Our experience at Killa was a pleasant surprise. Located in the soaring industrial space that used to house the venerable Current Seafood & Oyster, Killa presents Peruvian fare with a Japanese influence. We chose a table on their lovely patio on a temperate summer evening. I kicked off the evening with an excellent pisco sour. We ordered a ceviche and the lomo saltado. The lomo contained a much better quality of beef (filet) that one typically uses in this classic dish. The portions were generously sized; we ended up taking home some leftovers. The dessert list was appealing, but we were just too full---they'll have to wait for another visit. Service was very good: our waiter was exuberantly friendly, if a bit forgetful. Our dinner (2 mains, a bottle of sparkling water, and a cocktail) ran us approximately $175 with tax and tip, so this will be more of a special occasion restaurant. Nevertheless, we definitely will return to enjoy more Peruvian-Japanese seafood! read more

First time coming here and this place did not disappoint. We ended up wanting to try a bit of everything from their menu so we did not got an entree. Majority of everything we got we loved. My favorite was the scallion gratin. Then it was the killa ceviche. I liked that it wasn't fishy and had more of a refreshing taste. Their pork belly Bao's were delicious as well. Their sushi was okay I think I enjoyed mostly everything else. Yes the place is a little pricey but I did think that everything we got was worth it. I do want to come and try their lunch menu. Overall I enjoyed coming here. It was a nice upscale restaurant. Service was good and food came out at a reasonable time. read more

Fancy food with a unique twist on Japanese and Peruvian food. Was it worth the cost though? Ambiance: Super beautiful space with plenty of seating. Street parking only so take that into consideration. Service: Quick and friendly. Food came out fairly fast as well. Food: For a party of 4, the server recommended 3 apps and 1 entree per person. We got the crab causa, mushroom anticuchos, ceviche pituco, acevichado nigiri (x2), lomo saltado, and chilean seabass. Plating was beautiful, everything tasted fresh and the sauces were pretty good. Honestly though, everything was just OK. Nothing outstanding or really worth noting for a restaurant of this caliber and price. Overall, decent food but I definitely think you could get better out there especially with the pricing. read more

Killa Nikkei positions itself as an upscale Peruvian restaurant, and with the prices they charge, I expected a few more upgraded basics. For starters, the paper menus were pretty worn and honestly a bit gross. We sat outside and there was pigeon poop everywhere. For a nicer restaurant, that's something they should really manage better--maybe bird decoys or something to keep the pigeons away. Food-wise, the ceviche was good, but it came as more of a ceviche salad. It didn't include chips or plantains like you'd typically expect, which made it feel a little incomplete. We also tried the Inti sushi roll, which unfortunately wasn't my favorite. The flavor was both fishy and smoky at the same time, and the salmon mousse was a bit overpowering. My favorite Peruvian dish is normally Lomo Saltado, so I was excited to try theirs. It was good. The potatoes were smoky, there were way too many onions, and it needed a lot more rice. At $45, that felt pretty hard to justify. Overall, there were some positives, but for the price and the upscale vibe they're going for, I expected a more polished experience. This will probably be a one-and-done visit for me. read more

Killa Nikkei is a great addition to the downtown dining scene, especially in the space that used to be Current--it feels fresh, modern, and a little elevated. The ambiance is stylish and unique, with a cool fusion vibe that blends upscale with approachable. Service was smooth and attentive throughout lunch. The food was overall really good with a few small misses. The burger was amazing--juicy, flavorful, but I wish it came with a lot more of the pickled carrots and pickles because they really made the dish. The poke bowl was good as well, slightly on the sweeter side than expected, but still enjoyable. We went for lunch, so we didn't get to experience the full dinner menu, which looks much more extensive with larger entrées. Overall, a really solid spot with great flavor and a fun atmosphere--definitely worth trying, especially to come back and explore the full menu next time. read more

A new fusion restaurant hits SLC ! Peruvian and Japanese fusion was such a joy to try. The environment has beautiful mood lighting and felt elegant. However we got sat in the upper level...which failed to have lighting, had strange blinds, few decorations, and the AC system was directly blowing on me. It felt like an area that is overflow and didn't have much thought. Our meal was well balanced, beautifully plated and delicious! I found some of the cooking of my steak pieces in my meal to be inconsistent so that was a bit of a disappointment. These meals create great mesh between the peruvian and japanese meals. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to differentiate the traditional foods and flavors in each plate - even with the great mixes. The pricing is definitely high end and with the great service, it felt logical. I would visit again for a night where I want elegance and elevation. Just tried Killa Neiki in SLC newly opened and absolutely stunning inside. The space is beautifully decorated with a high-end, sophisticated vibe, and street parking was easy. We tried a variety of dishes and overall the food was flavorful and thoughtfully presented. The ceviche dishes in particular were very tasty and fresh. That said, I do want to share an important note. I informed our waiter of a peanut allergy ahead of time, but unfortunately I had a severe allergic reaction while eating. When I brought it to their attention, the staff was kind and responsive, and mentioned it may have been due to salt contamination. After looking back at photos, I later noticed the dish appeared to be garnished with peanuts, which I unfortunately didn't catch in the moment. Overall, it's a great new spot with beautiful ambiance and strong flavors just something to be extra mindful of in the future for guests with food allergies. read more

