Had this for desert last night 9/11/2013...being it was off season i am sure that is why there was not much of a line. I had the Monster Waffle sundae... strawberry ...with Cinnamon cookie frozen yogurt.. Waffle was good.. a nice little crunch... until the syrup and yogurt got to it and made it soggy,,,didnt taste much in the line of cinnamon cookie in it.. but it was good over all...enough for two people.. my wife also had the vanilla monster waffle sundae with marshmallow topping... neither of us finished it. Over all... good... another place that didnt make me say OMG i HAVE to go back.... but we certainly will not shy away from it...I wouldnt say it is the WORLDS BEST ... as advertised on their sign... For a place that advertises just custard and fries, they have a lot of other stuff, and guess what? The other stuff is actually really good. The custard was decent custard, but nothing to rant and rave about. The fries were pretty good, very much what you would expect, really. The hot food is where this place wins. I have a wrap with some sorta chipotle sauce on it and wow! WOW! The chicken was on this wrap was juicy and thick, and the wrap was delicious... Sometimes I let you all get inside my head. My life revolves around, "what will my Yelpers say?!?!?" I can't have you telling me what to do all the time! I need to branch out! Try new things! I need to be free to be me!!! Whew! Okay. So, I was torn about going to KD's Frozen Custard & Beach Fries. I just felt like my Yelp Homies just weren't feelin' it so I was going to pass. I'm glad I ignored you like I ignore telemarketers, because this joint was bangin'!! My family and I arrived after a pretty gnarly rain storm passed over the island. We pulled into the parking lot and, seeing only the outside picnic-style tables, parked and put it in reverse to leave. I said, "Why wouldn't they have indoor seating?" Just then a friendly family from WV pulled up right next to us and I asked Bubba, "Do they have seating in there?" "Yep! Right inside," he answered in his friendly southern drawl. SWEET!!! Frozen custard for moi!! Oh, and my family too! We mosied on up to the counter and ordered a Kill Devil Burger for the big guy (which is essentially your ticket to hell on the Glutton Train), and three KD's Better Burgers for me and the Twinks. We ordered them a regular fry and chili cheese fries for us, because we pay the doggone bills, okay? We each got a soda as well. Our total (for dinner) came to roughly $40. Our meals were delivered quickly and man, oh, man!!! That was some good eating. The burgers tasted like that burger your Mom used to fry up in the pan that made you mad because it wasn't a McDonald's burger. It was good. Really, it was so good that I just said "good" three times in two sentences. The chili cheese fries were yummy as well, although it seemed to have too much mustard or ground mustard in the chili for my liking. It was still better than a lot of the chili's I've had, so I highly recommend. So let's cut to the chase. We went to KD's to eat the frozen custard. I totally respect the reviews of the Wisconsinites in the house. You may very well have the market cornered on legit frozen custard. Since I'm a Yankee, I couldn't care less about authentic frozen custard so this custard was the bomb! The brownie was nice and fudgy, exploding with great chocolate flavor. Perfect REAL whipped cream and hot fudge. I had to be a good wife and share my brownie sundae with vanilla frozen custard with my hubby. But you best believe I made sure my elbow was gut checking him when he got a little too spoon happy. The kiddos got a cone each of chocolate and vanilla and couldn't finish them. Lightweights. THAT total came to $12. Did we just pay $52 bucks for dinner and dessert at a beach burger shack? Yep. Do I care? Nope. Because it was THAT good. The only thing I'd change is more seating and clean up the tables a little better. Other than that, keep it up! read more

Locals opened it up and many friends and family have worked there ever since. During the prime of the summer be prepared for a wait. Parking is limited and sometimes the line is literally to the street. Tonight I got some chocolate custard. Delish. There are usually "flavors of the day" and today's were vanilla, chocolate, and lemon. You can sample them too. The menu is a giant board about the windows where you "order here" and "pick up here." Better be listening too for when they call your number. It's been a while, but over the years I've enjoyed their custard, fries, hot dogs, "butterburgers," and bbq. All have been tasty and happy. If ice cream is like cocaine, the custard here is like crack. The sugar and fat double high is way more intense. It's like someone took already creamy ice cream and added a few sticks of butter and a side of bacon into it. Yes... It's like that. We read the tips and we decided to try the Cookie Monster. I found the custard and cookie to be extremely sweet but I could just be having an off palate day. We stopped by here on a busy Tuesday night. The line was long but the workers are fast and efficient. We didn't have to wait long to order and our treats were ready soon after. I got a vanilla waffle cone for myself with strawberry sauce on top and a regular chocolate cone for my daughter with rainbow sprinkles. The portions are generous and the frozen custard is delicious. Very good custard that is rich and full of flavor. Food was good too. But the menu is small and they were out of something at lunchtime :( The real problem is 3 flavors and I have had far superior custard in Wisconsin (perhaps that isn't fair given the importance of the dairy industry in Wisconsin) That said I went back and if you are in the mood for custard and vanilla or chocolate are your thing, it's worth stopping in. Get the onion, lettuce, tomato-you will need it. Pass on the Texas cheese steak, horrible. Tough chewy meat (very little of it) mostly big white roll, no lettuce or anything fresh to help wash it down. Great floats. Like the orange with vanilla. Skip the waffle Sunday, wasn't a fresh waffle as shown on wall. (Go home toast ego and put scoop of French vanilla on it). Other Sunday's are better. Three flavors of the day. I had the mint chocolate chip...very thick and creamy. Suggest you get it in a cup if it's hot outside. We ate the frozen custard while we waited for sandwiches and fries. Pulled pork with slaw was great. Freebird chicken sandwich was great. Had a little bit of a bite, but not too spicy. Hand-cut fries were lightly salted. If you are taking away, don't forget to put ketchup in your box before you leave. The only bad thing was both Coke and Diet Coke were watered down. Kids said the lemonade and orange Fanta were OK. Otherwise, would have been 5-star. All of the food we had was top-notch. We almost went there a second time in the same day because the custard and fries would make a good snack. The burgers were good but a little light on the bun to meat ratio but overall above average for what you would expect from a walk up window outdoor joint. Fries were perfect. It's a great size cut, fresh cut style and cooked crisp in good oil. Just awesome. Excellent stop for a burger lunch though Outer Banks meals are generally pricey. I opted for the Kill Devil Burger which is double meat, bacon, cheese and all fixins. I loved every bite, and would even rank it above the same solid concept down the street at Five Guys. The service was very friendly also. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is that the wicked waffle for dessert was a bit of a weak link in the chain. The chocolate custard wedged between two waffles sounds like a good idea on paper. However, the waffles reminded me of generic Eggos. I would still go back for the burgers though. 4/5 read more
