Ah, mac shack. You opened up the year I graduated from UC, and helped me wade through many sleepless nights. Some eats were for late night study sessions, some were alcohol induced, and some were just the consequence of my sheer dumb luck of being a self-diagnosed insomniac. Whatever the case, I've likely eaten enough Mac shack to constitute that they should've given me a commemorative bowl to walk across the graduation stage with. I am forever grateful to mac shack and the memories it's given me, but here's the thing - she basic. Yes, shocker - the ever-so-aptly named Mac Shack, created from the also basic masterminds of Keystone, is basic. The Mac and cheese is good, but is it great? That's a hot debate. Their toppings are creative, but if you make a bomb Mac and cheese, do you really need four thousand toppings? You are feeding college students, after all. As a demographic, they're not exactly known to need the fanciest silverware and the finest cheeses money can buy. That money has to go toward overpriced tuition. My Mac heyday had me ordering the Pink Floyd (bacon + caramelized onions). Occasionally I added some mushrooms, because health. The onions give a nice sweetness to the Mac and cheese; I find their namesake cheese sauce and Mac to be pretty one noted on its own. I have also ordered the Black Sabbath (brisket+mushrooms) on a number of occasions, but that's when my haaaanger kicks in. She's a heavy one, and she knows it. Look, I'm not here to shame mac shack. She came in clutch for me so many years ago, and if requested, I would go again. I simply would like to inform the non-college yelp readers that this isn't the fanciest place, and this isn't the best cheese. This is definitely a college food spot. The concept sounds great but the food was very average. Not much flavor to the Mac and cheese. I added chicken, crispy onion and jalapeño. Back when Keystone was a full restaurant it was awesome. Delicious homemade ranch, half baked cookies in a cast iron skillet, yum. Visiting Cincinnati I wanted to taste that deliciousness I always raved about and have a bit of nostalgia from college. Unfortunately the restaurants have closed and now it's only the Mac shack. Decided to give it a try thinking it would be just as good, but I was disappointed. Definitely didn't taste the same, bottled ranch and a tiny cookie. Mac shack has always been a great place to eat late at night after the bars. Tonight I did not have that same experience. When I ordered my mac and cheese with no blue cheese, they made it with it. This wouldn't be a big problem if I didn't absolutely hate blue cheese. They refused to make my order correctly claiming that they were too busy when I ordered it correctly in the first place. I was hesitant to try the Mac Shack because being gluten free is such a pain in trying new places. Mac Shack offers gluten free pasta!! If you are very sensitive, be aware that it's put in the same water as regular pasta, but after years of being gluten free, a little cross contamination no longer has an effect on me. However, regular price is only around 8 or 9 dollars and feeds at least two. LOCATION 5/5 Located near UC's campus and surrounded by other restaurants, shops, and Gettler Stadium. Disgusting. I've been to keystone numerous times with a good-decent experience but this dish is absolutely appalling. The cheese sauce used in the macaroni is watery and tastes bad. The stout-braised brisket is cut in squares, (unlike the typical shredded brisket I've had before/displayed in their photos) chewy, disgusting and frankly 90% fat. I walked in craving some mac n cheese, and I got just that. The atmosphere of the building was unmatched, although the music was too loud. Whilst singing Hard Times by Paramore, they decided to skip the song! I was rather upset about this. I had ordered the Pink Floyd with the addition of chicken. I only waited around ten to fifteen minutes. I walked back to my apartment to be stunned by how hot the food still was; bravo! Once it was time to dig in, I was not disappointed. It had everything I could have asked for. The cheese was perfectly melted within the noodles, and the chicken was scrumptious. On the other hand, they did give me a spork for my utensil. The food is good; great comfort food, but you loose stars with me when the ordering process is only through doordash; even for pick up orders, that is poor customer service in my opinion. And when you call to place an order the voicemail says press 1 to order then says the mailbox is full. Just change the voice or better yet answer the phone and take call in orders. This place has been a dream of mine since I first tried Mac Mondays at Keystone many years ago. Having them open until 4am on weekends is terrifyingly convenient for my cheese-centered brain. You walk up to the counter, order, and they prepare it in front of you. $6.50 for the regular portion is fair; it's more than enough food. Getting your food within a few minutes is amazing! Mondays are half price with the purchase of a drink. The Pink Floyd (bacon, caramelized onions) is the mostly undisputed king of the mac. It doesn't take away from the flavor of the complex, slightly spicy cheese sauce. The bacon and onion complement the cheese. Some of the other variations tend to mask the more subtle flavors. It's tiny, so be prepared to take the food out during peak meal times. Finding an open parking space can be tricky as well since it's on such a busy street. read more

My boyfriend and I recently tried out the Mac Shack for the first time. Upon arrival, the girl at the counter welcomed us and asked if we had visited before. Since we had not, she graciously explained the entire menu to us, which was very helpful in our ordering our meals. The food came out hot and quick, and was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. I didn't know what I would think of a Mac n Cheese specialty restaurant. After coming here a few times however, I'd say the Mac n Cheese is good for what it is and the prices are reasonable for the portions especially considering how rich and filling Mac n Cheese is. This is pretty much a typical college student joint and being, you know, a student, a Mac n Cheese place like this suits me when craving classic American comfort food. I ordered the Green Day with spinach and sundried tomatoes. The macaroni was tasty, hot, and came out quick. However, when I asked for breadcrumbs, the person who took my order said "of course!". Then she handed me my receipt a few seconds later, and it didn't say anything about added breadcrumbs. When I received my macaroni, it didn't have breadcrumbs either.
