This place has the best tom yum noodle soup I've had. Randomly discovered this restaurant a few months ago and got the tom yum noodle soup and thought it was amazing. Spent the next few months ordering tom yum noodle soup at every Thai restaurant I went to in hopes to match the quality here, but was disappointed every time. Thought I had overhyped it for myself but then picked it up again today and had the same reaction. Thai iced tea is good too. Affordable for the quality and portion. Can't say much about the other food here since I've only been here twice but if the other dishes match up to the quality of the tom yum noodle soup, I'd love to try more of the food here. It looks like I have found another neighborhood gem that I'll be a regular at! Khao Nom has been on my radar for awhile now given that they're one of the few Thai restaurants in my neighborhood that has a big Thai dessert menu. We walked in for lunch on a Friday and were surprised to see that there was no lunch special menu. No matter-- the prices were still on the lower end for Thai food and very competitive compared to other places in our neighborhood. As always, I found myself looking for my go to basics of Pad Thai, Crab Fried Rice, Pad See Ew. To my surprise, they were absent. However, there were so many other delicious sounding dishes that we ended up ordering a bunch of things we usually don't get at a Thai Restaurant: Hor Joy, Fried Pork Belly Over Rice, and Ocean Salad. My fiancee also ordered a Thai Iced Coffee, which was shockingly only $3!! The coffee came in a big glass with shaved ices and was strong yet sweet. Hor Joy: This appetizer comprised of crab meat and pork wrapped in fried tofu skin. This was the perfect app to whet the appetite. Each piece didn't have a bold flavor but the sweet and sour sauce complemented the flavors so well. Fried Pork Belly Over Rice: This was what it sounds like. While it was good and tasted great with the sweet tamarind sauce, I think this is a plain dish and would recommend getting one of the other variations on the menu. Ocean Salad: A very unique salad comprised of fried enoki with a sweet and tangy ceviche of baby scallop, shrimp, cashews and carrots. I really loved this dish and the ceviche was such a refreshing pairing to the fried crisps! While it looked intimidating, this was actually a light dish that kept me wanting more. Finally to close out a great meal, we had to get the Pandan shaved ice for dessert. For $5 we got a big bowl of coconut milk shaved ice with condensed milk, jackfruit, and pandan jellies. It was delicious, sweet, and a must try for pandan/coconut lovers. We had such a great time that we bought a box of their pandan coconut jellies home. These look dense but in fact are some of the lightest, softest, and most fragrant jelly desserts I have ever had. The coconut flavor is strong but accented with floral notes. Ambiance and service here is on the casual side, with sewing machine tables and minimal seating but the food here is so authentic and delicious that it overshadows any shortcomings. read more

The reality is ...... I don't want to share how good this place is because I want it to be my little secret BUT they deserve more recognition. Twice as good as some of the other (unnamed) more popular places in this area yet at a far more reasonable price point and great portions. The pandan crepe rolls are to drool over. The soups, stews, friend fish and chicken are just too incredibly tasty the service is always sweet and prompt. On my journey to find a go to Thai Spot and sadly this wasn't going to be it. Ambience: Industrial vibes with old world sewing machine tables. I loved it. It was quickly ruined when not one but two tables were sticky and there was food still on them. I understand if it's busy but there was no one inside on a Tuesday mid-day. We ordered the Kao Moo Dang, Mixed Seafood Noddles, and the Kao Pod Tod. The Kao Moo Dang essentially is a sampler served with rice and a broth. The crispy pork could have been so much better. It was served at room temperature. Nothing on the plate felt like it touched a hot pan or at least and oven. There was a sliced pork in an overly sweet sauce. The sausage was nice but needed to be warm. The broth was the highlight. The mixed seafood noodle was weird. Each component had a different flavor. The shrimp was tasty but the squid was chewy and felt old. The scallop was over cooked and chewy. The noodles were mushy and tasted weird. This isn't my first rodeo with Thai food and this wasn't the usual flavors. The Kao Pod Tod was good. It's corn fried in batter. My SO decided to pass on desert and she really wanted to enjoy the pandan pancake but it was unfortunately not something that's freshly made. It's just in a container sitting at the desk. The waitress and cashier were polite and friendly. Unfortunately this will not be a repeat. From all the reviews I expected better. I wanted it to be my close go to Thai spot. Walked in as a group of 4 on a Saturday afternoon and immediately got seated. This place is definitely more of a order at the counter, grab your stuff get out but if you have time, you could sit and enjoy a quick bite. I got the following: Tofu Skin Rolls Tom Yum Noodle Soup BBQ pork The Tofu Skin Rolls' outside was light and crispy, the inside pork was well seasoned, it had a slight fish/ crab and garlic flavor. A group of family, friends, and I dined at Khao Nom in Elmhurst, Queens, NYC and it might be safe to say this is the best and also most authentic Thai food I've eaten in NY thus far, and possibly