I met my cousin here a few weeks ago for dinner when I was in town. I was a frequent flyer of sorts at this establishment in the past and knew the previous owners who did a wonderful job creating a German inspired restaurant and beer garden in the late 1990s. The building was previously The Century Inn and is one of the oldest continuously operated restaurants in New York City. It has a great history and I think the current bar dates back to the mid 19th century. After the sale a couple of years ago, the new owners kept the German themed menu, beer list and most of the decor. The decor and overall ambiance of the place is great. We were here on a Thursday night at around 6pm. It was empty. I think while we were there, maybe two other tables were occupied. There were a couple of patrons at the bar so it was relatively quiet. The food was ok, nothing special. I had the chicken cutlet Schnitzel which came with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. It was pretty bland overall. The vegetables may have come out of a can, not sure though. My cousins ordered the wurst sampler and he said it was fine. Again, the food was okay and not as good or hearty like I remembered it being. I know the spring and summer season are coming and the beer garden will be open soon. A literal tour of Bavaria, without the annoying plane ride. This "Middle of nowhere" restaurant is a total treasure. Beautiful, authentic decor. Extremely clean. Great, friendly staff. I love the fact that instead of hot bread, they give you hot pretzels. The pork Knuckle, or ankle/shin/shank??? Whatever it is? It's amazing! Crispy flavorful skin, tender, juicy meat. I absolutely love the dumplings. DO NOT drink the tap beer if you're driving!!! It is so big, so cold, and SO DELICIOUS that you cannot stop chugging it. And it's authentic German beer. So no 5.0 alcohol like American beer. This stuff is like 7.5 or higher. They feature live music occasionally, and it's a whole lotta fun! Great experience! Highly recommend! read more

Time for an update, long overdue! This place is a classic and a staple in the area. It has recently changed ownership and staff, so it was time to see if the old magic is still there, and any improvements were noticed. I'm happy to report on both fronts. The old world charm is still there, and the food is better! We started off with the jumbo pretzel, which comes with a cheese sauce and a sweet mustard. I prefer a spicy mustard, but I guess some folks would appreciate this. I stuck with the cheese sauce. For entrees we got a jagershnitzel and the rahmshnitzel, both items that have been on the menu for years. The rahmshnitzel was even better than I remember, with a better sauce and fresher meat. Ditto for the jagershnitzel. We will be back for the pork shank. In the meantime, come on down and enjoy! (Minor point of feedback, the new barstools are too short for the bar. Very disappointing experience. We came with a party of 9 people and were told the wait would be about 1 hour. After waiting for an hour, we checked again and were told they had no idea how much longer it would be -- maybe another hour, maybe 1.5 hours, maybe even longer. The biggest problem was the attitude of the hostess managing the seating. She was extremely rude and dismissive when we politely asked for an update. It felt like she was annoyed that we even asked a simple question. Waiting is understandable, but rude service and poor communication are not. read more

The food was absolutely delicious, and my family and I really enjoyed our meals. Unfortunately, the music was both way too loud and not enjoyable at all. Even though we sat far from the speakers, we could barely hear each other talk, and the waitress got part of our order wrong -- I'm assuming because she couldn't hear us over the noise. If they had the music lower and just playing softly in the background, it wouldn't have been that bad. The food and service were otherwise great, but the music completely ruined the atmosphere. For main courses, we had the Rouladen (sliced rolls of beef stuffed with smoked bacon, onions, mustard, and gherkins with red cabbage & potato dumplings), the Rahmschnitzel (pork cutlets with a creamy mushroom sauce, German home fries & vegetables), and Dusseldorf Chicken (in a wine sauce with shallots, mushrooms and Dijon with vegetables & whipped potatoes). Good food, good service, decent atmosphere (except the bathroom - that needs some attention). I was hoping for spectacular food. The pretzels were way too salty (but it was easy to scrape off the excess). The rouladen was dry, and needed more bacon and pickle - but the gravy was good. The potato dumplings were really dry. Red cabbage and hefeweissen dunkel was the best part of the meal. I may give it another chance, but my first visit was a bit underwhelming. Service was good - mid afternoon on a Sunday, not too busy, and I had food within 15 minutes. Nice, old-world atmosphere. Three stars - I'd go back with you. I used to visit Killmeyer's a lot as a child with my family, but recently started going back to hang out at the bar and to try their food again. We recently went on a Saturday night and had a great experience! The food is 10/10, we had the pierogi, the jumbo pretzel, the house wings, and shared the Prussian steak. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing! They also had live music the night we went and the bar was PACKED. Compared to when I used to come, the food is significantly better now. If you tried Killmeyer's in the past and had an "eh" experience, I definitely recommend giving them another chance! read more

