I went with a friend to check out Kilcoyne's Friday night fish fry. They offer an all-you-can-eat cod dinner for $17.75 or lake perch for $27. So ... cod it was! The cod was tasty and came with mixed veggies, coleslaw and a choice of fries, tater tots or red potatoes. I chose the potatoes and really enjoyed them. We arrived at 4:30 and snagged the last table in the very small dining area. The bar was pretty full, too. As we ate, a line began to form at the door for people waiting for tables. We probably would have stayed longer and eaten a little more fish if not for the number of people standing basically right behind us waiting to eat. All-you-can-eat is a great offer, but with only a handful of tables inside, it's probably not the best business strategy. And honestly, the plate had a good amount of food on it, so we didn't *need* more anyway. Kilcoyne's is tiny and has a better menu than I'd expect for what seems like a dive bar. I'd try the fish fry again, or maybe something else from the menu. However, I would not be willing to stand in the crowded doorway waiting for a table. read more

Yum perch fuss fry, the batter is sublime comes out piping hot. Red skin potatoes crispy on one side with a bit of garlic accompanied by steamed broccoli and cauliflower . Served with a sweet bun whipped butter and a tart coleslaw. The batter is wonderful, better than tempura . I asked the bartender perch or cod, hands down he ordered perch. It's wonderful. I can't get enough of that batter. That's all you can eat. I just ordered one platter and my boyfriend who hardly eats kept eating off my plate, but they're still plenty for two people with only one portion. I have to come back when I'm off on Fridays. It's really good neighborhood local bar if you like fried perch come here on Friday. read more

Stopped by for a couple hours as my son had an event nearby. This place is amazing! The food is solid and all from scratch. I had the Saturday night special - fried chicken. Half a bird and 2 sides for less than $14. Seemed like everyone there was a local. And they were all exceptionally friendly. I made instant friends will all the old timers. Sat at the bar to watch a Cubs game... there were groups of friends having a beer, couples having dinner, and a very attentive staff (shout out to Jenna and Julie!). Watered down drinks and 27.95 for perch. More than a restaurant Perch was ok. But not frozen vegetables.

The ambience and food is mediocre. I would not recommend this restaurant for St. Patrick's Day or any other time.

I know I wrote a one or two star review for this place a year or so ago due to a snotty crabby bar tender/server. Even though I like the food here I said I was going to give this place a rest due to that. Hey YELP where is that review? Anyway I did go back recently with my wife and brother who was in town and wanted a fish fry and did not want to travel. Since Kilcoyne's is under 10 minutes from our home we decided to come back here and I'm pleased to say the crabby smart aleck tender/server was not there, so thankful. We got a table in the much brighter remolded dining room and was warmly greeted by the server who promptly took our bar order and asked if we were here for the fish fry which we told her we were. Even though the server was working the room of around ten tables by herself she was very nice and efficient. Our beers were always replaced and when we needed more fish it was brought out promptly. It was a very pleasant dinner and it was also very good. The coleslaw is killer and so is the fried perch. I think cod is offered as well but we all had the perch. I like the choice of fries, red potatoes and/or a veggie medley. The reason for four stars over five was the bill was screwed up. The bartender fixed it but it took a couple times. I'll probably come back again for the fish fry and the all you can eat corned beef on St Patty's week. Cheers! read more

A friend of mine wanted to try Kilcoyne Redwood Inn, as he had driven by many times and had not been inside. Kilcoyne Redwood Inn is the very definition of a neighborhood bar. After I walked through cigarette smoke to get into the establishment, the first person to greet me was a regular. I felt very uncomfortable walking into a poorly lit tavern with that type of greeting. During my time there there were patrons at the bar yelling at each other, which just added to my unease. I asked the sever to sit in the back, away from the bar. The menu is very small. The kitchen was in the middle and visible. The good news was that the kitchen looked clean. I had the Bacon, Bacon, Bacon L & T Sandwich (our famous bacon sandwich stuffed with crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes, creamy mayo and an insane amount of delicious bacon). While the sandwich did contain an insane amount of bacon and a generous amount of mayo, the bread was brunt and was very dry and stiff. There was an upcharge to French fries. The French fries were unseasoned and I had to add salt (something I haven't done in a long time). Our server was the only one serving in the entire restaurant, so the service was slow. I will not go back to Kilcoyne Redwood Inn and cannot recommend this bar and restaurant. read more

