Just went for lunch on Friday. I think it was better than the last time I had it! I also got to try their wagyu don; the meat was cooked perfectly and so tender, however, I found the rice to be a bit salty. Their uni is really good here! So don't hesitate to get the uni handroll.

I visited Kira for dinner with a couple of friends during my weekend trip to Houston. 5 stars for quality, delicious food at reasonable prices! We shared the Scallop Crudo ($16), Loup De Mer Sashimi ($9), Bluefin Akami Sashimi ($12), and Bluefin Otoro Sashimi ($20). For myself, I got two Hotate handrolls ($9 each), one Spicy Bluefin Tuna handroll ($8), and an Ikura donburi ($34). Everything was incredibly fresh. The seasoning was delicate and did not overwhelm the flavors of the fish itself, which was greatly appreciated. My favorites for the evening were the Hotate handroll and Ikura donburi, although everything was excellent. The prices were also incredibly reasonable (especially compared to food prices in SF). The service was professional and very warm. They only offer counter seating (no tables), which was fine for a group of 3, but may be challenging for larger groups if everyone wants to mingle. I'm very glad I gave them a try. I will definitely be back when I move to Houston in a few months!

I was super excited to try out this new hand roll spot. The parking garage gives you two free hours, and the restaurant validates for an additional hour, so three hours total, which is more than enough. I ordered the three hand roll set with a maguro hand roll add on. If I had to rank them, it would be: 1. Hotate:The lemon zest pairs incredibly well with the scallop. 2. Salmon: Super creamy thanks to the sauce. 3. Maguro: Also creamy from the avocado. I personally do not prefer avocado in my hand rolls, but it was still good. 4. Negitoro: A little fishy and more plain compared to the others. Overall, the hand rolls were very generous with both rice and fish. I was a bit surprised by the side of pickles since I usually expect ginger and wasabi, but the pickles were a game changer. The hand rolls did not need soy sauce because they were already full of flavor. The service was attentive, and they even offer warm towels at the beginning. Overall, this is definitely a place I will be coming back to regularly.

Second time around was a winner-- we tried Kira twice with the return visit being a better experience! I was bummed with our first visit, as every nigiri piece was over-sauced (in my opinion), so everything just tasted like their soy sauce mix. Glad our friends wanted to go again, because the second visit was way better! I was able to request less sauce / lower sodium for the temakis. We avoided the nigiri because of the first experience, but the temaki were delish~ Crudo-- loved the chunky ginger sauce with the scallops as it wasn't too spicy or strong. The scallops were fresh, sweet, and delicious. The spicy amberjack crudo was more focused on the meaty and silky fish itself, as the sauce didn't stand out too much for me. Yummy~~ Temaki/handrolls-- each bite contrasted a crisp outer layer of seaweed that wasn't too thick with an almost creamy filling. Choose traditional or unique combinations of flavors. My favorites were the salmon lox bagel (tofu cream, sour cream & onion) + the lobster seaweed hollandaise. Such interesting mixes that worked well; they were savory, so creamy with the rice, and totally awesome. :) Nigiri-- Only ordered these on the first visit, so not sure if that was a fluke! The rice was too hard for me, grains were startlingly distinct, and each piece was generously brushed with their sauce... which made it taste like soy sauce for each bite. The fish didn't stand out; every piece tasted similarly like their soy sauce mix, and it too salty for me. Bowls-- The Wagyu bowl came with a beautiful spread of neatly placed beef slices that was full of flavor and definitely rich. There was a bit of funk and umami from the truffle flavor. The meat lover approved. Get the wagyu bowl for almost half price on Wednesdays! :D Matcha kakigori-- they were trying this out on the menu and testing the waters before releasing a matcha strawberry version. :) This was refreshing and not too bitter or too sweet (could be stronger for heavy matcha lovers). I'm wasn't a fan of the jelly pieces tucked inside. There was an interesting and pleasant savoriness from the furikake / seaweed syrup (?) ties it together-- tasty! Kira is great for a tasty meal in a mix of casual/slightly formal setting (dress it up or down!) The team members there seemed like happy, motivated, and really nice people . Will be returning for more temaki and to try more of their bowls :D. Swing by for lunch or dinner-- they also have happy hour and specials each day!

