I have two words: explosive diarrhea. When we walked into the restaurant from the hotel, there was no hostess and I had to flag the bartender down: "Do you want to eat?" No...I am just visiting to assess the architecture of this hideous historical complex? I then waited another five minutes for a waiter to decide which table I was supposed to be seated at, despite having reservations from Opentable for 15 minutes prior. Once we were seated, the waiter was great. I got my sangria (delicious!!) very quickly and our order was taken promptly. I ordered the fried green tomato sandwich and my wife ordered the chicken and waffles. After our order was placed we were approached by a magician. Yes. A magician. He was a nice person and his tricks were neat, but I'm an adult who just wants to drown my thoughts about our governments capital in my Sunday sangria. I don't need magic tricks to distract me from the terrible food I'm about to eat. Our food came, and the quickly crashing ship of our visit continued on the downward spiral. Lauren's "pho" inspired chicken and waffles tasted as though fish sauce was sprinkled all over it. It was extremely greasy and cold, and one of the pieces unexpectedly had a bone in it. Then, my fried green tomato sandwiches were dry, flavorless, and doughy. To add insult, my French fries were fried to a crisp and just tasted like oil. I flagged the manager down, and complained about her food. He was great. They replaced her food with the brioche French toast. The French toast was amazing, but it had orange marmalade on it instead of the advertised peach. At this point, I was optimistic about this restaurant, because the service and service recovery was on point. I didn't say anything about my food, and let Lauren enjoy her food. We finished our meal and left. Dude, we were out of that restaurant 20 minutes and my stomach was dying. I was sweating and my guts were churning. I rushed to the Kennedy center where we were headed for a show, and my afternoon was ruined. I was so sick to my stomach. I spent $80 with tip for brunch only to nearly become unconscious in the Kennedy center bathroom. I'm not afraid to spend money in a nice restaurant, but what a tacky waste. Holy Moly, so expensive!! A bagel with lox and capers is $18!! And an omelette with plain veggies is also $18! I mean, if it were the best bagel or omelette on the planet, maybe but the bagel was stale, the salmon looked not fresh at all, and the omelette was salty and kinda lackluster. Also, bottomless mimosas are $17, but a single mimosa is $16. So... obviously you would do bottomless if you weren't looking to have a productive day, but also why not just make the single mimosa a lot cheaper (because it was also a standard flute size with normal ratios of orange juice to champagne). Besides the disappointment in food, the atmosphere in the room for brunch was a little odd. When we walked in, we were greeted by two friendly, but kind of captive looking waitresses (if you're familiar with the Hunger Games, both my friend and I were immediately reminded of the servers in the Capitol, the avoxes). We were definitely underdressed for the occasion, but to me going to brunch on a Saturday at 11AM does not mean dresses with pearls and heels-- be warned, that is how literally the entire restaurant was dressed with maybe one exception. We were approached by staff about three times to tell us we should come back when the rooftop bar opened which I figured was a nod at how our jeans screamed "we don't belong at this way too fancy brunch!" but also could have been innocent advertising for the Watergate. I had been wanting to come here for a long time and while the place is absolutely beautiful, I just don't think anything is worth as much money as we spent and I felt awkward and out of place the whole time. read more

Came here for restaurant week lunch a couple of weeks ago and was left unimpressed. Decor was beautiful which is expected of a restaurant in the Watergate hotel. The service was horrible, especially considering they were not busy in the middle of the day. We were left waiting for our server time and time again and she also forgot things we asked for. Now, before I continue with this review, let me say that if money is no object and you're looking for a convenient meal before a show at the Kennedy Center, this place is more than adequate. However, if you heard this place being raved about a while ago and want to try it, don't expect an unforgettable dining experience or to be able to leave without relinquishing a good bit of money from your wallet. The restaurant itself is downstairs in the Watergate hotel and it's beautiful. My family and I were seated at a window-side booth with a great view of the Potomac. It was pretty empty when we got there around 5:15-ish, but it had filled up considerably by the time we left for our show. As far as appetizers go, we all got the warm heirloom tomato with sheep milk ricotta, and it was pretty good! It's a relatively large portion, so it could realistically be split between two people, as I felt compelled to finish it and was pretty full by the time I had done