Saturday 7/22/23... We came in for lunch this past weekend.Once upon a time, there used to be 3 German restaurants on Staten Island. Sadly, those others are no longer around. Killmeyer's is the lone survivor. For drinks a down east cider for her & a Hefeweizen on my end. Very refreshing on a summer afternoon. Our entrees were sauerbraten and veal wienerschitzel. Pretty good. On my order added (veal)a fried egg. Portions are just the right size for a lunch. Service by our bartender/ server Amanda was excellent. Keep in mind it wasn't that crowded on a weekend day. They have a very good selection of beers from all over the world. But mainly from Germany of course. It's a divey type of bar. Nicely breaded, freshly made, definitely a reliable spot to get your German fix! As I was eating, Head Chef Rolf came out to greet me and check up on how the food was. Had a pint of Cigar City Florida, a nice wheat beer with a little bit of back-end flavor profile. My budy had the Gaffel Kolsch, also a nice wheat beer with mellow flavor provfile throughout. I discovered this place about a year ago & immediately fell in love with it! The food is outstanding & consistent. I soon found my favorites on the menu & retuned many times, making it my regular go-to spot. The chef even pops out from the kitchen to greet patrons, which is always very nice. Unfortunately, the weak point with Killmeyer's is the service. It can range from good, to mediocre to downright poor. My last 3 experiences here have been subpar, because of bad service. A few times I got a lame apology by the server & maybe a couple of dollars off the bill without asking. I still love food & atmosphere, so I'd let it slide & return a week or two later for my fix. It seems like lousy service is becoming more of the norm in recent months, which saddens me. I can understand an isolated incident or two here & there, particularly on a busy night, but that's not the case. Overall, service here is trending downward. Killmeyers is one of my favorite restaurants & it's such a quaint little place, around for over 100 years!!!! I'd happily dine here for the next 100 years if I could! On tonight's visit, giving them yet another chance, we went early & found it to be about 1/3 full. We were immediately seated & gave our drink order, which promptly arrived. Great so far! We then placed an order for an appetizer & entrees. A little while later, a different server brings out the entrees, but the appetizer had never materialized. I mentioned it & the young lady knew nothing about it. No problem, I told her to just cancel it, as we were now about to start on our entrees. A moment or two later, my server popped over apologizing for the forgotten appetizer & told me she removed it from the bill. Whatever! But the thing about tonight's visit that I was most disappointed about was, after only eating half of my food, I asked my server for a to-go box so I can pack up the leftovers & have an amazing lunch the following day! My server told me she'd send the guy over to pack up my food. When he arrived, I clearly told him that I wanted to take home my half eaten meal, while my husband's plate was empty, as he had finished his food. Our server dropped the bill & scurried off. After several minutes, the man returned to finish cleaning my table but had no bag for me. When I asked about my leftovers, it became obvious that he forgot about them. I waited a few minutes for my server to return so I could mention it, but she never reappeared. I just paid the check & left, sad to not have my to-go bag with me. It's unfortunate, but I'm going to look for another place to frequent for dinner & drinks on Friday evenings. I do not want this place to fail!!! I really hope they get their act together. The food here is great, but bad service can bring down a great restaurant. I was even considering having my next family function in their party room, but afraid that my expectations wouldn't be met at an important event. read more

My family and I have pride in our German (Bavarian) heritage, and have been going to Killmeyer's Old Bavaria Inn since 1995. The new owners Kim Boschi and Rob Cherrick are great, and the authentic German food is absolutely fantastic. My Bavarian mother-in-law always loved Killmeyer's! Their rahmschnitzel, jagerschnitzel, sauerbraten, kassler ripchen and wurst dishes are all delicious and the portions are huge! The spatzel is like how Oma would make it, as are the potato dumplings (kartoffelklöße) and the potato pancakes. The goulasch is excellent as well, served over a nice bed of egg noodles. The draft German beer selection is very good, including classic German lagers and wheat beers like Spaten, Hofbrau, Bitburger, Franziskaner weissbier, Kostritzer schwarzbier, even the high-octaine and very delicious Aventinus weissbier (8.2 ABV), with proper German glass steins, weissbier glasses or one-liter masskrugs. They also have a very nice selection of craft beers on tap and a great selection of bottled beers and ciders from all around the world, including Belgium, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, and the good old U.S.A. Bartender Brandon will steer you to the right beer, and is a very warm and friendly gentleman! I recommend you make a reservation for the weekends. We were there with a party of eight on Saturday and both dining rooms were crowded with customers. There was even a live jazz band! Glad I made a reservation. Wow! Such a cool Place. We walked in and was greeted by our waitress. I wish I could remember her name. Very nice! We order 2 different tap beers each. So delicious. I love getting the weisse beer with a little raspberry syrup. There are very few places that know what it is when you ask for raspberry syrup in your weisse beer. It mellows it out so good. We ordered the potato pancakes for appetizer. Wow! Very crispy and delicious. For our meal we got veal Wienerschnitzel, it came with potatoes, broccoli and mushrooms. Delicious. We also had the farmers Feast. Delicious. 3 types of meats, with red cabbage and mashed. We also ordered homemade Spaetzel.. soooo good. Definitely a great old style Great German restaurant. I'm not sure what happened to some of the staples here. Food is still good for the most part but they got rid of some of the best things on the menu. Vegetable spaetzle, new potato pancakes are not good (heart breaking), new spaetzle (not great) no more bacon cheddar wurst as well as some of the other sausages. Been meaning to check this place out for years after since reading about it in some hipster publication. Got a chance to do so last weekend on a random trip to SI. Take a requisite pic outside with the iconic Bavarian boy and a moment to admire this 170-year-old building, first opened before the Civil War. Then proceed into the cozy and inviting, dimly lit tavern where friendly locals will take care of you. We came between lunch and dinner on Saturday so it was nice and quiet. There's a bier garten out back on the patio, so feel free to revel there on a sunny day. The German beer list is extensive and had several bottles I'd never heard of. Can't go wrong with a Celebrator on draft. Fantastic beer, well paired with hearty food. For grub, we knowingly over-ordered. The smoked/salted fish platter was nice though you'll need a friend to help you on the marinated herring (and I say this as a former Soviet). The trout and salmon were on point. The potato pancakes are outstanding and I urge you to save room up front if you're ordering it as an appetizer. As it was, my farmer's feast was impossible to finish, but tasty nonetheless Shout-out to the potato dumpling and bratwurst and apologies to the smoked pork loin and pork roast, which deserved more attention than I could muster. My wife cleaned off her shepher's pie, a daily special. Friendly service and a local crowd recommend this place, and its relative inconvenience for interlopers like me should keep it solid for a long time to come. read more

