Was super excited for my trip to Khao Kang based on rave reviews I've read, but unfortunately left a little bit disappointed. The food was alright, but nothing mind blowing and was served at room temperature. Would come back if I was in the area, but wouldn't travel for it again

3.75 More than a couple of years since I last went here. Now $17 for 3-combo with rice, $16 for 2. Prices have gone up. I do like the option to try small amounts of dishes esp. the ones I am not familiar with, as opposed to a whole order of each. Got Yellow sour curry - too spicy for me to have the sauce so only took the fish strips (4 small pcs) and veg. Black pepper pork - sweet, tender pieces, a relief from the other spicy dishes. Spicy fish - with eggplant. More batter than fish though and slightly chewy bec. cold. Wished the food were hot/even warmer, so this is a difference from getting food freshly-cooked. Service was amiable. Walls were opened up during the warmer season/days so airy indoors; plus outdoors tables covered by umbrellas. Meter and street parking if driving. By train, walking distance from Elmhurst Ave. stop.

Not exaggerating when I say this is the only Thai food I've liked!!! Most of my qualms w Thai food lie in that they're too sweet, too sour, and/or too spicy. I must've ordered the right items because everything was savory and so delicious!! - Pork belly stew: tender, juicy pork belly with a boiled egg and firm tofu. This is incredibly reminiscent of Vietnamese thit kho, which maybe just a touch more sweetness. The flavor of the stew was incredible and I happily splashed it all over my plain rice. - Spicy fried fish: This one was indeed a little spicy, but the tender fish was addicting. I also enjoyed that this dish came with green beans and eggplant for a bit of variety. - Fried pork: SOOO GOOD and my favorite entree of the meal. The pork has a bite but is still moist, has a slightly caramelized and charred glaze that gives it an incredible amount of flavor, and the fatty bits just melt in your mouth. I was here just a few days ago and am already trying to plan out when I'll be back so I can have more of this. - Fried bananas: Slightly crisp and naturally sweet! They were just a bit too dense for my liking but I nibbled on them between bites of the fish to help with the spice. Incredible spot with authentic dishes -- be sure to come by if you're in the neighborhood! As of Nov 2025, plates w 3 entrees are about $18.

Extremely warm and friendly is service in a clean and pleasant restaurant. Cash only. I ordered 3 items over rice and I picked a braised pork dish, a chicken curry, and some other type of spicy pork. I also got a Thai iced tea. The braised pork was extremely tender with soft, melt in your mouth fat. It came with a piece of fried tofu and a hard boiled egg, all of which had soaked up a huge amount of flavor from the braising liquid which was sweet and full of warm spices like star anise and cinnamon. The chicken curry was packed with ginger and other aromatics and had some heat to it. The vegetables in the curry are very soft and the chicken is tender. The employee asked me if I like spicy when I ordered the third dish, and I said yes because I forgot I was in a Thai restaurant. Although definitely at the high end of my spice tolerance, I couldn't stop eating this. It is not just plainly spicy, it is packed with lemongrass and other flavors that make you just want to keep eating. Sips of Thai iced tea, which is always delicious, helped keep my mouth cool. It was a little over $20 for this meal, which felt reasonable. I would love to return soon to try some of the other available dishes.

I'm slightly disappointed after my second visit here. My first experience was truly amazing--it was, quite literally, the best Thai food I've had outside of Thailand! Unfortunately, the second trip really fell short. I wonder if it's a classic case of the sequel never being as good as the original, especially since the first visit completely blew away my expectations. My main issue this time around was the food quality. It seems the entrees are prepared well in advance so the flavors can soak all day. While that sounds good in theory, it meant the freshness wasn't quite there, and the variety offered isn't vast. I still enjoyed my meal, but I wasn't left dying to rush back the way I was after the first visit. If I happen to be in the area and it's a convenient detour, I might stop by again. Otherwise, I'll probably spend my time exploring the abundance of hot, new restaurants popping up everywhere.