so. Now, since two of us were interested in the tableside bouillabaisse (which is for two people) we opted for it despite its fairly steep $100 price tag. This dish absolutely gets a 10/10 for presentation, as it is prepared tableside with equipment I can only describe as appearing to be more at home in Walter White's lab than in a restaurant, but I enjoyed watching our soup cook right in front of our eyes. As far as the seafood goes, everything was incredible in the broth, but I would say the lobster was a bit tough, if I had to come up with a complaint. Again, it was good, but lacked any huge wow factor that would have earned this play another star. My wife and I came here for our honeymoon dinner, we were not disappointed. The 16 oz ribeye steak was so supple and flavorful that I considered ordering another. Unfortunately I believe the pricing for the food was slightly inflated as the steak cost $60. I am content with paying such prices, as the food in DC is usually worth the plunge, but my bill here was over $200 which is the highest bill I've ever had. This is especially daunting considering that I've dined at the top of the CN tower in Toronto. Regardless of this, the meal was delightful and our server was so polite. This was one of those dining experiences that had me walking on a cloud after the fact. We elected to brunch at Kingbird for DCRW for the sole purpose of visiting the historic Watergate Complex, but we were not expecting to be absolutely blown away. The decor in the hotel and in Kingbird is striking yet warm. The service was attentive and friendly, with our waitress giving us honest recommendations about our orders and tipping us off to the peach bellinis that we could subsitute for our bottomless drinks ($17 at brunch). The food itself was lovely -- the truffle grilled cheese was probably the best grilled cheese I have ever had, with deeeelicious sweet/salty tomato soup. I probably could've eaten 6x the portion given, but that is more a testament to my huge appetite. As an appetizer it was perfect. The veal poutine was also delicious, with perfectly crispy yet soft shoestring fries. Main dishes were good, we shared the french toast and the brisket hash. The highlight for me was twofold -- the sauce on the hash and the caramelized nuts on the french toast. Yum! Dessert was good, chocolate cake served with banana ice cream. I probably would've traded it for more grilled cheese and tomato soup, though :) Our waitress could tell we were enamored with the whole experience, and explained that their rooftop bar would be opening in the warmer months. With that knowledge and our post-brunch bliss, we ventured to the roof to check it out. Let me just say, that view will be well worth the $15+ price per cocktail. We had the most lovely Sunday brunch at Kingbird during restaurant week! We chose the location mostly out of the draw to visit the location, but I ended up marveling over the food more than the surroundings. The decor is impeccable. You immediately feel transported into a different time, yet it still holds the modern vibe. But the food - oh goodness the food. To start I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup and I really didn't know what hit me. It was the best tomato soup I've ever had. That tied with the truffle grilled cheese (bless you caramelized onions), I could've ordered three courses of just that dish. I moved on to the french toast as recommended by our waitress, and it was so beautifully done. My friend had the brisket hash so we got to try both savory & sweet entrees. I'm honestly not sure which one I enjoyed more, but I recommend both. We ended the morning with chocolate cake, which was lovely but didn't necessarily stand out next to the starter and entrees. You can add on bottomless for $17 which includes all of the brunch cocktails. The sangria was wonderful, but I tend to be partial to the peach bellinis and mimosas. The waitress also recommended we come back when the rooftop bar opens. We were able to walk out on the terrace even though the bar wasn't open yet, and the views are incredible. I came here for restaurant week and I was disappointed. The service and food was good but the portions for the price was mediocre. I usually take pictures of my food but this time I only took a picture of my drink and a short ribs. All of the servings were small. I had to send my ribs back because a majority of everyone at the table got short ribs and mine was noticeably smaller. The pic below is the new one they brought out. You really could fit the appetizer, the main entree, and the dessert on one plate. For the price, I expected to at lease not to be hungry when I left out of there. Kingbird is always a pleasure to visit whether it's for a full dinner or their happy hour (perfect for before a show at the Kennedy Center). They seem to change their menu seasonally, which is a nice way to get me to try new things. Recently, I enjoyed the scallops with rhubarb, salmon sliders (amazing!), chicken and waffles, and bacon-wrapped dates. I enjoyed their drinks (especially at happy hour prices!) too. Their menu is pretty comprehensive and catered to my vegetarian friend's palate, as well as mine. I've tried a number of the desserts as well and always been beyond thrilled. The restaurant is really beautiful and service is impeccable, of course. I would highly recommend this spot for either a nice sit-down dinner or an equally as nice happy hour - it's super versatile but an incredible experience, either way. read more

