2.5 stars. Had lunch here with a girlfriend in between classes last week. The insides are pretty basic with a couple of big screen TV's and what looks like either recycled fake wall paneling from another restaurant or what was left over from the previous owner. This is the main points to the ambiance. The lunch specials are reasonably priced with large portions. Sadly, the food just wasn't very good. The hot and sour soup lacked any heat or tartness, the fried wonton that came with the meal was greasy and stale tasting with only a tiny bit of sauce over it (the best part of the thing) and the chicken in my dish was pounded out and somehow curled during the cooking process leaving it overcooked and strange looking like when you curl your tongue into a taco shape. Since food options are quite sparse up this part of Bollinger, I guess it would do in a pinch, but since Safeway has a buffet with Chinese food, you might be better off with that. read more

I enjoyed coming here for lunch because it's only about 5 minutes away from the DVC San Ramon Campus. They offer a nice lunch selection under $7 dollars that comes with a bowl of soup. I've eaten here at least twice a week since I've tasted the food here. The portions are generous, the taste is good for the quality over price. The place is nice and elegant too. Why did I give this place a 1 star? I've become a local here and the servers even recognize me. I always come here with at least one other person after school. I always tipped them following their nice tip guide at the bottom of their receipt. The last time I came here, I left my wallet in the car so my friend paid with his card. I told the server nicely that I'm going to go grab my wallet but I need a box up my leftovers. She comes back and hands me the box and I think that she would at least help me with it but she didn't. My friend was like, "she doesn't deserve a tip." I walked outside to my car and right when I leave the doorway the cashier runs out and says "Excuse me, next time you come, you pay the tip, we don't charge tip on card." I was so upset by it I didn't even go back in to tip her. In fact, I wrote a letter to the Better Business Bureau! That is why I haven't been to this place, but my experience hopefully don't happen to you. I hope they read this and evaluate on their staff and customer service. read more

This place is having its grand opening this week, so my buddy and I headed over to check it out. We were greeted by a little girl (that is related to the family that owns) that opened the door for us. I liked the feel of the inside of the restaurant. The place has a modern theme that is not over done. We sat down and our waiter came over with tea and asked us what else we would like to drink. I have to say that this guy and pretty much everyone there were very warm and friendly. We ordered our usual crab puffs, generals chicken, honey walnut prawns and pork chow mein. When the food came you could tell right away that portions were pretty small. I know quality over quaintly but I do like left overs. The chow mein was the best item of the group with thick noodles and good amount of meat. The prawns and crab puffs were also pretty good as well. I do have to say that the generals chicken was very disappointing. The chicken tasted like they got it from the frozen section at Costco. The prices were pretty reasonable considering the small amount of food you get. We also got 20% off since its their grand opening which was nice. I would recommend this place to anyone and we will back for sure to try other items. read more

Our family has been coming here for several years as they have the best pot stickers in Contra Costa County. While service was never their strong suit, the food was good enough. However, after last weekend we will not return. We arrived at 5 pm and were told there was only one table open for the five of us (2 children) as all the other tables were reserved (no one in them - but reserved.) The seats were so far spaced out we wouldn't be able to talk so we started to move chairs closer together and were told we couldn't because of the reserved table next to us. The server was extremely brusque practically yelling at us to move to a booth and added a chair at the end of the table because the table was too small for the five of us. The service got worse from there with us having to track down 3 people to take our order, they took away my father's fork with his plate so we had to wait and ask for another one, they crammed the table with the food and the server kept putting her arm immediately in front of my face to put food down, refill waters, etc. The topper was when my father asked for some freshly chopped garlic and ginger - which we've gotten before and they said they didn't have it. What Chinese food restaurant doesn't have garlic and ginger? When it was time to leave, the table next to us who had children were given an extra table at the end of their booth so they had room. The original table we were seated at? It had a family and the reserved table next to it was still vacant. That family moved the chairs around. Not sure why these families got special service but we didn't. Since we didn't get our check, I walked up to the front to pay the bill and told the person there that was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had - she said, "Sorry", and held out the bill for me to pay. And . . . my father was up all night with intense digestive distress. We will not return. read more