Kira is a special place that is trendy and intimate while also offering some seriously delicious sushi bites. The restaurant is counter seating only with lighting focused on the bar area. We were met with extremely friendly accommodating service right as we entered. The host greeted us as we walked in and offered to take our drink order, as the guests before us were still dining and it was approaching our reservation time. We got to order the Why Go and an off menu Shochu Lemon Sour as we were waiting. We were later offered these drinks on the house since we had to wait a whole 2 minutes past our reservation time. Insane. The Why Go is a plum vinegar and plum wine based drink that provides a salty, sour, and slightly sweet taste that will surely whet your appetite. I am not exaggerating when I say that the off menu Shochu Lemon Sour was one of my favorite cocktails that I have had in Houston. The lemon sour is lightly sweet, not overly sour, and the perfect complement to the slightly sweet and earthy shochu. The drink was so perfectly balanced and light and served as the perfect sip between bites and reminded me of the lemon sours that I have had in Tokyo. I wanted to eat and drink more and more every time I took a drink. Be warned that this is an off menu item that may not be available in the future. We ordered the 8 course tasting menu for 2 at $185 and added two scallop handrolls (hotate temaki). I was equally impressed with the food as I was with the drinks. The bites, while not all strictly traditional edomae flavors, were balanced while each element was distinct. The seafood quality is obvious from the crudo and sashimi courses. Kira's innovation and creativity shines through their handrolls, with offerings like the lox bagel (smoked salmon with cream cheese) and peking duck (quite close to the real thing!). Their attention to detail is unquestionable through the preparation and presentation of their kakigori (shaved ice) desert. Not every bite was my absolute favorite (wagyu donburi is not something I would reach for again) and some bites were truthfully unpleasant (a mouth full of chilis due to uneven ingredient distribution in the spicy tuna temaki). Service, while inviting and endlessly kind, seemed a bit too eager at times (the server took my drink before I was done as soon as I expressed interest in another cocktail). These are small complaints and certainly items that I will over look next time I visit Kira. Courses we received in order: 1. Maguro Crudo (akami, shitake, onion, house soy) 2. Sashimi (loup de mer / branzino, salmon, otoro) 3. Hotate Temaki [add on] 4. Smoked Salmon Temaki 5. Spicy Tuna Temaki 6. Peking Duck Temaki 7. Lobster Temaki 8. Wagyu Donburi 9. Mango Coconut Kakgori

Kira is reminiscent of a moody cocktail bar in Japan from atmosphere to the small details of the plating, the record player, and everywhere in between. Not a single detail was overlooked. It's great for date night or casual night out. The hand rolls are all uniquely curated highlighting the main component. There's no such thing as a bland hand roll here, nor did any of them need soy sauce, and they didn't have same seasoning in every hand roll. My favorites were the lobster with seaweed hollandaise and the maitake mushroom with brown butter. The chefs were knowledgeable and shared the process and labor of their craft which made us appreciate the food even more. We finished with the matcha kakigori made from ice imported from Japan and a side of underground creamery ice cream. It was a perfect treat to end the meal.

Came here for our anniversary and left happily satisfied--full, content, and a little nostalgic. We started the night with two cocktails. The martini initially caught my eye because I love shochu, and when I mentioned that, the bartender offered to make an off-menu lemon sour with shochu. It was incredibly refreshing and exactly what I was craving. He even offered it on the house--and my husband loved it so much he ordered another. We ended up doing the 8 course for 2 for $185 which featured 1 crudo, 3 different sashimis, 4 hand rolls, a rice bowl, and a shaved ice dessert. Every bite was fresh and thoughtfully curated with unique combinations. I was particularly impressed with the tuna crudo, which their paired with shiitake mushroom in a umami sauce. The mushroom flavor melted together with the meaty akami flavor and made for such a complimentary bite. It was a combo I've never had before that worked very well. I was also impressed with the otoro sashimi. The quality was so fresh and instantly melted on my tongue. The hand rolls were all very good and top quality- I enjoyed some new ones like hot lobster and pecking duck. Some of the combos had stronger, western forward flavors but they were all very unique and enjoyable nonetheless. The dessert. This deserves its own paragraph. We had the mango and coconut shaved ice and it was INSANE. It features a toasted coconut cream with perilla notes and fresh mango. I just kept smiling after every bite. I'm so happy with our dinner here. The vibes were good. Will definitely be back!