I have been here 2 times. Some good things: The space and the music. Waiters are nice. Some of the bad: The location is utterly impossible for parking. Plan and be prepared. Food takes forever to come out, and the kitchen was slow both times. The tuna was fishy both times. We have gotten various things, and if you get any of their marinated finish items or the toast...fishy. Oh yes, and we did order the ceviche the 2nd time which was $10 cheaper than the dish they brought out that we DID NOT order nor ask for...that was pretty annoying. Lomo was my favorite thing the first time. The 2nd time the meat was very VERY chewy. I think if we look at value, quality, timeliness of food coming out...there are probably quite a few other places to go and spend your money. read more

This was kinda controversial experience, so I'll go over the good and the bad. The good: - food quality was good, but some dishes were great, some were okay - the drinks were good but their signature drink is overpriced for what it is, it's just served in a fancy lit up ball - our server was very good and explain everything in detail The bad: - we were seated at a table that was close to the entrance and every time someone walked in or out it was really cold so we basically had to sit with our jackets on the entire time. I don't understand why the table is even there. - there were two instances where they would bring two portions of the same food even though we ordered just one. A lovely new addition to the SLC food scene! The vibe is on point- the booths offer a level of comfort and privacy making it very easy to have conversations while still being able to hear the music. The presentation of the food is excellent- every detail was clearly well thought out. For ambience and service alone, I would give it 5/5. The only reason I lowered the rating was the vegetarian options were quite limited and a little lacking in flavor. They were well presented- but for the price point and small plate size, I expected the food to be more flavorful. The ingredients were definitely fresh - no complaint there. We'll definitely go back and try it again, but hoping in the interim the dishes we got will get a little more flavor. read more

Service was excellent from start to finish I thought the ceviche was excellent. The mains for me were a bit underwhelming. I had the special Peruvian dish. I just didn't find it super flavorful. I live in the neighborhood and I was hoping to have a place that I would want to go as a staple on my rotation. I don't think this is it. It's nowhere close the food at Oquirrh, Arlo or Wildwood. Was really excited to try Killa after hearing about the concept and hype behind it. Unfortunately, it fell flat. Starting with the service: the staff was friendly enough, but took an eternity to take our food order. It was busy, so I can overlook it if the food was great. The food was just ok. Scallops were incredible, but the truffle sushi, filet mignon, ceviche were all mid. Which is fine, but for those prices I expect a premium dish. read more

This place is niceeeeeeee. Our server was super nice and knowledgeable about the menu! In case you didn't know, Killa is a Japanese Peruvian fusion restaurant. Similar to Aker, although this place has more Peruvian options imo. Best thing on the menu imo is the Chilean seabass which was huge and so flaky! The drinks are fun but nothing to write home about. Bright vibrant flavors, fresh fish. Delicious. The grilled octopus was rubbery (get the steak). Service and ambiance felt very desperate and panicky. People can sense your tension and it doesn't matter how good the food is, it makes for a bad experience. Hope they can pull out of it, but it seems like a bad start. read more

Reservations for Valentine's Day went through as planned. Seated promptly on arrival. Took a long while to see our waiter. Finally ordered a bottle of bubbly and some food. Food came out semi quickly. Table next to us waited 45 mins for their first item. The Acevichada Toast was fishy. Tasted off. The ceviche was delicious. Enjoyed the Lomo Saltado. Went to Killa with some friends and had an amazing experience!! The restaurant is so beautiful and the food is AMAZING. We tried a lot of stuff and everything was so so good! Octopus anticucho, ceviche killa and the scallops are a MUST. Chocolate torte and 3 leches were incredibles!! Ate here tonight - giving it 4 stars for the following: atmosphere is good (almost identical to current), service was absolutely outstanding- I wish Luca could work at every restaurant I go to, and the food was good/great. There are some dishes that were just absolutely amazing while some were just so so. Must haves include the ceviche killa, scallops gratin- both were truly amazing and something I haven't eaten before. We had a few other apps and split a main, and all say is that they were good but there seems to be an under tone of sweetness to almost every ddish.Im not sure if that's a Peruvian element- but took me a bit by surprise. read more

Killa Nikkei First, you should know something about me: I'm a very cheap bastard. My wife, a Peruvian native, and I recently celebrated our anniversary by driving from Logan down to Salt Lake City just to visit this restaurant. We both cook at home. She cooks out of love; I cook because it saves money. So I'll freely admit that when I first glanced at the menu prices, I had to bite my tongue. I didn't want to ruin the evening, but I quickly gave up searching for anything I'd call "affordable." My sweetheart asked what I wanted. "No, no," she said with a smile. So I set the menu down, gave her a peck on the cheek, and asked her to order for me instead. We had invited her daughter's family and my wife's sister as well, eight mouths to feed in total. After the usual happy confusion of a large table ordering, our very patient and pleasant waiter headed off with the list. Soon our drinks and plates began arriving, each dish looking elegant--like the chef might also be a trained artist. A quick glance around the room made me realize I probably should have worn my finest. The place was packed. On the rare occasions we've eaten food that clearly exceeded my own culinary abilities, it has usually been somewhere in Ogden or Salt Lake City. But Killa had me stunned. Normally, seeing a bill like this would give me a small coronary. Not this time. It was worth every single penny. Every bite was an explosion of flavor, an experience that bordered on the ecstatic. One of my favorite moments of the night: our waiter glanced across the room and caught me giving a full chef's kiss toward him. The smile on his face was priceless. Well done, Killa Nikkei.
