Custard, burger and dog were all good but the beach fries were a disappointment and considering they are 50% of the name, I have to deduct significantly. I admit I had to Google beach fries but all descriptions I found indicated "crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside", but these fries were oil soaked and limp throughout. I had visited this eastablishment with my wife several years ago and remembered it fondly. When I return to the area with my adult son, I thought that I should visit before leaving to return home. The custard was first rate and exceeded my expectations. There have been complaints about the few choices that are available but I lucked out with a great choice. The burgers and the beach fries were very average. The burger does not compare well to the Five Guys just down the street and the fries were mediocre and over-priced for the quality and quanity. As a Marylander, I rate Thrashers fires in OC the best in the world with Five Guys right up there but with no ambience. That was worth it, but they offered a choice of cheese (picked provalone) only later to find out it was $.75 extra :( boo. Beach Fries were okay. Liked that the skins were on. Needed salt, though, and flavor in general. The Wicked Waffle was two dinky square toaster waffles that got gross and soggy quick with the scoop of custard. Would not recommend. Hurricane was a bit disappointing for the price. The only thing that was really worth it was the Cookie Monster. Just get that, its great! Burger would have been tastier if I was made aware of the cheese upcharge. :( All and all, just okay. Will know how to order better next time. read more

They sell quarts of their ice cream that you can redeem your card for! With outdoor only seating they can get pretty crowded on a hot day, but it's worth the wait in line! We tried the Cookie Monster sundae and there was more cookie and whipped cream (from a can) than custard. Menu states cookies are homemade but they definitely were not. We have been going here for outstanding custard for years. So this year was no different. We went last night and need to say it was NOT what we remembered. One daughter got the brownie Sunday which she was SO looking forward to and the brownie did not taste homemade, the custard had an odd consistency and literally had no flavor. My other daughter had the Cookie sundae and same thing. The chocolate cookies were not homemade and the custard was extremely runny and no flavor . The other daughter got a hurricane with peanutbutter cups and there were so few peanut butter cups you couldn't taste or see them and she had to eat it with a straw. I went to grab some milkshakes for my family after a long day at the beach. The parking and seating were very limited. I got three milkshakes and two chili cheese dogs. Being by myself I asked for a carrier for the shakes and they didn't have any. There are two windows that are giving out orders by number and when mine was called they only gave me the shakes. I was told I had to go to the other window for my food. Total wait time from arrival to receiving food was about 40 minutes. The shakes were pretty good but not outstanding. The chili cheese dogs were awful. The chili was tastless. The onions were red onions, which I personally would never put on a hotdog, and they had been sitting a while and tasted bad. Not impressed at all. Stopped by here on a Sunday night on a search for ice cream and was very disappointed to find only 3 flavors available; chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry cheesecake. None of the cookie/brownie/sundae combinations appealed to me so I chose plain chocolate. Wasn't anything special. My son had the banana split and he described the pineapple sauce as being less than tasty. My girlfriend had a cookie creation and found the cookie to be stale and obviously store bought. The shakes were not thick. Normally we avoid chain resaurants since these are all over the country and prefer to try the local fare. In this case you should drive a little further down the road and stop at Dairy Queen where the quality and selection is a lot better. read more

Whenever I visit the Outer Banks I have to come to Kill Devil Custard at least 2 or 3 times. They make the best custard I have ever tasted. It's unbelievably creamy, the perfect consistency, and the flavor is outstanding. They offer multiple flavors, which change daily and have tons of things to choose from (sundaes, milkshakes, waffle cones, plain cups). My favorite when I want something beyong the basic cup of vanilla is the cookie monster sundae (made with the fresh baked chocolate chip cookie and hot fudge, topped with whipped cream and a cherry). But honestly more times than not I just get a plain cup of vanilla, since its the best custard I've ever had. read more
