Bad. Pad Thai with gloppy sauce. Ordered take out which I have to do frequently due to my job. The car smelled like @ss and I almost didn't eat the food - wish I hadn't. Awful, over-sauced dish with 5 slim pieces of chicken and undercooked noodles. Asian noodles should be soft, not al dente. Sauce has peanut butter thickness with a face-smashing amount of fish sauce. I had to drive with the windows down for twenty minutes to clear the foot-stench of the food from my vehicle. Poorly cooked, unbalanced food in a small quantity for the price paid. For the reviewers that give this place high marks you have never, ever had decent Thai food. I feel sorry for you. I guess the 2 lone diners at 6:30 pm should have been my first clue. Eww. read more

I absolutely love the food here! I feel really fortunate that this was one of my first introductions to Thai food because it sets the bar extremely high. I alternate between Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and Pad See Ew but all three are delicious. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal. The Pad Thai is made with a thick peanutty sauce that coats the noodles in goodness. I love the crunch of the sprouts mixed in with the soft rice noodles. The chicken in all three is always juicy and perfectly cooked. We can't have King and I without having apps. We usually get the Thai spring rolls, chicken wotons, and satay. The first two are fried to crispy perfection but are never greasy. The chili served with both would taste great on anything - I wish I could get it bottled! The satay has a delicious marinade and wonderful grill/char-y goodness. I'm in love with the peanut dipping sauce - I need a bottle of that, too. The only downside is that they don't deliver, but luckily Moms lives right around the corner. It never takes more than 15 minutes for the order to be ready. I have been to King and I many times and would have considered myself to be an advocate. But after my recent experience, I am unimpressed with them. We placed takeout and asked "is this enough for 3 adults?" and "are there any peppers in this?" (The menu didn't indicate peppers, but we always ask to be sure.) We got home and discovered we had received two tiny containers and two medium sized containers, three of which had peppers in them. We called and arranged a return. When I returned the food, the older proprietor said "this is the portion WE would eat." Wow. Sorry I happen to be slightly overweight and I have a teenager to feed. I work in the area so decided to try to the food for lunch one time. The interior of the restaurant is extremely nice, despite it being in a plaza. It was relatively empty when I went, as there was only one other person there besides me, which I found weird. The menu had a large variety of Thai food ranging from curry to noodles to other authentic Thai dishes. For lunch, the options are limited to the more popular dishes. They do give you the option of choosing two small portions of your two favorite choices, plus hot and sour soup and white rice, which I thought was great bargain for under $10. I personally got chicken massaman and shrimp pad thai. To my disappointment, the food was not that great. Being an avid Thai food lover, I was expecting the food to be at least good since the décor was so nice and they had authentic dishes. There are no other Thai Food spots in the area that I know of so if you have a craving for Thai food, you are going to have to settle for this or drive into another town. The food here was ok, but I got takeout so it was not nearly as good as I'm sure it was fresh. However, I was thoroughly put off by the fact that we ordered the food and went to pick it up when they said it would be ready. We were taking it for dinner at the Downtown Cabaret theater for a show. We waited for 30 minutes and they just kept telling us it was almost ready. Then, another guy came in and handed them a bag saying, "Here's the wrong order you just gave to me when I was here before." They then took that bag back into the kitchen and re-wrapped it in a new bag and handed it to us. My husband questioned this and has worked in food service, and it is completely illegal and disgusting to serve food that has already been served to someone else. How do I know they didn't start eating it already? Anyway, by that point we were late for the show so there was nothing we could do. We took the food and were not impressed by it. I wish we had just gotten our money back and reported them to the department of health, but we let it go. I will not ever go back there again. King and I was the introduction for many in the area to eastern cuisines outside Chinese takeout. Today, King and I still is the best. There is a lot more competition these days, both for good Asian food and more specifically for good Thai food. But this old faithful still holds its own at the highest echelon. King and I was my first introduction to Thai food as a child, and it was a family favorite my whole life. I have had Thai food in dozens of restaurants around the country, and to this day, King and I is the standard by which I compare all others. What is good here? To begin with, the spring rolls are the best fried roll of any kind that I've ever had. The satay is moist and succulent, and the peanut sauce is perfect. The nom sod is refreshing and meaty. The soups are splendid and consistently satisfy on a cold night, both the Tom Ka Ghai and the Tom Yom Goong are recommended. For entrees, the Pad Thai is unparalleled, the sauce is dark and rich in flavor, and there is a perfect balance of noodles and bean sprouts. I love the massaman curry and the pad rama (usually I get them as chicken, but try them with shrimp too). If you are in the mood for seafood, there are a variety of whole fish preparation, all worth trying (avoid this for take out, though, as it does not taste as good twenty minutes after cooking). Another seafood favorite is the hot plate, a sizzling platter of shell fish and vegetables in a spicy tamarind sauce. For something simpler, but equally delicious, try the goon grob or goon ping, fired or grilled shrimp with excellent sauces (Sweet Plum Sauce - Yum!). There are also some good duck options, although the portions can be a little small on these. Don't forget to order a Thai iced tea or Singha beer, perfect complements to the sweet and spicy food. There are two locations, this one is technically in fairfield, but right by the Bridgeport and Startford borders. The other is Bridgeport on the Fairfield border on the post road. The ambiance is pleasant at both locations, and the food and menu is the same. King and I is not just the best Thai food around, but it is as tasty as Thai food gets! read more

