Well, unfortunately, I visited again and this visit warrants removing 2 stars, making my rating a generous 3 stars. First off, the service was terrible and the female server tried to cheat us. I came with a family member that is in her nineties and using a walker - the oldest person in the restaurant and clearly a senior. Why does this server, who didn't provide any service mind you except when her boss told her to bus our plates, charge the practically 100 year old lady regular price, rather than the senior price? When I brought this to the server's attention, she did not apologize and her service became even worse, if possible, which leads me to believe the overcharging was on purpose. She finally fixed the check and then proceeded to leave rather than take my payment, pretending to work, so that I had to wait and wait and finally walk up to the front to pay. All during my meal, she was chatting with the two male servers, rather than working, by the way - there's no need to pretend to work now. During this visit, I went on a weekend, which is all day dinner price and not worth it. The seafood items all pretty much tasted not good. The crab was old enough that I couldn't really get any meat after cracking it, and the mussels from the hibachi tasted off. The crawfish was of course the frozen kind, but just not tasty. The fish was decent, but I think it's possible that fish is a lunch item. Dinner is not the way to go because the seafood items are sad and not worth eating, much less paying more for. Dinner is $25.99. In my original review, I thought the weekday lunch buffet was a surprisingly good balance between being extremely affordable and fairly tasty, with just enough variety to outweigh any shortcomings from a slightly tired building. This Chinese buffet is definitely the most affordable one near San Francisco. You can't beat the price. Lunch is the way to go because you get serviceable dim sum (love the molten lava salted egg yolk black bun), freshly made sushi rolls, your usual stir-fry dishes like beef and broccoli (with beef that is actually pretty tender), stir-fried clams, bbq pork, along with a made-to-order Mongolian grill and noodle soup station (although there's only one broth option). Oh and the soft serve ice cream here is actually the best out of any of the buffets I've been to - really tasty and smooth and sweet. All of this for only $18.99 for lunch. You really can't do any better in terms of price. I think everything for lunch was fresh and the seasoning was appropriate. Sometimes with buffets, because they're turning out so much food, the seasoning is either too salty or too bland, but everything tasted fine to me. This server (a different one) was good at removing plates from our table at the right times. The main negative of this restaurant is that the building is clearly old, but everything seemed clean. I think it's important to support affordable, reliable local businesses like this. I've probably tried all of the Chinese buffets near San Francisco and East Bay, and given the low price point of King Sun lunch buffet, I think anyone interested in an affordable mainstay should consider giving lunch a try. Just watch out for the lady server with short hair who might try to cheat you and won't do any work except if her boss tells her to. read more

My girlfriend and her family used to come here often when she was growing up in the area, so we decided to stop by after a day in the city. I've seen some rough reviews about this place online, but I wanted to give it a fair shot since it was a nostalgic spot for them. The first thing I noticed when walking in was the smell. Hard to describe, but definitely unpleasant. Not enough to make me leave, but noticeable. The buffet itself offers a wide range of dishes: Chinese food, Mongolian BBQ, and sushi. Pretty standard selection for this type of buffet. The Chinese dishes were okay, not great, not terrible. I avoided most of the sushi, especially anything with raw fish, just to be safe. I stuck to a few items I felt comfortable with, and thankfully I didn't leave with a stomachache. The price was around $20 a person, which is reasonable for a buffet with this variety. I'm rounding up from a 2.5 star rating. I haven't been here since COVID hit, so maybe 5 years, and King Sun has gone downhill a lot unfortunately. This was one of my favorites before but now, while I can still eat here and the food was ok, the restaurant itself is just worn and I can't help but think there's something wrong somewhere. Let's just start with the outside. If I was not familiar with this area, I would drive right past this place. It is so rundown - the building is worn, the paint is fading, and the parking lot has weeds everywhere. There are cars parked here, but since it's next to a hotel, you begin to wonder if the cars that are parked are for the restaurant or for the hotel. The windows are blacked out as they have sunshade film on them. The afternoon sun goes straight into the windows. Going to the inside, it is dark. Looking at the ceiling, you see water spots everywhere. They used to have a good luck at the entrance, but unfortunately that's no longer there. Maybe they need to bring it back. We were seated at a window booth, and our drink order is taken. There are food scraps underneath all the tables. They need to vacuum or clean after people eat. Then we went to get our food. The grill that used to be in back is now a noodle bar. The rest of the food area is the same where there are multiple steam areas to keep the food warm. As this is buffet, there's a ton of food sitting