By far the best Chinese restaurant in the city of Long Beach. I was told to come here on the advice of one of my clients. She did not let me down as we walked in and noticed how truly authentic it was going to look. Chinese decor on the walls and boxes of restaurant supples in the corners. Just as it should be. The bonus was that they had a TV showing the NBA Finals when we arrived. Pretty nice touch and in the back of the restaurant so as not to distract everyone. We went with a couple of our favorite dishes to run along and the Chicken Lo Mein was pretty good. Crispy pieces of chicken and soft noodles and veggies to go with it. We chose to get Mongolian Beef and it was absolutely fantastic. Crispy celery, green onions and decent sized pieces of meat in a terrific sauce. I would love to try to replicate that. My wife wanted a shrimp dish so she ordered the honey walnut and it even looked good to me when they brought it. She loves egg rolls, so she got a four piece and said they were pretty good. My biggest wow of the visit was their vegetable fried rice. MY GOD. I dont know what they season or flavor it with, but every fork full of rice that i ate, it was this sense of flavor that reminded me of butter or something else. I really loved the sensation i experienced from this particular dish. I am really curious on what it actually is. This place was pretty good! It's a great spot to grab a quick Chinese dinner with the family. The food was flavorful, and the portions were a good size, especially if you're coming with a bigger group. We had plenty to share, which is always a plus. The restaurant has a nice family-style vibe, but it's a lot smaller inside than it looks from the outside. If it's busy, it can feel pretty cramped, and you'll probably have to squeeze between tables and chairs to get around. If it's not crowded though, it's much easier to move around. The service was fast, which I appreciated. The only downside was the food runner who brought out our meals. He wasn't very friendly and kind of just set the plates down wherever there was space, even on top of the plates we were already using. It felt a little careless and took away from an otherwise good experience. I came here for lunch and honestly I wish I came here sooner. They have a ton of options on their lunch specials and everything is reasonably priced. I lunched with a friend and shared two things: -moo shu chicken ($13.95) -salt & pepper tofu ($13.95) I've never had moo shu anything before and I am now a moo shu fan 4ever. Apparently the version here come pre-wrapped, but I didn't mind since I was a first timer. The wrapper functions a lot like a tortilla, but much more delicate. I like the mixture of chicken, wood ear mushrooms and cabbage maybe? Textually it's crunchy and I like that in the soft wrapper. The salt & pepper tofu is sautéed with jalapeños which give it a nice kick. It's not your classic version of the this dish because the tofu is cubed into bite sized pieces and tastes a little more peanut-y than salt and pepper-y, but I didn't mind it. It was great over white rice. L V is perfect for a quick Chinese fix. Lunch specials are just a bonus. read more

Long overdue updated review. I've dined in a couple times and ordered take out since my initial visit YEARS ago and the quality of food has definitely improved over the years. I went recently on Mother's Day and the wait wasn't terrible. Service was decent despite some miscommunication with staff and not receiving a couple items from the set menu until we reminded staff. Overall this is a very good place for Chinese with good food, service, and reasonable prices. We ordered our usual dishes we always order when trying out a new Chinese restaurant so we can compare apples to apples. The shrimp with lobster sauce had good flavor and decent sized shrimp. Not impressive tiger shrimp but at least not tiny little ones either. Overall, solid. The fish with black bean sauce was good -- fish was very tender and the sauce had very good flavor. There were a couple pieces of fish where the texture was a little off like they were not as fresh. But overall good. The Mongolian beef was cooked well and the beef was very good, but I found the sauce a little too salty. The chow fun was good. No complaints. Very solid 4 stars. I will start by noting this was a to go order so we ate it 15 min after pick up. Even with the extra commute this was fabulous! If I could do 4.5, I would. Let's run down the details. Friday night order. Called it in around 5:30 and picked up in 15min. Parking isn't great but they have a 15min pick up spot so it was perfect. Vibe was a cool old school Chinese restaurant set up perfectly for family style dining. Salt and pepper pork chops was the fav for both of us! Great cook and high quality meat. Not too fatty and perfectly seasoned. Crunch for days! Orange chicken was the 2nd favorite. I liked it because it was still crispy while being saucey which isn't easy. I feel sometimes they are too breaded at other places, not here! Lots of texture and a great orange sauce that was balanced by not being too sweet and still bringing a light spice. Beef chow mein didn't skimp on beef and noodles were perfectly cooked with great flavor. Is it the best you ever had, probably not but it will fill a craving if you have it. Not greasy, which is nice. Last is the honey walnut shrimp. This had great flavor but I felt had too much breading and it didn't maintain the crunchy like the orange chicken. I would order it again if we ate there since not sure if the extra commute before eating contributed to the loss of crunch but likely won't get for take out again. So many other items I would like to try on this extensive menu that I don't think it will be missed. All in all I think it lived up to the love it gets in the LB food group. And if we could do 4.5 stars I would have. They don't do delivery which delayed me trying but discovering the special pick up parking was a big win and will motivate us to try again and again! read more

We've been dining here since the current owners, a lovely hard working couple, have had the restaurant, around 1999. Always a good experience. I was feeling a little under the weather and was craving their war wonton soup. Hubby and I ordered the soup for two, and I ordered another to take home and enjoy later. Their broth is the best, so fresh and flavorful. The seafood hotpot is one of our favorite entrees, and we thought they outdid themselves this time! Loaded with fish, shrimp and octopus, tofu and vegetables, but still enough sauce to make it comforting. We also ordered the house special noodles, and that too was delicious. The vegetables were crisp and the meat and fish so tasty. Even the tea, a jasmine blend, tasted better than usual! We had a lovely conversation with a long time server, remembering years past and all the owners had gone through. It's a neighborhood favorite for us and we are so glad they are still doing well. We laughed to see that they had big screen tv's in two areas of the restaurant- one showing a football game and the other an anime movie. There was a fair amount of business for a weeknight; we were glad to see that. They offer carry out as well. With a group our size and a busy dining room, it felt a little average overall. We ordered a variety of dishes across the table. I had the orange chicken, which I thought was pretty good, and the Kung Pao chicken, which was satisfactory but nothing special. Others in our group had the Mongolian beef and beef with broccoli, and both were described as tough and chewy. Those dishes were definitely not favorites, and they said they wouldn't order them again. Portion sizes felt a little on the small side for the price, which takes away from the value. If the servings were larger, it might justify the cost a bit more and possibly bump the rating up. At the end of the day, this is just an average Chinese restaurant experience. We've been going to LV since we bought our house a few blocks away 31 years ago. Wife worked at BOE and went every Friday for lunch with coworkers. They serve complimentary hot tea (I think jasmine) that was so good, and the servers were beyond attentive. I have been meaning to try this place for ages, and I finally had the opportunity during my lunch break. All the staff talked to each other in Cantonese, which was a good sign that the food is authentic as well. My roasted duck soup noodle was good, as the duck was traditionally prepared and flavorful. However, the consistency of the noodles tasted like instant ramen. I don't know whether it's undercooked or that's the intended effect, but I was not thrilled. The steamed bok choy was delicious and balanced the richness of the duck well. I also enjoyed the hot pot of tea that's served for all the customers without me even asking for it. That's the only saving grace. I was really hungry so I ate about 1/4 of the food and threw the rest away.
