They make all their own icecream in shop which is so nice! My son got the cookie and cream which he absolutely loved and I got the toffee iced coffee. I am Gluten free so I couldn't try his ice cream but it looked yummy. I was really in the mood for a vanilla with Reese cups in it but the lady told me that they didnt make that flavor today so that's why I got the coffee and it was delicious! We had a wonderful first time here the other evening. I had a particularly tough day and was in the need of an ice cream, so my mom and I took the dog out for a ride and went to the closest shop. Kips had good reviews and has been around a long time, and we went in and didn't know what to expect. The place is dog themed- and dog friendly (outside not inside please!) which I didn't know before we went, but the menu items and dexor reflect that theme. They will post a photo of your dog on the wall if you bring it in, and for each item you order they will give you an ice cream cup for your pup! I don't have pictures because a dog leash and an ice cream didn't allow for photography- but I got a featured flavor called "walnuts and gromit" (a play on Wallace and Gromit the characters one of whom is a dog) and it was delicious. Wanuts and vanilla ice cream with butterscotch and butterscotch chips. My mom got a pecan ball with hot fudge. We also ordered my sister two scoops of 101 chocolate chips to go. I grew up with Kip's as our local ice cream shop. To this day, I still crave their Phantom Fudge ice cream almost weekly! Phantom Fudge is homemade dark chocolate ice cream with fudge swirls throughout... delicious! Their homemade waffle cones are thick, vanilla-y, and perfectly crunchy- my favorite in the area for sure. Two things that bother me since it's the 21st century: 1) They ONLY take cash! For a single scoop on a waffle cone, it's $4. My boyfriend and I usually spend $8-$10 there and it's annoying that we can't use a card. Sometimes we choose a different ice cream shop solely for that reason. They do have an ATM inside, but no one wants to pay the fees! 2) I haven't noticed any dairy free options. This place has literally gone to the dogs but in a good way! Named for the German Shepherd Kip who passed away about 4 years back Kip's sits in a strip mall in Coraopolis near Armstrongs. Inside there are movie posters, pictures, and models of dogs everywhere. You can even bring in a picture of your own dog and they will hang it on the bulletin board! Now onto the ice cream. All of their ice cream with the exception of no sugar ones are homemade and they do have specialty ice creams. The specialty ones rotate out periodically. My girlfriend and I each decided to get one of their specialty's that consisted of black raspberry with chocolate chips.Ours was called "rollover rover" limited edition. This place is cash only and when I inquired as to why I was told that was the owner's decision. My impression is that is must be like a similar place I recently visited that since the ice cream is inexpensive it is not worth the credit card fee. However, if you come without cash there is an ATM right inside so you can get the needed funds. There really isn't anyplace to sit indoors. There are a couple of benches outside which made it handy for us to enjoy our sweet treat. Yes, they have a rewards card too. After 7 purchases then you are entitled to one free scoop of ice cream. the ice cream was indeed very rich and filling and portion size was generous for two scoops. Please note that bottled water is available for sale. There are no fountains. There's lots of flavors to choose from and of course you can have your ice cream made in all the traditional ways. This is my first five star rating and I gotta tell you, if I could give the Kipper more I would! All of the ice cream is homemade, sweet creamery mounds of divinity, infused with candy or nuts or fruit and plenty of L-O-V-E. After a long flight from the West coast we stopped here for a little pick-me-up. Small tastes revealed so many options I grew dizzy at the thought but settled on some concoction with peanut butter cups and chocolate lacing throughout. Sis got her usual, vanilla with big, fat cherries, simple and straightforward like an early Beatles tune. The top of the pops had to go to the Pumpkin pecan, a layered revelation of pumpkin, spices and crunchy pecans, so good it made forget about jet-lag, terrorism and the sound of falling stocks. The first and only time I have ever been here, I walked inside the little front area to hear a dark-haired, older woman very loudly talking to someone on the phone. I quickly gathered she was an owner or manager, and the person on the phone was an upset customer. As I waited for my chocolate milkshake, I realized I was not just in an ice cream shop, but in a theater, with the owner/manager/performer on her stage. Though standing two steps away from a backroom door where she could have had a quiet and private phone conversation, she chose to stand in the middle of the main room, facing the customers, to be heard and seen by whoever walked in. She kept maintaining eye contact with me and the two other female customers standing near me, while she shouted, dramatically scoffed, and gave exaggerated facial expressions at us, desperate for us to engage and comment. Her attention-seeking theatrics made me feel so uncomfortable and annoyed, I was on the verge of either running out without my milkshake or saying to her, "Can you please act like a professional adult woman with class and step in the other room to have your phone conversation?" I didn't have time for this however because the guy making my milkshake, who was silent and looked like he was embarrassed about her behavior, was done. I paid and left just as she hung up and began complaining about the person on the phone to whoever would listen. I have zero tolerance for obnoxiousness, especially in the workplace and especially by women enforcing stereotypes that women can't be strong business leaders. Whoever owns Kip's instinctively knows that dogs and children have something in common: a love for ice cream. Before you walk in, puppies and full grown dogs can be seen cavorting with kids of all ages, all of them celebrating the frozen, the scrumptious, the hand-dipped. Upon making it inside, you'll find picture of dogs and movie posters from dog-related films on the walls. Then you get that chill that hits your nose right before you detect the scent of freshly made waffle cones; a sign that you're dealing with serious creamerists. Another sign that you've found yourself in a parlor built by people that worship sweet dairy products congealed by cold: a sign that states outright that the ice cream is made on the premises. Fresh hand-dipped ice cream doesn't hold up well, but the perservatives it lacks are to blame for its quality. Homemade hand-dipped is roughly the same consistency as soft serve. It isn't a hard ice cream designed to withstand freezer burn. This is an ice cream that is very much in the moment. You enjoy it while it lasts, you must eat it fast. I could tell that my double pretzel cone (I always wanted to try one) of Penndot Road (a humorous local twist on Rocky Road) and Phantom Fudge (chocolate on chocolate on chocolate) as I witnessed the ease at which each glob was scooped. There was no straining, no resistance. The scoop acted as the proverbial hot knife, the ice cream acting as the butter. The staff knows that good ice cream melts quickly, giving patrons a styrofoam cup as a precaution and a clear plastic holder for the cone itself. While I probably wouldn't order a pretzel cone in the future (it was a little too pre-fab for me) it went on famously with the delicate chocolate ice cream, the salt punctuating the flavors like only that most essential mineral can. As we ate on a bench outside, a brother-sister duo of Labrador Retriever pups pushed around cups of ice cream and then laid on their bellies waiting for strangers to pet them. Kip's was the perfect end to a summer evening and was well worth driving around for, the GPS in the Kaymobile proving indispensible in finding this suburban strip-mall treasure. read more

They close at 9PM, but stay open for a few extra minutes to let the late stragglers (like me) through. GREAT business strategy. The girls working there were easy on the eyes, but more importantly, VERY helpful. Thank you for the conversation and welcoming me to the area! Kip's has great names for all the ice cream flavors (like PENNDOT ROAD for rocky road hahahah) -- mostly dog themed. Some flavors rotate in season. However, so as not to leave the customer guessing, there is a cheat sheet to show what is in each flavor. Everything here (except the no sugar offerings) is made daily on site. Prices were excellent and it's a very inviting store. I had a double scoop of a dark chocolate and fudge ice cream for under $4 that was out of this world. Very creamy and clearly of a fresh flavor.