Came here for lunch was really hoping for at least average Chinese food but didn't happen. I ordered the Kung Pao combination, son had Mongolian beef , wife had Eggplant with pork. All three dishes contained the exact same sauce which was the saltiest barely edible sauce i ever had at a Chinese restaurant. None of us could finish our meals. Crooks and scammers. These complaints might seem trivial but these are what makes these Cantonese restaurants so annoying. We got their set menu. Did not get dessert as part of set claiming to have run out of whatever it was. No discount on the price because the dessert is supposed to be a gift (!) when it's clearly listed as part of the set menu. Got a coupon for free wonton appetizers while logging in to "Eblast". Did not honor coupon because staff says it was a mistaken advertisement. These people just make up whatever excuse they can think of like they're talking to a two year old kid. Really disappointing experience here with my family. The food itself was ok, on the salty side and seemed full of msg. The food wasn't the worst part. The worst part of the meal was when the waitress brought out oranges THAT HAD MOLD ON THEM. EWWWW. come on, that is just downright disgusting. And when we brought this fact to the attention of the waitress, she said it was from the knife. First of all, the mold was growing on the orange. We aren't stupid; we've all seen mold before. Second, even if (hypothetically) the mold was from the knife, that is still unacceptable and disgusting. The waitress was so unprofessional when dealing with this matter. At any decent restaurant, they would take corrective actions, but the waitress was just plain rude, denying fault when OBVIOUSLY the mold from the oranges she served was her/the restaurant's fault. And, we had a few non-Asian people in our party, and the waitress purposely withheld chopsticks from them. What the heck man! Food is OK, not great, but good enough for Chinese American food in the 'burbs. Place is clean and bright. Service is better than a typical Chinese restaurant but it can be spotty. Sometimes service is prompt and friendly, other times it can be rude or non-existent. What we typically order: The Honey Walnut Prawns had a decent serving of large-sized prawns with lots of glazed walnuts; however, it often has too much mayo coating it. Anything (we usually get chicken or pork) Mu Shu is also a huge serving but when ordered as take-out, not enough hoisin sauce is included. Also not enough pancakes so we either buy an extra order of pancakes or eat it over rice. Note: not for anyone with "cabbage phobia." Most times, the Roasted Duck is very good, meaty and comes with crispy skin. Sometimes, the skin isn't crispy and can be very greasy. Steamed Chicken (bone-in) looks pale but is really very flavorful. I think they soak it in a garlic-soy marinade before cooking. Salt and Pepper Pork Chops are so good, we usually gnaw on the bones to get all the meat. However, only order it sparingly as it is very salty. Salt and Pepper Prawns or halibut are also excellent. Triple Mushroom with Pork isn't bad, especially if you like mushrooms. We also like the String Beans with pork. For soup, we usually get the Wor Wonton or the Westlake Beef. Stay away from the lobster. My parents ordered it recently and they were given a choice of size. Since it was just the 2 of them, they got the small which is actually half a lobster. It was just the perfect size for them but only because it was all shell and had almost no meat. One huge positive about this place, I don't think they cook with MSG since I don't get a headache, flushing or sweats after eating here. read more

It's your basic Chinese fare in a generally suburban, non-Chinese area, so don't come in expecting SF or Oakland Chinatown. The group of coworkers and I opted to eat family style and we ordered a few lunch specials and along with a noodle dish: -Mongolian beef -Chicken with string beans -Squid -Chicken and Beef Fried Chow Mein I must say that their lunch special portions are generous, but it looked like they could have added a bit more chicken to the string beans dish. It may have just been an unlucky draw. You also get a bowl of hot & sour soup and a choice of fried or steamed rice. Service was definitely on par with most Chinese restaurants so I have no complaints. Would I come back? I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to others. It's worth at least driving out to Koi Garden or Just Koi in Dublin, if not further. read more

We stopped in for a quick lunch on a Tuesday afternoon after the prime lunch hour had past. The place was not very busy at all but we had to wait a bit before someone noticed us. We were given a table quickly enough but the staff didn't seem all that friendly nor interested in us. Our order was pretty simple. A Hong Kong style Combination Chow Mein and a Beef Tomato Chow Fun. The beef tomato Chow Fun was not too bad. It was decent in flavor. But, when we finish the dish there was a big puddle of oil in the bottom of the plates. That is a sign of carelessness. The Chow Mein was skimpy on the topping - only two pieces of small shrimp in addition to the few slices of chicken and beef. But the worst part was the sauce. It was overly salty. It just felt like the kitchen really didn't care . There wasn't any love and great care taken in the preparation of these two dishes. We will just have to keep looking for a better place in our local neighborhood for Chinese cuisine. Jim read more