Logistics: Casual Wednesday birthday dinner; restaurant is to the right of Next Whiskey bar just down the stairs. They do have patio seating. 7:30 reservation, likely wasn't necessary for that time frame as it was maybe 25% capacity--though business had certainly picked up by the time we left around 9. You walk through the Kingbird bar to get to the dining area, and casual diners may well want to stop here just for bar bites. Gorgeous interior that evokes beehives in a wood, sets the mood for a special occasion. On a weeknight there were khaki shorts, some casual dress, and strollers present as with any hotel restaurant. Service was wonderful, if a little awkward at times--felt as if the staff had been coached to emphasize how special everything was as they presented it, which can be a bit much--but they did serve dessert with a birthday twist. We had an online offer, but spent above that and the check was handled well. Not sure how handicap visitors get downstairs, maybe there's an elevator I didn't see. Food: Strange to have the meal start with bread and chips; but the bread was my favorite, the butter may have been fermented or yogurt based--delicious with fresh soft bread slices. The potato chips were an interesting sweet-spicy mix, but felt a bit stale. We started with the ravioli appetizer and it was a little too chewy for my taste; but the filling lived up to expectation--ratatouille, overt onion and tomato. C.A.B tenderloin was beautiful, perfectly cooked and ideal earthy flavor. The "pommes puree" was just that, closer to the texture of a potato soup than mashed potato, still delicious just a little too heavy on the cream. Wine list was great, was happy with all our selections. Dessert: the creme brulee was surprisingly boozy, but perfectly finished. In contrast however, the seating & tables yell out "average hotel restaurant" at best. Attentive without being overbearing, made good recommendations after getting the tiniest bit of sense of our mood, and what we were looking for. Food * * * / * * * * The Heirloom Tomato appetizer was near perfect. The goats milk cheese accompanying it was excellent. Also good were the Truffle Fries, and Roasted Peppers side dishes we had along with the 30 oz. Porterhouse we shared. Sadly though, that's where it fell apart for me. A lovely, generous cut of steak, it failed to impress me. I'm considering this in comparison to Bao, or STK -- which many would call just Above Average. The parmesan crusting was nicely done, but the steak seemed to lack flavor for me, in comparison to everything else. Stayed at the hotel that this restaurant is part of. Had two incidents with this particular restaurant that results in it getting a low score. The first was I made reservations for the following night in their dining lounge. The next night when my wife and I arrived, they did not have a table reserved as per my reservation and they had no way of accommodating us as they were packed. That was the first incident. We decided to give them another try for breakfast hoping that service would be better. We were wrong. As we did get seated immediately, it took 15 minutes for a waiter to come ask us what we would like to drink. Additional to this 15 we waited 42 minutes for our food to arrive. There was nothing spectacular about the food, and the prices were really high. My advice would be avoid this place. Please note: This restaurant does not reflect the rest of the hotel. This is a review of our IGLOO experience last night. We reserved teh roof top igloos outside of Next Whiskey. Upon our arrival, we were told our reservation was actually outside the KingBird. Please let me tell you that the igloo experience is meant for the atmosphere! The igloos at the Kingbird are a greedy way to make additional money on igloo rentals. It is literally ON THE HIGHWAY and that is the only thing we heard. With no views but hotel windows, freezing as we stared in a warm restaurant. This experience was NOTHING as advertised. When we asked for the reserved Igloo that we had a confirmation email for, we were told "we are sorry that was misleading" UNACCEPTABLE! In addition, the prices for small plates and quality of that food is ROBBERY! I am more than willing to pay for a unique experience and small bites but this food was OK and charging what you are charging for those small plates is a disgrace. I have never paid $150 for food and left STARVING. Also - this restaurant needs a lesson in food allergies. Our friend who was with us suffers from Celiac disease. We were told on numerous occasions that things were Gluten Free when they weren't. She has been sick since last night and all day today. