When visiting Kent, CT, stopping by the Kingsley Tavern is a must. This quaint and cozy tavern housed creative dishes and thoughtful cocktails. The pub curated a vibe that perfectly matched its small-town location. The adorable front porch overlooked the bustling street and was a perfect spot to enjoy your fare and spirits. My martini was stirred, then strained into a tall glass with a thin rim and stem chilled with ice cubes. It was embellished with flavorful castlevetrano olives, which you don't often see served with a martini, but refined the cocktail and experience. The bar was made of stainless steel, and local sports memorabilia decorated the walls. All the food I ordered was superb; from the house-made lemon salad dressing to the perfectly cooked burger on a sesame seed bun, it was all fresh and delicious. This spot is absolutely worth the trip, and the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating! Read more on IG: themartinibible

Kingsley Tavern is one of my very favorite places to dine out in Kent, CT. The owner, Anna, takes great care to provide locally-sourced food, and each dish is always packed with flavor. The expansion of the space in recent years has been a bonus so more inside seating is now available. We recently visited to have some burgers and chose the Newton-McCann Farm grass-fed burgers. These are from cows raised on the family farm that is located a few miles down the road and has been in the family for multiple generations. It is really awesome to enjoy truly local food. Anna also works closely with local vegetable farms and proudly shares which farms are partner-providers. With several vegetarians in our family, Kingsley is a place where everyone can find meals that tempt the palate. During a past visit, I enjoyed the vegan coconut ginger chickpea and lentil stew that includes basmati rice, cilantro-raisin chutney, scallions, cilantro and herbs that make it jam-packed with flavor. Dessert is always a treat there and my chocolate cravings are always satisfied with the chocolate Guinness cake that includes dark chocolate cake, served warm, with Jameson caramel and Bailey's whipped cream.

Shrimp & Grits and Grit Cakes! Amazing!

This restaurant never ceases to serve a great meal. Friendly service, great choices, great drinks, but our food was a tad cold. I had the Jerk Chicken Breast on a bed of beans and rice, with fried plantains. The perfect dish that tasted great apart, and mixed to gather, sweet, savory, and a delicious piece of protein, that was perfectly cooked, but not as hot as it should have been. Good thing it was delicious. My husbands dish, which was Shrimp and Grits, with perfect and savory Grit Cakes, was just amazing, but he complained that his food was also cold. We are not the type to complain during our dining experience, because it's a real downer for each other. But we did comment on the way home. Our only guess as to why it happened was because our server had left alone for protracted periods of time, and even apologized at the end for abandoning us. It was really no problem. She was doing double duty as front of house, and working as server. My guess is that she left the dishes sitting under the heating lamps, if there are any at all. But we have no real forensics to solve this mystery! I encourage the amazing staff and owner to be careful about the temperature of the food, because it's really too good not to serve at the optimal temperature. It would have been even better if the heat of the Jerked Chicken spices and the hotter temperature gave it an extra bite to unlock the spices. I rated four stars because we love Kingsley Tavern, and it is without a doubt one of the best eateries in Northwest Connecticut, and a true institution. Don't delay, and try their Jerked Chicken dish. It's just that good!

Walking around town, we looked up on Yelp a place to have lunch. (With dog in tow). We were greeted quickly and seated outside soon after. We ordered the calamari app which was really good. Loved the dipping sauce. My husband had a locally made draft beer that he really liked. I asked the waiter for something fruity to drink and he delivered a delicious refreshing drink. I had a grilled romaine salad with tofu bites, cherries, hazelnuts and It was a lite refreshing Salad. My husband had the avocado tacos and really liked them. We would totally come back when in town

Just had a nice lunch at Kingsley Tavern. Inside with nice dividers between tables. It was a rainy day and the place wasn't too crowded so we sat inside. They have 2 small tables in the front under the covered porch and a few tables in the courtyard (uncovered). My husband had the French dip and I ordered the Cobb salad. Both were solid and we'll definitely come back! The French dip was a bit small but good for lunch. I asked for moseyed greens with the cobb salad - it had a sprinkling but mixed greens but mostly to hide the mostly romaine below. The shrimp and grits and soups looked good. Sad to see the coffee and chocolate shop at the corner went out of business. We have to start eating out more to support our much loved towns. This is the first time we've visited Kent since COVID lockdowns.

Enjoyable meal for my wife's birthday. The service was very good and we were able to make a reservation. Food was very tasty especially the pumpkin soup and grilled cheese. Jerk chicken was good as well. Was disappointed they did not have the curry mussels as I heard this was a big hit and really wanted it.