Customer service was terrible. Before even ordering, we had to ask for the menus and the waitress with long hair said "you want menu?" And threw ONE menu on the table at us. That was strike one. When we were ordering, I asked a question to the waitress with short hair. She came off very impatient and rude. King's Palace is my favorite Chinese restaurant in San Ramon. It is authentic if you order the right dishes. I've dined here several times and also gotten take out. I usually ask for less oil and they honor that well. I usually go for the 3+ dishes for $7.50. It's a really good deal and you can easily feed a whole clan of people. The menu is quite extensive. Before this secret menu was only offered in Chinese, but now it's available in an English menu for all. There are many dishes that I enjoy and among the favorites are the House Tofu, Triple Mushroom with Fish, Pea Sprouts, Preserved Veggies with Beef and Salt, Pepper Halibut, XO Sauce with Calamari. The steamed chicken is also good as is the roast duck. Claypots are also really good here. Dishes are well portioned. We have gotten to know the waitresses over our visits and they are always super sweet. Convenient location...next to Safeway. Plenty of parking at the shopping center. read more

However, I do like to check yelp from time to time to see what new place I could try. This restaurant certainly have a lot of mixed reviews. Most commonly mentioned among all the reviews for this place: - rude service: sure. Even for a Chinese family, they might get irritated with us easily. I have been to way too many Chinese restaurants where service was horrendous. I think for this place, it isn't so bad. I think the waitresses are just easily annoyed and perhaps underpaid. Just keep smiling and they will warm up eventually. Or maybe I am too forgiving..... -greasy: no. One of the dishes we ordered was fried and it is not greasy. There is some good "wok hae" in the kitchen that allows the dishes we had to be very tasty without too much grease. I disagree with some of the other people's comment about the greasiness. -price: reasonable. It is pretty standard for San Ramon. -ambiance: quiet. This is definitely a great place to bring a group because they have large tables in the back that can be quite accommodating. -food: good. It wasn't too salty, nor too greasy, nor had bad parts. I think it was good and fair. Many people who may not be of Chinese descent may think that what you see on the English menu may be what you can get and it's not totally true. I think the reason there isn't an English version of the Chinese menu might be because they feel that certain people might not understand it....? I don't know. I really liked our dish so maybe you can try and order what we had: ** ginger scallion deep fried fish fillet ** pea spouts with garlic (so good! it's a different type of veggie very common in Chinese dishes) ** sizzling black pepper beef with bell peppers (and it comes out on a black sizzling iron plate) (I would post pictures of these, but my face is in it, and I don't want to distract it away from the dishes) I think this place is good and would come again. Not too shabby for San Rameezle Chinese. From my experience, the best (tasting) in the area. My girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. We found the food to be quite good. I had the Mushroom Chicken. It was served steaming hot over white rice, pleasantly spiced with peppers and garlic. The mushrooms and chicken were fresh and tasty. My girl had the Chicken with Orange Zest. She also enjoyed her meal. We ordered from the lunch special menu and with a pop each and tip, the bill came in at 20 bucks and change. I went here with my family for some authentic Chinese cuisine. My family and I were very pleased! We ordered our favorite crab with ginger and scallions. We also got Hong Kong style chow mein combination, fried rice, fried chicken and honey walnut prawn, and wonton soup. We enjoyed our food immensely and our waitress was very attentive and helpful. This place is okay. The food is pretty bland. We requested no MSG, which could explain the blandness, but my logic is that if you need MSG to make your food taste good, there must be something wrong. We had Mongolian Beef, Fish, and Mushrooms, and nothing blew me away. Chinese food has never done that for me, but there are places where I can say the food is tasty. This is not one of them. The service here is also on the slow side. We came in during a not so busy lunch period, and it still took us a while until the waitress asked us for our orders. The food came out relatively quick, but once the meal was done, we once again had to wait a while before we got some service. Maybe it was a sign that we should have dined and ditched, just kidding! The plus is that the area is really nice. It's in the hills in an affluent area, so what do I expect? It was beautiful. Other than that, to wrap it up, King's is a little below average. During a craving for Chinese food, My sister in law recommended this place... so we ventured on over from San Ramon. - tea - they refilled the pot attentively... but the water was not hot enough App: - potstickers: pork filled (i'm eating veg this month, so I didn't try it) but my family loved it. along with the super spicy hot mustard it came with. Entrees: *** - PAN FRIED SEA BASS - omg this was a m a z i n g ! If you aren't sure what to get you should get this! - STEAMED WHOLE FISH - only 17! What can beat that? It was tasty! I can't recall what type of fish it was.. but it's the typical steamed fish with ginger and scallions and soy sauce. - SHREDDED PORK WITH DRIED BEAN CURD - tasty tofu and cilantro pieces, with pork pieces in them as well. This is the best Chinese food I've eaten in the San Ramon valley, and the service is excellent as well. If you look around, you can clearly see that the restaurant runs at a very fast pace for the employees, but they maintain a very friendly demeanor through it all. I love the staff here. The duck wonton soup is unbelievably flavorful, much more so than the regular wonton soup. The potstickers are great. The consistency of the dough is just right, and the meat is flavorful and fresh. The foil-wrapped chicken is very flavorful -- possibly the best I've ever had. The chow fun is very good. The sesame chicken is outrageously flavorful with just the right amount of crispy. The Mongolian beef is perfect. The salt and pepper prawns are so delicious. Get them with skins on. Trust me. Give it a try. And last but not least, order Lobster Cantonese. They don't have it on the menu, but they'll make it for you. I grew up on this dish in NYC and it's probably my all-time favorite Chinese dish. And they do it right here. Delicious!!! read more