It was my 2nd time here and it was very good! The lunch menu is great! You get soup, rice, and 2 entrees for less than $10! You can't beat that! And it's actually authentic Thai food. The owner is from Thailand and she's very sweet. I do recommend this place! It wasn't busy at all and I have no idea why. Probably because it was the weekend and the weather was very nice. This has been my favorite restaurant for years. They recently opened a location in Fairfield, which makes the commute much easier. Chicken Massman and panaang are great. I love the chicken satay. The spring rolls are good, and I love the naam sod. The Fairfield location is bigger, although it loses a bit of the authentic Thai feeling with the large wooden tables and chairs. Wow. I have to admit that it doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it was fine, and the food was really fantastic. I had larb as an appetizer, and I think I'll just go on record as saying that I really don't think I could get enough of that stuff. My main course was drunken noodle, which I don't think they could've done any better. Intensely flavorful, and the portion size was just perfect (I wanted a bit more at the end, but I'm sort of glad it wasn't there... sort of). To top it all of the, the service was terrific. I read the other reviews on Yelp and went to try this place out today for lunch with 3 coworkers. A+ very good! Everyone was very pleased with the quality of their food and friendly staff. Everyone's plates were empty, we had drunken noodle and pad thai and a curry appetizer, called something like Kunkao or something that was very very delicious. I've been to the King & I twice. The first time the food was ok but our server was incredibly rude and inattentive despite the fact that the place was totally empty. I felt compelled to write this review because I just I gave it a go again hoping my first experience a fluke. But, no, same exact experience. The waiter (same young man as the first time) had to be asked twice to bring water, hovered over us to rush us to order, seemed put out when we asked for chili sauce--all while the restaurant was virtually empty. Found this Thai restaurant very subpar. Got takeout, I had the red curry with chicken, my husband had the drunken noodle, and we split an order of spring rolls. My chicken curry was extremely salty, too thick, not spicy at all (although I didn't realize they have mild and spicy options when I ordered, they should have asked) and VERY small. I was still hungry after! The rice was disappointing too, bland white rice, not jasmine like I expected. Spring rolls were ok, but nothing amazing. My husband thought his drunken noodle was decent, so I'm giving 2 stars instead of just 1. This is my first time trying this place, but very disappointed that these pretty standard dishes were not very good. I will not be going again. read more

We were excited to try their Thai food last night - we ordered 3 meals for $57 bucks. We ordered take out and when we opened the bags we saw two meals we just plain unseasoned boiled chicken. It was discusting and horrible. The chicken was gray and in just plain broth. I can't believe they can confidently have meals like that on their menu and serve them to the public. No one would continue to eat the food, so we gave it to our German Shepherd to eat. DO NOT go there - go to Taste of Thai in Milford, CT for WAY better food. Our worst restaurant experience ever! And it was on valentine night (02/14/2012) Food quality: 2 over 10. The beef in the Drunken noodle was dry, raggy; the flat noodle was unevenly mixed in with many part of it without the sauce; the chicken satay was dry and cold (supposed to be juicy and hot after all, it's supposed to have been on flame cooked) the fried calamari was cold and soggy; the shrimp and chicken in the Pad thai was dry, cold, and tasteless. Food portion: 1 over 10. Each of the three fried noodle we ordered was about half filled. It took our 3 children about 5 minutes to wipe them clean. Price: 1 over 10: exuberant for the quality and portion we received. Service: Had to be the worst of the worst. Only two servers working the floor that night, running like chickens with the head cut off, doing everything: taking order, serving food/drink, cleaning table, making drinks behind the counter, answering phones for takeout orders (which by the way took way a lot more priority than customers eating in) I felt bad for the servers and still tipped 12% for a meal that our family of five had to immediately go for some burgers and fries to fill up. A note to the owner: IT'S VALENTINE NIGHT! HELLO!!! One of the busiest nights in the whole year for restaurant biz. What were you smoking while letting the place run by two servers on the floor, one cook and one helper in the back, and NO dish washer (that's what the server told me out of frustration and exhaustion) A note to restaurant goer: Stay far away from this place if you want decent service, fair price, and consumable food. read more

We went for dinner. The quality is above average. I ordered a spicy calamari dish and it was extremely spicy (be sure to specify the level of spiciness beforehand, because the default is not for the common eater). The pad Thai noodles are a little sweeter than usual, and the curry as well. My boyfriend's chicken asparagus dish was absolutely scrumptious though. The rice is not cooked correctly and they used too much water. The portions were minuscule and they ran out of fried ice cream, so we could not satiate our appetites and were left a little hungry after dinner. This place would be quite awesome if the prices were 30% lower, or the portions were enlarged. read more
