    The yummiest chicken wings!
    Alyzza A.

Such a fun, no-frills spot for live blues and a good time. The energy here is contagious -- two stages going, talented musicians rotating all night, and a crowd that's clearly here for the music. The real surprise of the night? The wings. I came for the tunes, not the food, and somehow ended up raving about the wings -- perfectly cooked, still crispy even after being tossed in sauce (rare win at a live-music joint). Drinks were reasonably priced with a big selection -- nothing pretentious, just solid pours and quick service. Overall, Kingston Mines nails the classic Chicago blues experience: loud, lively, and a little gritty in the best way. Would absolutely come back for another round of wings and live sets.

Food was 3 out of 5 and music was 6 or even 7 out of 5 if one can do so lol. I don't think it's appropriate to rate this establishment based on its food because it was designed to be a Blues club, and what I heard last night was absolutely amazing! Both Omar Coleman's band and Nicholas Alexander (Lil Hoochie) were outstanding at delivering both traditional Blues music and a purely sensational instrumental performance! In terms of entertainment, this establishment had outdone itself in allowing the crowd to feel some true Blues music and dance if they want to. Food prices were reasonable so we ordered quite a few soul food items ranging from beignets to fried okra to fried catfish, and all of them were good in quality with no highlights to offer. The fried okra, comparatively, was fried well because the outer layer wasn't too overpowering in flavor or texture. The okra softness was successfully maintained. On the opposite end were the fries, which were way too small and crunchy, and as a result became the worst dish among everything else. Oh, the cornbread also had the right amount of butter, which was also a plus. If anyone asks me a club with good Blues music to recommend, I would, without a doubt, mention this establishment as the first choice! I must also mention that everyone in the club, ranging from the servers to the bartenders to the security guards to the kitchen workers in the back taking orders, has been extremely courteous and considerate, so from a service perspective that's also a huge plus!

We went here to celebrate our anniversary, joined by our kids. We absolutely loved it. The music was really good and the atmosphere was fun. The food was a ho-hum, but it did the trick. The service and drinks were great, especially the ginger beer and warm apple cider. From the outside, I always thought it would be a bit rough. But it turned out to be wonderful inside. With a great honky-tonk vibe with some really good blues. If you've never gone, be sure to give it a try. Everybody in our group loved it.

Come for the music, stay for the food! They sold out of the ribs this time unfortunately but the fried okra and wings were fire.

This place had some awesome blues music. We loved it. The place gets really crowded, so get there early for seats. We ended up sitting at the bar and then up front. We had drinks and good food. I had the blackened catfish which was super good. Price is right. Small dance floor areas are nice which we took advantage of. We will definitely be back.

I loved this place! The perfect place to come to with some friends or family to drink, eat good fried food, and listen to some blues. The staff here was really kind and the music was amazing! So much seating and lots of options to choose from for food and drinks - they have a great dry menu for non-alcoholic drinkers! I definitely will be coming back with a larger group.

One of the last true Blues clubs in America! (I don't know how many are left but I travel a ton and there are not many) Open late with 2 rooms and food! The best blues players in the world have come through The Mines! A great meet up spot with friends!!! Guaranteed an amazing 1 of a kind experiences!!

I am surprised I haven't been here before. I came on a Sunday night so it wasn't too crowded, but the music and the drinks were flowing. I liked the whole vibe and every worker seemed happy to be there! I wish mi group stayed there a little longer, but I will be back. Just a FYI, they charge a cover. That's not too surprising since you have some great live music. They take credit cards as well for cover which is a big plus!

    Great performance

Really fun atmosphere with lots of great history! Laid back vibes with great music. The bartenders were all very nice. Can't wait to come back next time I am in Chicago!

This place is my roman empire. I wish I could be here all the time. It's Chicago in a nutshell. Always a good time at Kingston Mines. This is the only spot in the city I'll actually pay the cover. The talent is limitless...real effing music. Two stages allow you to choose your environment - whether it be watching the show on one side, enjoying a more chill vibe on the other side or devouring food in the back by the kitchen. Service depends on how friendly you are, be a decent human and you'll be treated that way! Drinks are reasonably priced.

