I've been coming to this restaurant for years and it never disappoints. I'm writing another review since I don't know what happened to the one I wrote years ago when they first opened. My go to dish here is the chicken ka-pao (my all time favorite Thai dish). I've tried their other dishes too which were all good. I haven't been disappointed yet. Love their sticky rice with mango as well! This restaurant is small and cozy (with only a few tables if you want to dine in). There are only a few parking spots at the back of the restaurant, so parking can be challenging (no parking at the Flame Broiler lot or you may be towed). The staff are super friendly as well. Unfortunately, this place does not have a competent pick-up system for takeout. You pretty much have to stand in the same line with all the people ordering in-person if you place a call over the phone. There was one person who ordered via phone an hour ago but was still stuck waiting in line when she should've been able to just pick up her order. My order was 15 minutes late. Note that they have limited parking in the back alley and that parking next door in the Flame Broiler will get your car towed. As for the food itself, I ordered a Thai fried rice and Pad See Ew. It came out to a total of $24.09. What's great about the food is that they give you a lot of it. I shared my food with a family member and there was still leftovers for me to eat the next day. OMG!!! The Panang Curry and fresh rolls were AMAZING!! I must have driven by here 100 times and finally (after reading the reviews on Yelp, of course) I decided to place an order to be picked up. Ten minutes later I arrived and the order was ready! After a short ride home broke into the delivery containers. The curry was very, very flavorful and not overpowering in the least. The fresh rolls were crispy and full of flavor. Both are definite repeats on those cool winter nights when I do not feel like cooking! I will be back! When I crave pa-kow, I always order here. This is my favorite dish here. It is full of flavors, and they can actually make it spicy. (I can't eat Thai spicy, not the "American" spicy.) I get the ground beef one, and it comes with rice as well, which is great so you don't have to order a side of rice. I HIGHLY recommend this dish. Their menu has been limited due to COVID, which is a little disappointing because I really love Thai food and love a variety of dishes beyond the typical pad thai and curry. Parking is very limited. You can try to find the 2 spots in front of the restaurant on Carson or the 5 behind the store. There is an ally way right behind the restaurant off Carson to access their lot in the back. BECAREFUL not to park in the Flame Broiler lot or the lot next to Khun 9. There is even a sign in the store to advise you not to park there. I assume people got towed before? I was initially put off by the looks of the place but when I decided to give it a try for lunch the other day, I was sorry I had not tried them sooner! Every dish was great. The Green Papaya salad was my fav! A large fresh salad with a taste that can rival any of the other fancy Thai places in the area. The Ka -Pow is also another must have dish - spicy and flavorful! The Penang curry here is super tasty and perfectly spicy. The curry is creamy and comes with a bell pepper slices as Penang usually does. I ordered mine with tofu, which is fried. Perfect to share if you're not a huge eater. Comes with rice for $10! It's nice to know they don't charge extra for rice like most Thai restaurants in LA. Torrance Food Crawl #134 This restaurant is small, it has only a half dozen small tables, but seems to do most of their business with takeout. I showed up just before 3pm on a Monday, perhaps the quietest time of the week to visit a restaurant, and the serving staff were taking a break but I was able to order take out. (When walking in I was about 50-50 about eating in or taking out so that was no problem for me.) I ordered the Som Tum Salad (Green Papaya Salad), which was a cool, slightly sweet salad. There was a nice tang to the spices. Heavier than a lettuce salad, the papaya salad was still very refreshing. The Padcha (Seafood Combination) was my entree. It included mussels, squid, whitefish, shrimp, and vegetables on a bed of white rice. I ordered it with a "regular or medium spice level" and it definitely was spicy, about at the maximum level that I find comfortable. Any more heat and it would have a challenge for me. Lovely, quaint, friendly establishment. When I say quaint, I mean small but welcoming. There are tables but I honestly think the place is too small to seat that many tables they have there. For this reason, I usually do take out. Food is prepared and ready within 15 minutes. Sometimes I'll call it in ahead of time. I've tried their