ever. We had a lunch with friends last week at their outdoor dining and it's cozy with strong heater. We had 2 small plates to share as appetizers, Crispy Crab Spring Roll and BBQ Pork Jowl. For entree, we ordered 2 bowls of Tum Yum Noodle Soup, 1 Grilled Fish Salad and 1 Chicken Yellow Curry Noodle. The food was amazingly delicious and our favorite was the Tum Yum Noodle Soup, which was flavorful with lots of ingredients. Khao Nom is located behind its sister restaurant Khao Kang, on the Thai restaurant row of Woodside Avenue, Elmhurst. We stopped by Khao Nom for an outdoor lunch on one of the last temperate days of November 2020. The restaurant has a mostly enclosed outdoor dining area that protects against wind and rain, with two entrances and heat lamps. Khao Nom seems true to Thai levels of spice (heat), which should be understood before making a decision to come here. While I enjoyed the food, the spice levels made the experience uncomfortable for my companion, as even a mild level in her food was too much for her. The default heat level of my food was so high that it momentarily affected my friend's hearing. Dishes We've Had: - Yellow Curry Chicken Noodle (Chicken Khao Soi). My family and I came and tried their curry dish, the pad Thai, an appetizer that I forgot the name but so good and not spicy (it had shrimp and small scallops) definitely ordering again, and a rice dish. I loved the ambience and they have desserts on display that reminded my in laws of Southeast Asia. The service was very quick and attentive, quick to give us water and checking on us. This was a tiny cute restaurant that I wanted to try. We ordered the fried corn fritters and the Tom yum noodle soup. Both were absolutely delicious. The fritters were crispy and chewy, and you can really taste and feel the corn. The pickled cucumbers and red onion really enhanced the flavoring of the dish. My only complaint is that it was still pretty oily when it came to us so as it sat, it got soggier as time passed. The Tom yum soup was nice and hearty, with a little sweet and sourness that really satisfies your taste buds. The soft boiled egg was cooked to perfection and the pieces of bbq pork really melted in your mouth after soaking in the soup. The soup was also on the thicker in so it ended up being similar to a watery sauce. These two dishes ended up being good for two people, though it was a bit on the lighter side. This place is a haven for Thai desserts. In the week leading up to my planned meal here, I fantasized about the Thai tea cream puff, pandan torched meringue tart, and steamed banana cake that I saw on their Yelp page. Unfortunately for me, they were out of most of their desserts by the time I arrived on a weekday evening. What I did get to try was mostly delicious. I'll start with the good. The hot basil seafood rice dish is exactly the sort of comfort meal my rice loving self craves on a rainy day. The sliced peppers had that charred, breath of the wok aroma, and there were plenty of scallops, shrimp and squid, flecked with a spicy chilli that grew in heat over time. The sauce paired incredibly well with the jasmine rice and crispy fried egg it came with. The bowl of soup was light but had a deep, delicious umami to it. The shrimp cake were some of the best I've ever had. The outside was coated with a crispy breading and the inside was akin to fish cake, except even more flavorful with shrimp. The sweet sauce it came with gave it the perfect balance between sweet and savory. When I ate these for leftovers the next day, I drizzled some honey on top and it had the same effect. I was very intrigued by the corn fritters, recalling the ones my Burmese nanny used to make. These didn't come in the crispy batter I expected and had an almost cake like texture, even though they were deep fried. I'm glad I tried them but wouldn't order again. The two desserts I did try were a bit of a disappointment. The pandan sticky rice cake with salted yolk on top was okay, but not terribly exciting. The deep fried yam balls tasted a lot like funnel cake and I didn't want to have more than a couple of bites. I came in expecting to be floored by the desserts and just liking the savory entrees, but left with the reverse sentiment. Totally okay, I like surprises. I'll have to return earlier in the day before they run out of desserts. read more

Hubby ordered the fried chicken with ginger rice and that was fantastic. Chicken was juicy and the breading made it crispy. The complimentary soup was absolutely delicious. My steam chicken over ginger rice was very bland and dried. You really needed their house ginger soy sauce to make it edible. I enjoyed their chrysanthemum tea. Their butterfly pea tea was surprisingly really lemony. I would have love to try some of their desserts but maybe for next time. My friend and I came for dessert. I was really looking forward to the roasted taro custard cake and was expecting a different texture. I think they use real taro, which is great, but I was hoping for a tres leches type of texture. It was much grittier than I would like it to be. The taro balls dessert soup was very similar to the Chinese version which made it not very exciting but still good on a cold day. The roasted taro custard cakes tasted great soaked in the coconut milk (*hint* *hint* new dessert idea). They were very generous with the mochi balls and only 2 pieces of cocount. Wish there was sweet potatoes or grass jelly for texture contrasts. Lastly, our favorite were the light and fluffy egg waffle like pandan custard filled rolls.