Love this place! I use to come here all the time when I was growing up in Chicago and tonight didn't disappoint! My brother and I hadn't been here since the 80's! The music was great and the food was better than I remember! This brought back so many great memories! I can't wait to come back in October for my Smart Set Conclave!

Kingstons mines is a Chicago staple featuring great live music. It's situated in Lincoln park and because of that parking is a little hard. They have street parking or valet. I'm not a fan of valet, so SpotHero came handy as I found an uncovered lot about two blocks away. The way it works is that music starts at 7am and goes late into the night (as late as 4-5am). Admission is $20 per person. You can buy tickets online but they charge a convenience fee so you can just buy it at the venue with the fee. I suggest getting there earlier, maybe before 10pm. The place gets really busy afterwards. The venue is split in two. Basically you have alternating sets. People walk from the left side of the venue to the right and it can get packed. I think there's also a tiny stage in the back, but that band usually only plays super early. We had cocktails and they were pretty good. Plenty of different specialty and traditional cocktails are on the menu. The price is around $10-15$ a cocktail. Waiting staff is very attentive despite the place being so packed and loud. Didn't try the food but we might next time and there will be a next time. If you want a night out and enjoy some great music and let loose this is the place.

It took 20 minutes and $25 each way to Uber there from my hotel in downtown Chicago, as it is 6 miles away. However, totally worth it. Yes ... it's cash only. That's a bit of a bummer. I'd rather pay a surcharge than trust the sketchy little ATM in the bar. Yes ... It's 'lived in'. I wouldn't call it dirty as much as it is worn. To me, this was part of the charm. It's been around since the 1920's and probably looks very similar to how it did in the 1940's. Dark, dingy and fun. Most of the mafia in Chicago didn't hang out downtown. This area is where their HQ was and where most of them congregated in the same way NY's mafia hung out in Bensonhurst instead of Manhattan. The area has a lot of vintage architecture and history, despite being a little more run down and 'authentic' than the more touristy downtown. I went on a Friday around 3:30 p.m. Already, the back seating area was full of people, however there were a few bar seats left in the front. An hour later, it was packed. They start charging a $20 (cash only) cover at 7 p.m. for the live band. Before that was a jazz organist, who was pretty good and a master at working the crowd. They have draft beer ($6 - $10) ... bottled beer ... and booze. My Old Fashioned was made with muddled orange and cherries and only cost $12. A gin and tonic was $9. It can be tough to get a drink because the one bartender works the entire bar. Nice guy though. Don't come here expecting anything other than a dive bar ... there is nothing modern about this place. However, it has one of the best vintage vibes I've honestly ever encountered in a jazz bar. Don't miss out on seeing this bar and hearing some music, even if it means having to Uber or drive. It will be worth the trip. There aren't many places around like this anymore.

A spot where someone could walk in, maybe order a drink, and listen to some music without first opening Ticketmaster and shelling out half your paycheck to their junk fees. Some of their performances are free, and some have a reasonable cover of $10-20. There are also performances every night, sometimes even in the afternoon. The vibe inside is dimly lit and very old-timey. Even the bathroom had a bar of soap! I haven't seen a bar outside of a private residence! For sure, the vibe fits the history. Green Mill used to be a spot visited by Big Al himself. Yes, there are still connected tunnels used by the mob, no, you cannot see them. In terms of the bar, do not expect anything special. Their menu is limited to the beers, wines, and champagnes they have. They have spirits, but no cocktail menu - while they *might* be able to mix something simple like a Manhattan, be prepared for basic drinks along the lines of a gin & tonic. The service was fine, but a little abrupt. Not the best welcoming or inviting, but gruff and surly in a way that is probably cute to regulars, but less so to newcomers like myself. Final verdict: Green Mill is a place one comes for the music and the vibe and to get away from life for a little bit. It appears to be a third place for many regulars. It's worth giving a shot, as long as one is ready for an experience that's a little rough around the edges, arguably by design.