What happened here? Either a different chef or a drunk one the night I was there. Last year I was so surprised how fantastic my sausage variety dish was that I returned and ordered the same thing. The sausages were gross. The red cabbage on the side was inedible. My daughter got some steak dish stuffed with something which was also inedible. The beer garden in the back is a beautiful spot to eat and listen to whichever band is there. Inside is also a very cozy atmosphere. I came here on a Saturday night for a birthday party. 5 of us walked in together and we waited about 20 minutes for a table to be set up. By the time we sat down, we realized that most of the tables were empty so we didn't know what took so long. 10 minutes later, a few more people showed up and the birthday boy helped the waitress to add another empty table to ours. The waitress then came around asking for drink orders and a few of us got appetizers and meals. Everyone's food was out very quickly, except for mine. When everyone was half way through, I reminded the waitress about my meal and she basically just nodded and walked away like she was on her way to grab it at that very moment. 5 min later it came out. My friend ordered the pork chop entree which he really enjoyed. It came with a bunch of sides and I got the summer salad. My salad was surprisingly tasty and came with a lot of crispy apples, walnuts and Gorgonzola. The serving size was perfect for an entree. I asked for the dressing on the side, since I typically don't like it, but in this case, I poured it on. It tasted like crushed raspberries. It was perfect. Instead of bread, this place gives a few soft pretzels with mustard. They looked and smelled so good. Definitely very fresh. read more

Well, if you're American it's kinda exotic and seems authentic. If you're German, or even Bavarian, it's less so. The food is terrible, can't even comprehend how they make their so called "potato's dumplings"; they taste like sawdust. Similar, the sauerkraut. Not sure what they put in, but sauerkraut usually thrives from a simple recipe including vinegar, spices and it's own juice. This one tastes like they added weird fatty stuff and totally over cooked it to oblivion. Same to the Schnitzel. Nothing authentic here. Bad taste. Beer is good, though. Stick with that! read more

I probably should be honest: i don't eat or like german food. So this is really not a review on the food but more about the atmosphere of the restaurant. Upon entering for the first time, I noticed a musty smell. The restaurant has a lot of knick knacks adorning the whole place and it doesnt seem as if they've dusted in a long time. The building itself is old and is in need of a renovation or at least a thorough cleaning. Instead of bread, we were given complimentary pretzels, which were overly salty but still good. Although I don't like german food, my companions did, and I asked if they could make a cheeseburger. It's not on the menu but it was available and i ordered that. It was obviously frozen and not seasoned well at all but thats what I get for ordering something they dont usually make. But you can't season a hamburger? come on. The dining area was empty for the most part. The bar was quite busy however. I don't think I would return but again, not really a fan of german food anyway. read more

Can't believe I've lived on Staten Island my whole life and haven't been here. Wanted to dine al fresco in a spacious outdoor area. In terms of dining during the pandemic, this place is as safe as it gets. Seating is very spaced out, all of the precautions are being met, plastic cups etc. You will not feel crammed and crowded. Now, the ambience and food. The atmosphere is awesome, you won't feel like you are on Staten Island. I really felt transported. The beer selection is excellent, and the food was just another level, every part of the dish was a step above. If you are a foodie, you will so appreciate Killmeyer's. Everything down to the kraut tastes signature and homemade. Perogies were topped with carmelized onions and tasted like they were straight from Grandma's kitchen.