First time coming here and I am a fan now. Staff are soooo nice and friendly. Very accommodating and knowing it was our first time, she gave us samples of everything and that was an extra plus in my book. After trying almost everything, it was hard to choose only 3 entrees with our rice. $17 for rice and 3 entrees is decent compared to other places I have eaten. With a great staff and cozy environment, the price was just right. The popular fried sweet pork, red curry chicken and the fish with eggplant were my top choices. That red chicken curry was spicy and I loved every bite. We also ordered the rice noodles, curry shrimp and string beans, also top 10 in our book. Will be coming back for lunch very soon.

    3 dishes over rice

This place is so cute! It is basically like a little cafeteria with a bunch of side dishes laid out and you choose what you would like from what they have available. Because it was very early, my boyfriend and I split the 3 side dishes over rice and it was soooo delicious. We got a pork dish with an egg and tofu, this one was just ok, it was a little sweet for my taste but we devoured it. We also tried the Green Curry with Chicken and this was sooo good. Not spicy at all and the chicken was sooo tender and I might be biased because it was green curry but I love curries that have a coconut base. The last side dishes we tried was a Basil Pork dish which was also very flavorful. I think this was the highlight of the meal. We finished everything off with a nice cold chrysanthemum tea but if you have a sweet tooth, they also have prepackaged dessert available. The servers were attentive and let us know that they were gonna get to us in a minute due to the fact that their take out seemed pretty busy. Definitely a great place to visit if you're looking for a quick and homey Thai place. After you order, they give you the food right away and you pay and take a to an empty table of your choice. Just be wary though, it is cash only!!

There are no vegetarian entrees. I knew this going in, so I decided to stop by for dessert. I picked up a pandan coconut jelly for $6 (cash only), and was pretty disappointed - there wasn't much flavor at all apart from just sugar, and the jelly was much harder than I was expecting. Pretty disappointing overall.

Great value for the price! It's cafeteria-style and you can get 3 entrees and rice for $17, and I was extremely full after finishing my order. I love the variety of food they have available as well- sauteed meats/veggies, soups and curries, fried chicken/fish dishes and more. I really enjoyed the fish with eggplant and the stewed beef with green beans (not sure of the official names for each dish). Overall, perfect place for a quick takeout or a cozy meal with friends/family- I'm eager to go back!

I really loved Khao Kang. I love spots like this where you have plenty of options to chose from and it's affordable and tasty. Absolutely nothing more that I could want. I ordered the black pepper pork, the garlic pork, and green curry. The woman who helped us also gave us a few pieces of the fish so we could try it, really nice of her. The black pepper pork is fantastic. Despite it appearing dry, it is perfectly moist with the right about of char and fattiness. My friends and I all agreed that this was our favorite. The green curry was on point with some heat, I would get this again! The garlic pork was good too but not as good as the other two. I would pass on this next time and try something else. Overall, I'd highly recommend coming to Khao Kang.

3.5 Star*** Got the 3 dishes + rice for $17 and Thai iced tea for $3.75. For the 3 dishes I got the spicy pork, jungle curry and the herbal fish. I think the pork was well marinated but gets tiring to eat after a whole. The jungle curry was very fishy and too spicy for me. The herbal fish was good with a decent kick. The thai iced tea had a lot of ice and when I finished my drink I realized 70% was ice. Overall, the food is ok but not hot. Portions were not as generous (except for the pork) as I would like for $17 and they definitely could have given more rice. Service was nice and staff gave recommendations. You get your food and grab a seat. There's a couple tables but it was relatively empty when I went. There was also a weird smell you'll notice the second you enter the restaurant which made the meal less enjoyable. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be back as there are better places in this area.