This is one of the most chill neighborhood bars I've found on the North Shore, and the food is also good. I've been there several times, after a friend who goes there regularly recommended it. The first time we went was on a busy weekend night. We were seated at the only table available, which was fine, and were also told we could sit at the bar. We had sandwiches -- I had a patty melt and my husband had a burger. Both were quite good. Then we moved into the bar to have drinks, and that's where we really got a taste of the vibe here. The bartenders are friendly, as are the other regular patrons. I've had some great chats here with people who just happened to sit down next to us. My Manhattans are always prepared perfectly (thanks, Julie!), and my husband usually likes one of the beers they have on tap. We haven't been to their Friday fish fry yet (we've heard the lines are crazy long waiting, which isn't our thing) but we hear that's fantastic. Maybe one of these Fridays we'll get our courage up to either go really early, or go and wait. (One more note, after reading some of the negative reviews from those who've panned the place because they wouldn't let you take your fish fry leftovers with you, that's pretty standard for all-you-can-eat meals. You should only order as much as you can eat there, otherwise they'd go broke if they let people order an all-you-can-eat-here-and-at-home-later portion Please don't ruin it for the rest of us. The employee has probably had to regularly rip containers out of rude peoples' hands, so I can't fault her on this one. Well run local spot that reminds me of the north woods. Not really a supper club, but feels Wisconsiny. Enjoyed the Friday fish fry, we were lucky to get the last available table, and the last parking spot. Ate and drank well here, clean and homey. Absolutely love this place. Best fish fry on Friday nights. Anywhere in the northwest suburbs. We brought our sister in law from Mercer,Wisconsin and she absolutely loved the perch! She said it was better than any fish she has had in Mercer. Could not believe the size of the portions and also that it was all you can eat. Phenomenal food! I travel with work almost every week and this was the best meal I've had in a while. I got the mozzarella sticks as an app and they were perfectly cooked. I was deciding between the ribs and fish and the waitress - who was excellent - recommended the ribs. She was right. They were truly fall off the rib but had thick, tender and moist amounts of meat on the bones. I got the onion rings as the side and they were great as well. I highly recommend the food and atmosphere here. The environment is friendly and accepting which is really nice to experience nowadays. read more

My first time eating in at Kilcoyne's pub. Really enjoyed an incredible Irish brisket dinner for St Patrick's Day. A delicious and healthy portion. One of the best Irish Brisket dinners I have had in years. The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was great fun, really festive, lots of St Patrick's Day revelry. I wasn't expecting this place to be a "bar" in the front and a little cramped in the back but they make it work. We went for the fish fry Friday. It is a great deal - unlimited fried fish - cod and perch, and a side. The cod was my favorite, so so good! The fries, tater tots and onion rings were great! There was a steak special - $30 for 24 oz ribeye. I ordered it and it was cooked perfectly - medium rare. It was delicious. Our waitress was also very good. She was attentive and very friendly! Great neighborhood spot. They have a small dining area. Tables are really crammed into a tiny area. It's an effort getting in and out of your chair. The bar is packed. That being said, fish fry is delicious! The cod is hot, crispy, and delicious. It's served with red skin potatoes, vegetables, cole slaw, and a dinner roll. The cost is very reasonable. This reminds me of Cheers where everyone knows your name. If they could fix the crammed dining room, I'd give this place 5 stars. But for now, 2 stars for atmosphere, and 5 for food. read more

Service was TERRIBLE!!! We waited 45+ minutes for a table and never got one we ended up sitting at the bar in their uncomfortable bar stools. We then had to wait another 20 minutes just to get our order taken!! The best part was when we where leaving the waitress said we can't take any food home in a box and we thought she was sarcastic because every other restaurant allows you too, so I grabbed a box which they conveniently left out right in the front. After we paid and were waiting for our card I put the food into the box and the waitress comes over and began to reach around me ELBOWING ME in the process!!! She then attempted to grab the box and rip it out of my hands yelling at me saying that I'm disrespectful and my people ( I am African American man/Black man ) aren't welcome here!!! Absolutely the most cruel and unusual treatment I have ever had from a restaurant in my life and I will never come back to this wretched place and honestly this has scarred my experience with people who resemble her.
