I also broke down and got a second scoop of the New Orleans Pecan Praline ice cream (huge scoops which they weigh!), but nothing is like the cake batter ice cream. I was thinking about it after I was done. I was thinking of how I wanted another scoop the following day, but had to move on to Holland, MI, wondering if there was a Kilwin's there, too. How can you go wrong with a stop at the ever popular Kilwin's? It just brings happy memories! Looking through the window, all you can do is smile at all that candy making magic. This Kilwin's has great service. They have a wonderful system to meet the large number of patrons. I'm always conflicted when my frugalness and my tastebuds clash. My tastebuds say: OMG. Some of the best ice cream we've ever tasted. We stopped in this past weekend, and the seasonal flavors were out in full force. We sampled Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, and Marshmallow S'more, and all were mind-blowingly fantastic. Our scoop of Pumpkin Pie ice cream was the best decision we've made in a long time. Also, the fudge is delicious. 5 stars! My common sense says: $5 for one scoop of ice cream? I can buy a half-gallon of ice cream at the grocery store for less than that. Sure the store is cute, the employees are friendly, and the ice cream is cold, creamy, and sweet, but it's hard to justify spending that much to satisfy a sweet tooth. 2 stars. I suppose to compromise - when in Saint Joseph's, you should probably try Kilwin's, as it is, as my tastebuds comment above, mind-blowingly fantastic. There is always a few places in St. Joseph, MI, that I constantly look forward to inhabiting upon my return here every so often. Kilwins is one of them, as I reward myself with a scoop of ice-cream, some chocolate covered nuts, or all-too-sweet fudge samples after a run around the lake. The rich, creamy flavors of the homemade ice-cream is goodness to die for. I'm a huge fan of the toasted coconut, cookies & cream, and the pistachio. After trekking Boston and New York in search of each city's best ice-cream, Kilwins is my second favorite to New York's Brooklyn Ice-cream Factory (Boston's JP Licks falls in a close third). Yet I'm constantly surprised at the line here, especially in the summertime; today, it was out the door. Given the seemingly outrageous price of $4.50 a scoop, more expensive than the majority of places in New York, never mind Boston, this translates to $6-7 a scoop in small town, midwest terms. With quite a few other ice-cream and dessert shops within walking distance, there barely exists a line at any of these places, even amidst the heat of the summer. Kilwin's is that good. read more

Want to go back in time? Enter through the doors of Kilwin's. You will immediately feel the nostalgia of this cafe. Right near the front door are some great photographs that reveal the superstar quality of it's owners through out the years. I found this to be very charming. The décor of this cafe is really neat also. There are small quaint chairs and tables inside but not meant for a large entourage. Being displayed elegantly in front of you are a rainbow of ice creams to select. And beyond this is an endless sea of chocolate and treats to dazzle anyone's eyes. This shop knows no age barriers and turns everyone who once thought they grew up - back into a child. My daughters always get the single scoop of whatever flavor they are feeling for in the moment. And every bite I seem to sample tastes as though it was hand crafted by some magical elf in the back. This shoppe had reasonable prices and nothing that seemed overpriced. If anything I felt like I was walking through an art museum whose masterpieces were missing the frame but made purely out of ice cream or some form of decadent chocolate. Walking into this shoppe is a historic treat of sorts. It's shops like these that I hope 100 years from now are still around to remind us where to go when we need to celebrate life and treat ourselves. Amazing selection and prices. Cute little shop in downtown St. Joe. Tons of variety on ice creams which were delicious. The staff was super friendly and they had fudge, chocolates, and toffees. When it comes to ice cream, pistachio is my favorite. Their pistachio ice cream was delicious. I could have bought more things for later but I resisted. It was difficult. We were in St. Joe for a vacation and since our fam love ice cream especially my husband and I, we stopped ar this nice little gem. They have so many flavors of ice cream and so many other treats inside. The servers are so friendly as well! My boys have nut allergy and our server made sure to check all ingredients, washed and used a new scoop. She also used a fresh tub of ice cream to make sure no cross contamination from other ice cream that may have nuts in it. She was really awesome and I feel like they are trained well and take food allergies very seriously which parents like me and my hubby appreciated so much! Can you say Hello turtle apple... Wow it was huge and the perfect ratio of caramel to apple to chocolate. It was easy to eat and if you chill it in the frig it was easy to cut up and share with your family. Now lets talk about the salted caramel ice cream. It was really good but I must say a little bit sweeter compare to the many salted caramel ice cream I have tasted but if I was back in the area, I would still order or maybe try another favor. My son of course loved the beautiful color of the superman. We stopped by here tonight well after they closed. We asked the employee who had just stepped out the front door to grab a sign of they were open and he said no but they'd be happy to serve us anyways. That alone earns them a good review! We got a waffle bowl with praline and salted caramel ice cream scoops, a turtle caramel apple, and a caramel and chocolate covered pretzel rod. Holy late night treats!! So delicious! The praline ice cream was an afterthought but was my favorite of the two. Hubs said the caramel apple was perfect. We can't wait to try the pretzel rod. Whenever I get a change to go to St. Joseph, MI, I almost always make a stop here--even in the middle of winter! Kilwin's is a great spot to relax after a day at the beach and enjoy some delicious ice cream. The ice cream Gods have surely blessed this shop. Atmosphere: When you first walk in, you're enveloped in a delicious aroma of sweets! Depending on the season, you'll find this place to be SUPER crowded with a long line in the summer or just a fair amount of people in the winter. I think it's a testament of how nice this place is that so many people still come out in below freezing weather. In my experience, I think the seating options are a little too limited. There are only a couple small round tables in the middle of the store--a little awkward because the line for the ice cream wraps around these tables so there might be some people standing around you while you enjoy your ice cream. Ice Cream: If it's your first time here, you have to get the Blueberry Waffle Cone! It's probably my favorite ice cream here and it's a wonderful balance not being too sweet or bland. My next favorite would be the pistachio--they use whole nuts! Besides these two, most of their ice cream is delicious, you just gotta sample until you find one you like. A little tip: ask for a half scoop of two different flavors (which makes one whole scoop), they usually give you more than you would if you got just one flavor, whole scoop. Service: So far, I've found the service to be efficient and helpful. The most interaction you'll have is going to be when you're asking for samples of ice creams and I haven't had any trouble in that area. They do their job, that's all I can say about that. Price: The price is probably what I would have the most issue with if any. Although I think one scoop in a cup is a pretty fair price: ~$4.80, anything more than that is pretty pricy. Just keep that in mind if you want a lot of ice cream/toppings. Overall: Like I said, this is a great spot for both a warm and cold day--I just like ice cream whenever! While the product is very good the leadership is not. When driving in the alley behind the shop in St. Joe this morning an older gentlemen in a nice red/burgundy Ford pick up with a plate of Kilwin2 blocked the entire alley so no one else could get through. When challenged he was very rude and aggressive saying the alley is for him to unload in. I talked to my son a police office in Berrien County he said this is not true. I am sure loading and unloading is a challenge in the downtown are. That should not allow an owner / manager to be very rude and aggressive to the public behind the store. IF he is like this behind the store I am sure he is like this elsewhere. read more
