Content. My boyfriend took me to this place on Valentine's Day, and this was my first time eating here. DECOR: The decor of this place is old- and I don't think it was set that way, I just think it hasn't been updated since it opened a long time ago. What is puzzling is that they are adding new pieces of contemporary art on top of the old- instead of just replacing the whole thing. It was "off putting". The place itself is medium sized, however, they have managed to cram 20 tables (and chairs) in a very small room, so just walking down to our table I felt like I could bump and hit someone else's table therefore spilling their drinks and what not. Tables were THAT close. So needless to say, there is absolutely no privacy (heard way too many private conversations in the time I was there) and you can never get too comfortable (otherwise you might bump your neighbor's table). FOOD: This was the best part for me, the menu was full of food that I don't normally eat (unless for big occasions) so that made this a better experience. I ordered the Pesto chicken and it was so so good! It actually tasted freshly made and the chicken was juicy. I got a side of beets with it, which I was pleased with when I realized they were not canned. STAFF: We made reservations, which no one would've have guesses since we still had to wait 1/2 hour in line just to get to our table. The waitress was friendly enough and checked with us frequently. Overall the place was not that bad, and I didn't mind waiting half an hour to be seated- but the other people in line were obviously aggravated so maybe that's a point they can improve on. read more

For the first time ever, we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner out - what a mistake to choose this restaurant. We know it's hit or miss with them and kept hearing the same from other people, but it was close to home, so we went! It was a BIG MISS and we won't return. First, the menu was entirely different than what appeared on the website. When I asked the waitress about it, she stated that was an old one. The Thanksgiving menu online stated 'All Dinners served with Clam Chowder or Fruit Cup, Salad, Rolls, Mashed and Sweet Potato, Vegetable and choice of Dessert.' WRONG! There was no chowder or fruit cup, there were no rolls or bread (waitress told us there were none because they were so busy); the salad was fresh, that much I can say; the "mashed" potatoes were horrible - it looked like a day old lumpy scoop on the plate, not whipped, no butter/milk, flavoring - just a clump of potatoes that was just warm. There was no other vegetable offered and the price did NOT include dessert. There were no utensils at the table and when we asked for some we were given forks and spoons, had to ask again for a knife when the waitress brought the salad. Had to ask for milk for my tea as she never asked. The presentation was terrible on the main plate - it was the clump of potatoes with my piece of sirloin and my husband's lamb. I went here for a friend's birthday party and about 30 of us squeezed into the back room. We had the prime rib buffet which was pretty good, I was offered a 3" thick end piece but it would have been too much, the piece I had was perfect. I usually avoid buffets but the food here was pretty good, fresh. Fresh carved roast beef, seafood medley, salmon, haddock, scallops, fresh steam veggies - all done just right. Modern? No. Fancy? No. Good food? Yes. This restaurant punches above its weight when it comes to food quality. If the owners could update the decor they would have a 5 star place, but the regular clientele would likely not appreciate that. So if decor is not the be sold and all of your dining, stop by. In giving King Phillips 3 stars it's in context of every restaurant I've ever eaten and not just those located in the central MA area. THAT said, we ate here last night as a last minute switch from a previous destination and were pleasantly surprised to find immediate seating for 4 and they were having an extravagant dinner buffet including prime rib. The buffet was about $20 and nothing was extraordinary per say but it was all fresh and tasty and I just love me some prime rib. I've been here before many years ago and suspect I'll stumble back again should I be in the area. read more