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!! I can't even believe this is not taken seriously. When we asked to speak to one manager, he told us "maybe we should write an email" - after he flat out told her bread was Gluten Free, it was just "heavily toasted". We finally spoke to a helpful manager, who tried to get to the bottom of what she ate. But, she was still POISONED. Finally, when we got our bill after an hour of drama with managers, wait staff and chefs - don't worry they promptly kicked us out at 10:30 - we were CHARGED for the food that was WRONG and sent back. We were CHARGED GRATUITY on the Igloo fee. We were promised a discount on the IGLOO but didn't receive it. I complained, they corrected the bill. We split the check and when they rang up the bills - they CHARGED AGAIN tax - so double charging for tax. This place is CRIMINAL!!!! UNBELIEVABLE. Finally, the manager fixed the bill, waived the Igloo fee, gave us a discount on food and ran the cards again. Guess what? Today we all checked our credit cards and we've all been charged twice including the higher amount. I honestly have never been more disappointed in a restaurant or experience. There are other places in Northern VA to get the IGLOO experience. This place has no view, no experience, the food was mediocre and overpriced. I would NOT RECOMMEND this place! read more

Fantastic date night dinner before a performance at the Kennedy Center. We started with their aged Manhattan, which was just lovely, but their wine list was both extensive and deep. What a little classic place wrapped in a piece of history and treating you special. This is a place that should become the next hidden gem for DC. First off, fantastic decor, how could you not dig retro mid century modern Watergate. The ambience is the perfect balance of non kitsch but with good charm and throwback to a different era. Excellent and exceptional service, bar none. Other restaurants, you're on notice. You walk in here and regardless of class or persuaission the staff treat you like kings. Menu is a bit pricey, but it's worth it, even if a bit basic. Fantastic greens, and attention to details even in the simplest salad. Drink menu is pricey, but the Watergate Manhattan is so worth it. No standard glass of wine is under 14 dollars, but what you will have will be considerably well thought out and a great compliment to your meal. Keep an eye out for the barrel aged cocktails, they are extremely popular and go fast. THe butchers block is really a good place to eye, the pork chop is truly big and was cooked to absolute perfection. I really do like this place, it flirts with greatness. The problem is I don't anyone to know. If you eat here you will be seriously taken care of. read more

My husband and I went to Kingbird for brunch this past weekend, and we were blown away. We wanted to try this restaurant since it opened this past summer. After reading reviews on both dinner, dessert, and brunch, we opted to try the brunch - and we were so glad we did! The service here was impeccable, and the decor was extremely pleasing to the eye. We love modern decor, and Kingbird's atmosphere was stellar. We started the meal with the bruleed grapefruit, which complete exceeding our expectations. It was truly one of the best things I've ever tasted, and I would come back here just to order five of these. The tart of the grapefruit paired perfectly with the fruit and granola on top. My husband enjoyed the bottomless drink option, and was especially impressed with the bloody mary. He also enjoyed the crab Benedict. We concluded brunch with a look at the dessert menu, and the milk chocolate brulee was fantastic. Kingbird was one of the best brunches (easily top 3) we've had in DC (and we've had a lot). Very cute date spot. Fairly quiet for our brunch reservations at 1pm. Small menu which is great for those of us who have trouble selecting. Friendly waitresses who checked on us often. I ordered the short rib hash. I asked for the poached egg to be cooked hard because I hate yolks. So, I was disappointed when it was not cooked as asked. But, the rest of the dish was AMAZING. The short rib was tender, juicy and packed with flavor. There was a aioli drizzled on top that added another layer of flavor with the avocado. Super yummy! When it arrived the platter was full of Tomatoes but lacked enough onions, capers, and salmon. Once we compiled the bagel up and took the first bite. We immediately spit it out. I had dinner at the bar at the Kingbird restaurant when I stayed at The Watergate Hotel. Good location downstairs with possibility to sit outside when weather so allow. I didn't go for the set menu even though it looked compelling. I chose instead the burger, medium rare, with a glass of red wine. Very good, but the fries were too much covered with cheese. We went here right before our Wicked show at The Kennedy center. The place is absolutely gorgeous! The seating is a tiny bit cramped tho. We sat at the booth and it was sort of hard to slide in. But it was warm and comfy as the heater runs right along the wall. The waiters were very very accommodating. They asked when our show was and definitely made sure we were not late. The food came out super fast and each did was not