Khao Nom is in a hidden location, GPS will stop at the corner where there is another Thai restaurant, first I thought Khao Nom is in the same building but on a different floor. I had to ask local people to find this place. The restaurant is not big but good enough for a family of five. There are about 8 or 10 small tables, you can see an open kitchen while dining which is good so they will keep it clean. They have various dishes and desserts to choose from including Thai drinks. Their standouts are the unique desserts and drinks. I really love their butterfly pea lemonade and pandan desserts. The crispy shrimp and mango salad dish however was a disappointment. It's similar to the corn fritter appetizer, but instead of corn, the fritters consist of tiny dried shrimps. I felt that the dish was extremely overpriced at $14, especially because you don't get regular sized shrimp. You get the small dried shrimp clumped into a fritter. The fritters were not bad, but I didn't feel this dish was a solid main entree or worth $14. It was like they combined two appetizers (mango salad and shrimp fritters). The mango salad was in sweet sauce similar to the one that came with the corn fritters and was a bit too sweet for me. The sauce seemed a bit syrupy. Had a great dinner at Khao Nom after seeing it appear in a list of restaurants that Chefs enjoy visiting. We started with the rice taco and Thai corn fritter. Both were very generous portions, with the rice taco in particular large enough to be a whole meal (and my favorite of the two, although the corn fritter has a unique and good texture). The pickled mackarel with chilis and other herbs was unique and aromatic and was good to cleanse the palate. Our mains were both delicious. The dry spice from the Shan Noodle stuck to the tongue in a good way, and the prawns were expertly prepared. The crispy basil pork was simple and delicious and I appreciated the side of a simple chicken broth, which helped clear away some of the spice. We did not try any deserts, which I know is a signature of theirs, so will definitely be returning to give it a try. read more

For $5, a dish of homemade ice cream was satisfying. I picked taro black bean and thai tea flavors and had toppings of palm seeds, sticky rice, peanuts, corn and not sure but one tasted like sweetened plantain or jackfruit? Also tried a crunchy crepe with meringue and egg yolk threads. Went well with the ice cream because it gave the crunch like a cone. So many other desserts to try so will surely go back. 3.5 stars but rounding up for friendliness of the staff. Food was fine but not standout. They have their own rendition of the fried watercress with seafood salad that's on the menu of all the Thai restaurants in Elmhurst / Woodside, except theirs is fried enoki mushroom and the seafood part tasted more sweet and has more sauce. I prefer a less saucy version but the enoki mushrooms were a fun addition. The steamed rice roll wrap was interesting - kind of reminded me of a Chinese rice roll except the fillings in this one had much more spice. I wasn't a huge fan of the spice and ended up not loving the dish as a whole. But really what you're coming here for is the dessert. I got the egg thread cake, but found it boring in flavor and honestly kind of dry. I'd skip it despite its pretty presentation. At this point I was ready to write off Khao Nom, but I got one of their coconut pudding desserts. It's coconut pudding layered with pandan, and this was standout delicious. Do not miss it. So eat dinner at one of the nearby Thai spots, and then come here and stick to the more traditional desserts. read more

Thai desserts in NYC are kind of like an underground thing. Its hard to find when you really want it and hardcore eaters and natives always debate how good the bites are when you actually get them. Khao Nom is a dessert place that satisfies the natives (I brought some with me) and is about as authentic as it can get on this side of the pond. Opened by the owners of the excellent Khao Kang next door, this place focuses more on the sweet side of Thai cuisine, of which there are many choices. My wife came here specifically for the sweet, thin and crispy pancakes topped with sugary egg threads (foi thong) that brought her back to her childhood. We also got a number of other things to try: coconut pudding (tasty), kanom chan (pandan flavored glutinous dessert) and the home made ice cream (more on that below). The traditional Thai desserts were fresh and incredibly tasty. Far better than the hit and miss of getting them from the counter down the street at Sugar or even worse out of the fridge at Sripraphai. The best thing here though was the home made ice cream. We tried the Thai tea and the coconut. The coconut was rich and chock full of coconut taste and came with a bunch of condiments that are popular with Thais (sweet taro, corn etc.) The Thai iced tea ice cream though was really good (tasted just like Thai iced tea) and came with a bit of sticky rice (great texture difference) as well as some other trimmings. For 5 bucks, it was a generous helping. Prices here are very affordable and the decor is fun and clean. Service here is also really good as the staff will explain to anyone what is in each dessert and how it tastes. Big thumbs up, its a great way to finish a meal if you're chowing down next door or down the street. read more