Stopped in for ice cream at their dairy bar on ride home from Market Basket in Athol. Ice cream is exceptional - Gifford's which is a New England staple. Prices were steep, though. No cheaper than Kimball Farm. What irked my group most, though, was that we were charged $0.50 for jimmies and given a tablespoon scoop over the top. Most of which fell off. I chuckled thinking this was a sick joke as the gentleman passed me a cone with about 50 jimmies, but alas, it was not. It's funny - if they covered the cone with jimmies and charged me $5, I wouldn't have cared. But because I felt gypped, I'm writing a review. I honestly don't know where to start. The service was a joke, the decor was awful and very bright, the food was the worst food I've ever had. Upon entering the building you get that hospital dinning area vibe. Very open and bright with tables connected to the benches scattered about. After about 10 minutes or so our waitress made her way to our table, took our drink order and disappeared. She came back with 3 of 4 beverages, apparently they were still making my water. She came over to take our orders, no water yet, we ordered and waited. While waiting my daughter noticed food debris stuck between the tines of her fork. We called our waitress over and requested a new one. (Still no water). After an eternity our waitress brought out our salads, surprisingly all 4 at once. Since I still didn't have water, I gave my daughter my fork and waited, just looking at my salad. Finally frustrated I got up to search for the fork storage area and got my own. Flagged down another waitress and asked for a water again. Finally I got a beverage. Yay. The oil and vinegar bottles were sticky and gross, the tomatoes weren't even close to ripe. The salad was bagged salad mix. Our meals came and they were hilariously disgusting. 2 orders of surf n turf, 1 garlic parmesean scallop and pasta, and a 3 way fish combo which included haddock, salmon and scallops The steaks were broiled and never flipped so one side was charred and one side looked steamed, it was cooked to the right temp though. The surf was a scallop cut in four with a few lobster claws and knuckle meat tossed in, sitting in a pool of butter. The steak was tough, the seafood was bland. The garlic scallop dish was cooked ok but they failed to remove the abductor muscle and they were sandy indicating they weren't rinsed. The salmon was raw and had an un appetizing blob of who knows what on top. A few things stand out here: everything is cooked from a frozen state, that was obvious by how dry everything was. the staff is a direct reflection of ownership and just don't give a f@ck. I say this because 100 watt light bulbs do not belong in a fine dinning establishment. Pictures and decor are relatively cheap, but add ambience. The meal cost me $160 which is a substantial chunk for the garbage we were served and the service we experienced. I strongly suggest you do not go here. Trust me. You WILL be disappointed. read more

Well...Beer is good. 2 dollars for a small plastic cup of guacamole. 2.25 cents per bacon wrapped scallop. I thought they were going to be good size they were the size of a nickle. We are local and figured we would give it another try as we were disappointed every other time. The ice cream is also over priced and the employees in the ice cream section are rude. I mean, they are trying I'll give them that! Staff was super friendly and on the ball. But it boiled down to the price for me. It was all waaaayyyy overpriced. The Cobb salad was okay and it seemed like the chicken on it was marinated, flavorful, and well cooked. The burger was overcooked and not very big, bacon was good but crazy small... The problem was it was just too dang convenient on our way home. And we were starving. It would have been three stars if the interior was updated a bit. King Phillips catered my wedding this past weekend. The food was amazing! We had a family style dinner and everyone was given their food in a timely manner, all around 15min! It was hot and delicious, and the scalloped potatoes were a huge hit! Everyone was very impressed, including the bride and groom :) The service was amazing, from the apps to the main course. The staff was super friendly and worked very hard! I would recommend King Phillips for catering, 100%! Very happy customer, and a happy bride is always a good thing ;) read more

I usually only go here for drinks because the bar area is nice. But someone gave me a gift certificate so I took my kids to dinner here. The buffet on Wednesday night was just okay ($17). I got that because it was cheaper than pretty much everything on the menu. Nothing special kind of bland... Blah. my daughter got Buffalo boneless chicken wings and they were awesome. My son got the kids spaghetti with marinara, way over priced at $8, and it was just okay. I think the pasta was overcooked and the sauce not very tasty. My other daughter got the lobster mac and cheese... $22. The lobster was awful, spongy and tasteless. I mention to the waitress that it was awful and she said that she would let the cook know. That was all. Didn't ask her if she wanted it cooked again, something different, or a discount on it. My daughter ate about 1/4 of the mac and cheese because it was just awful. the waitress did not offer another plate or any discount I will not go there again to eat food. And by the way, I grew up here and used to come here as a kid and it used to be great. But, they have not renovated anything but the sign outside in probably 30 years. Love this restaurant! Food is excellent and portions are generous. New owner took over last year. Staff are very personable and owner is usually on sight and approachable. So far we've had fried clams with awesome fries, seafood alfredo (sauce was creamy, smooth and cheesy), sirloin steak. Salads were crisp and fresh and blue cheese dressing is terrific. Out door seating in warm weather and live local music in summer. Great place to eat. read more

