    9. Edamame
    Maansi S.

This isn't a bad spot for a quick lunch in the city! Like the other reviews say, there isn't much seating inside so you're better off ordering the food as takeout. Also please keep in mind if you're ordering sushi that it ONLY comes with soy sauce. You'll have to order the other sauces separately if you wanted them with your sushi. The green monster roll, avocado&cumber roll, and edamame were very filling for a lunch! The edamame were cooked really well! The sushi didn't taste bad, and their size was good, but I've also had better sushi in other places where the rolls didn't fall apart. Overall not a horrible spot in the city though. The price to proportion of everything is good.

Stopped in during my lunch break and the lunch special was good. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but solid for a quick lunch and the order was ready right on time. It hit the spot and worked perfectly for a fast meal in the middle of the day.

    58. Spicy Tuna Roll & Spicy Salmon Roll
    Lucie N.

SUSHI Spicy Tuna and Spicy Salmon Rolls - both the rules were alright. They had sriracha and spicy Mayo drizzled on top. As far as roll construction, it was a bit less on the tight side so the rolls came apart. It wasn't really spicy at all for the spicy tuna or salmon. Fish is pretty alright quality. Pretty basic, decent roll. VIBES This place is very much so a grab and go. There is some seating available that consists of two high tables and some stools along the wall. I went around 1 PM on a Wednesday and it was packed with people coming in and out to pick up orders and people sitting and waiting for their sushi. SERVICE Service was alright. Quick to get orders out but not too much interaction

It's a cute little shop, they move quick so you can be in and out or you can dine in. The prices are really good to be located in a downtown area. -- I'm visiting for work. You'll see on the pic of the container what I ordered. I really wanted to enjoy it, but I feel like because they are so quick they didn't handle my food with care. The sushi was falling apart as I was picking it up. It was like the rice was not sticking together and the seaweed was like easily punctured so when I picked it up it would smash and break apart. The yummy yum was okay, but I'm not a fan of imitation crab meat. Which ironically, the lam back had real crab meat and it was fishy. So crazy right. See pics. I feel like I'd go back, because of the price but I'd need them to fix my issue. I do not like messy food. I saw someone else's look better than mine, so idk if it's based on the type of roll or what.

Delicious and affordable! So many rolls to choose from. Order takes max 10 minutes, quick in and out establishment. Gyozas were tasty and the Miami & Volcano roll were great. As someone else mentioned the rolls do fall apart but that didn't bother me much.

I will keep this short. Young dude with long hair, pleasant greeting, easy ordering to go. What I thought I ordered; classic salmon skin handroll and dragon roll. What I got? I know it was to-go buT EVERY SINGLE PIECE i tried to pick up with my chopsticks fell apart before I could ingest it. Everything including eel sauce was b l a n d. I know I am in pittsburgh but dang; being downtown my first time...'PA is RELATIVELY near a coastline... uhhh I ended up just picking off the avocado, some cucumbers and some dryyy salmon. A TON of rice was blanketing the bottom; tossed it. Wasabi was weirdly enough the "best part". Inside is just a small, couple of tables and counter area if you absolutely needed or wanted to dine-in. Won't be back sowwy.

I ordered take out and wasn't impressed. Good value for the price but not great quality sushi. You get what you pay for! They do have some fun specialty rolls though.

I stopped by yesterday to grab a quick lunch for me and a friend. It's a small spot with not a lot of seating (I counted 10 seats) that does a brisk takeout business. I ordered three specialty rolls for me and a friend and the food came out fairly quickly. The sushi itself was pretty good and was about $41 for three specialty rolls before tip. I would definitely come back and order again!

    121. Eight Piece Shrimp Tempura Roll

Cute spot in market square that I never knew existed until my friend mentioned it! It's down a side street so it's easy to miss, but definitely not something you'd want to miss out on! The sushi was DELICIOUS! Prepared super quickly and for a reasonable price. The person who took my order was polite and did a great job taking orders. I will definitely be back again, and I 100% recommend you get their shrimp tempura roll!!

They made my roll really fast! It was good, just a basic California roll. The staff is nice. The shop is kind of small but it does have seating.

Amazing! Everything felt fresh! Quality was 10/10 and prices where really good too. Very quick! it's downtown so parking is not available near. Place is small but has seating, great for takeout!