Lunch chirashi 5/5. Yummy seasoned rice below with delicious wasabi.

What a great lunch spot! It's in the same plaza as Pondicheri. Went on Dec 26 and still saw quite a few patrons. I noticed their glasses first - elevated nonchalant chic. The waitstaff is sweet. My friend and I ordered a crudo, a cucumber appetizer, a chirashi bowl and ikura bowl each, and the coffee kakigori. The hotate and the chopped chutoro was quite a bit too fishy, and the coffee kakigori was far too salty and didn't taste at all of coffee, but I liked the black sesame cream in the latter. The rest were delicious. Portions are on the small end, which helps to really savor the meal. I especially loved: - the sauce for the cucumber dish, - the wasabi mixed with the actual root grated, and - that my chirashi also had some ikura. Would definitely re-visit. Pricey paid parking in front of the restaurant or free 2-hr parking in the garage.

I am finally not pregnant and was craving sushi so we stopped in for a quick bite. Definitely use Resy to make a reservation also kiddos who can't eat sushi are not allowed to dine. The restaurant is very small with maybe 15 seats along a bar area. We watched some YouTube video that recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Service was very prompt- they retold your napkin when you get up so it is a bit nicer of a dining experience. The food tasted very fresh and they were only out of a few ingredients. The stereo system sounded great-that was part of the reason we stopped in. Also the art was really cool and fit the vibe well. The restaurant is very small with maybe 15 seats along a bar area.

I was influenced to book a reservation at Kira, and I wasn't disappointed. We generally hit Hando in the Heights. It's always a sure thing. But I was convinced to venture out to Upper Kirby on a Sunday afternoon. We hit lunch at 1230. I work with the public so on my days off, I'm generally peopled-out. The vibe was perfect with just a few others dining. It was quiet and so chill. They had me at "Japanese Jazz" in the reviews honestly. There were a few options to choose from. We chose the Temaki set (3 for him, 4 for me). It was honestly a good amount of food: miso, crudo, and handrolls. We each had a cocktail. If I remember correctly, it was just a little over $100 with gratuity. Well worth it. Presentation, umami, vibe...oh and parking! Kira is also a Resy restaurant, so if you're an Amex Platinum member, use your rewards!!

If you love hand rolls, you NEED to try this place. I got their 5-piece lunch temaki set with hotate, salmon, maguro, lobster, and maitake, and somehow every roll got better and better. The salmon was my favorite, lobster was a close second, and the maitake mushroom roll was surprisingly incredible. I also added the negitoro and negitoro with caviar and by the end of this meal I was absolutely stuffed. But listen... the real star? Their miso soup. I'm dead serious when I say it's the best miso soup I've ever had. We finished with the mango coconut kakigori shaved ice and it was the perfect ending. It's definitely a splurge, but honestly worth it. Just make a reservation because this place gets PACKED.

I think probably like 15 people can fit in here, I wasn't prepared for how "intimate" this lunch was going to be. To Kira's credit that staff did a great job of making it feel approachable, there isn't some sushi snobbery happening. They worked to sit our group of 4 on the corner so we could all be writhing ear shot and like of sight of the others. It would appear, at least for lunch, than this is mostly a handroll and sashimi affair. The menu was paired down to just a handful of options between those and some crudos and just a few other options. They have handroll prefixes you can choose from too. The selection was limited but good quality from what I could see. Scallops and premium fatty tuna are great choices. Additionally the do handcranked shaved ice that ended up being a really fun treat to cap things off Make sure to make a reservation and the parking in the garage is first 2 hrs free!

We went to Kira with a small group to try it for the first time. Parking was available in the adjacent garage, which is free for up to 2 hours. It's a fairly busy and upscale area getting in and out. The interior is a fairly modern style and seating is done around a central station where the staff prepare your meal. The service is top notch; portions are quite small compared to expected so be prepared to order a few items if you're hungry. We got a couple of their crudo items; the maguro and the hotate. Both were tasty but were super small in portion, even for the full sized dish. We got a variety of their handrolls; highlights were the tuna, duck, and lowlight was their lobster hand roll, which was way too buttery and a bit off putting. The sashimi was good quality fish; we tried the white fish, kanpachi, chutoro, and otoro. All were solid in terms of flavor and presentation. We also got too much dessert in their shaved ice. They were shaved freshly on premise but with the toppings and sauces were quite difficult to eat. The raspberry and coffee were good; the coconut and mango and chocolate banana were a thumbs down from me; the sour sauce on the coconut and mango was not tasty and I just wasn't a fan of the flavor of the chocolate banana. Overall, it's a good hand roll spot with a few options and the seafood seemed like fairly good quality fish and shellfish. It is on the pricey side but not surprising considering the area. The music is also pretty chill and jazzy.