Dined for the first time here! I have only been here for drinks at the bar and always thought the food I saw others order looked really good. And in fact, it was! The grilled cheese had a wonderful cheese pull and perfect sourdough bread. The chips were fresh and crunchy. I tried my boyfriends pasta and it was the perfect flavor of crab with a light tomato sauce. We tried the hot chocolate and wow was that decadent! It was like dessert in a warm cup. Unfortunately I don't really love the espresso martinis! The menu is also a bit pricey which is fine because you get really good food. But I will say I have never been to a place that you had to pay for dinner bread! For $2 you get 2 warm rolls. It does not come complimentary which is okay but it's weird that even if you order the $36 pasta, the bread doesn't come free. That being said the bread was warm and tasty. Looking forward to trying other items next time. I'm also want to add that the staff has always been warm and friendly! And everything is always very clean.

A classic and a newbie - both were perfecto!

A Community Venue Changed…read more The Egremont Barn, now operating as Buttonball Barn, was once a cornerstone of local music and community gathering. Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. The Egremont Barn once represented collaboration, music, and mutual respect. Under its current ownership, that spirit appears to have shifted toward aesthetics and revenue at the expense of community and care. I encourage readers to proceed with caution, ask detailed questions, and ensure all expectations are clearly documented in writing before booking events there.

Still really good food…read more Returned to this location to see if they were still doing well. Got a full English breakfast special, minus the blood sausage. Also ordered a mocktail of a basil lemonade. The drink was not too sweet and the basil added a tiny touch of herby savoryness which was a nice accent flavor. The full English breakfast was cooked well, good quality ingredients and each element was seasoned appropriately. I could only make a small dent in the dish before sending it back satisfied. The server was friendly, but I threw them off with my quirky behavior. Lead to a little slower service and multiple requests for some items. Nothing against the establishment, just something that happened during my visit. Still a strong recommendation for Main Street, and worth a trek to try.

I'm back! I love this place! It's quiet here ) it's only a Tuesday) but we're late (arrived at 9:15…read morePM). There is no shortage of decor here! I like the huge carafe of ice water and the spicy potato chips! For my first drink, I'm having a Negroni. A negroni is an Italian cocktail, made of equal parts gin, vermouth rosso (red, semi-sweet), and Campari, generally served with ice, and commonly garnished with an orange slice or orange peel. It is considered an apéritif. They also have an Obi Wan Negroni made with Cold Brew Infused Campari instead. For my first food item, I'm having the Cream of Mushroom soup with chicken. Cream of mushroom soup is a simple type of soup where a basic roux is thinned with creamor milk and then mushrooms or mushroom brothare added. This is delicious! It's nice and hot with a lot of shredded chicken. For my entree, I'm having the Brussels Sprout Salad made with shaved Brussels sprouts, spring mix, bacon, pomegranate drizzle, silvered almonds, shaved Parmesan and lemon vinaigrette dressing. Look at the height of this! This tastes great! I am also having a side of mushy peas. Mushy peas are a traditional British side dish of marrowfat peas that are cooked until soft and mashed into a mush. The dish is especially popular in Northern England and the Midlands, and often eaten with fish and chips or served as part of "pie and peas". Here's a quick overview of mushy peas: Ingredients** Traditionally made with dried marrowfat peas, but can be substituted with frozen peas or green split peas. I love this! It's nice and hot.,What a rare treat! This is hard to find anywhere! I'm also having a side of cold slaw. Coleslaw, or "slaw" in North America, is a side dish of shredded cabbage with a vinaigrette or mayo-based dressing. The word "coleslaw" comes from the Dutch term koolsla, meaning "cabbage salad". Recipes vary by region and can include additional ingredients like carrots, apples, raisins, or celery. Coleslaw originated in the Netherlands in the 18th century, but references to similar cabbage salads appear in ancient Greek and Roman medical texts. This is the best! Nice, thick dressing! For my last drink, I'm having a Godfather. The Godfather is a sweet and strong cocktail that blends Scotch whisky and amaretto liqueur. It's typically served in an old-fashioned glass over ice and can be garnished with an orange twist. The drink became popular in the 1970s disco scene and is named after the 1972 film starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Some say bartender Joe Scialom created the Godfather to capture the movie's spirit. This is done just right! Good job! What a great meal here!

In no particular order, the service is incredibly slow from the time you order until you get your food and then the check. I will point out that their Black n' Tans are always warm. Supposed to be cool or chilled -- yet to actually 'enjoy' one! My biggest complaint is that there are A LOT of drunks, derelicts and seedy people in there no matter when you go! They're loud, intoxicated, incessantly swearing (as does most of the bar staff), and just rude to listen to and be around. That IS what this place is!