Came here after I saw an action Bronson clip talking about how this place has some of the craziest flavors and spices he's ever had at a Thai restaurant in nyc and while this comment does have some credibility there are some serious cons about this place which hinder its potential. This place serves thai food, buffet style, which is typical of many Asian fast food restaurant, whats not typical however is how inflated the prices are here, at 17.50 for three items and a rice, this place charges nearly double what a Chinese 3 choice one soup spot would cost and with much skimpier portions too. Buffet style fast food spots have their shortfalls and this place is no exception, the second time I came back to this place, business slowed down considerably, with the slow down the quality of the food also went downhill as well since the turn over isn't as fast and some of the items seemed to have sat around for some time creating lukewarm, hard or soggy dishes depending on what you ordered. We also ordered a jungle curry here which was a little too fishy, bitter, gritty and grimey for our liking. I would enjoy this place much more if it didnt overinflate its prices and kept better quality control

Food: I was excited to try this place because it seems very popular, but I wasn't impressed by the food. The food is already prepared and displayed in their hot bar. The food wasn't hot at all which was disappointing. You have a choice of two or three dishes with white rice. I chose the red curry, garlic pork, and pork belly with string beans. The most popular dish is the garlic pork, which was my favorite out of the three dishes. Although it wasn't hot, it was very moist and flavorful. The red curry and pork belly were just average and nothing special. I would highly recommend their Thai iced tea. Service: The staff are friendly and very welcoming. They made recommendations for the most popular dishes. Ambiance: The place isn't big but there are tables for you to eat your food after ordering. Not ideal for large groups. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and don't plan to return. There are much better Thai restaurants in the area.

They definitely didn't tell me that lunch specials were available before I ordered my soup. Other than that, everyone is pleasant. Space: they have two sides, so plenty of space, but nights and weekends can get pretty packed, so keep that in mind. Food: I ordered Tom Yum soup and a lunch drunken noodle with a Thai iced tea. I only had the soup there and took the entire lunch special to go. Just based off of the soup, I will be going back. It was delicious and PACKED to the MAX! Writing this now, I can still imagine. Drunken Noodles were also really tasty. I like mine spicy and it could have been made spicier, but that's not even a real complaint. Also- the one next to me had this dish which reminded me of pad see ew but in a gravy. Looked delicious!! I will be back for whatever she had. Overall: the entire block is like a little Thai street. The server was so nice and accomodating to us! - Tom Yum Soup - Such a great soup! The flavor was super rich which contrasted very well with the fresh mushrooms. - Crispy Duck Panang Curry - I love that this dish came with rice as I feel like at most Thai restaurants in the city you need to order it on the side. The duck was extremely crispy and the flavor of the breast went very well with the rich curry. - Raw Shrimp Salad - I've never had this dish before so I was very interested in its flavor and it delivered! The shrimp had such a wonderful sour but fresh flavor while the inside of the shrimp was slightly soft almost like an uni texture. The best word to describe it was umami! The raw bitter melon and the garlic was also interesting to contrast the fishy flavor of the shrimp although we didn't really finish these side pieces at the end. I wish they cleaned the shrimp a bit better as there were still some poop tracks in the shrimp. Overall, a wonderful restaurant and would be very happy to come back to try more of their items!

The steak was the only dish that showed any sign of life. Everything else tasted as if it had been rinsed with water before being served--completely stripped of seasoning, aroma, and any trace of authentic Thai flavor. It's astonishing that a restaurant with such a strong reputation could produce food that's less flavorful than the faux Thai takeout spots tucked inside Chinese restaurants off the Ohio Turnpike. That's not an exaggeration. What's even more baffling is the location. In the heart of Queens, surrounded by Thai restaurants serving bold, vibrant, unapologetically flavorful food, Zaab Zaab somehow manages to be a culinary desert. The fried rice was bland, the drunken noodles were lifeless, and the pad kra pao lacked the punch, basil, heat, and savoriness that define the dish. It honestly felt as though the menu had been engineered for diners who think black pepper is adventurous. Instead of authentic Thai flavors, everything seemed toned down to the point of being unrecognizable. For a restaurant with this reputation, the meal was a massive letdown. There are countless nearby Thai restaurants that deliver the bold, aromatic flavors Thailand is known for. Save your money and your appetite for one of them.