Do they have daily happy hour deals? I thought that I saw 20% off of Temakis on Tuesday but now I can't find that information anywhere.

How much does the omakase cost?

    It varies which set, etc.

I got the pan daiquiri as my drink to start and my friend got the herbed lavender lemonade. For food we shared the hamachi crudo, the chutoro nigri, the kanpachi nigiri, the A5 tartare, the kani handroll, The kinoko yasaimono, and the hot scallop dish to share. The pan daiquiri was SO good. The smokiness from the mezcal hits you first and then the sweet and creamy after taste takes over. It was so well mixed and I would highly recommend trying this if you are a mezcal lover like me. (9/10) The herbed lavender lemonade was too tangy and sweet for my liking. The lavender flavor get lost in the drink. It tasted like a typical lemonade, nothing special. (5/10) The hamachi crudo was so fresh and I really enjoyed the sweet and tangy broth. I'm not sure I would call it tom kha broth but it tasted good regardless and paired well with the tomatoes. (7.5/10) The chutoro nigiri was SO buttery and melt in your mouth delicious. I would definitely get this again. (8.8/10) The kanpachi nigiri was fresh and I enjoyed the sauce paired with it. It was my first time trying amberjack and I liked it. (7/10) The A5 tartare was super unique and well seasoned. There was plenty of tartare compared to the amount of milk bread you are given to eat it with. The uni, caviar, pate and waygu all mixed together was a decadent combination full of flavor. My only note was the contrast in temperatures that I did not love, the tartare came cold while the milk bread was warm. Overall, a very luxurious and tasty dish. (8/10) The kani handroll surpassed my expectations. Typically I don't go for crab first, but I did enjoy the flavors paired with the crab and the hand roll was well filled. (7.8/10) The kinoko roll (king trumpet mushroom roll) really surprised me. I was weary about getting this roll because I normally don't opt for vegan options, but this king mushroom was so well prepared and the sauce was so delicious that dare I say that I enjoyed this more than some of the fish/meat sushi rolls I've had in the past. (8/10) The hot scallop dish was one of the best bites of the night. The scallop was perfectly charred and cooked and the creamy polenta base with the umami salmon roe, with the fried red cabbage to add texture was amazing. I would definitely order this again. (9/10) Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Aiko and the food surpassed my expectations. I loved everything I tried and do want to come back to try more. The service was quick and helpful with the menu. Parking can be a bit tricky, but there are some free street parking spots around the plaza. The ambiance is definitely upscale and classy. It's a great place for a date! My only complaint was that I made a reservation for 2 at least a week in advance and upon arrival, though they had plenty of open tables, we were seated at the opposite end of a table that was already occupied. We were close enough to hear their entire conversation throughout dinner, and I just thought it was an odd experience because that had never happened to me before. Though it did not hinder me from enjoying the food I would have preferred to be seated at our own table.

