Back for lunch here at KISS Cafe on Sunday! KISS is always hopping with plenty of patrons and great Vibes!! Hostess greeted us immediately and was told there would be a 15-20 minute wait to be seated. I guess we got lucky and our party of 3 were seated in under 10 minutes. We were met by our waitress and she promptly took our drink orders, 1 freshly squeezed OJ and 2 1/2 Sweet and 1/2 Unsweetened Teas, refreshing!! We ordered: fried chicken and waffles, Small Hail Caesar and Hot KISS Sandwich, French KISS and Biscuit and Gravy AKA SOS! Everyone was extremely impressed with their meals. Our breakfast was excellent but the manager on duty was extremely rude when we checked in for our table holding our well behaved, small dog in my arms. Instead of greeting us, welcoming us and then directing us to the outdoor sitting area for pets, she dismissively greeted us with: "Your dog can't come in here and you need to sit outside." This is a problem because there's no place to check-in at the pet friendly patio, requiring us to check in at their only host stand. It wasn't just the words, but the tone and negative attitude. Instead, she made a negative of Kiss Cafe's open sitting outside for pets. An alternative greeting she may try with customers is the following: "Welcome to Kiss Cafe. We have a special area for your furry pet outside. Please join me as I lead you to sitting area for you and your pet." I was dining at a restaurant in Charleston and mentioned I had a very unpleasant experience twice with my pet at an unnamed restaurant. Without any further prompting, she asked me if it was Kiss Cafe. She said she had worked at Kiss Cafe and the staff is known for having a hostile attitude to pets by its patrons. Looking for something lighter, I opted for the avocado toast which was very fresh and enjoyable. It costs extra to add a fried egg, but definitely worth it as they are local and fresh eggs. A Charleston local recommended KISS Cafe to us, and a quick search on Yelp confirmed this was going to be a solid spot to grab brunch on Johns Island. Our group of four stopped in on a Tuesday around 11, and we were able to grab a table right away! The interior is adorable - complete with fun, island-themed murals and decor. Our server was animated, and quickly sold us on their seasonal apple cinnamon bun. This was indeed delicious, with a melt-in-your-mouth apple pie filling beneath the bun, although I wish it would have been served warm! I ordered the B.E.L.T. for brunch, which was loaded up with bacon and eggs, and served on crispy toast. It's a pretty big sandwich, and well worth the price. I ordered the steak sandwich special on recommendations of our server. It wasn't bad, but surely not worth the almost $30.00 I was surprisingly charged for it. Most sandwiches were averaging about $17, so I did not bother to ask the price. Needless to say, I was shocked when I received a bill for $29 plus change. I drank water with no ice as my drink. I know it was my fault, but I feel the server pulled a fast one on me. I'm sure it was no different than any other sandwiches on their menu. But, to charge over $10 more? Ridiculous. Plus, I ordered fries with no salt & received soggy, salty room temperature fries. Had to ask for a do over on them. Our server came to our table so many times, it was almost to the point of being pesty, like she couldn't wait for us to leave. I tipped an undeserving 19%. The three of us had a late brunch/lunch. My Mother-in-law had Bill's waffle with added fried shrimp. A small bite of each was certainly tasty. The waffle was thick, but soft. The shrimp were expertly fried and well but lightly seasoned. The missus had the egg salad toast, with a small arugula salad with in-house made vinaigrette dressing. The egg salad was fresh, with not too much mayonnaise which some restaurants unfortunately load up. Now, to my meal, the Triple up, with lots of choices. Two eggs, cooked as per my choice, which was my standard: fried hard. Bacon or sausage, so I went with the bacon which was a flattened Patty seemingly made in the house as the spices were good but on the first bite they were a bit overbearing but then as you cheated it became more amazing wonderful combination. With the choice of Pancakes or french toast I went with the ladder. The toast was Softly and that's not harshly done and lightly sprinkled with some powdered sugar. The maple syrup served on the side was the right amount to add the taste to the French toast but not have it swimming in syrup. Absolutely all was delicious. The Kiss Cafe, in the middle of the day, was pretty well crowded and thus our service was a bit delayed after her efficient waitress brought us our water which was our requested beverage, as she also was training a newer waitress. Yes, lots for her to do in the crowded, but pleasant Cafe. Thankfully, they had inside seating as it was a quite warm day to sit at one of the outside tables, even under their umbrellas. There is the Cafe side, which about a year ago added the bagel side (where they seated us three). Thus, there is obvious success in the food, the business, the atmosphere, and the location just off Maybank Highway on Johns Island. read more

