Kagura is our favorite restaurant for Tonkatsu in LA. Since we went for lunch, we chose the Gardena location. They cook the tonkatsu to perfection every time. It's never greasy and the portion is just the right size for lunch. I also love this location because it's inside Tokyo Central so after we finish eating, I can do a little shopping there. I'm so jealous of the people who live in the area because Kagura is even an option at the food court! I never go to the food court where I live because there's nothing exciting there. LOL. Delicious tonkatsu that you can tell is the real deal. Came here with a friend who lives in the neighborhood-- when we were deciding on a place to eat she instantly suggested this spot. Walking in on a weekday, it wasn't too busy but there were still a couple of tables of Japanese businessmen, which is always a good sign (and my friend said regardless of when you come, that's usually the case). We got the mille feuille tonkatsu, agedashi tofu, and karaage to share plus two beers. The agedashi tofu and karaage were good, nothing that stood out but a solid accompaniment. Meanwhile, the tonkatsu was definitely the star of the show. The fry on it was light but still crispy. I also really liked the miso soup came with some carrots and daikon in it. My wife and I stopped by Kagura during a recent visit to LA while we were exploring Tokyo Central. We shared the katsu fillet curry, along with a few other food items from the main grocery store. After placing our order at the counter, we walked around to browse, and by the time we finished exploring -- about 15 minutes later, our food was ready for pick-up. We brought it out to the patio area to eat, and even around noon, there was plenty of seating available. The katsu was thick! At first glance, it looked a bit overcooked, but I was pleasantly surprised: despite its size, the cutlet was perfectly cooked and incredibly juicy. The breading had just the right thickness, with crackly bits of panko that allowed the curry to seep into all the little crevices, making every bite super flavorful. For to-go orders, the curry is packed separately, and it's the perfect amount -- enough to dip each slice of katsu and to generously spoon over the rice. If you like heat, don't skip the spicy yellow mustard next to the pickles in the bento box. Lastly, the miso soup included with the meal was a nice bonus. Located inside of the Tokyo Central market in the corner, Kagura is stationed food court style. The lady at the counter was very nice and I was able to choose what I wanted easily thanks to their display case on the right side of the counter. I chose to get the pork loin tonkatsu plate, which costed me about $14.25, a reasonable price. Different vendors use their voices call out order numbers throughout the court. We came here on a Thursday afternoon, so there were plenty of seats to sit at and the outdoor seating area was also not in use. I waited for about 10-15 minutes for my order, and I was pleased at how the tray looked. I get a large plate with a large slice of pork tonkatsu cut into strips ontop of a large set of shredded cabbage. There is a dash of wasabi smeared on the side of the plate and there are slices of jalapeno. On the side is a cup of rice and a side of sauce. I also get a cup of miso soup, which had a very fishy taste and was a bit powdery, yet smooth. Chewing the pork, I enjoyed how light the crisp layer is and how it felt like it was melting in my mouth. The pork loin had some very chewy sections that were fatty, which I enjoyed. I found the portion and ratio of everything to be just right, although it felt like a lot of cabbage but it was fine. You definitely need to dip the meat in the sauce every now and then for a nice flavor combination because it can get a bit plain and bland without it. You can also eat the wasabi or the jalapeno but I wanted to avoid spiciness! I do wish those two things were put off to the side too and not on the plate, but it was fairly easy to avoid touching the rest of the plate. read more

Very friendly staff, accommodating all my questions on the types of tonkatsu. We got 2-Loin katsu sets & a fillet katsu set. The differences are that the loin has a tiny bit of fat (which is absolutely delicious) and is firm white meat while the fillet is very lean and a little more tender. You can't go wrong with either. The panko they use is so light & crispy. It's was probably one of the best tonkatsu that I've had. I would definitely come back and do recommend Kagura Gardena. I think I would realistically give a 3.5 rating if I could, but rounding up to 4 as I don't think Kagura is 3 stars. Kagura's katsu resembles the ones in Japan, especially with their light and fluffy breading. I ordered a katsu curry and substituted the pork katsu for chicken katsu. The curry itself was rich and had that depth of flavor, honestly really delicious. My chicken katsu was also tender - perfectly fried. Miso soup was yummy, and I think the salad was ok to me; I didn't like their onion dressing as much compared to other places but my friend loved it. Here is the part that unfortunately made me knock down a few stars. When we received our food, I just thought that it looked...sad? There was a small portion of katsu and rice (the rice also wasn't packed all the way and the gap in the middle made it look like there was even less). Ratio is the most important when it comes to dishes like this. I wish I had more rice for the excess amount of curry. The meal was delicious, but it didn't really feel worth it since I paid almost $20 for meal in a "food court" setting. If you're looking for a GREAT Katsu Curry restaurant and you're in the area... STOP NOW. You've found it! I ordered the chicken Katsu curry, and it was unlike any I've ever had in the past. The breading is different than "Panko crumbs" - I'm assuming they make their own in-house. The pricing seems very reasonable for the quality of work they put into their dishes. Katsu dishes typically take a decent amount of time to make, so I'd say Kagura has an average wait time. The good: I got the fillet tonkatsu set here and it was excellent. This was my in-laws first time ever trying this dish and they enjoyed it as well. The breading on the outside of the meat wasn't too thick. I was really impressed with the fruity/plum flavor of their tonkatsu sauce. It was my favorite tonkatsu sauce that I've ever tried. The hot mustard was an excellent addition too. It really made the dish ten times more enjoyable for me. The worker there was friendly and explained to me the differences in the different meat cuts. The food was freshly made to order so it can take time. I liked the shredded lettuce and the pickled vegetable on the side as well. Outside of the tonkatsu rice plates there were pork bowls and tonkatsu sandwiches. I liked the ability to eat casually indoors, covered outdoors or fully outdoors with this food spot in the foodcourt. It made dining easier for two toddlers. There's a claw machine next to this place too. The bad: It'd be nice if they gave you a buzzer so you could grocery shop or sit down while waiting for your food.