I thought Aiko delivered a really memorable meal. Overall I'm giving this place 5 stars -- the…read morequality of the fish and the execution were excellent -- though personally I did find the progression of courses a little rich toward the end. For context, Aiko is part of the same group as Doko (their sushi omakase concept) and Handies Douzo (their handroll-focused restaurant), and you can definitely see the overlap in technique and flavor profiles across the restaurants. We went for the Valentine's omakase menu. The meal started with the Oyster Duo. One had a yuzu granita and aguachile that was bright and refreshing, while the other had a roasted onion soubise with smoked trout roe that leaned richer and more savory. Nice contrast between the two. One of my favorite early dishes was the chilled zaru soba. The buckwheat noodles had a great chewy texture and the mentsuyu broth was light and refreshing with mirin, mushroom, and seaweed notes. It was a really nice palate reset. The smoked ocean trout sashimi (masu) was another standout. It had garlic aioli on top with oil and black pepper, and the tomato added a crunchy brightness that balanced the richness of the fish. It's a simple combination but worked surprisingly well. The temaki course was excellent. The snow crab handroll had this creamy mayo texture with chili and crunchy shallots, and you can tell they roast the seaweed sheets right before serving because the nori had an incredible crunch -- honestly some of the best texture I've had in a handroll. It reminded me a lot of the style they do at Handies. For the hirame crudo with pomegranate and shiso, the flavor was good but a bit more subtle. I think the pistachio really helps that dish; without enough of it the flavors felt a little muted. I know pomegranate and pistachio is a common flavor pairing for middle eastern cuisines. My partner has a tree nut allergy so they removed it for both of us. The wagyu fat rice was very indulgent. The first thing you taste is the wagyu fat, but the fried shallots and other crunchy elements help balance it out. The sauce reminded me a lot of something you'd get at Doko -- rich but very satisfying. Adding fried rice in between fish courses was an interesting choice from the chef, but I think Aiko aims to be more western fusion than a traditional Japanese omakase. The tuna trio was fantastic. The chutoro with negidare (garlic, sesame oil, scallion) was probably my favorite bite of the night -- super flavorful and perfectly balanced. The foie gras course leaned sweet and savory, almost like an eel sauce flavor with some crunch on top. Delicious, but by this point in the progression I was definitely feeling the richness of the meal. Dessert was a milk tea tiramisu that I thought was really interesting. The mascarpone layer had a tartness to it -- almost like there might be a little sour cream mixed in -- and one layer had a subtle salty note that balanced the sweetness. Overall, the food quality was excellent and the fish was clearly very fresh. My only minor critique is that the progression of courses skewed a bit rich for my personal preference, especially in the second half of the meal. That said, every dish was thoughtfully executed and there were some truly standout bites. If you enjoy creative omakase with some richer flavor profiles, Aiko is definitely worth trying.

This is nice to have consistent amounts of rice for each dish. I do wonder if this would make service slow or not because it did take awhile to get our food. There were a lot of to go orders and the way they package the items looked top tier. I did see they had a reasonable price for omakase for 2 ($95). This alone I think is worth trying this place out. However, I was not hungry enough for their omakase. I don't know if the machine played a roll in it but the seaweed was a bit soft and got stuck onto the dish. This made the quality of the rolls disappointing. The fish tasted fresh but I think the flavors and ingredients overpowered the fish. I would have liked ingredients that would elevate the fish and make it stand out as the highlight of the rolls. However, I thought they did a good job with presentation in each dish. I tried the rainbow row and that was a bit hard to eat because the seaweed got stuck onto the wooden board. I also thought the menu didn't reflect all of the ingredients that were inside of the rolls. They list the main stuff but not everything else. For example, I noticed that there was asparagus inside of the rainbow row but it isn't listed. For that reason I'd give it 3 stars. I wouldn't order this again. The next item I tried was the yuzu kissed and this was my favorite out of everything I've tried. I do think that it was missing something that would balance out the citrusy flavor but nevertheless it was still tasty as long as you don't douse the fish in the sauce, 5 stars. I also tried the Wagyu pitchfork and I think something that would've made this taste better would be a sauce maybe like an eel sauce. This would also get 3 stars for me. The spicy tuna roll was 3 stars for me and it was more so of the texture of the tuna. The tuna felt like it was stuffed in the roll and was like a soggy texture. Some of the tuna fell out as I was eating it and it also made the seaweed wrap around it a bit moist. I think if you go here you definitely should get the sashimi that way you could actually taste the quality of the fish. I tried the medium tuna and fatty and these were actually what I would expect from a place like this. The quality was there but the other items didn't hit the mark for me. The other item I tried was the Japanese scallop and the scallop was tasty and had that smooth buttery texture. The seaweed again kind of ruined the scallop for me. It felt like the scallop was shoved into the roll and was all soft and squishy when I picked it up.