compromise. It was amazing, each dish! The bone marrow came with lots and lots of marrow! We've had marrow from many places and they seem to be the most generous with the marrow. We actually ran out of bread first! The mushroom frissee was absolutely awesome! All of the mushrooms were so flavorful! The promme frites aka fries were super awesome and well worth it! Truffle oil? Yes! My wife and I shared the wagyu burger. Yes it's that $24 dollar burger that! Would I pay that much for a burger? Heck yes if it's WAGYU!!!! Not just any burger! And yes it was awesome. It was very succulent and juicy, way different than a normal burger! Is it worth it? Only if you know what you're eating and understand what your paying for! This place was worth the splurge! We went before seeing Hamilton. The service was amazing, the people were friendly. The food was delish. I had the sea bass with spinach, my son had the duck breast with white turnips and crispy ginger pieces. We ordered a side of asparagus! After driving in downtown traffic it was a piece of heaven to sit in a relaxing atmosphere that calmed me instantly. You can enter through the front side of the hotel. Tonight we dined at Kingbird at the Watergate Hotel in DC. We shared a Caesar salad and butternut squash soup, and then we each had the pasta bolognese. This was ribbon pasta, about an inch and a half wide, cut into strips about 3" long, rolled, and covered in a veal and pork ragout, with grana podana sprinkled over the top. The butternut squash soup was outstanding, and we both loved the pasta. For dessert, my husband, Tom, had gelato, which he enjoyed, and I had an almond and pistachio semifrodde with pears - basically, a pistachio cake layered with almond brittle, wine-poached pears, and a delicious pastry cream. It was one of the 10 best desserts I have ever had. We are huge bourbon fans, and we were impressed by the bar's excellent bourbon selection. Also, our server, Jamie, took excellent care of us. She made great recommendations, and was so friendly and helpful! I highly recommend this restaurant. It is an easy walk from the Kennedy Center. We plan to make it a regular part when we go to see a show. read more

My bill was $66.00, I did not know about any additional charges other than my receipt I signed. A few days later I saw a charge for $375 from Kingbird. The sneaky server may have been nice to my face, but you can not trust them. She stole my card information to get additional money and tip. This was my hard earned money and Im in shock that Kingbird would hire someone like this. Brought a party of 14 down from the rooftop after a few hours of HH. The waiter called ahead for us and had a table prepared. They had two waiters and a busser assisting. Great setting and vibe. The filet was a stand out dish for the entree and the scallops for the app. The veal cheeks were decent but not outstanding. The decor is modern and trendy/sexy. Great spot for a date or group. We recently stayed at The Watergate Hotel. (Beautiful, and fabulous service.) Came to Kingbird out of convenience. Expected mediocre hotel restaurant food. We were wrong. The lunch menu is not innovative, but boy, is it delicious. Every morsel was perfectly cooked and presented. Lobster roll was large, meaty, and served on a perfectly toasted, soft, crunchy roll. And now I have to take back my lifetime ban on French fries, because these were the best. Thin and crispy-soft, with just a hint of Parmesan and truffle oil. The service and decor is terrific. I came here for a girlfriend's birthday brunch and it was a really great experience. There were 12 of us and the service did not seem strained as a result of our large party. Unfortunately, I ordered something special and it did not come out correctly; however, they promptly got me what I had originally ordered so I could eat with my party. I hate that restaurants are not mindful of people with dairy allergies. You cannot take for granted the fact that everyone is able to consume cream, dairy, milk, etc. I mean, would you sprinkle surprise bacon on a salad if it didn't disclose it on the menu? No, a vegetarian would literally cry/shit themselves. I ordered the beef brisket hash, which was amazing and the majority of others ordered the chicken and waffles. The beef brisket dish was amazing and apparently the chicken was satisfying but everyone expressed that traditional syrup was a preferred side versus the peanut sauce. Overall, the experience left me with a great feeling and I look foreword to coming back -- the atmosphere is great, sexy and relaxing. The Kingbird definitely does not feel like your typical hotel restaurant. read more

I went here for my 19th birthday and it was wonderful! I had the steak and eggs during brunch and it tasted wonderful. The service was awesome as well. I also got to take good pictures at the hotel. I don't have much to say because overall it was a wonderful experience. I will definitely go back another time. read more