Me and my son went for dinner he got a Pesto noodle with scallops and some other stuff on top I got a fish sandwich mine was ok my sons was all green to much pesto it looked horrible but he had to try it he ate only some of the noodles no scallops I even tried a scallop and spit it out we told the waitress that he didn't like it you could tell it was mostly all there but she still charge 20 bucks for that plate I wont go there again should have not charged for that. This has so much potential to be a small rustic fine dine in restaurant. What it really is, is bland overpriced diner food from a can. The waitress was very nice and very accommodating but we were probably her only table. They carry the food trays on their shoulders, which is standard but tie the hair back ladies. I watched 2 people douse their hair in food while preparing to serve. Thankfully it wasn't our server. She must have overheard us because she pulled her tray right under her shoulder. This place is supposedly known for their prime rib but for a Sunday afternoon, having only medium well cooked prime rib was not something I was looking for. I should have gotten steak tips, and my sever wasn't elated that I didn't move forward with a steak, but I wasn't about to order a steak from a place that only had medium well cooked prime rib. I eat my steaks rare- it didn't seem likely that they were going to cook it the right temperature. Thankfully I didn't and not only was the prime rib dry for my friend (Who unfortunately did order it) the steak wasn't good either. I then made the mistake of ordering the lobster and asparagus Alfredo. Soooooo freaking bland. The asparagus was probably from the can- it was literally like gelatin. The Alfredo was not good. I should have known when the noodles were too soft. I gave it 2 stars for the quiet atmosphere and the decent service but if you're looking for something upscale in the area- don't waste your time here. Dry prime rib and over cooked steaks and gelatinous asparagus is not a sign of a lasting business. Also- more gross that the servers are ok w putting their hair in your food. Go elsewhere. My boyfriend and I ate here on New Years eve. I know, it's a while to write the review, but we were just discussing where to go on Thanksgiving and then New Years eve. We both agreed King Phillip was the place to be New Years Eve. They had this buffet that looked amazing. I remember it being reasonably priced for New Years Eve. I personally don't eat seafood or steak, so there wasn't much on the buffet to warrant me getting an entire buffet for two items. I chose the roast lamb.. mint jelly on the side. All I can say is it was AMAZING!!!! It was soo good that I kept eating it without the mint jelly. SOOO good I can't wait to get it again this year, hoping they are preparing it on New Years Eve. My boyfriend was more than pleased with the buffet! He said it was excellent and well worth the money. The service was very friendly, she checked in often. We didn't have to wait for a seat, the restaurant was probably half full, I think we got there around 7ish. FIVE stars! and can't wait till this years dinner. read more

This place really does have some very good, and inexpensive dinner specials each night of the week. Make sure you check their website. If you like prime rib, this place IS the place to go for an cheap, very good prime rib dinner which is only $15. You get a HUGE piece of nearly perfectly cooked prime rib that is as good as I have had anywhere else for twice the price. I am not a big buffet guy, but if you enjoy them, Wed nights are very good. I have also tried the baked stuffed lobster ($13.99). It's not a huge lobster, but for $13.99, what you get is a decent sized chicken lobster stuffed with shrimp, scallops, and haddock. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not big on the "snacks" they bring out (packaged saltines, ritz crackers with spread cheese) though, and the salads are your basic head of lettuce with cukes, tomatoes.. It just doesn't scream "freshness". Also the Guinness draft does not taste clean and crisp like it should. Either the lines need cleaning or the lines are not cooled right, I'm not quite sure. It just doesn't taste like a Guinness should. I thought it might have just have been one time, but I have tried a few different times. Just a few pet peeves that are keeping me from giving this place 4 stars. The lounge is comfy, they have entertainment certain nights, and is a good place to go and have dinner, or a few drinks. The place has outdated decor, but the staff is friendly and the food is good. Overall a good place to go. I enjoy going here a few times a year, and the prime rib is a must try if you are craving it. read more

