My BFF and I walk up to this place at 8:19pm. There's a worker outside, closing up the outdoor seating umbrellas and he says, "you know we close at 9, right?" I reply, " yes, is it OK to go in?" He begrudgingly says, "yeah". We felt like he wanted us to know that he wanted us out at the stroke of 9. So after walking inside to an empty restaurant, we stood at the counter for about 30 seconds and decided we wanted nothing to do with this place and left without ordering. We ordered the Chicken Ping, which was yummy, but needed more char, mostly because the char was sooooo good. The tamarind dipping sauce was delectable and I would eat that on a shoe. I thought this place was just okay overall. The service was good and attentive. I really enjoyed the pumpkin curry, it was flavorful and comforting. However, the pad thai didn't quite impress me; the noodles were a bit mushy and lacked the kick I was expecting. Chicken on a stick. What is more street food than that right? It was well cooked, well seasoned, healthy pieces of chicken on four skewers with just a light touch of char. They were busy this night, but their service was still timely, though they still apologized for it. The restaurant is a lovely little corner spot, across from this excellent prosthodontist. My one comment on the ambience was that if you have back problems or sixth point of contact issues, those seats are way uncomfortable. I'd think about outdoor seating or maybe get it togo. My only other regret was that there wasn't quite enough char. In a perfect world I think this chicken would've been cut into six pieces, and have more char, like a brownie pan that manages to be all side pieces. Perfection. Tried the Basil Chicken. Unsure what part of the chicken got cut up, battered and deep fried but my husband & I ended up actually having to spit out some pieces. I love Thai food so we met some friends here for dinner. We ordered a variety of appetizers and all were really good. Our dinner dishes were delicious, basil chicken was my favorite. The Pad See Ew wasn't as sweet as most places but it was still delicious. The service was fast and friendly. It's a small place and I was happy it wasn't very busy because I can see it being loud. Great place to visit in the town of Bethany. Loved this place. Very authentic and reminded of some small places that you find in Thailand. Service was friendly and attentive. Food was spot on and tasted great. Menu showed pad see ew with chicken but they accommodated my request for shrimp. Large prawns were served with my noodle dish. Thai music plays in the background but not overly loud and offers the perfect ambiance. Place was clean. I would highly recommend and come back for more. Nice little spot in Bethany. Khao San has a variety of options, most of which you can make vegan and vegetarian even though the titles seem otherwise. The Pad Thai with Tofu was solid, authentic with a ton of flavor. The Yellow Curry was also good, with the medium spice carrying the right amount of heat. It also came chock-full of tofu and other toppings, which made it very filling. Both dishes were made Vegan with Tofu and Medium Spice - though the Pad Thai was milder than the curry. I hope they do come around and keep the name of each dish without including the default protein as it made it confusing to order but other than than that it's worth checking out! read more