Also had to highlight their house made soy sauce which was extremely umami, very unique and sets this place slightly apart from the many other sushi joints in its range Truffle crab chawanmushi was certainly a top highlight for me as well - rich truffle oil with the perfectly light steamed egg and sweet crab chunks, just an incredible dish and I could have easily eaten several of these The uni was also extremely fresh and buttery and was nice even for someone who doesn't usually like uni In the same class and range as places like Kata Robata and I would say it's a strong rival! Easy to make resy online. The inside had low lightings, giving an intimate ambience. It wasn't too crowded when we were there on a weekday night. Menu had a variety to your usuals between sashmi, nigiri, maki, or cold tasting items. They also have a chef's feature menu. We ordered a few items to share: - Carbonara udon - Uni pasta - Royal chutoro maki - Wagyu and mushroom tarts - Toyosu sashimi platter - Salmon flight My favorite of the night. I am usually not a huge udon fan but the udon noodles were super soft and melts in your mouth. Probably one of the best udons I have had. We had to try the uni pasta when we saw it on the menu. A good amount of uni and the sauce was perfect with the pasta. For sashmi option, the Toyosu sashimi platter was a great choice that offer a variety of the chef's curated imported fresh Japanese sashimi. We also got the salmon flight which had 6 pieces of the salmon and salmon belly. Service was friendly and quick. Overall, a good spot for sushi in the Montrose area.

The whole dining experience was pleasant. The food even exceeded my expectations. There were so many options and everything I had was delicious. I tried a bunch of items on the menu. One of my favorite things that I tried was the nigiri and the sashimi bluefin flight. They arranged the bluefin tuna in the order of lean to fatty. The fish tasted so fresh and had a smooth texture that was buttery. It just melted in my mouth. My other favorite was the hotate crudo. It had a silky jiggly texture to it. I thought the foie gras with pbj on milk bread was unique. The flavors paired well with the foie gras and had a tender bite to it. The drinks here were also fantastic.

The chill ambience, the delicious food and the laughs were top tier. We had Alex (I think, I'm bad at remembering names but he had Japanese whiskey pins on his apron) as our waiter and he was attentive and so knowledgeable! He gave us great drink recs and was descriptive with the flavor profile for the nigiri choices that we were unfamiliar with. For food, we ordered plenty of appetizers, some of the daily nigiri and our usual go-to's nigiri + some random ones. Apps: toro tartar (amazing flavor profile), goma tofu (good and nutty in flavor), tomato somen salad (refreshing and nice) Daily: squid (a fave for me), purple uni (we both love this), Sakura sake (yes), rockfish (bf got this and really liked it), a tiger prawn app (it was ok) Nigiri from regular menu: totoro, chutoro, scallop, hamachi, barracuda, shiitake mushroom, clam, and mackerel. Roll: the southern smoke roll (so good). We should've tried more rolls. Dessert: my bf noted a dairy intolerance so the chef made us a light and sweet non-dairy dessert out of coconut milk and fruits to celebrate! It was very thoughtful of them. Also got the apple caramel bread pudding (the only cooked fruit dessert I eat b/c I'm a cooked fruit hater) I didn't get pictures of everything since I got distracted w/ eating, but it was a memorable night! I highly recommend coming here for a high quality dinner with friends or a date. Katami is easily a favorite on my sushi restaurant list!

It works just as well for a quick but really good meal as it does for stopping in to grab a hand roll or two between errands or before heading somewhere else. Consistently high quality without feeling overly serious or complicated. The chutoro just melts in your mouth, and each handroll is thoughtfully balanced with great flavor combinations. It's always a reliable place to go to and can serve as a quick bite when I'm indecisive on where to eat. That being said, it gets pretty busy during dinner time, so I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time.