We went to the KP a few months ago for their buffet. Years ago we used to go there a couple of times a month because the food was really good. The last visit was terrible. They offered steamed clams, prime rib, burgundy sirloin tips and a bunch of other items that sounded really good. Unfortunately, almost all of the food was really not very good at all. I really want to like this place, but there are too many things wrong than right. First, the menu is very expensive. This would usually not be a bother to me but when you are sat at a semi clean table and given paper place mats and flimsy, cheap silverware...it is a little off putting. Bill came to over 100 dollar for sub par food. The chicken I was given with my gnocchi was nearly inedible. For a place so expensive, I would expect your chicken to be decent rather than fatty. Last night we had the worst service that we have ever experienced at a local restaurant with our children. We hope that this is not what is to be expected under the new ownership as we have enjoyed this local spot over the years. The food was OK (not the best for a Saturday night of a holiday weekend) but the service last night was unacceptable. Our waitress rolled her eyes at us, took my unfinished drink without asking, was completely inconvenienced to refill our waters and get the dessert tray that the 11-year-old asked to see, and worst of all treated the kids poorly. We complained and she seemed to have been told before her last interaction with us, however, it was too late and by far our worst experience at the KP. We spent over $100 and left the message of how unhappy we were by not tipping her. We are over 30% tippers normally because we believe in this occupation but this waitress and the KP would be better if she did not deal with the public. Needless to say, it would take a lot for us to return to this once favored place for a Saturday night out to listen to the music, enjoy some drinks, and appetizers. read more

ok so let me start by saying i had a really bad experience here before. service was bad and food was mediocre (and got charged for every coke i ordered!!! who does that these days??) The wife and kids and myself were cutting down a christmas tree nearby and we decided to give the place another shot. We all walk in and the hostess was busy writing a gift certificate. So we wait, and wait, and wait -- 5 minutes total. She did not even give us an acknowledgement that we were there. This is one of my pets peeves. I feel that you should be recognized withing the first minute of walking into a place -- busy or not. So im thinking here we go again.... We get seated, place looks a little old (let me explain later). Its not a knock on the restaurant Im just thinking that its part of their style. Our waitress comes who is a sweetheart and very attentive. She brings us packaged crackers and that orange sharp cheese in a dish. I think to myself again -- wow really? packaged crackers? Seems a bit weird but still kind of a cool spin on the traditional thing. We look at the menu and it seems really pricey for a little town in central mass. Entrees were priced 17-22 dollars. Im not against paying a lot for a meal as long as its good. The bad vibes keep coming to me.. We order the friend shrimp as an appetizer and the wife gets chicken cordon bleu and I get the chicken marsala. Both come with salads. The salads looked very messy, sauce just everywhere on top and overall just looks like it was mass produced without any care. Stay with me..The salads were excellent tasting....complete opposite than how they looked! Things are getting better! They bring us excellent bread and olive oil with balsamic vinegar....Very tasty! Now getting back to the old looking atmosphere i was referring to earlier. Our dinners come out and they were on a very nice, contemporary plate. Much different then the ambiance. Kinda confusing. Nice garnish on plate (bright colored orchid) So in closing, I had my doubts about the place before I went in. Had my doubts in the beginning. But it was a great eating experience. Food was cooked perfectly and very tasty. Server was great. I would totally suggest going here, and also suggest the fried shrimp app, chicken cordon bleu, or chicen marsala. Portions were huge and if you factor in that you really will get two meals out of that 17-22 dollar dinner, its really not that bad ! way to redeem yourselves KP! FYI for the family planning on going....our family of 4....75 dollars BEFORE tip(we tipped 20% so total bill was $90!!!) One kid got the cup of chowder and the other shared a dinner with his mother. Our family went to the King Phillip for Thanksgiving 2015 and were not disappointed. The drinks were cold and the food was hot and delicious! We all chose the buffet. It included the traditional turkey with potatoes and both meatless and sausage stuffing (the sausage stuffing was some of the best I've ever had so I never got to the meatless stuffing), mashed potatoes, great gravy and a carving station with roast beef and ham were some other highlights. After a great main course, there was a dessert table that was equally spectacular. The staff was helpful, efficient and friendly. My entire family agreed. The King Phillip restaurant located in Phillipston Ma is a stop for both locals and route 2 travelers. With a restaurant, lounge, seasonal dairy bar and small motel on site it is a local hotspot. We have visited the King Phillip on several occasions and have yet to be disappointed. On today's visit we come on a late Sunday afternoon. On Sundays they offer a reasonably priced buffet from 10 am till about 2.00pm. They draw a steady crowd for this buffet and it has a large selection and it is reasonably priced. We didn't make it for the buffet today but had an opportunity to sample several menu items. Crackers and cheese spread were brought at seating and salad and bread shortly followed. There were several of us dinning today and we had an opportunity to sample the Lobster and Asparagus Alfredo, Surf and turf with a ten ounce NY and 5 Oversized sea scallops and Chicken Parmesan. Of the three my favorite was the Alfredo, thick cut pasta with a delicate creamy Alfredo, lobster and tender asparagus. No time today for desert or coffee on this visit. The meal was adequate and we left full. The prices for entrees ranging from $14 to $24 for most items. Reasonably priced food and a normal standard type menu. If you're looking for gourmet high class dinning you may come up short at the King Phillip. The food is standard with no surprises . If you appreciate family dining at an affordable price King Phillip will deliver. Food quality was fresh, served hot and had flavor. Great old school place visited twice so far. Stopped in for the brunch and was blown away by the homemade food. The Bloody Mary was big, flavorful and well seasoned. We stopped again for dinner last night on our way to western mass, and I got a haddock sandwich and Adela got a Caesar salad with herbed chicken. My fish was super fresh and well cooked. We tried the appetizer, deep fried asparagus- WOW! Light and fresh - almost a tempura - the only drawback was no dipping sauce, so we used the 5 time award winning chowder- it was thick and creamy and not loaded with filler potatoes. Overall the atmosphere is very local, very friendly and as travelers we were welcome and had a great time - well probably stop in for brunch I the way home. read more