Two weeks opened, this Thai restaurant serves delicious food from a relatively short menu, with several apps and some noodle dishes, nothing over $10. They are located right behind the famed Khao Kang, so the assumption is that this is their sister restaurant. I wouldn't be surprised because the quality of food here is just as authentic tasting and equally as delicious. I'm a regular customer going at least 2 times a week for takeout there coz I live nearby and it's been good so far. But I went there yesterday for desserts with my friend came all the way here but the old lady working there was mean and not nice to us. Ordered their Chan noodle which exceeded expectations! Noodles are super flavorful, only thing to beware of is that the shrimp skin is incredibly hard to peel off. I think you're supposed to eat the skin because that's where most of the flavor and sauce is but I like to peel my shrimp. The highlight of the meal was really the dessert. This is a (mostly) dessert place operated by the people who own Khao Kang next door. It has many enticing-looking dessert choices for $2 each, as well as as some larger options for $5-6. There is also a savory menu. I started with the taro custard, which was a large serving for $2. It was decent, but not something I'd have again. I was expecting something with a bit more finesse and more custardy. It was essentially like eating a square of taro birthday cake filling. It was just mildly sweet, which I appreciated. I do wish the top had some sort of contrasting texture or flavor. If they could make this custard more delicate and then did a brûlée of the top, it'd be a winner. The better dessert I had was the Thai iced tea ice cream. For $5, you get two scoops of a made-in-house Thai iced tea ice cream. It also comes with a scoop of sweet glutenous rice as well as some toppings. The ice cream itself seemed sort of icy to me. And the flavor was okay, but not great. A friend's recommendation brought me to the restaurant today. I was ready for some good Thai food. Reviews were solid, pictures look nice, I am ready. Let's breakdown my feast: curry puff, crispy crab roll, crispy rice taco, northern yellow curry chicken, seafood drunken egg noodle and shrimp cake. (1) The curry puff was built nice with a great crust. The mushy paste inside was a dry let down as I would have expected ground chicken and potato. It had a nice kick. (2) Crispy crab roll was "different" it tasted like fermented crab which if you've never had it is an experience. Personally not a fan. (3) Crispy rice taco, interesting choice of a name as it looks like a fried pancake. I like the coconut taste crunch was great. (4) Northern yellow curry chicken was a surprise. I've had Thai curries and was ready for curry, chicken maybe a veggie. This was a giant chicken leg (wonder what that chicken ate) in a vat of curry with two kinds of noodles to add. Curry had a kick but I wasn't a fan of the chicken leg which was tough. It needed to be cooked more in the curry, not worth $10. (5) seafood drunken noodle was intense. The combination was good but I think it would have been better with flat noodles. (6) shrimp cake, in my opinion the best part of the meal. Imagine fritters but with shrimp. This was well done. Love this place for both food & dessert. They serve one of the most authentic Thai tastes you can find in NYC. My fav dishes are Tom Yum noodle, Sen Chan Pad Thai and Spicy fish salad. This is an incredible place to go for dessert. We stopped in after having hot pot lunch at iCook nearby, looking for something sweet after having had lots of savory sauces. Khao Nom did not disappoint. There are sweets on display by the counter, and sweets on the menu. They do not necessarily overlap, so make sure you take a gander at both. We ended up having the taro custard, the coconut pudding (2 for $2), a different coconut custard, and the thai iced tea ice cream. The desserts are well balanced, not too sweet, and for the coconut desserts, actually turned out to be more on the savory side. It was a very pleasant surprise, especially since one person in our party was not a big fan of coconut, but enjoyed every single dish anyway. Everyone around us was ordering lunch, so I'll have to come back and try their other menu items as well.