Kiss Cafe has started a Chill and Grill Pop Up every other Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. It is incredible, definitely give it a try. It is counter service only, but they bring the food to your table. I had the hot honey & pimento cheese fried chicken sandwich, and it was beyond fantastic. We ordered the Korean corn dogs, which were very tasty. We split loaded fries, which were delicious. My son recommended this cafe, and I found out why. Great food, very friendly service, and a great little patio that was perfection on a nice day. I had the Spicy Italiano sandwich for lunch. Salami, capicola, ham, provolone, tomato, arugula...all great but the kicker was the cherry pepper relish! Served and a terrific baguette, and with a side of possibly the best potato salad I've had. I ordered the daily special (no price advertised), it ended up being 2x the average price of the items on the regular menu. Yes, I could have asked, but when everything on the menu is $10-$16, you definitely don't expect the daily special to be $30. They also do not list any of the alcoholic drinks on their website or their print menu. So $10 mimosas of 50/50 Prosecco/Store bought juice is not worth it, if you're thinking of coming for brunch. $20 for 7.5 oz of prosecco in a crowded diner setting is crazy, especially paired with a $30 breakfast entree. There were upsells that we didn't know were happening until they showed up on the bill. We don't like to have to constantly ask what things cost, or if it is extra, so that's on us for thinking that this was a more straightforward place, what with the religious Christian posts and quotes on the wall. I cannot really recommend unless you're comfortable being tacky and constantly asking for prices, it's a bad position to put the customer in. read more

The best breakfast and brunch place in John's island! Kiss Cafe has a large array of breakfast foods, all of which are delicious! I particularly love their cinnamon waffles with orange maple syrup and fresh berries (which sounds a little weird but is really good) and the hot and crispy fried chicken dishes. Service is excellent, our server was wonderful. She even explained the iced coffee recipe because I liked it so much! The environment is alright, it has indoor and outdoor seating options, but is a bit small inside, so make sure you plan your arrival accordingly before seating runs out. What a great morning. I went in with the thought of getting a bagel to go and ended up staying for a grit bowl and iced coffee. I saddled up to the bar and had a great experience. I was in a hurry but they assured me it would not take long and sure enough within 5 to 10 minutes I was served and out 10 minutes later. Everyone was nice. The person at the bar, the manager, and anyone that was close by was very cordial. I felt very welcomed. And the grits with gruyere, sausage, and mushrooms were delightful. The iced coffee was not watered down and had a good robust taste. In and out in 20 minutes and very satisfied. I will be back. read more

The corned beef hash was SO good! I will have a hard time ordering anything else because I'd be afraid to miss out on it again. The menu said the corned beef was house made and it was amazing. Sitting outside was nice and much quieter. There were a lot of people there, but we were seated faster and got our food in an average amount of time. Would definitely go back. Opinion: As a Charleston resident for 3 years and a native to the low country for my first 17 (now 26), Kiss Cafe is one of the best restaurants I've been to. Service and setting while both admirable, their quality of care and consistency with their food is second to none. Fact: I had a dream about French toast the night before and arrived the next day at KISS hoping to fulfill that. To my delight a Tres Leches brioche french toast was on the specials menu. I ordered that with a side of bacon. The french toast's exterior was firm with a nice crisp, while the sweet cream tres leches gave the inside an almost stuffed effect. This is a change up from my favorite dish, their Kiss My Shrimp n' Grits, my vote for best in Charleston and one I can't recommend enough. The service has the stamp of southern hospitality only stymied by the fact that when a place is a bustling as this the waiters can and will have many mouths to feed. Be patient with them and they wont disappoint. The cafe itself is a smaller for its popularity but does have a nice outdoor seating area so if that's more to your liking definitely hop on that. This is one gem from the east coast I sadly can't bring with me to Orange County, CA. read more

My family goes here at least 4 times per month for over the last year and we have NEVER had a bad meal, left hungry or had a bad experience with a server! Kiss cafe is sooooo good! Went here on a Sunday morning during the brunch rush for a table for 2. We were told about a 25-35 minute wait but they take your number and call you. The area is walkable (we grabbed a coffee at Island Provisions) and the wait was way less than the estimated time! We started with a couple of cocktails which were delicious, (I recommend the raspberry gin fizz). They serve breakfast all day and lunch beginning at 11 and we both were feeling more like lunch and ordered the Bahn Mi which was arguably the best Bahn Mi I've had outside of NYC. I had the house made salt and vinegar chips as my side, but there is a variety of options to choose for your side! Our server could also tell that we were deep into conversations and she did such a great job of popping in and out to take our orders without trying to rush us! Love this little spot. Great atmosphere and food was spot on. Their bagels, these are the real deal and in my opinion just as good as the ones you get from NYC. Went back a second time when it was a little less crowded. This is a full service restaurant that serves both breakfast and lunch. They deliver simple versions of breakfast and lunch with their own little twist. Everything on the menu is absolutely delicious! On this visit, we had the authentic New York style bagels with egg, bacon, and cheese.... absolutely to die for. Don't let the crowd scare you away, the food will make you forget all about the time you had to wait. The service was friendly and fairly quick considering the crowd. Great experience here on Saturday! Definitely recommend arriving earlier as by the time we left around 10:45 there was alot of groups waiting. The inside was comfortable and clean. Even with full tables and bar, it never got too loud. Parking is pretty easy but not right in front due to the set up of the center. Our waitress was kind and efficient, not the most attentive but we never felt like we didn't have what we needed. Coffee was great! The New Yorker sandwich and grit bowl were both well executed.