I have to admit, the place is waaaaay bigger on the inside than expected. There's a large u-shaped bar with nice lighting, some small high-top tables and chairs, a stage toward the back for the live jazz and blues bands, and even a lounge area with a fireplace and cozy chairs & end tables. Cute and trendy, a nice place for a date. The servers are prompt and friendly. But we ordered Stoli and sodas and pretty much got huge glasses of just vodka on the rocks. I'm not convinced the bartenders really know how to mix a drink, but I'll try a different cocktail next time (although it's kinda hard to mess up a Stoli and soda, right?). The flyer for Dirtty's says in big, bold letters "Adults 40 and Up" which could be just the kind of vibe your looking for, or maybe not your thing at all. Either way, they're very up front about it. My friend happens to be 30 and joked the whole night about being upset that she wasn't carded. C'est la vie. Currently they are open Thursday through Sunday and charge a reasonable $5 cover. Our drinks were $7 each, which is also reasonable considering it was a giant glass of vodka. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Dirtty's and will probably be back. Since they just recently opened, I will forgive the mediocre drink and hope for the best next time. It really is a cute place to enjoy a cocktail with friends and hear some live music by the fire.

Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Lonnie Liston Smith, Hugh Masekela, Dexter Gordon, etc. (those are my favorites!). I saw the Kyle Swan Quartet. They were absolutely amazing. You see young and seasoned musicians that are so talented. I usually go to Birdland in NYC but this place, Jazz Showcase, is better to me because it feels more welcoming and like home here versus a production at a theater. We interact with the artists here-- well, they interact with us and make us feel like we are at home and like we are supposed to be there with them, not a performance transaction. $25+ for a show and booking online was a breeze. I found myself in Rogers Park for two days for my daughter's freshman orientation at Loyola. Of course, my number one concern after the first day of seminars was to find somewhere awesome to eat that evening. After extensive searching throughout the day, I believed I had settled on somewhere to go... that is until the front desk attendant of my hotel handed me a sheet of recommended places to check out in the area. Normally, I will just explore and research on my own to figure out somewhere to go. Despite the many exciting choices nearby, of which I almost settled on Ethiopian or Cambodian, I stumbled on Le Piano; and my oh my, I couldn't be happier that I did. Looking at the listed provided by the hotel, Le Piano was in a small section titled "music, food, bar" and specifically labeled as jazz. Taking a minute to hit up their website, I found that night that Gerry Hundt, a blues artist I didn't know was going to be playing. My interest already now piqued, I rushed over to the menu, which is awash in wonderful sounding continental and French classics made local and fit for a jazz bar. The cocktail menu also matches, but is also incredibly extensive and has a very interesting Victorian flair. It was at this point I was sold, and booked a seat immediately to head out that evening. Arriving, I found this to be one of the coolest spaces I have ever been to for music. Styled perfectly with a dark Victorian-yet-jazzy flair, and intimate, my assigned seat was allowed to be changed to an amazingly worn leather loveseat, like something out of a noir film, with a single taper lighting my table. The bartender and my server made a point of giving me their names, which I believe were Chris and Steven, but I can't remember because my memory is Swiss cheese, but they were both amazing, talking with me and being completely engaged with me as a Chicago newbie. This doesn't even include the perfect sazerac and jasmine that Chris made to round out the artichoke fritters I ordered. The fritters were outstanding. Barely breaded and flash fried to perfection and one of the best fried dishes I've had in years, as I don't prefer that type of thing. Steven's recommendation was seriously on point. If a spot like this existed near me, I would be there weekly. If I lived in Chicago, Le Piano wouldn't be able to get rid of me. Don't pass on this place and get there now! Enjoy some wonderful music, legendary drinks, and outstanding food!