Each bite is elevated and delicious. We wanted to eat slow and enjoy each bite, but each was better than the last and so hard to eat slow! We were anticipating each piece! We loved the addition of laksa and his Malaysian influence. It was so hard to pick a favorite. The sake FLOWS! It's truly unlimited. We had so much fun. The interior is vibe in itself. If you go for the 8 o'clock seating, they do karaoke after and I can only imagine how fun that it since Chef Sky is so fun. He shared so much knowledge and was just so much fun to talk to as well. We finished our meal and stayed another 40 minutes talk to Chef and enjoying the sake. It really is more than just sushi. You will not find wasabi and soy sauce anywhere. Each of the sauces elevates each bite you take and compliments it so well. Here's what we enjoyed: 1.Madai (jalapeño dressing ) 2.Hickory smoke sichimi salmon ( crunchy garlic and sweet & sour sauce ) 3.Scallop with sesame oil , truffle salt , fried garlic , ponzu and mint leaf ) 4.Malaysian curry laksa 5.Tuna (Spain ) mango salsa make with tom yum sauce 6.Kanpachi (Hawaii ) truffle oil , Himalayan salt & lemon zest 7.King salmon (New Zealand ) seared with yuzu miso and Malaysian crunchy fried anchovy 8. Sake flows freely here and is generously refilled and included with the meal price. We had an amazing time just chatting with Chef Sky and the only other couple that was dining during our reservation (only 4 total during our seating). The service from the one man team is seamless and Chef Sky made us all feel welcome and served as a catalyst for conversation and time just disappeared until diners from the next seating started flowing in. We had a wonderful time getting to know him and getting to talk all things food with him, from the struggles of opening a restaurant to where he enjoys eating on his days off. While Tins offers a very nice and high end meal, Chef Sky creates an environment where guests can relax and hang out for the duration of their reservation, so do not expect white linen, posh fine dining here. The list of courses we received in order were: 1. Japanese Sea Bream (Madai) with Jalapeno Sauce 2. Hickory Smoked Sichimi Salmon 3. Scallop (Hotate) with Truffle Sauce 4. Laksa (Curry noodle soup) 5. Lean Bluefin Tuna (Akami) with Mango Salsa 6. Amberjack (Kanpachi) with Truffle Oil 7. Seared New Zealand King Salmon 8. Santa Barbara Uni and Ikura Shooter 9. Korean Flounder (Hirame) with Pepper Sauce 10. Seared Escolar with Pork Floss 11. Fatty Bluefin Tuna (Toro) with Creamy Cilantro Sauce and Kizami Wasabi 12. Yellowtail (Hamachi) with Garlic Soy Sauce 13. Broiled Eel (Unagi) with Lao Gan Ma 14. Matcha Red Bean Cake Tins playfully stands for "This is not sushi" and Chef Sky explains that his omakase course is not traditional sushi and is not served with wasabi and ginger. I enjoyed every course with courses 2, 5, 6, and 10 being particular highlights. That being said, I am unsure if I would return for the food alone as I found some of the toppings to overpower the fish and rice and I am more of a fan of traditional edomae style sushi. The fish that Chef Sky sources in undoubtably high quality. The tuna, amberjack, and yellowtail were some of the best I have had in Houston. The rice is well cooked and well seasoned too. To my own taste, it is a bit of a shame that high quality and masterfully prepared ingredients are masked by creamy cilantro sauce or mango salsa. Chef Sky is an honest guy, creative mind, excellent conversationalist, and great story teller. Taking part in his omakase course, diners get a glimpse into his story. We sampled dishes inspired by where he grew up, where he learned to cook, where he opened his first restaurant, and where he is now. We had a great time and may return to hang out with Chef Sky in the future and look forward to where his creativity takes his "not sushi" omakase course.

My favorite was definitely the Kobe Beef Skewers - I could have just eaten those all night long! Deliciousness in every bite. I arrived about 20 minutes before opening and had to wait outside in Houston's summer heat 93'F. While there are a few benches, there is very little shade, and guests are not allowed to wait inside. When the restaurant opened, there was no clear system for seating guests. Even though I was first in line, several people rushed in ahead of me, making the process feel disorganized. The biggest issue involved a $300 gift card that my friend had received years ago. She simply asked the staff to check the balance. When the server returned, he told us the manager had cut the card in half and that the entire balance had to be used during that visit. What bothered me was the lack of communication. We were never informed of the policy before the card was invalidated. If that is the restaurant's policy, it should be explained clearly beforehand. As two ladies having lunch, spending $300 was difficult, so we ended up ordering far more food than we normally would. The sashimi was fresh but cut thinly than what I've had at comparable restaurants. The hamachi kama, chirashi, and lobster mac and cheese were good. The green tea soufflé cheesecake was the biggest disappointment. For $10, it consisted of three very small cubes and felt overpriced. The waitstaff were attentive, friendly and professional, which helped salvage the experience. However, between the uncomfortable wait outside, the chaotic seating process, and the poor handling of the gift card, this visit did not live up to my previous experiences. While I have many good memories of Kata Robata, I'm not sure I'll be returning anytime soon.