Just had dinner here for the first time and I loved the service. The restaurant wasn't crowded and the drinks and food were great. We ordered from the prix fixe menu and it was tasty and satisfying. Best of all the manager (Raimey) was very friendly and accommodating. Since it was our first time at the restaurant he personally showed us to the roof top which had a 360 view of DC and VA. I will definitely come back here again to check out the rest of their menu. read more

Went to Kingbird yesterday with some family for brunch. I looked over the menu prior to showing up for our reservation and was a little apprehensive as it was limited. Having a select number of entrees can go either way. It can be good, because it takes the guess work out of making a selection, but you can also find that if there's nothing on the menu that you want, (and you have to end up settling on something just because you're there and the thought of leaving is an option that you really don't want to exercise at this point) the likelihood of you returning is slim. So for our table, it was a mixture of both. The food was great. I got the Brisket Hash and it was amazing; not filling, but flavorful. The wait staff was wonderful as well and that is always a huge plus for me and is a determination when decided whether or not to return. We opted for the bottomless drinks (it's great that they let you switch between them all, you don't have to limited to just bottomless sangria, you can have the mimosa, or bloody mary and switch between the three). One person in our party requested a mixture of a regular mimosa, and wanted peach mixed in; we all thought it was a great idea and wanted the same. Our waitress brought freshly squeezed orange juice and peach puree to our table so that we could make our own mix ins when they refilled our glasses with the champagne; which was quite often-they mean bottomless. That was very much appreciated. Our waitress was leaving for the day and so of course our table gets handed off to the next and he was just as awesome as our initial waitress. We had a late guest who decided to join us almost an hour after the fact. He ensured his experience was just as great as ours even tho brunch was coming to an end (actually 15 minutes beyond). He expressed that he wanted him to get to enjoy the mimosas (as much as time would allow) to be fair. That too was very much appreciated. The service could get no better. Although we all left feeling like the menu could have had more options, we would definitely return based on our experience. It was such a pleasurable one. read more

We came with our friends before seeing a show at the Kennedy Center and ordered the pre-theatre menu with the expectation we would be done in time for our 7:30pm show. Though we were 5 minutes late to our 5:45pm reservation, it took the waiter 20 minutes to come take our order even after we flagged him down once. When I asked him for recommendations, he basically just read me the menu, which wasn't helpful. We got out appetizers at 6:30pm, our main course by 7pm and at 7:15pm we got our desserts and requested the check. By this time, we were very nervous we would be late. Even though we paid our group meal with one card to speed up the process, the waiter took a tremendously long time to give us back the check and we ended up running to the theater... still unable to be seated until after the first scene, and having to watch it from the screen outside. You would think that the *pre-theatre* menu would be able to accommodate those who have a show to watch and/or the waiter would be mindful of that fact and speed up the process as necessary. Aside from that nightmare, the food was sub-par. The only reason why it even has a star was because the ambiance of the restaurant is nice. The appetizers (steak tartare and crab fritters) were probably the least disappointing. For the main course, the scallops were overcooked and chewy, the sea bass tasted way too "fishy" (and I love fish!!) and the mushrooms it came with were so salty. For dessert, the madeleines were kind of dry, and the sugar over the creme brulee was so burnt it was too bitter. read more

Went for dinner with a group of friends last night. The restaurants decoration and atmosphere was nice. I would say a little under 50% of the restaurant was full. Sat at the bar waiting for the rest of our party to arrive. Bartender was cordial and got my drink quickly. Once at the table, we ordered our drinks which arrived 20 minutes from ordering. Our appetizers came another 30 minutes after ordering and the main course took another 30 minutes to arrive after ordering. I tasted the following: Hamachi crudo - presentation was nice, but it could've had a little more flavor. Slow cooked cauliflower - good flavor Crescent Farms Duck Breast - good flavor Charred Octopus Campanelle - The pasta was flavorful, but the octopus was extremely salty and not edible Frites truffle parmesan - ok flavor Charred broccoli - good flavor The food overall was ok, but its not a restaurant I would return again for the food. Once the food was taken away, it took them a while to offer dessert menus and even longer to get the desserts. The 3 and a half hour dinner experience was one of the slowest services I have experienced at any restaurant in the USA. read more