out. The freshest food seems to be the dim sum, fish, and chickens. I got crab and shrimp as I like seafood. The shrimp was a little bit overcooked. I think that's because it was sitting out for a bit. Same with the crab. There are some pieces that were just dry. I also got some mussel and fish, both of which were moist and very fresh. A lot of the food items didn't even have signs. They should really do a better job at that. I ate some meat that looked like frogs legs, but they weren't clearly labeled. If you've never seen frog legs before you probably wouldn't even know. That being said, it was really really dry. Chicken was good as was the dim sum and soups. Chow mein and fried rice were good. The staff was wonderful. They came and checked on us frequently, and when we finished using a plate, someone came by to pick it up very quickly. Would I come back? I'm not sure. Food was good and pretty much what you'd expect from a Chinese buffet. Nothing amazing, but solid. The staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive -- they kept our drinks refilled and cleared away plates quickly. The one complaint was the Mongolian BBQ cook. He just sat there on his phone and not really paying any attention. When he was cooking he was still watching a video on one hand and cooking in the other (solid skill, but not when working). The restaurant itself could definitely use some updating and remodeling, but overall it was a good experience. Would I go back? Yes. The outside looos like a dump after someone moved out. The inside is way old and in need of some love. Do not waste your money here. To start with the plates are in the bottom of the the food cases about 6 inches from the floor getting dirt on them each time the floor is cleaned or people walk around. I read through previous reviews before coming here and despite a lot of negative reviews, I kept an open mind. Our family came here for a funeral reception which seemed to be the majority of why this place is so popular. And this day was extremely busy with many funeral receptions as I noticed we were not the only family there. I guess you can say that would be a good sign since they need to replenish trays of food quite frequently. I actually decided to avoid any raw seafood just to be safe. I went for the Mongolian grill and filled my plate with mostly vegetables and noodles plus some shrimp. Since it was made to order and cooked in front of you, it gave me peace of mind. However, the cook added a bunch of sauces and it turned out a bit more salty than I would have liked. Other than that, I also added some walnut shrimp to my plate as well. As I browsed through the other food stations,, I wasn't impressed as the dishes either seemed greasy, mushy, or dry. Other family members ate some sushi and mentioned they experienced some stomach issues after. Quality was not excellent, but it was okay for a buffet. The servers were not friendly but they also weren't very rude as some reviews mentioned. It just seemed like they were rushing and trying to get everyone a table, while keeping track of the different parties so they can calculate the number of people to add to the bill for each group. I find this to be more of a two star experience but I suppose someone with better buffet skills might give it three stars. There were quite a few dudes with plates full of shrimp and crab legs, but I can't eat reheated frozen seafood so I couldn't cash in on that. I thought the sushi and sashimi were inedible. Usually the best bet at buffets (safety-wise, not economically) is fried food or carbs, but you definitely have to time it right so that you get the items when they come out hot; otherwise, it can be disappointing. I enjoyed the Mongolian bbq station (ring bell for service because there is no attendant standing there), baked salmon, the fish ball (stuffed with pork) soup, and fresh fruit. Everything else I tried fell short, but that's also because I am finicky about food temperature and texture so anything sitting out becomes pretty unappetizing pretty quickly (it's always been an issue for me). Front person will nod their head in the direction you need to walk. They give you cups that smell like they've sat in a dirty dishwasher for a couple of days and you get up to grab some food. The only place that was open at 10am. We just got off the plane and some in our group wanted to go to a buffet. One had low blood sugar, most of us were just very hungry. Again this place was the only place open that early and very close to the SFO airport. About 5 minutes. Upon driving up to the establishment we were a little skeptical. The place looked reallyyyy sketchy. It really looked like it wasn't even in operation. But you can't judge a book by its cover right? So we went in. LOL The inside was a little run down as well. And dark. But we were hungry. And there was food. The food selection was actually not bad at all. They had a lot of stuff you wouldn't get at a typical GA Chinese buffet. They had shark fin soup, a variety of meat balls, a variety of whole fishes, and dimsum options like savory sticky rice. Though their temperature on some of the dishes were kinda iffy, most were a little warmer than room temp, none of us got sick so thank goodness for that. Service was actually really good. Our waitress was very attentive even though she sat right by our table on her phone the whole time she wasn't helping us. They constantly had customers coming and going and stayed that way till we left. A lot of their clientele, at least on that morning, were older folks and laborers. Would I go back? Mmm.. no.
