Came here for brunch on a Sunday and it was busy! Must get: Mango lassi, poori (only), kulfi, aloo paratha, and halwa. The halwa is soft and tasty. The Poori is delicious and so is the mango lassi which is not too sweet. I know you need to have chole with poori, but the chole and potato sabzi is not good, not much flavor. I would skip it, but if you're not that picky, go ahead. The chai wasn't the best either, a bit watered down. They also need more people running the register and helping customers. They got backed up quick. For a brunch with the fam, not bad but not the best. Change the chole recipe and it'll get 4/5 stars. read more

Its been a long time since I've walked the streets of Devon. And what better way to break my hiatus than with some FIRE paya from King Sweets. This place is iconic, they've been on Devon forever. Got the paya, aloo paratha and 2 naan. You really cannot go wrong. Paya is basically stewed cow or goat trotters. This is one of the only places that has this level paya outside of Pakistan. The aloo paratha was soft and you could really taste the potato. Its basically mashed potatoes inside a paratha. The owner is one of the most humble people you will ever meet. Checked out another of these bare bones places on Devon Avenue. It turned out to be a lot better than expected. King Sweets has an intriguing name. Basically that's what brings people in. This is a counter service restaurant that has lots of sweets of course as well as a menu of hot food such as Channa Masala. Basic looking place and we didn't expect much from it. Instead it made up for the lack of atmosphere with some pretty decent food at least. The main thing here seems to be the sweets though. All kinds of good looking treats on display. Those wanting to eat something more substantial can also get a hot plate. It's about $8 for a meal. The Channa Masala is one of these. Good stuff if not great. This item was oddly served on a divided tray, even though it was all the same thing. Even though the restaurant as well as the food presentation is kind of poor, it doesn't mean everything is. If you're fine with getting pretty okay food and some great sweets, this would be the place. 2/4/2023 Came in for breakfast. Batoora breakfast was good as was paratha and omelette however we were disappointed in the puri halwa. Puri's were heavy and very oily. I will say the prices are a little higher, but the quality is worth it. The last time I went into the shop, it was very clean, and the server was extremely pleasant. I usually go to karachi restaurant but they were closed at 4:30 pm to I said lets try this and to my surprise they just made a new customer. The owner at the counter was super respectful and patient. King sweets is a Pakistani sweet shop. Pakistani and Indian sweets are practically the same, so if you hit one sweet shop on Devon you will surely see the same ghee sweets offered at other shops too. The major differences will be in style, preparation and available flavors. Also the savory or hot snacks. My old man wanted ghee sweets so away I went. Unfortunately I hit Devon Ave on a Tuesday which most locals know is their off day or "Sunday." Some decades ago all the store owners decided on one off day. That was designated as Tuesday. Most store owners regard that decree because, who doesn't need at least a day off. However, not all participate in that order. So, that warranted another go at King Sweets. Had I surfed reviews I could have chosen from what other reviewers detail as their bests. I did a quick survey of their sweets and snacks. The gulab jamun didn't look its freshest, so I avoided that. Gulab jamun are like fried pancake balls that are sitting in a moat of very light, simple syrup. The syrup may have hints of cardamom, rose water or saffron. (Usually cardamom because of cost and easy availability.) I'm guessing the display counter is kept at a much colder temp because the simple syrup had congealed and was not looking appetizing. Instead I went with a few savory meat puffs, a couple meat samosas, hot mixture (this is made of a mixture of spicy dried ingredients. Items such as lentils, peanuts, chickpeas, rice flakes. Indo peeps may eat this dry in hand or mix it with a bit of buttermilk / yogurt.) This and other sweets are sold by the pound. So you can buy based on what you are willing to spend, 1/4 lb, etc. I also purchased a measure of spicy cashews. The mixture and spicy cashews were tasty, crunchy and a decent spend. The other stuff I wasn't fond of. The puffs had hardly any filling and the samosas could have been tastier. I don't see needing another go. read more

Look, it's Devon Ave and this is one of the only places that has Kashmiri chai -- I was expecting it to be in par with the best of Kashmiri Chai in Toronto or New Jersey or Houston. It wasn't. Temperature was lukewarm, the almonds were all on the bottom of the cup, and the flavor was timid. The guy also charged me an extra $1 without telling me. There's so many amazing dessert spots on Devon (like Tahoora for example). I can't in good conscious recommend this one. read more

My Yelp app is not posting tips, so I have to write an update. Describing this place as "no frills" might just be the understatement of the millennium. I mean they don't need to go all upscale, but surely they can do better than serving food on paper plates, and using plastic utensils and paper cups. They can also upgrade the restrooms. "Why the four stars, then?", you might ask; and a good question that would be. While the ill-kept interior of this restaurant, which generally is in keeping with the environs of Devon Avenue, by the way, might have been a deterrent for me from visiting again, the excellent taste of the food keeps drawing me back. This is, perhaps, the closest to authentic Pakistani street food that you can find in this part of the world. The paapri chaat, as I mentioned in my previous review, is among the better renditions I have had in recent years. The tangy tamarind chutney and the sweet yogurt nicely complement the very hot chaat masala, which is sprinkled on with a very generous hand! I wasn't familiar with many of their offerings but the folks there were kind enough to allow me to sample quite a few to determine which I liked. They were all good but here's the sweet stuff I got to enjoy to myself along with pictures (which I've posted) of all their goodies! Carrot Halwa... tastes like a dense carrot cake Jalebi... made from deep-fried, syrup-soaked batter & shaped into a large, chaotic pretzel shape. It can be served dripping warm or cold. It has a somewhat chewy texture with a crystallized sugary crunch. Galub Jamun...a popular Indian/ Pakistani sweet dish comprised of fried dough (made of condensed milk solid and very little flour) in a sugar syrup flavoured with cardamom seeds and rosewater or saffron. 2 words: Kashmiri Chai. or 4 words: Kasmiri Chai and Rasmalai (that rhymes) Granted, this is primarily a sweet shop, so I haven't really partaken in the savoury dishes, but this is one of the few desi places that I've visited that serves Kashmiri Chai. (perfect for a typical Chicago blustery winter day after rotations, chilling with friends)The rasmalai is very rich and creamy. They sell it by weight IIRC. They have umpteen versions of barfi, gulab jamun, jalebis, etc but I stick with my 2 favs. It's generally clean and quiet. Some evenings, there are usually packs of "uncles" (older Indian/Pakistani men) discussing politics or current events, but that adds to the charm.
