The smell draws you in from the outside. It is too good not to try, so we did. Fudge is great and they have made in-house waffle cones. Lots of ice cream flavors but the ingredients do have red die and artificial chemicals. The people were knowledgeable to help find a non-chemical ice cream so that was good service. read more

The service was okay, I have never had a malt before and asked about what the consistency was and asked if it was like a blizzard. I was met with passive aggressive attitude. The cashier was really sweet and kind however. Upon metting the halfway of her malt, my girlfriend found a small metal ball (pictured). I would say avoid the malt. read more

I didn't even realize this was a chain but even so it was a good dessert place. Came here because someone in my group and a desire for ice cream. There was a great selection of ice cream to choose from and they even allowed samples! Ended up getting the cherry and pumpkin flavors (in two separate dishes). Highly recommend both! There was a little bit of a line outside because they are only allowing about 10 customers in the store at a time. However, the line went by very fast and I was only waiting about 5 minute! The nice thing is that even though we have to wear our masks inside they still allow tastings. I tried the apple pie one and HOLY CRAP this is amazing ice cream!!! I love Kilwins and have been coming here for over 2 decades. With an abundance of flavor choices for ice cream and all the other treats, there are lots of decisions to make. Not only is their a variety of flavors for each type of treats there are lots of different types of treats. Between ice cream, fudge, caramel apples and the variety of chocolate treats, it really is hard to choose. When I came in a few days ago my husband got a 2 scoop of their moose tracks and I got 1 scoop of mint chocolate chip and one scoop of peppermint. Kilwin's is a pretty and quaint little sweet shoppe near the lake in St. Joseph. Definitely touristy, but also popular with locals, Kilwin's is the nicest sweet shoppe I have been to. Locally made creamy ice cream, fresh waffle cones, fine chocolates (creams, nut filled and more) to die for, and the absolute bestest fudge I have ever had. I realize "bestest" is not a word, but "best" didn't seem quite enough. It's not cheap, but sooo worth it for a treat. I don't know what to compare them to; they're considerably better than Godiva in my humble opinion. But then I'm not the chocolate expert my wife and daughters are... So I brought some chocolates and fudge home for them. One of my daughters had been to Macinac Island and had raved on and on about the fudge she had there. She was a bit skeptical at first about what I had brought home, but once she tasted it she exclaimed, "this is the REAL fudge!" It all was a huge hit. In Cincinnati, we have Greaters ice cream. Benton Harbor, a beachside resort, has several homemade ice cream shops. This place was outstanding. You know how every once in awhile you put something in your mouth and you have that, "Oh my God", moment? This was one of those experiences. Based on my indecision and a tie-breaking assist by two of the ice cream Associates, I went with the Toasted Coconut. Instantly the tears welled up in my eyes and my mouth was treated to an amazing experience. I'm pretty sure I may have been quietly, but happily, sobbing while I was eating my ice cream. The only negative about Kilwin's is that everything that they have is a MUST HAVE and is amazing. Making a choice of what to have here is almost painful. And just when you think you've pushed the patience of the employees and the people in line, behind you, to the brink of a beating, you make your choice. But that feeling washes away when you hear that same foot tapping person behind you do the exact same, "I'll have.... ummm... what do I want?... ummm... I don't know what I waaannnnttt...." song and dance that you just wrapped up thirty seconds earlier. I, myself, chose wisely. Very wisely. And as I walked out of the shop, proud of my choice of what I had convinced myself was the very best choice possible, I spent the entire trip to the door muttering, "I should have had fudge! Look at that sundae! They have candy?!!? I didn't see that candy on the way in!! Is that a three foot log of freshly made Chocolate Sea Salt CarmelFfudge? I didn't even think that was possible. And just for those of you that are familiar with Greaters ice cream: Greaters offers their Coconut Chip flavor, which is fantastic. I came here with the boy while we were camping in nearby Coloma. Thought the atmosphere was cute. First time, I got a scoop of strawberry chunk which was really good. Second time, I got toasted coconut, which the boy likened it to a Girl Scout Samoa Cookie! Both times he got a soda of lemon sorbet and raspberry? The first time was great because it was thick like a milkshake. The second time (with a new staffer), it was very liquidy. Overall, I would probably come back. But I do admit I kind of got sticker shock because a single scoop of ice cream on a cone/cup costs $5! My significant other and I love Kilwin's! We go to the flagship location every year around Thanksgiving to stock up on our favorite chocolate treats and to grab some gifts for the holiday season and we were thrilled to see a location in St. Joseph. We grabbed a double scoop of ice cream each and some treats from the case to take home with us this time. I got my favorite chocolate covered marshmallow on a stick and my significant other got chocolate covered Oreo cookies. We also got some milk chocolate sea foam which is hands down my #1 favorite treat from Kilwin's. I've had other sea foam and it just can't hold a candle to Kilwin's! We love their buckeyes, too, but they were sold out so we will have to wait until Thanksgiving to get those! We enjoyed our bonus visit here in St. Joseph and will be counting down the days until our annual trip to Petoskey to get fudge and more! read more

The staff here is always super friendly and I have yet to find anything here I do not like. I am not one who usually buys chocolate fruit creams but they are actually pretty good here. Ice cream is amazing, but expensive to buy in the quarts. Fudge is awesome. I got a caramel apple and the apple was soft and not crisp so that wasn't great. I wasn't happy having to toss a $7 apple. I also broke down and got a second scoop of the New Orleans Pecan Praline ice cream (huge scoops which they weigh!), but nothing is like the cake batter ice cream. I was thinking about it after I was done. I was thinking of how I wanted another scoop the following day, but had to move on to Holland, MI, wondering if there was a Kilwin's there, too.