pad thai, pad see ew, ka-na moo krab, yellow chicken curry, and mango with sticky rice for dessert. You know it's authentic when the cooks in the back are Thai! All these dishes were pretty good. Their ka-na moo krab is roasted pork with Chinese broccoli served with steamed rice and vinegar pepper sauce, this was just ok for me 3.5 stars because the roasted pork wasn't crunchy the way I like it. Also, the mango with sticky rice wasn't the best I've had because the rice probably needed a few more minutes to cook. Was still a bit hard and crunchy. Mangoes were sweet and yummy though! Parking might be a bit difficult, there's curb parking right out front but only enough to fit one vehicle. I usually park next door at flame broiler although signs say not to. Dishes I've had: - Pad Thai (Tofu) - Musmun Curry ( no protein) - Khao Soi Gai (Tofu) Cuisine: Khao Soi Gai is a coconut milk based curry soup served with egg noodles. It is very flavorful and also filling. I ordered mine with tofu and it worked even better because there was more carbs to balance with the richness of the broth. I was curious to try their Musmun Curry because it is obviously different from their common green, yellow, & red curry. It has whole peanuts and cubes of potatoes in it and whatever choice protein. I ordered mine as a lunch combo with no protein so it came with a side of white rice, salad and a fried wonton. It was slightly sweeter than other Thai curries I've had and it was more sour. It does not usually come spicy but they can make it as spicy as possible. Their Pad Thai was okay. It wasnt the best Pad Thai I've had but it satisfied my craving. I was not able to finish the entire order in one sitting. It kept well and tasted better a couple days after. Customer Service/Decor/Parking: Both of my visits have been very pleasant. The owner(s) and staff have been very welcoming and helpful with all the questions I had. I had never tasted Musmun Curry or Khao Soi Gai, so I had a couple of questions before ordering those two dishes. They also have regulars which says a lot about a business. Stated on various reviews, sitting is limited especially for groups! They have two large tables, one outside and one inside. The inside table can only sit 4 people tops, the outside maybe 5, if there is an extra chair somewhere. There is no front street parking, only rear or residential. This joint is located right on Carson Street, a very busy street. Be careful turning into the alley way that leads to the parking, it is right off of Carson Street. DO NOT park in the Flame Broiler parking lot, they will tow your car away! Overall, Khun 9 is very welcoming and their menu has variety but not too much where it is overwhelming. Lately, I've revived something I used to do, back before my Yelp days. On my drive going home from work, I would take a different route and then stop off the first place that caught my eye, that wasn't a chain. Back then, I actually had a site that was basically a photo journal of the places I've been to. So, driving by, I have to admit, I used Yelp to find this place and I chose it because it definitely looked like a hole in the wall, not to mention the average star rating. I took a chance because there are times when the ratings let me down. However, not in this case. I really enjoyed it. First - this place is very small. Tiny or whatever you want to call it - it's not good for groups unless your group is four or less, and even then, one group of four would take up majority of the seating there. I think there were only about five or six tables and several were only two seaters. Some street parking but unless you know turn down the alley next to the restaurant (don't park in the fast food restaurant parking lot), you wouldn't know about the parking lot in back, It's not very well lit by the way. Service was great. The two women behind the counter were so friendly and nice that it made me feel like I was in their home and they were just operating a eatery out of their house. At least it's how I felt because by the time I sat down and my food was brought to my table, the place had cleared out leaving me, them and a steady stream of carry out customers. And the dish I chose, Khao Ka Moo - was inexpensive and as you can see from the pics, juicy, tender and a decent portion size for the price. I added a sparkling water to make the $10 debit card minimum. I enjoyed the sauce that accompanied the dish and this was one instance where the food was so flavorful that it didn't bother me that it wasn't hot and spicy. I cleared the plate. It ain't no Thai town boat noodle but I left totally satisfied!! :) +Small parking lot available behind the restaurant. I would suggest turning left on gramercy if you're facing west and get to the lot from the back street. +My boyfriend had the drunken noodle (pad kee mao) and I had the boat noodle and we were both happy with our meal! Boat noodle is slightly on the sweet side for me personally but I liked the soup in its own way. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the meat quality was good. Some places charge extra for chicharron but Khun 9 comes with it, so that's an added bonus +my boyfriend and I can eat super spicy and he asked the waitress in Thai to make our dishes spicy. Some restaurants still hold back on the spice just in case but Khun 9 made it decently spicy for us so we were happy campers :) +vegetarians--rejoice! They offer vegetarian dishes +Khun 9 has fruit infused water dispenser so you can help yourself with lots of yummy water on your own. +apparently you can have Khun 9 delivered to your door and eat at the comfort of your own home or at the office because they're partnered up with door dash. Came here for the first time for dinner last night, ordered the pad see ew beef (photo), beef was a little dry, but the flavor of the pad see ew was on par. I noticed they didn't use traditional soy sauce to season the noodles, instead I found little soybeans so they must be using soy bean paste. I'm not a huge fan of the saltiness of soy beans themselves, but was easily able to pick them out.. I actually like the flavor of their pad see ew as it was so mildly salted compared to other places I had it. I also ordered the calamari appetizer and the squid was not overcooked and the breading was crunchy. A little greasy, but still good--and paired with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce (was a little watery). BF ordered the yellow curry and he was pleased. We finished the meal off with the sweet sticky rice and mango--yum (photo)! The sticky rice was not too sweet and had the perfect balance of salt and sugar, and the asian mangoes they used were super duper sweet--soo good! The food here is pretty good. I love the crispy pork belly with chinese broccoli and the thai sausages. Not many other Thai places offer the sausages, so when I'm craving it, this is my spot! Unfortunately, they've started to rip off customers that buy the sausages. It's listed as 3 pieces with garnishes for $10. The last few times I have stopped by, the portion were smaller than it used to be, but I didn't mind since it was still a good amount served. I stopped by after work today for the usual order, and when I opened the sausage container, it was a huge letdown. It did not look anything like 3 sausages. I counted the end pieces and only found 2 among the scattered slices,. I understand small businesses go through hard times, but at least change the description in the menu that you no longer serve 3. I'm happy to pay a little more if needed, just don't be sneaky! We were so hungry that we just wanted to eat at the moment so I didn't think to take a picture before digging in. First off, my opinion when we walked in was it's so small. There was maybe only enough seats for 10 people inside and 4-6 outside. But regardless of what I saw I always base on my experience and how good the food was! I thought this place had good reviews and was close so why not. Greeted upon arrival and we were first brought waters right when we sat. Ordered the Tum Kha Gai soup and Pad see ew with two Thai Teas. Received our food after 10-15 min which was awesome and also delicious! Towards the end, my fiance and myself had to try the sticky rice with mango and it was good but too sweet! Overall it's worth it for their service and speediness. Only downside is the limited amount of seating inside and as of parking I'm the back. Recently I finally had two opportunities to come here for quick lunches and overall this is actually a pretty good Thai restaurant. Khun 9 Thai Kitchen is located right next to The Flame Broiler and you can ONLY park in the rear (absolutely no parking in the Flame Broiler's parking lot). There are only 6 tables and the restaurant always close between 3 PM to 4 PM. You find a table & order first, then you can pay AFTER you finish the meal. Menu: Not only will you find typical pan fried noodles (Pad Thai and Pad See Ew) and curries, there are also few specialty rice dishes like ka na moo krob, ka pow, khao mun gai (Hainanese chicken rice), etc. *** Thai Iced Tea ($2.50): Half of cup was filled ice, but it was a very refreshing Thai iced tea and the sweetness was spot. It was definitely one of the best Thai iced tea I have had in the SoCal. Pad See Ew (beef, $9): A very unique pad see ew (in terms of seasoning) because it had a bit of lemony / vinegary aftertaste. Other than somewhat greasy noodle, it was a pretty good dish. Ka Pow (beef, mild spiciness, $9): This dish felt a bit like Taiwanese minced pork rice / Filipino's tapsilog with different seasoning, few sliced onion, and no sauce.
