Escaping from the hot weather we were experiencing in Phoenix, we happened to try this spot because the menu [and Yelp photos] looked inviting. The A/C worked well enough despite the dining area filling up with hungry customers. Seating is laid-back, and ready for a group of four or those willing to share a table. Cordial, English-speaking staff are efficiently working and made sure we were well hydrated during a particularly hot weekend. The food was not as we expected. I had the rice plate and my husband ordered pho. My rice plate was filled with enough rice for all the protein that topped it. My favorites had to be the pork chop and the egg & meat loaf. The pho was fragrant - as it should be - but the flavor of the broth was not developed enough. It tasted like salted water, and the beef flavor only came from the slices they put in the bowl. Maybe we were asking for too much, but the flavors were generally light [at best] and definitely not what I'm used to. Even the nuoc cham tasted watered down...how is that possible? Overall: 2.6 stars. Edible and decent food. The wait staff are quick and personable to the faces they know. But after 10 min we were seated in the very busy restaurant. Earlier an elderly couple walked out and we had mentioned it was our first time to the restaurant. The said, you will not be disappointed. The restaurant is open and it was filled with chatter from the customers. Plenty of seating inside and very busy. We quickly got food. We were often checked on by the servers. We ordered fried and fresh spring rolls for appetizers. Our friends ordered pho. We ordered mixed fried rice (chicken, beef, shrimp), grilled pork with broken rice. I loved everything. Great flavors. Stopped in for dinner one night and randomly chose this place with friends. What a pleasant surprise it was! Khai Hoàn Restaurant is a true hole-in-the-wall with very authentic Vietnamese food. Came here the other day for lunch and was very happy with my experience. The restaurant is no frills and has a relaxed vibe. I ordered the grilled beef with broken rice and a Vietnamese coffee. The entree was great! It was simple but very flavorful, with the beef being very tender and having the slight char from the grill. The dipping sauce and the pickles paired very well to balance the savory goodness. It was also my first time having Vietnamese coffee with the drip contraption they put on top of the glass. I won't lie this place has great food, but I recently picked up an order and I've never ordered vermicelli from this place before, but as someone who is allergic to peanuts, I specifically called and said no peanuts twice over the phone and when I went into the restaurant to pick up the food. I asked three times if there are no peanuts and there are peanuts in my food and now I can't eat it. I'm leaving this as hopefully a wake up. Call to the restaurant that I can't eat this $20 of food that I just spent and have to throw it out because I'm allergic and if I do eat this food I'll get sick and that is just something that is unacceptable in my book when I made sure quadruple checked that there was no peanuts and I even made a hand symbol no peanuts. Was looking for a new pho spot and came across Khai Hoan, near ASU in Tempe. This is one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in Tempe. They will be celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. The owner John was very friendly and answered some questions that I had. The pho takes two days to make and you can definitely taste the quality and care in the preparation. The pho is made with non flour noodles and beef bones are boiled to create the stock. The flavor is very mild and well balanced - not too sweet. I had the pho #2. I also sampled two of their spring rolls. Wrapped in lettuce and mint with oil, they are wonderful. Everything is made daily and fresh. I found my new pho spot and will be back soon. read more

I've been to this pho place so many times and it's always so amazing. The broth is so rich and full of flavor. I usually get the chicken pho, it has chicken breast and broth. The beef pho is also good but it's more on the sweeter side so I prefer the chicken one. The portion size is huge and it's only $15 for the chicken one which is fairly cheap. It has a ton of noodles, green onion, cilantro, and on the side some bean sprouts, jalapeños, and lime. We have also tried the appetizers like the egg rolls, spring rolls, fried shrimp, and the crab puffs, they are all so delicious. The spring rolls have a peanut sauce on the side which tastes great but I prefer mine with some sriracha. I'm not much of a seafood person but my boyfriend and sister love the fried shrimp and crab puffs. The restaurant seems like a family owned place, they're all so kind. They are very attentive with everyone and make sure everyone has what they need. The place has many seating options and has all the silverware you need. My heart is broken to even write this review because we have been going every weekend for multiple weekends in a row and loved it so much, but unfortunately today we witnessed something that is absolutely unsanitary and unacceptable for a restaurant to do. Today at lunch my husband had some remaining veggies that he absolutely touched, put trash on top of, as well as his dirty used chopsticks. The man bussing the table took the trash and chopsticks off the veggie plate and put the plate to the side when dumping out our other dirty dishes. We watched him take the plate to the back and put it on the side by the microwave. We told ourselves there was no way they would re use those veggies especially with our trash on top, but after walking through the kitchen to the restroom to see for ourselves, I witnessed with my own eyes the lady in the kitchen with the veggies in her hand in the sink to wash and reuse for the next guest. As someone that is pregnant and already nervous eating out for risk of cross contamination or bacteria from food not properly cleaned, we will not be back and would advise others to know if your meal comes with a side of veggies and herbs, there is a possibly it came from a prior guest who put their used chopsticks and trash on top of them. read more

Last night I went in and ordered takeout from Khai Hoan in Tempe, and it ended up being a great experience overall. I got pho (#3) and goi cuon (fresh spring rolls with shrimp and rice noodles), and both were really good. The pho had a lot of flavor and tasted fresh, and the portion was enough to last me two days! The spring rolls surprised me the most. They came with a peanut sauce, which I usually don't like since I personally hate peanuts and all peanut products, but theirs was so good I finished the entire cup-full they gave me. It was smooth, not overpowering, and paired so well with the rolls. That alone made the meal stand out. I ordered my food to go, and the service was great! The gentleman who took my order was really friendly and told me where I could sit while I waited. It didn't take long at all for them to prepare my order, and they brought the food directly to me when it was ready, which was really nice. The atmosphere was also awesome--very chill and casual. Since it's in close proximity to ASU's campus, there were a lot of college students there, either grabbing dinner or studying, which made it feel comfortable and familiar. It also seemed like a place people come back to regularly, which says a lot about the consistency of the food. I will absolutely be coming back. I loved how the egg rolls were presented with the fresh veggies and fish sauce to go with it all. Delicious! I'm not typically a fan of crab puffs, but my daughter wanted to try them so we ordered them. These were quite good. The pho portions were huge, good portions of protein and full of flavor. Additional toppings were fresh and plentiful and jalepeno pretty spicy. Everything you need is at the table from chopsticks, sauces, spoons and more. I was greeted by friendly customer service and the food quickly came out fresh to order. The egg rolls are to die for! Some of the best I have ever had. Decent portion size too and the meat was really nice and thin. I do wish they provided more garnishes with the pho, as they only gave us 1 lime each and we had to split one side of bean sprouts. Our bowls were 12.95 a piece. It's a small restaurant and you kind of seat yourself so keep that in mind. The staff are quick, friendly, and efficient.
