King's Kitchen is doing great work in their kitchen. I came here on a Friday night to order to go and devoured half the order as soon as I got home. I had been at a party where the tequila cocktails were freely poured and the hors d'oeuvre did not keep up. So I had a very good appetite when I placed my order to go at King's Kitchen: braised duck over rice with the bok choy and char siu over rice and bok choy. The BBQ spareribs were already out, which must attest to the popularity of the BBQ spareribs. My wait was about ten minutes and people were constantly flowing in. I had time for a cup of tea to settle my stomach and watch this late night eatery in action on a Friday night. Good service here. The braised duck stood no chance when I devoured it at home. The rice and bok choy were perfectly prepared, but that braised duck steals the show at only eleven bucks. The savory juices from the duck are absorbed by the rice and the duck meat is so tender and flavorful without being salty. No soy sauce or condiment is necessary. There are minimal bones with this beautifully sliced duck. This is not as artful as Peking Duck one might order elsewhere, but this level of quality at this price point is hard to match. I ate a third of the char siu for breakfast the next day. Very good as well, with beautifully sliced pork without gratuitous fat. The char siu has more sweetness to go with the savory. It's also more meat and quite filling and satisfying; though, the braised duck was more memorable. The BBQ spareribs must be even better if their lack of availability this Friday night says anything. The value proposition is definitely here at the very clean King's Kitchen. There are several places offering an extraordinary value proposition, most notably Wah Fung No 1, but this takes the quality up a few notches without a substantial price hike. For whatever reason, we could not stop ordering and got the eggplant/salted fish/chicken clay pot (no rice), cucumber salad, and the roasted pork over rice. Rae - stop getting the roasted pork here - I don't think you like it. It's not as crispy as you think it will be. They have the clay pots! This is their second store right on Mott street and it has been a long time I had the salted fish and minced pork clay pot. My mother use to make this and it just reminds me of my childhood. I sent a photo to my brother and his response was "bring me one". The crispy crunchy rice on the bottom of the clay pot is the second highlight. The chef appears to be certified and his certificate is on display inside the restaurant. I forgot to take a photo of it. The interior is really nice and clean and the bathroom is a good size too- not in the "basement". IYKYK. We continued our quest to check off this block of renovated Mott Street in Chinatown which was by now, thanks to social media, crowded with lines overtaking the side walk. At 1:30 pm on a Saturday, we caught the tail end of lunch time crunch, waited for a good 30 minutes before finally getting seated. I saw somewhere that the King's franchise has more than 250 locations worldwide. I didn't verify that but that's pretty impressive. The establishment's logo and advertising all featured claypots so claypot dishes must be their specialty. We ordered two items that were featured on their sidewalk menu: Preserved Meat Rice Claypot $12 and Kaya Pandan Toast $5. We added another preserved meat claypot with taros. The dishes came very quickly within 10 minutes. They looked stunning and inviting. There was a layer of crispy rice which you're supposed to scrape off as "treats", similar to bibimbap on a stone bowl. All good except I didn't like the texture of the rice. I couldn't recall if it was long grain or broken rice but I prefer stickier rice. Each bite felt too dry and airy instead of being more gripping and satisfying. The toast was nice and light. I never had pandan before. Aside from the green color, the taste was similar to the cream inside a Mexican bun. The place felt cramped overall. There were a few tables that were totally undesirable, with waiting patrons standing against your elbow. I only mentioned it because it didn't jive with the nice decor; it's more commonplace in an ad hoc setup. I assumed preserved meat meant a combo with the sausage and pork belly but there was no sausage. I may have ordered incorrectly in Chinese. Other than it being very confusing what comes with preserved meat, the rice was barely crispy. It was obviously just "fried" with oil and had no browning on it. 2.) the 3 meat combo we got had bbq pork, roast pork, and duck. The rice was cold and hard. The bbq pork was dry and flavorless. The roast pork had decent crispy skin but the meat had zero flavor. The duck was fatty but in an expected way. It is also a little off putting that they serve this in a bowl. Open until 2 AM. Yes ! This is my kinda place. Sitting at home, I had a sudden craving for wonton noodle soup. This is why I love love love living in NYC. Quick, delicious and reasonably priced food and an option I'll come back to again when looking for roasted meats on rice or in noodle soup. Service here is quick and efficient but be prepared to have to share tables since they mostly have larger long tables which is typical for this style of restaurant. Big fans of the location on East Broadway, we were delighted that the quality and service of the Mott Street location was on par. While definitely more expensive than other versions of the same food in Chinatown, King's Kitchen's congee and rice rolls in a clean and well-lit restaurant were still part of a lovely experience. The fish congee was quite large and had a generous amount of fish, although the fish itself could have been cooked longer for a softer texture. My kids loved the fried cruller rice roll (nearly anything fried tends to be a hit with them), while we adults liked the egg and lettuce rice roll (if a tad bit predictably bland). That said, the service was excellent and attentive, with our waitress gamely accommodating our rowdy kids. We would definitely return to try more dishes. read more

