I think they have great potential but it depends on what they do with what the customers tell them. I want to commend the manager/owner guy who came out and talked with us. I gave an honest opinion to him directly and will here as well. The restaurant was very clean, and decorated nice. Comfortable! The staff were friendly. Our waitress was precious, bless her very pregnant heart. She was very attentive. We both ordered the 2 egg breakfast, that we upgraded the signature dragonfruit pancake and signature croissant French toast to. I got the chicken sausage links and hash brown casserole. Casserole was ok. Could have been fresher. It was 11:30 and tasted like it was made first thing in the morning, but still edible. I would like it more cheesy. My hubby tasted the base most. I'm just picky with my hash brown casseroles lol. Chicken sausage links were FABULOUS!!! Highly recommend!!! Hubs got the turkey sausage patties and they weren't good. I didn't try them because I don't eat turkey. Both of our eggs were cooked perfectly, mine being over medium and his scrambled. The signature items. I told this exactly to the manager/owner guy. The dragonfruit pancake: the pancake was not good. Idk if they messed the batter up but it tasted/texture was like it wasn't cooked, yet didn't look undercooked. It was just weird, like the recipe was messed up. I hope that is all it was. The dragonfruit compote on top was delightful!!!! It had the potential to be fabulous, just the pancake wasn't it. The signature croissant French toast was good but the middle was not cooked. You could see the wet custard. I think the griddle was too hot. Outside was slightly charred, not too bad, but inside not done. Just need to make sure they are cooked. My mocha latte wasn't mocha. It was a good latte, but zero sweetness or chocolate flavor. The hubs caramel macchiato was warm and dreamy! Again, I see so much potential in the place, just some tweaking and it would be amazing!!!

There are multiple seafood options, and seafood isn't something our town, and we all opted for seafood. Our friends both had grilled shrimp and loved it. My wife had the fried oysters. I got the surf and turf with a ribeye and fried oysters. The steak and oysters were perfect. As much as I want to get the flounder next time, it's hard to pass up great fried oysters! All of our meals came with a salad bar, and we were all happy with the selection and freshness. We were also given complimentary hush puppies instead of bread, which we thought was a nice change. The restaurant's liquor license was just issued, so they didn't have wine yet, just beer and White Claw. The ladies had one each while my friend and I each had an ice cold Red Oak. For dessert, we tried the hot fudge cake and the cheesecake. The hot fudge cake is a light, fluffy, and delicious made from scratch cake. They are not slices but rather small loaves. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall. The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem.