It's been 8 years since my last discussion of Khao San, so let's provide a little update: "Excellent flavors, expertly prepared." remains very true. The crispy pork belly remains crispy and porky, the sauces remain well-balanced. The people remain, well... nice. Perhaps not terribly efficient. Their grasp of flavor balance remains impressive, even if I do find myself often ordering 2 dishes to improve the protein-vegetable pairings. I have come here again, and again, and again. As the years have progressed, Khao San has done a fantastic job keeping its pricing accessible and its portions fair. Yes, there is bigger, better Thai in the Portland area... but not a lot of it. Even if you only have Thai once in a blue moon, Khao San should be in your rotation. The thing which stands out the most about Khao San, though, and why it easily holds its rating, is something subtle. It might sound a bit odd, but Khao San puts out one particular vibe: Respect. Khao San's cooks show great respect for their ingredients, not smothering them, but rather, accentuating their strengths. The prices respect your money, and therefore your time and effort, while also being fair to the business. The service staff both give and demand respect, taking their jobs seriously and reaching far to accommodate the patrons. Yes, sometimes someone forgets to check the front for patrons, but more often, a waitress thinks to confirm possible allergies to surprising ingredients. Strangely, a few of the Lunch menu items are more expensive than dinner pricing, so check on that before you order. Pad Thai with shrimp: 3/5 This was seasoned too sweetly for me, and mostly consisted of slightly gummy rice noodles. More bean sprouts and other toppings would have been nice. You do get 4 nice-sized shrimp, which were cooked properly. Thai iced tea (free with Yelp check-in!): Unfortunately, also too sweet, but still tasty. Ya, this fancy strip mall complex in the suburbs is exactly where (you'd totally expect) to find Khao San serving all the Thai street-style favorites you like, but can't get at "that place around the corner." I wasn't necessarily hungry when I discovered Khao San, but that's not important when there's: * Hoy Joh ($8.95 - 5 stars) Yeah, Boy! Pork, Shrimp, Crab Meat, and Water Chestnut fried in a Bean Curd Skin with a tangy homemade sweet 'n sour dipping sauce. Note to self and others I'm eating with: there are only 5 per order ... and I want (need) all five. * Khao Lam ($5.25 - 4 stars) Smoked in a burning bamboo shoot, this Sticky Rice with Bean dessert is satisfying, but not sweet ... kind of like Billie Eilish before Vogue. Other Thai choices were safer: * Crying Tiger ($19.75 - 4 stars) Thin, short, yet a little-too-fatty Ribeye Steak cuts were tender and surprisingly sweet. Not all the pieces were edible or meaty, but, otherwise, the beef was y to the u to the mmy. * Fresh Summer Rolls ($6.25 - 2 stars) Oops, somebody forgot the flavor. They didn't even taste healthy. Use the thick Thai Peanut dipping sauce liberally and hope you like it because that will be the only zing. Indoor dining preserved the casual and comfortable atmosphere of eating Thai street food. Even cooler was the lone server running the entire experience who kept her cool no matter how busy it got. The Khao soy was really flavorful, with a good amount of tofu, along with pickled veggies. In town for the weekend and was craving Thai food so I googled "Thai food in the area" and this place popped up... what a gem! The restaurant itself is super cute and the food was amazing! Most of the dishes can be made vegan, and there are even some "secret" items that can be ordered (I noticed from browsing the online ordering). I settled for the tofu pineapple fried rice, which was amazing, and my sister got the pumpkin curry. Everything was tasty and the servers were friendly. I also felt the portions were very generous - both of us had leftovers to take home. I'll definitely be adding this place to my list the next time I'm in Portland! read more

I ordered Chicken Pad See Ew via Uber Eats. I've only had it from two other Thai restaurants. I slightly preferred it at the other restaurants. Good food, bad service. I really want to like this place. I've tried twice. The ambiance is nice, trying to look like a Thai street cart. I had a better experience eating in than ordering to go. They missed including the rice I paid extra for, and they included an ingredient that was specifically asked to be excluded, which I'm allergic to, so I couldn't even eat my meal. The coco potato appetizer was fried and came out so dark, and all stuck together in one clump. I probably won't give them a third try, unfortunately. read more

Whoever was the cook on Friday evening, 10/15 made the best spicy green beans with crispy pork belly I have ever had from this place. I stopped eating it to write this review. I go here often because the food is mostly consistent with freshness and flavor. I stopped ordering the spicy green beans with crispy pork belly because the last few times the green beans had been cooked too long, making them limp and the pork belly was not at all crispy. But man, whoever made it tonight did a phenomenal job the green beans were still firm with just enough crunch and the pork belly was perfectly crispy. The sauce was also fantastic, perfectly spicy. Other favorites from this place include their chicken ping, hoy joh, calamari, and the spicy crispy chicken basil. Although I will say the last time I had the spicy crispy basil, it had been over cooked making it tough to chew. So yeah 4/5 stars because they are mostly consistent. The egg was done to perfection, flavorful beef. My companions had a curry and a pork belly dish - wonderful! We came for lunch on a weekday. Service was decent and the food came quickly. Unlike many Thai places, their menu is actually displayed with the recommended meat in the name of the dish (e.g. shrimp pad Thai), which is kind of nice sometimes. You can easily ask for different meat or to make it vegetarian. I had the Thai binto ($14) lunch option which is three stainless steel bento boxes stacked up and buckled into a handle. Fun. It also comes with Thai iced tea, so a pretty good option for lunch. I chose the crispy basil chicken to go in it. The chicken was nicely flavored, a little spicy and a little sweet. However I would have preferred bigger/thicker pieces of chicken since most of mine were thin and a little tougher. The rest of the group enjoyed their lunches. While I wouldn't go cross town to eat here, it's a good neighborhood option in Bethany. read more