We were in Chinatown and stopped by this place off the recommendation of a family member. I didn't realize this is a chain as I believe there are also other locations. Walking, amazingly bright, clean and spacious...which is always good to see from a diner's perspective. They are known for their claypots especially, but for yesterday, I had ordered Singapore style curry mei fun for $18. It is only a tad spicy level wise which I am able to tolerate and it was a great dish. I did wish the noodles weren't cooked that well and wish it was a bit on the less fried side. But still regardless, very flavorful and I would recommend. My wife got the eggplant seafood claypot for $21. I guess the portion she ordered was larger and didn't come with the bed of rice down at the bottom of the claypot bowl. For that portion at $21, you cannot complain. The eggplant and protein swam in the sauce well and tasted very fresh. The only complain about this dish is a bowl of rice did not come with this entree so we ordered a bowl for $2.25. The menu seems shorter than the East Broadway location, but the clay pots remain the main star here. I didn't get a photo of everything we ordered, but overall, the food was pretty good. My first visit was in Bensonhurst, which is a wee bit far from me so I was excited to see that they opened up in Chinatown, Manhattan. For two ppl, we order way too much but taking it home afterwards is the way to go. It was a rainy day so it called for some century egg congee to warm our bellies. Love a spot where I can get comfort food like congee and rice rolls. I came on a Saturday morning and was able to get seats right away for a table of 2. It wasn't very busy and the service was nice! I think where the experience fell short was the taste and quality of the food. Overall, I was a bit disappointed in the congee as I felt the seafood didn't taste very fresh. Given the amount of time each time and the expertise required to prepare a pot of clay pot rice that's crispy and slightly golden at the bottom without being burned, it's now rare to see it on menus of Cantonese restaurants in New York. Fortunately for us, we still have King's Kitchen and their newest location definitely delivered. We opted for two clay pot rice orders - taro with preserved meat and frog (in case you haven't tried it, it does have the texture of chicken). Both pots were excellent; the crispy rice from the bottom blended perfectly in both texture and aroma with the toppings and the rest of the rice in the pot. Be sure to ask for the special soy sauce just for the clay pot rice, which is not too salty and further elevates the dish with the taste of umami. Other dishes we ordered were also great. For the three choice BBQ combo over rice, we opted for roasted duck, char siu, and roast pork. All three meat choices were fresh and flavorful. The congee with homemade meatball is not what you typically see on a menu; the meatball definitely had that homemade texture and contrasted nicely against the silky congee. Make sure to add an order of fried dough for those photo ops. Another unusual menu item we tried was the fish fried dough rice rolls, playing again with the different layers of texture - fish paste was stuffed inside the fried dough which was wrapped in the steamed rice rolls. Finally, we also went "fancy" with the truffle crispy grass carp fried rice and were again pleased with this innovative and delicious dish that was topped with slivers of black truffle. Despite being very busy during lunch time, the staff were rather patient and responsive. The main drawback here? The seating arrangements felt quite cramped and we had to be mindful not to stick out an elbow or a foot. However, given the high quality of Cantonese dishes and the reasonable prices, we might find ourselves here again soon when we become nostalgic for classic Cantonese dishes, as well as more innovative combinations. read more

It was very loud inside as well so kind of had to scream to talk to each other. The new King's Kitchen location just opened as the last new entrant on the revitalized Restaurant Row on the east side of Mott between Canal and Bayard. It might be the final boss of this group, with the broadest menu that covers what many of its neighbors offer. The noodle soup on offer here is just as good as any of its several neighbors on this block (Noodle Village, Maxi's, and 1978) and King's Kitchen's claypot rice is often regarded as the best in NYC (though Noodle Village's is always excellent as well). King's rounds out its menu with a wide selection of stir-fried dishes, breakfast items like congee, youtiao, and kaya toast, and a Cantonese BBQ meat counter just to make Big Wong, Ming Wong, and Hay Hay across the street empathize with the noodle shops in feeling the heat of competition as well. This location is in a relatively small space and figures to be perpetually packed, given the quality of the food, the popularity of the existing King's Kitchen locations and this new one's convenient proximity to Canal St. Lastly - their current hours as of their grand opening are until 2am!
