Chipotle and it did not take any time at all to get my roll made. The location is also very convenient for people in and around University Circle. Overall, I think the unique aspect of this place is the ability to customize and try some non-traditional ingredients in your rolls. Basically you can pick what kind of fish, veggies and sauce you want and you get 8 normal sized pieces for about $8. It's pretty much grocery store sushi, which is to say, it's not the freshest, it's not the best, but it's cheap and fast. I guess if you're in a hurry and craving sushi this would be a good option? The star of the show was really the bubble tea though, or I should say, their tea options in general, because they have a TON to choose from, even more than the average bubble tea shop. I ended up choosing the coconut milk tea, and boy was it delicious! It didn't have a saccharine sweet or artificial coconut taste, but rather something more akin to pure coconut milk. Their drinks aren't the cheapest, but for the quality I think it's a fair price. The food is quick, but you might end up having to wait a while for bubble tea if they are busy, the preparation is almost like a barista line at Starbucks.