This is absolutely the worse take out order I've ever had! Half size roast duck order, with only less than 1/4 size of duck pieces. Two of the pieces are the neck. King's Palace is the first good place to eat I've been to at The Plaza (just forget about Fat Cactus, ugh). I've only gotten take-out from there so far, and I've been pretty pleased so far. The quantity isn't tremendous for the price, but I think the 'better than cheap take-out' quality more than makes up for the discrepancy. I also think the place is still finding its stride in terms of dealing with a crowded house. I've already seen improvement in two visits one-week apart in the amount of chaos there. The Grand Opening discount helped the prices quite a bit towards my having a positive opinion, but after being there twice I feel comfortable in giving it a solid 4 star rating. We decided to give King Palace a try tonight as we heard it is related to Imperial Delight (in San Ramon). Like Imperial Delight, the staff was very friendly. We ordered off of the 3 for $21 menu (unfortunately only written in Chinese--in my opinion they should have this in English as well): -Crab meat with fish tripe soup: Tasty as normal, I really like the fish tripe...the texture is great! -Salted fish with eggplant: Nothing can go wrong with salted fish. And with eggplant? It was a new dish so we gave it a try--excellent! -Beef stew with tofu: one of my favorites--the beef was very tender and flavorful and the deep-fried tofu was a surprise! -Salt and pepper fried pork chops: In my opinion it's the dish you must order at a Chinese restaurant similar to how I feel like I need to order fried chicken at a soul food restaurant. The only thing missing was the sweet red bean soup or tapioca dessert. Other than that everything else seemed up to par. read more

Honestly everyone with a negative review on here is crazy. Bad service means you're on a crappy date and can't hold a conversation for the 5 minutes it takes to get your first appetizer. With the $12 dinner special, the soup is delicious, the chow mein is great with thick fresh noodles, the fried rice is perfect because it doesn't have too much soy sauce and fresh vegetables and eggs like it should. I got the General Tso chicken and my lovely date got the Kung Pao chicken and they were both awesome. To be honest, he is a fatty and we both have leftovers which is great. Also, it comes with a fresh veggie egg roll to top. Ignore the ones who say it's too oily, I only have a couple reviews on here but I've eaten at a lot of places and it's called King Palace for a reason. read more

I have never had a good experience with King Palace. Yes, the location is convenient to San Ramon residents in the Gale Ranch/Windemere area, however the location does not make up for the poor service and the mediocre food. I definitely do not find myself to be an expert in Chinese cuisine, however, I never cease to feel ill after eating food from King Palace - perhaps my stomach isn't used to the ingredients in some of the dishes. The few times that we've ordered food from here, our orders were mixed up (one time they added the crab - most expensive item on the menu - by accident....) and in the restaurant, service is really quite atrocious. I think a larger staff would definitely do the place SOME justice. read more
