Last time we came to Kinjo we had the omakase (which was excellent and well priced). This time we decided to try dining in the bar/lounge. This time, we didn't love our cocktails as much. But the food was great. The make your own temaki handroll set - excellent. Nori, rice, a selection of fish and toppings. Mmm. We ordered extra nori. Could have done with a bit more avo, too. The tataki was nice, but not the dish of the night. The eggplant was the surprise standout. Absolutely delicious, and at $12, awesome value. We got another plate. Service was attentive and eager to please. The interiors are funky, low lit. Cool music. Perfect for a date. Overall, not the cheapest night out ($180 for 4 small dishes, 2 cocktails, 1 beer, tip), but good value and great quality. I think this might become a regular. read more

Wonderful Omakase experience! The restaurant is beautiful and the seating area for the tasting was very cool. The staff was warm, welcoming and professional. The food was amazing. We went to Kinjo with some friends for omakase, and it was absolutely phenomenal. The menu rotates quarterly, which keeps things interesting, and I loved the mix of onigiri and other creative bites; it felt fresh and different from other omakase experiences in the city. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the otoro was the standout of the night for me. I also really enjoyed the sawara and the extra piece of Hokkaido uni we added at the end (highly recommend!). Even though I'm not usually a dessert person, I loved the black sesame custard; it was such a pleasant surprise. The whole experience felt intimate and personal, with a chef preparing food just for the four of us. If I had one small complaint, it's that we didn't leave feeling completely full, and the price is definitely on the higher side given the portion sizes. But the uniqueness of the menu and the non-rushed experience more than make up for it. They also have a great bar and lounge area separate from the omakase counter. The cocktail menu is small but excellent; every drink we tried was beautifully balanced. They even have a Doritos flavored shot, which is absolutely awful but worth trying once for the novelty. Solid omakase. Some unusual omakase dishes like monkfish liver, curry-infused ebi, and even duck, which I wasn't such a fan of. But anything simple nigiri was fresh and good. Our sushi chef Gary was so kind and made delicious uni nigiri, king salmon, zuke with a mashed-pear topping, and toro scallion hand rolls. He was generous too, replacing my duck with the hand roll without even asking if he could. The omakase is $85 each which is a better price than most, but the catch is that you don't feel totally full at the end, so with three nigiri add-ons, we paid over $300, which was way more than it was worth. The location by the water and the atmosphere feels intimate, earthy, and casual. Loved the refreshing maple-miso chocolate pana cotta. Not rushing back, but glad I tried it. read more

Kinjo just recently opened in DUMBO with great location and even better food! The service was great and so was the vibe of the restaurant, it was very intimate but still a semi-open space. We had the winter tasting menu and everything was amazing. The otoro and duck specifically stuck out to me. The only thing I didn't love was the uni, but that is just personal preference. And even the way they served it on warm rice made it more appealing than uni usually is to me. The sushi chef is plating right behind the counter in front of you making the experience even more interactive and enjoyable. I think this spot will be a big success and I would recommend and hope to return. read more

The location is very cool, with a cozy happening bar scene in front and a theatrically cozy and comfortable dining area in back. Watching the top-rated chefs prepare out-of-this-world sushi and sashimi makes this a great experience. The service running up and down the room took care of every empty glass and finished plate. So one of my best frieds decided to surprise his wife with an outing to Kinjo. The guests other than the guest of honor arrived little early, we sat in the lounge area and conversed for a while. It was nice ambiance. We finally were taken to the sushi bar and finally began the Kinjo experience. We were served in linear fashsion, eight amazing dishes starting with the Smoked King Salmon. Now I wanted to review this place and I also wanted to enjoy the meal and interact with everyone. We sometimes forget to immerse ourselves in the experience unfolding in front of us. The conversations, the smells, the movement of the chef preparing and plating the meal and enjoying the presentation.. Its an experince that happens once and no type of recording will bring that memeory back. Which leads into my next point. I took some pictures but enjoyed the meal even more. I dont have as many pictures of all the platings we were graciously served. But I did want to highlight the amazing experience we had. Also as the night drew darker, the lounge took on a sureal appearance. The night lighting came on, the lounge began to fill up and the place became very lively. We thought we made a res for the omakase but it was actually only for the cocktail hour, so we only got the try to apps. Will come back for the omakase! The selection of apps was limited, but everything was very tasty. Our favorites were the fish dishes, which were very high quality. At the price point however, I do feel like some of the dishes felt like they were just lacking a little oomph, the tuna in the donburi could've used a bit more soy sauce, the yakisoba could've used a bit more acid or salt. We had already been blown away by the omakase, so we decided to try the regular restaurant attached (the space is divided in two, with separate chefs). They don't normally serve full meals, just delicious bar snacks like duck fried rice, but we got lucky on Valentine's! What a meal. Four courses for $70. Here's hoping it becomes a regular event!
