Kitchen 1883 is the Kroger grocery chain's first attempt at creating a sit-down restaurant. They will have to work this one a bit. Don't waste your money, you will be disappointed. We had lunch there with a family of 4, including 2 younger children. Initially, we were only the second party in the restaurant, so it was mostly empty. Only after we specifically asked for it were they willing to share the kid's menu with us. Overall, service was friendly, but hardly attentive. While we were eating one of the female employees was loudly berating one of her male colleagues, giving us an unwanted live view to a spectacle that we could have done without ("Mommy, why is this woman so mad?" - "Eat your food, sweetheart"). We tried a wrap, a burger, mac cheese and grilled cheese (the last two from the kids menu). The $10 wrap was ok, but nothing special. The $12 "1883 Burger" was pretty good, but hardly spectacular. I added bacon to it - $2 for two slices of bacon. $1 per slice, really? Overall, the food is seriously lacking in value. We paid over $50 for a family of four and could easily have gotten better food for $30 in a nicer setting (Kitchen 1883 is located in a strip mall, attached to the new Kroger Marketplace in Union). This was our first time here. We really didn't have any expectations, as we knew absolutely nothing about the restaurant other than what we found on Yelp. I can honestly say that it was AMAZING!! I went with the pan seared pork loin, and my husband got the cod sandwich (based on the Yelp recommendations). The food was so delicious, and prepared just perfectly. We initially thought there was no way that the taste could surpass the beautiful presentation, and it really did. Everything we had was just perfect, and we can't wait to come back!! Great downtown/gourmet experience without the traffic and parking (since it is connected to Kroger). Interesting, original cocktails were delicious. Service was a little slow out of the gate because our waitress had too many tables, so be sure to order an appetizer early on. It was worth the wait. It was our first time here tonight. We had the Wednesday steak special and it was fantastic! The mashed potatoes and carrots were just as good! So, I don't live in Florance, but as my friend and I were headed back home we needed some food. We looked on yelp for good looking tasties and I liked the name of this place. Mostly it was the chicken and waffles that caught my eye! It is a peculiar place, attached to a Kroger but PLEASE don't let that deter you! It is so nice inside, my waiter Stephanie constantly filled out water glasses for us each time she came around. So, onto the food! Appetizers were roasted cauliflower and sprouts and the crabcakes, which me and my friend shared. The crabcakes remoulade was delicious and paired well with the crispy outside yet moist inside cakes. But seriously, that cauliflower dish...I could sing to the heavens about it. I wish I had a photo but I don't...the same reason I wish I now lived in Florance just to be closer to this restaurant LOL Dinner was chicken and waffles. The chicken was fantastic, crisp and flavorful. The waffles are wheat so you feel less guilty but it doesn't make a difference, you can't tell. What I could tell was the syrup. It is CAYENNE SYRUP! This place caught my eye as I was leaving Kroger the other day--a restaurant nestled within a supermarket. Double-take worthy indeed. I was in the mood for some comfort food after freezing & falling for 2 hours while my daughter was doing spins and jumps at the iceskating rink. We drove by the Kroger, we decided we would give it a try. I figured I'd be feasting on standard fare take-out fried chicken in sit-down setting. Wrong! The menu was upscale: daughter had braised beef short ribs with horseradish mashed potatoes and seared carrots. She loved it! Quite a compliment coming from the pickiest teenager that has ever walked God's green earth (Doesn't like pizza.) Inconceivable. Beef was fall-apart tender, moist, and delicious. Mashed potatoes had a unique yet flavorful taste profile. The carrots. One word. Yum. ...But the menu was also accessible: chicken and waffles for me. Two words: Yum. Yum. The belgian waffles were delicious. And the ambitious cayenne maple syrup nailed it. The fried chicken breasts were battered in a crisp, herb-savory breading. Two syrup-sticky thumbs up! Blew my expectations away! We loved it. I think I'll deliberately forget to pick up the milk so I have an excuse to sneak off for a bite. read more

