Had dinner here and expected live music, but the performer on a Sunday night was a one-man band with a drum machine. Very disappointing, considering this is Beale St. After we were seated, a tour bus dropped off a few dozen customers who marched in and lined the tables which had been reserved for them in the room by the stage. My boyfriend and I visited Beale Street for the first time this evening (Saturday around 6p). We initially stopped by another restaurant to eat, but there was a wait, so we decided to try another restaurant. We decided on King's Palace Cafe. We approached the Greeter who welcomed us in with a smile. Little did we know the Greeter would also be our Waitress. She was the only Waitress tending to the customers indoors but she welcomed everyone with the same big smile and great customer service! She even took the time to give us a brief lesson on Memphis style BBQ. The food was good as well. I had the Fried Catfish and my boyfriend had the BBQ Chicken; even the vegetables were seasoned perfectly. Visited here while walking on Beale Street. We originally planned to visit the Absinthe Cafe next door, but came here when the bouncer told us that they didn't have food. The first thing that we noticed was the truly excellent guitarist playing a range of blues standards. Once we sat down, our server stopped by to take our drink orders, and then we waited. It seemed on the night we came that they were a short staffed, so we ended up waiting a while for everything we ordered, and a couple tables who came in after us were able to get their food before us, which was frustrating. Once our plates finally came, the portions were large, which was good, but neither me nor my friend were blown away by the food, especially considering the wait. I think the only thing I'd really recommend here is the award winning gumbo, but there's a chef's platter where you can sample everything, which is probably the best option. Honestly I was kind of disappointed, and the only saving grace was the skill of the guitarist. Come here if you want a drink and some good music. Maybe try elsewhere if you're looking for a meal, but they do have a pretty epic story about how their "award winning gumbo" became award winning. read more

My partner and I went here after seeing Riverdance at the Orpheum. I picked it because it came up as a gluten friendly option and I am celiac. The place itself has good music and eclectic decor. That is really all I can say. When we were given our menus I asked our waitress was was gluten free. She said the BBQ chicken and Pork. It seemed odd to me since they listed grilled salmon on the menu. I asked what was on the salmon to make it have gluten and she said she needed to go ask. When she returned she said the salmon was fine. We ordered and another table of four was seated behind us. After ten minutes they had their food while my partner and I still waited. I thought, at first, it was my gluten free meal until it was brought put with bread lying almost on top of the salmon and yellow rice 15 minutes later. I immediately told the waitress it was contaminated since I am severely celiac. She apologized and went to have it remade. It came back in four minutes, which was odd since it took almost half of an hour to make initially. When she placed it on the table I noticed the yellow rice was bow white. Looks like I really bit the bullet on that one since I would have been hospitalized if I had eaten it and had the bread not been put on the plate I would have believed that the yellow rice was fine. I took one bite of the salmon and spat the it out. It was cold on the inside! The waitress apologized and said the manager was now back and would make the dinner for me. So after another five minutes they brought out a third meal the was even smaller and taste like rubber. I didn't eat it and was annoyed that with so many screwup they didn't even comp the meal. 20 bucks for rubber! Other annoyances were having to ask for silverware and her recommending a BBQ sauce to my partner and never bringing it. We will not be going back! read more

Awful! This place was a disgrace to Memphis BBQ. The bartender tried to discourage me from ordering food because it was close to closing time. I had a meat platter that came with ribs, pulled pork, potatoes, and coleslaw. The ribs were so over cooked the were crispy on the outside and dry. The pulled pork was super dry. I'm not sure what they're trying to accomplish with the potatoes, but they were disgusting. The coleslaw was OK but the portion was so small there wasn't much to enjoy. I had a bacon and cheese stuffed shrimp appetizer that was slightly better than the entree but still over cooked. I should have listened to the bartenders advice. Clearly the kitchen took no pride in the food they put out. What a shame.... The one positive was that I did get a nice strong drink! read more

We were looking for a place to eat on Beale Street on a sweltering August. We would have settled for anything that advertised air conditioning, but the guy who manned the outdoor podium convinced us to eat at King's Palace Cafe without knowing anything about the place. The man did us a solid. An entirely satisfying lunch in a charming place. We ate the Cajun chicken salad, crawfish tails and a scrumptious bowl of etouffee. We also drank about a gallon of the most refreshing sweet tea- not too sweet; absolutely ice cold. And our waitress was amazing. The check said her name was Rae and she was the only one working when we were there. But we didn't have to wait for anything; she even have us cups to take our drinks with is to keep us cool. I would have paid a lot more for that meal; it was quite reasonable. read more

I like this place because it has an old school white table cloth restaurant with blues hall feel! I have tried a few things here and nothing really blew me away except for the Cajun chicken pasta...it is really good has a lot of spicy to it with a smokey flavor. Get the half order unless you are starving because the whole portion is huge!! We usually go in late night and grab a spot at the bar and chat with Hawk the bartender. He is a great guy and you will have some interesting conversation with him...this is a great last stop to wind before you head home. read more

Is it because I went there on Labor Day weekend? I don't know, but I think most of us have had this experience. You see the sign that says "Please wait to be seated," and you wait. And wait. And wait, as you wonder if anyone is working there, and yet you see several tables with people at them. 5 minutes later, some waitress passes by on her way to a table, and says that someone will be right with you. 5 more minutes and someone seats you. And you just go with it. Then you're sitting at the table and 5 minutes pass by and a waitress finally comes over and says in a surprised manner "Oh, has someone helped you yet"? That would be a "no," and isn't this your section, and therefore shouldn't you know? What kind of establishment is this anyway. And you just go with it. You order your food, and make the mistake of asking if they can do poached eggs. If they have to go back to the kitchen and ask, it's a bad sign. But you just go with it. Then, 45 minutes after placing your order, and looking around and seeing only about 3-4 other tables, you say to the waitress "it's been a really really long time, is our food coming soon?" Oh yeah, the other people at that table have been waiting a long time too. Thanks for pointing that out. This is the moment where you ask yourself if you should stay and wait it out, because if you go somewhere else at this point, you will just be waiting even longer. The right decision is really to get up and walk the fuck out. But did we do that? No, of course not. We waited 5 more minutes, my friend's order was wrong, of course, and the food was mediocre at best. My friend never did get her fries. Oh well, no tip, and my friend left some comment on the bill. And of course, we get 3 blocks away and she realizes that she left her hat there, and I have to go back and get it. Ugh. I should have known though, that when I went back to our table, there's the bill, still not picked up!!! I found the hat on the floor next to one of the chairs, and walked away into the hot Memphis morning thinking about customer service and the sometimes extreme lack thereof. read more