Messy cutting + comparison of thickness on scallops

I've gotten sushi and sashimi from here multiple times through delivery apps. The first two times, it was great. However, this is now the second time I've had a less than satisfactory experience. The first time my friend and I were very ill within 2 hours of eating our rolls. We concluded that it was because of the rice considering she got a veg roll and no raw fish. This time, the sashimi that I ordered was terrible. It was thrown into a styrofoam container and looked terrible. Additionally, the cut on the fish is terrible. It is incredibly inconsistent and makes eating the sashimi and unpleasant experience. For example, some parts of the salmon are see through, while others are far thicker. This is indicative of an inexperienced or careless chef. They also shorted me one border of hamachi which is not cool. Overall, I got an unpleasant fishy smell when opening my box, the cut was ridiculously bad, and the quality of the fish today was subpar. Used to be my favorite place for sashimi, but has consistently gone down hill. I will not be returning and I will warn others to say away.

    Crab roll and Playboy Roll
    Kathleen C.

I read the reviews and saw they were pretty mixed. But tried it anyway. I got the crab roll and playboy roll with the seaweed salad as take out. The seaweed salad is good. Like anywhere else. Little bit of heat but not hot. The rolls were like others said. The rice is heavy and distributed unevenly. The crab roll didn't have a lot of flavor. You will need the soy sauce. They are pretty skimpy on until sauces. The playboy roll is ok. The tempura on the shrimp is heavy and at times was thicker than the shrimp. Sauce was skimpy. Overall, average. Probably won't try again.

I've been generally impressed by the quality of the sushi. We ordered takeout this time, and everything was extremely well packaged and presented. In terms of the food, we focussed on fairly standard maki rolls: a spicy salmon roll and a spicy California roll. Both were very nicely done. We also tried the veg farm roll, and that was a nice vegetable forward option. Not life changing, but nicely done. We also opted for a vegetable poke bowl, and that was also good. Basically the same combination of vegetables as the veg farm roll, but in a bowl format. The bowl was good, but it was lacking some sort of sauce or glaze that might have pulled things together. It was easy enough to toss on some condiments of our own, but the bowl could have been better. Overall, I this is my favorite sushi destination in Squirrel Hill. It's very clear that the owners are invested in turning out a high quality experience, and that's exactly the type of business I like to support.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

My usual order is the chicken katsu bento box, which comes with a good portion of crunchy sliced chicken katsu, rice, two dumplings, a California roll, and miso soup. It feels like a solid, filling meal with enough variety to make it satisfying. The only downside with my most recent takeout order was the sauce placed in the middle of the container. I'm not sure exactly what it was, and after tasting it, it wasn't really for me. Because of the layout of the takeout container, some of it spilled into the rice and rolls. Next time, I'd probably ask for that sauce on the side in a separate container.

The restaurant is located right on Mt Washington, giving a good view of the city. The interior looks appropriate for a sushi restaurant, but due to the massive windows lacked the darker vibe of other upscale restaurants. I've been to hundreds of sushi spots and the interior was merely average. Otaru seems to struggle with its identity. It needs to either commit to being an upscale restaurant or relax and simply be a quality one. The wait staff were kind and prompt, but at times appeared they may be less experienced. We were brought hot (paper) towels and edamame. We ordered the fried tako balls as an app. I personally don't prefer tako and found it very dense and chewy and the overall flavors were too undeveloped. The hand rolls were well filled and were easy to eat due to being more of a taco configuration than a true hand roll. The nori was not too tough, lending to a pleasant experience. The nigiri and sashimi were also good. The nigiri were good, but not as elevated as another upscale sushi spot in the city. They were still very good, but not quite excellent. They either need a bit more development or to be relaxed and served as two per order and the price adjusted slightly upward. If you take one thing from this review, let it be this. The yellowtail jalepeno cups were astonishing. By far this was the most well executed dish I have ever eaten and the best sushi dish I've had. They appear to be wrapped in toasted sesame seed wrappers. If you've had Hapi mixed crackers they give the same great flavor of the "fried chicken" pieces but with yuzu vinaigrette and the umami of the fish. I will certainly be back solely because of how good they were.
