My family has been eating here for 35 years. My mom's whole family would gather around a two round tables pushed together or I'd come here after confirmation classes with my mom. I'd always get bbq pork chow fun and my mom would get house combination chow fun. We'd gobble up as much of the pickled chiles and chili oil as our noodles could serve as a vehicle for. Some of the servers are the same as many years ago. The ambience is mellow except for one time 18 years ago when we witnessed the manager argue all night with the chef when we visited around 9pm. I have so many fond memories of Kim Tar. This place is a landmark of my life. Wow - talk about a hole in the wall! We came on a rainy Saturday afternoon to enjoy some lunch. Easy parking and easy to miss! It did feel like people just knew what they wanted and that was the roasted/crispy duck. We ordered the beef stew with rice, youtiao (Chinese fried doughnut), roasted pork/chicken with rice, and the sweet and sour chicken (?) The service was fast and the food came out pretty quick. I really enjoyed the beef stew, it's like the beef noodle soup but rice instead. I really enjoyed it and there were pieces of tendon as well. The meat was tender and though there were pieces of fat - the flavor itself was delicious. I also liked how crispy the doughnut was - would be great with the rice porridge but it's also tasty on its own (it's literally fried dough and nothing too out there) I actually liked the duck more than the roasted pork. It's an older restaurant that is located in a rather neglected plaza, but please try it out! When going to an authentic Chinese restaurant, most people don't expect great service. However, I'm not sure if it's new management but I definitely feel like Kim Tar has managed to have increasingly better service on top of their amazing food. Their wonton noodle soups are classic, and I always get their deep fried intestines. If you like salty foods the salted fish and chicken fried rice is top tier. Not sure if many people know this either, but they do have deep fried Chinese donuts and hot soy milk (my go-to comfort foods). The donut is oily compared to 99 ranch, but it still hits the spot. The broth was so hot and perfect on this cold day. The roast duck and bbq pork were nice and tender. Singapore Style Vermicelli: Alittle salty but pretty decent as well. There were three shrimps hiding beneath the noodles which surprised me because it's not noticeable in the presentation. The yellow-ness from the food can get messy so use napkins to wipe your face! Service: It was average service depending on who's taking care of you. The guy that took our orders and gave us our drinks was very kind to us. The lady walking around seemed like she was tired. When it was time to go, another guy helped us by giving us boxes and the check, and he didn't seem like he was in a good mood. Did I get overcharged on purpose or accident? I'll let you guys judge for yourself.... When the guy handed me the boxes and check to pay for the meal, I double checked the receipt first to make sure that I got charged correctly. Sometimes, I can be forgetful and not check the receipt, but my gut was telling me to double check today. Good thing I double checked because I ordered Singapore Style Vermicelli for $14, Roast Duck and BBQ Pork Egg Noodle for $13 and Marinated Duck (quarter sized) for $16. If you do the math, the total is roughly $43, right? The receipt ended up saying $60 something because they charged me for a whole duck for $28. I flagged down the guy and asked him to fix the receipt because I did not order a whole duck, only a quarter size. He fixed it, but he looked annoyed and didn't apologize or anything. I'm not sure if they purposely tried to overcharge me or if it was an accident.... But that made me feel suspicious and reluctant to come back.... I probably won't go back. This place has been here for at least 30+ years. My wife used to come here as a kid and really wanted to come back for that nostalgic experience. The food here is very simple focusing on Chinese Vietnamese noodle soups, and Cantonese dishes. I found all the barbecue meats to be well made. Most pieces were boneless and full of meat. I'm definitely coming back again when I'm craving for roast duck. We also ordered fried intestine - it was alright, probably won't order again. Cons: they charge for everything. We had to order a side of rice as the dishes does not come w rice ($3.50) and also the fermented veggies that came w the dishes weren't enough and when we asked for more, we were told we had to order it. Got a late dinner here and they still had it in the back although the takeout area was cleaned and empty when we arrived. Also got the assorted wonton soup which had also ground bits of beef and chicken strips plus wontons - this broth tasted cleaner than others - sometimes the broth can taste very tinny or metallic. I was not happy with the crispy fried house special chow mein though - the noodles seemed burnt. Long overdue for this review. Like almost 20 years overdue.. lol. I started coming here in 2000 when I used to work in Buena Park and Cypress. And occasionally when I'm in the area after that. Fast forward 18 years or so and now I'm back in the area, I find myself here more often then I think I like to be. I love their egg noodles. Their noodles are always firm and not soggy or overcooked.