This is a brand new concept for Kroger. We went there on the first day they served breakfast / brunch and were the very first to order brunch. The restaurant is very well decorated and furnished, and there is a real attention to detail. Even the crockery is coordinated well to help with the ambiance. The servers are friendly and abundant. We ordered the Eggs Benedict and the traditional breakfast with a side of Goetta. I wanted green tea, but thats not on the menu (surprisingly). The food took a little time to arrive, but the servers kept us awash with coffee (great tasting coffee). When the food did arrive, it was very well presented, however my side of Goetta was missed. The eggs Benedict was cold, but my breakfast was hot. The taste of the food was outstanding, it was well seasoned and the flavors were well balanced. When my Goetta finally arrived, it is the best I have ever tasted. Do not be deterred by these teething problems. The Point of Sale system was the issue with the Goetta getting missed. The manager and server were very apologetic and I was not charged for the Goetta. I have no doubt that the wrinkles will be ironed out. To start out, I cut to the chase: this place was fantastic -- the food and the service. Now the backstory and dish recommendations. We found this independent restaurant on yelp when in the Florence area for a weekend birthday/visit the Ark getaway, coming from Columbus, Ohio (a foodie mecca -- yes, I said Columbus). The Kitchen 1883 website highlighted Sean, the executive chef who grew up in central Ohio. That sealed our dining decision so we called and made a reservation the eve before (not required but they do seem to get busy for very good reason, although they do have a very nice long bar to wait at). Upon our Friday evening arrival we were seated at a booth and greeted by our awesome waitress Stephanie C. She advised us that (an unknown to us) happy hour was ending in 5 minutes (at 6p) and advised of a few solid draft beers. While we are not IPA fans, both beers we had, at Stephanie's suggestion, were not hoppy at all. Stephanie then advised of the special appetizer added for that evening: fried pickles with a sauce. She gave them a big thumbs up, so order in! These were the best fried pickles and sauce we have had. Too many places go too heavy on the salt. These were perfectly fried and paired wonderfully with the sauce. Apparently, the cauliflower and brussel sprouts is widely popular, but I just couldn't go there, even with Stephanie advising that she really doesn't like either veggie but loves these. On to dinner selections: so many good choices described...with patience...by Stephanie (most popular, etc) yet we stuck to our guns. I had the shrimp and grits. My wife had the creole mac and cheese. The shrimp and grits: at this place, it is normally made with black tiger shrimp, andouille sausage, peppers and onions, creole cream sauce and KY cheddar grits. As I do not eat pork, Stephanie advised that it was no problem to eliminate the andouille sausage from it. Every restaurant I have inquired about such prior, in all our travels, couldn't do it. I assume this is because they make the sauce prior. At Kitchen 1883, that leads me to believe it is whipped up upon order. Nice. The shrimps and grits: cheesy, tasty goodness in a very nice portion size, being served in a larger soup-style bowl. Chef Sean's Charleston experience shines through masterfully. My wife's creole mac n' cheese was equally as tasty. It is made up of cheddar, American, smoked gouda, blackened shrimp, andouille, peppers & onions, spicy bread crumbs....and of course pasta. They use Cavatappi pasta - a longer "mac n cheese" type pasta, which I had not seen used before but definitely is a tastier way to go. Again, well-sized and excellent. While neither dish comes with a side, bread or the like, it is not needed and for a guy who loves bread, that says a lot. Finally, dessert: pumpkin & sweet potato bread pudding, warmed up and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Holy shnikies! The tasty, goodness train just keeps on chugging! When we travel, we often leave highly-reviewed restaurants saying "it was good, but we can get just as good or better in Columbus" (shush mocking reader: just ask the foodies!!!). This was a place, as I told our waitress, that would kill it in Columbus. For those concerned when you pull up and say "we're in a Kroger Marketplace, are we in the right place?" You are! Between that and the Kroger liquor store sits Kitchen 1883, in what was supposed to be a Fred Meyer Jeweler. While the jewelry may not have made it, a jewel was definitely left behind. Kudos to Chef Sean, his staff, Stephanie and all the others I observed delivering great food and great service in a clean, COVID-safety observed location. We can't wait to get back or head over to their Anderson location (closer to Cincy). The locals we spoke to may want to keep this their secret, but you all can share. ;^) read more

The only thing I ever hear when I recommend this restaurant is my friends being shocked that I'm recommending a restaurant in Kroger. Kitchen 1883 is so much more than that and shouldn't be classified as such. I've been twice and while I may need to expand my choices, I don't know why I would when I'm so obsessed with their chicken and waffles. I've had their chicken and waffles both times I've visited and haven't been let down. It was just as delicious the second time as it was the first. Fantastic! Fresh vibrant dishes with many that can be made vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. Great cocktail menu, and decent bourbon selection. Don't skip the Cauli Sprouts Appetizer, just amazing! I love the blackberry Bourbon drink they have there. I never had a drink with egg whites on top but BOY was it delicious! I didn't care for the meal I picked.