We decided to try the regular Wednesday buffet instead of ordering of the menu. Big mistake. The food was room temp, not even close to hot. The salad was OK, nothing unusual but it was plentiful. So if you go on Wednesday, skip the buffet and order off the menu instead. read more

My first time here, but not for my guest, she has been going there for years. It was late on Sunday when we arrived 45 minutes before closing. We were greeted warmly and shown to our table. My friend was not particularly hungry so she asked if she could get something off the children's menu (she is 85) without hesitation our waitress said, "Of course". We ordered onion rings and sauteed mushrooms (fantastic) for appetizers and I had a Caesar salad and french onion soup for dinner, she had the linguine with sauce. We are from Montreal area. We've stayed at the King Phillip Motel twice in the last 3 months and can't wait each time to go to the KIng Phillip Restaurant. The food is some of the most wonderful we have ever eaten! my husband was especially impressed with the Seafood selection offered, the quality of the food, the excellence of preparation and especially loved the Seafood chowder. The bar offers specialty drinks made with ice cream which are absolutely heaven! The staff are friendly and welcoming and it is just a wonderful 5 star experience in the middle of nowhere! read more

I really wanted to like this place, I did. It started off fine with quick wait service and a pleasant waitress. The cheese and crackers they brought out were nothing special, but I enjoyed the salad. My DH and I ordered the boneless buffalo wings to start which were okay, but much too salty as was the blue cheese dressing. My husband ordered the stuffed lobster which was small and the shrimp was not cooked. I ordered the pesto chicken. It came out on a plate and looked pretty enough until I noticed the pool of liquid it was sitting in. I'm not sure what it was, but it did a dis-service to the presentation. Additionally, the chicken was not seasoned at all and the whole thing had no flavor. I ate the mashed which were okay. I chose not to order anything else and we asked for the bill. Here's were the meal took on a sour note. They charged me $4.99 because I ate the salad and mashed even though they told me they were going to take it off the bill. To me, this was such poor customer service! I complained to the waitress and she apologized, but told me that she was told by the manager to charge me their normal "sharing plate service charge." I know it's not her fault and she got her full tip including the cost of my meal. I told her that we would not be back. These people need to learn how to treat their customers. read more
